SATURDAY, April 27, 2013 “THE WESTERN”

At the going down of the sun...

I crouched in a shallow trench on that hell of exposed beaches... steeply rising foothills bare of cover... a landscape pockmarked with war’s inevitable litter... piles of stores...

equipment... ammunition... and the weird contortions of death sculptured in Australian flesh... I saw the going down of the sun on that first ANZAC Day... the chaotic

maelstrom of Australia’s blooding.

I fought in the frozen mud of the Somme... in a blazing destroyer exploding on the North Sea... I fought on the perimeter at Tobruk... crashed in the flaming wreckage of a fighter

in New Guinea... lived with the damned in the place cursed with the name Changi.

I was your mate... the kid across the street... the med. student at graduation... the mechanic in the corner garage... the baker who brought you bread... the gardener who cut

your lawn... the clerk who sent your phone bill.

I was an Army private... a Naval commander... an Air Force bombardier. no man knows me... no name marks my tomb, for I am every Australian serviceman... I am the

Unknown Soldier.

I died for a cause I held just in the service of my land... that you and yours may say in freedom... I am proud to be an Australian.

SATURDAY, April 27, 2013 “THE WESTERN”

This Saturday April 27, The Millicent Football Netball Club will recognise the achievements of one of its most decorated netballers when Kylie Grosser (nee Walker) plays her 350th game for the Saints at McLaughlin Park when they take on West Gambier.

Grosser, commenced playing with the Saints in 1991 as a young member of the Under 15 side. Her career started with a Premiership and Best on Court in the Grand Final. After moving into the senior ranks in 1994, playing B Grade and A Reserve it was in 1997 she commenced her very successful career in the A Grade side.

Grosser has played most of her career in defence and is known as a tenacious player who is able to read the play and intercept the ball at crucial points of a game. She is also one of the most versatile players in the club playing in goals and mid court and is one of the only senior players that has played in every position on the A Grade court. Grosser has also shown tremendous service off the court being on the Netball, Ladies, Sponsorship and Social Committees.

After playing in four A Grade Premierships in 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007, in 2008 she stepped down to play in the A Reserve side, however was called upon to help the A Grade when injuries hit the side. Last year, Grosser helped the A Grade side throughout the year always playing a pivotal role in whatever position she played. In the Second Semi final she was on the sidelines when Playing Coach, Audine Bryant went down with a season ending Achilles injury and Grosser stepped into the WA position. Her steady head under pressure ensured her side went onto win that game by 1 goal and enter the Grand final. Grosser continued to play a major part in the Premiership win last season when the Saints defeated favourites, Portland. Leading the way in the Saints attack, Grosser dominated the feeding of the ball into the circle and again claimed another A Grade Premiership.

Grosser’s individual achievements are very impressive showing why she is one of the most respected players in the WBNA. Her awards include; C Grade Coaches Trophy in 1993, B grade Best & Fairest in 1994, A Reserve Best & Fairest 1996, A Grade Most Improved Player in 1997 & A Grade Coaches Trophy in 1998 & 2005, A Grade Runner Up B & F 2001 and 2003, WB representative in 2003, Player Life Membership in 2004 and 2012 A Reserve Runner-up.

Grosser today will play in the A Reserve side at 12.45pm and hit the court with some of her best friends as they battle together to try and win in her 350th. She will be well supported by her family and friends, including her children, Jaden & Tahnee and her husband Bronte, who is also a Player Life Member.

The MFNC would like to congratulate and wish Kylie all the best as she reaches this wonderful milestone.

She is a true club champion who has shown wonderful commitment and dedication over her 22 years at the club.

There is a lot of excitement around the North Netball Club as we finally reach our first game. The pre-season has been very lengthy for the senior squads capably led by Michelle and Amanda and I hear the girls can’t wait to get on the court for a ‘real’ game. We warmly welcome all our new players and their families to the Club. We also have 9 very excited Under 12b girls joining the Club with most of them playing their first game for the Tigers. A big thank you to all our coaches for dedicating your time to your teams and we wish a great season to Michelle, Amanda, Jordana, Hannah, Anne, Mandy, Tanya, Kerry, Brooke & Audine. Of course our game wouldn’t happen if we didn’t have the umpires so stay tuned for some info from Di Jones on future umpiring clinics. Don’t be shy, put your hand up and have a go. Our Club couldn’t be a success if it wasn’t for our fantastic volunteers. You will have noticed all the work happening around the netball courts over the last month. A huge thank you to our amazing football Management Committee who has moved mountains to ensure we get 3 netball courts up and running for the first game. This will be huge for us and gives us an extra training/warm up court. Please show some patience while final works are to be completed in the next 2 weeks. All the best to all teams today. Enjoy!

The 2013 season kicked off with a bang last Saturday with magnificent weather and a healthy crowd witnessing four entertaining games of football. After conceding an early lead to a strong East outfit our U15 boys outscored them after quarter time. I’m sure Closey and the boys will learn a lot from their first hit out. Better players Close, Nankivell, Brown, Wilson-Smith, Brookes & Everard. There were plenty of positives from the U17s, especially a 6 goal performance from Will Lewis and 4 from fast leading Matt Allen. Whany’s boys ended up with an impressive 88 point win. Better players Hatt, Mansell, Anderson, Hunter, Lewis & Stafford. The magoos hit their straps early to play some good free flowing football. Great to see Sam Shepherd snag a nice goal against his old club. Better players Munn, Kuhn, Schutz, Brad Stafford, Stephen McInernery, & Hensel. In the main event Fletty showed the benefit of a solid preseason, slotting through three first term majors. East gave everything in a torrid first quarter but gradually the experience of our players set the scene for a solid 12 goal win. Great to see Jake Galpin play a serviceable first game in the Tiger colours. Better players Nults, Hudson, Brock (the older) Egan, Hosking, Flett & Nick McInerney. Today we welcome our friends from Demonland for one of the best days on the local sporting calendar. We pay tribute to those who served and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our magnificent country. A special thanks to the Mount Gambier RSL and KD for supporting the day. Good luck to all who compete today. Go Tigers

S It was tremendous to see so many back at the Club on Saturday night and as mentioned on the night we will be doing dinners on every game day Saturday night.

On a sad note, all players and support staff wore black armbands last week as a tribute to Kevin Radley who passed away recently. Kevin was a stalwart of the club and will be deeply missed. Our condolences go out to the Radley family and deepest sympathy to Tess, Steve, Smooth & family.

Well, it was a mixed bag on Saturday with two nail biting wins by the B grade and 15 and under, as well as a comprehensive performances from the 13 and under team – one of our finalists from last season. The under 12s also enjoyed a successful start to 2013 with the new 12B competition going off without a hitch and new coaches Alyce Mourbey and Dani McKinnon starting off with a win. The remaining teams opened with a loss but I know the girls in all those teams are keen to improve and work hard to notch up some premiership points sooner rather than later. Our attention now turns to ANZAC Day – a special day on the Australian calendar and it is a privilege for us to continue to commemorate such a significant day in this nation’s history with our now traditional ANZAC Day clash with North Gambier. Once we hit the court, of course, it is all about the performance and striving to win, but we should all make sure we take the time to remember that the day is about so much more than a netball game. The official ANZAC ceremony is at 2pm on the football oval.

Welcome back to a big year in Western Border League Football. South Gambier has gone through quite a few changes over the summer break with the appointment of Luke Duncan as Senior coach, Ryan Donovan as Reserves coach, Craig Torney & Peter Harten and Andrew Denton & Wayne Glynn as coaches for the new Under 17’s and Under 15’s teams. We also have several new names joining the club along side several familiar names returning including Josh Wilson, Ashley Bryant, Nick Jenkin, Jak Ryan, Ricky Hay, Clay Von Duve, Luke Thomson, Taylor Laube, Scott Fleming and Tyson Currie. After a slow start a few weeks ago in the first game of the Elastoplast Cup and a strong showing in the second game, and several trial games, all four sides are keen to have a good showing for our first game of the season. Four teams playing on Saturdays will make for an even bigger day out and we look forward to seeing everyone out at South for our first home game in Round 3. We would like to acknowledge the support of all our sponsors and current members and welcome all our new members to the club, we trust you will enjoy your time with us. 2013 will be a year to remember for the SGFC and the Committee and Coaching Department look forward to the upcoming season. Go Demons!

We had a great day over at Casterton with beautiful weather and some good games of netball played in all grades. We were able to come away with four wins for the day. The highlight was the little Under 12’s, with Paige, Hannah, Madi and Sapphire playing their first game of netball for the Saints. Julie and Madi are doing a great job with the Under 12’s and we look forward to seeing more new faces on the court this week when East come to play our 12 B’s at home and our 12 A’s play West. We thank the East girls for coming to Millicent for the day so these little girls can have a game of netball. It was great to see so many of our players and supporters at the Prince of Wales for presentations last weekend. Thanks to Turtle for supplying our best player awards who went to A – Lisa Duldig, A Reserve – Carol Grimes & Madi Thwaites, B Grade – Peta Haines and C Grade – Kristy Ryan. Today we celebrate one of our most dedicated and decorated players 350th game – Kylie Grosser. Kylie has given tremendous service on and off the court and has enjoyed personal and team success. She has been fortunate to win many Premierships and play with her best friends, sister and cousin. Make sure you are at the courts today at 12.45 when she runs through her banner with Jaden and Tahnee and her family there supporting her! Also get into the club tonight to see a slideshow of her 22 years at the club and buy her a drink or two! Congratulations Kylie we are all very proud of you.

With only 14 rounds to go we are in the top 4 and looking forward to hosting West today. Youngster Mason Redman played his first A grade game and certainly has a bright future if he gets Grandpa Krugers height and good looks. By the way do you think Kruger carries a photo of his grand kids or a photo of one of his prize “Suffolk Stud Rams” in his wallet? My money is on the Ram! Do you reckon Mason’s old man Joel has that “Jason Statham” look about him? Steve Duldig carried a sore groin for most of last season but after wife Lisa having a baby 3 months ago the groin is all good again, funny that! Brad Tilley has had a knee clean out and is good to go as he gets in plenty of training for the “Tour de Furner”. Jeremy Hales who followed the “Charlie Sheen” pre-season will start to reap the rewards especially after Juddy had a blinder. Sales of Deep Heat went through the roof this week after all the ring ins ran around in the Ressy’s, Wezza and Dunco want to know if it comes in a 44 gallon drum! Seen Andrew “Bowl Head” Nitschke Sunday and didn’t know if he was walking or doing some sort of Gangnam Style Bowl Head Shuffle? Lets get behind Coach Andrew “Adda” Robinson and get him a win at home, if you haven’t met him don’t be shy make yourself know tonight in the club. Brad Tilley is the man to see about Memberships so get on board. Fosters Foodland has great food and checkout chicks! Neil Brown

What a beautiful day greeted us for the start of the 2013 season. We had 4 wins and 4 losses for the day, with two of those being cliffhangers! We also celebrated two fantastic milestones last week, with Melissa Ryan playing game 350 in the A Reserve, and Sammi Cummins playing game 250 in the B Grade. Congratulations to these two popular players on a fantastic achievement with our club. While we are congratulating people there have been a few things happening around the club that we should also acknowledge: Lisa, Rachael, Sophie and Dee on their engagements, Kahli, Nicole and Chloe on their marriages and Amy on her upcoming arrival ! Today we head over to Millicent, with what should be some more tough battles. Reminder that there is the Players Auction up at the Club tonight, so please come along for tea and then stay and grab yourself a bargain. Safe Travels and good luck today! Last weeks Scores, Best Players and Sponsors: A: 41-28 Lisa -Chemist King, Rachael -Metro Coffee | AR: 45-27 Stacey -Fasta Pasta, Sophie-Metro Coffee | B: 47-49 Sammi-Fasta Pasta, Chloe-Metro Coffee | C: 51-38 Ashlee-Mr Clean, Kristyn-Metro Coffee | 17: 35-15 Mollie-Subway, Sam-McDonalds | 15: 19-20 Georgia H-Subway, Jahmeka-McDonalds | 13: 18-44 Eliza-McDonalds/VideoEzy, Hannah-McDonalds | 12: 2-20 Katie-McDonalds/VideoEzy, Jasmine-McDonalds

Round one has been played with mixed results for West Gambier. With scores reasonably close at half time it was disappointing that we couldn’t finish off strong and get a win. There is some good signs though and the football department is confident of a better showing today. Best players in the seniors were Steve Wenman, Braddo Wilson, Mark Smith, Roo Mcelroy, Wooka Allen, Nath Lewis. Well done to Lewie as a new face to play well for his new club. Reserves best was Matty Koopman, the big wiz, Rooster, Sam Robbo, and Trav Lockwood. Our ressies got well beaten but showed something and with a bit of structure and training should get stronger.Under 17’s J Coombe, A Gibbs, L Bradley-Brown, M Walmsley-Pace and A Cram. Great win boys, keep it up !! Under 15’s R Hosking, B Wagstaffe, B VonDuve, N Tilley, L Beckman, J Stratman. Welcome to Saturday footy guys!!! Glad to have you. Well done to the lads for organising a fun night on Saturday night. A great idea with the shuffle night. Today we take on the Saints and with a new look league the Saints are bit unknown so hopefully we have a good game and come away with some wins. Congratulations to Melissa Ryan and Sammi Cummins on their milestone games last week in the netball. Get back to the club tonight for our Player auction night, its always good fun. Huntah

What perfect weather mother nature gave us for the first game of netball last week. The new East uniforms looked great out on the court. Our 2 little under 12’s teams gave it their all on Saturday and with many of them playing there very first game of netball ever, they all tried their best and played well as a team. Keep trying hard girls, a win will come. Under 13’s went down to a strong North side; they had some great play down the court, bad luck girl, maybe this week. Under 15’s had an even contest finishing on a draw. Need to look for all options & be patient. Under 17’s had a good win, but with tough competitors they need to be more prepared to put your bodies on the line. C Grade has a close game, but finished on a win. Need to work on our goal percentage this week. B Grade was unlucky going down by 1 goal. With a new team and goalie combination, it was a great effort, but need to work harder this week. A Res had a tough game first up, going down to North. With such a young side, the season will improve with strength and hard work. A grade played a consistent game, but just fell short in the 3rd quarter letting north get away with a win. Let’s all fight hard today against the Cats today…come on Doggies!

We welcome all bulldog supporters back to the kennel at this time our thoughts are with current and past service men and women and their families this Anzac Day. Round 2 we host Casterton FC including a twilight U15 game which will give both club’s juniors an opportunity to show their skills in front of a full crowd. While the gods recognised the first game of the 2013 season by providing perfect football conditions, the seniors started their game well but as the as the afternoon wore on, the players struggled to keep up the pace, which the players will evolve from. Young dogs continuing to show promise from last year Flynn Balshaw, J Eldridge, M Dempsey and J Cairns, Captain Anderson was his reliable self and Rhys Carman debuted in the ruck against one of the hardest rucking duo in the league. Congratulations to Matthew Van Schaik, Blake Lynch, Rhys Carman and U17 player Jack Dawe who debuted last week look forward to you playing together over the coming years. Reserves found it hard early and couldn’t peg back the North outfit, new recruits, Lachlan Staniford and Luke Thompson working hard with returning Kelvin Cook easing himself into the game Matthew White continuing his consistency from last year and familiar family names in B Pannenburg & J Ransom playing well. The U17’s as a young group will continue to develop and showed they will not shy from their onfield responsibilities. Malcolm Lockwood’s U15’s showed plenty of spirit and willingness to attack the ball and the contest. Go Dogs and stay safe

Island Park was picture perfect last week and a great day for the Cats with both netball and football squads starting with enthusiasm , competitive and positive play and the usual fantastic support. We welcomed 15 new faces from 2012 and hope that they enjoyed their first experience at the home of the Cats. Promising beginnings for all grades with B,C 17U securing the four point bonus to open the season a highlight only shadowed by the pure excitement of our kittens 12u in their uniforms. We gratefully acknowledge the Cats netball sponsors : Bloomers, Casterton Pharmacy, Mark Davis Cleaning, Foodworks, Faroes, From Me To You, Glenny’s Takeaway, Glenelg Inn, Hairwize, Herberts Bakery, Judi’s Kountry Kelpie Kafe, Jim Tant, Milly’s, Menzies Hotel Dergholm, Shaun Fidler, Mc Namara Clothing, Spill the Beans, This n That | A: 52-71 Ellen Brewster/ Marni Perry Awards: Gorgia Sealey/ Marni | A Res: 34-46 Emily Milich/ Abbey Shannon Awards: Sharna Fidler / Katherine Jarrad | B: 56-41 Kate Bruce-Smith/ Tori Perry. There has been a buzz around Island Park for the past several weeks after a successful recruitment pre-season.The new look Cats ran out on to the field having watched the Under15’s, Under 17’s and Reserves notch up wins. After a slow start the seniors pegged back the Millicent lead and produced some solid football. Coaches Ayton and Macmichael covered the ground and helped at both ends. Simon Sealey was judged best for the Cats with a fantastic defensive display. The effort of youngster Dale Bunnik in the ruck cannot be underplayed, giving the small men first use of the ball. Currie and Kleemann proved they will be invaluable to the Cats this year as will big man Zac Michau who provided a focal point in the forward line. It was joyous win for the reserves, who have struggled with numbers for several years now. With the speed and skill of Zack Howlett and Tom Logan and the defensive skills of Alister Harley they pulled of a convincing win and sang the club song with pride. The under 17’s had an impressive first game, easily out classing their undermanned opposition. It was a great team effort that showcased the depth of skill in this team. Best M.Duerden, G. Cleary, I.Forbes, F.Kent, D.Cleary, B.Devearux. The under 15’s had a fantastic game with a nail bitting last quarter to see the young Cats come out as victors. Corey Jarrad played a strong game, as did Jackson Gibbs and Brad Millard. Good luck to all teams this week; hopefully we can back up last week’s performances.

SATURDAY, April 27, 2013 “THE WESTERN”

There has been much said about new Western Border Football League. How will a six team competition go, will it still have the appeal and the strength to be the premier competition of our area? The answer is yes. The introduction of night football, adding under15s to play on Saturdays, high profile East Gambier coach Phil Carman, Millicent footballer and AFL Norm Smith Medallist Byron Pickett and the abundance of young talent spread evenly through our clubs can only mean the Western Border has an exciting year ahead.Every game every week is potentially a local “Derby” and grudge match.Rivalry between the Mount Gambier sides is set to go to the next level.Friends off the field, but when the game begins both players and supporters will give everything to have bragging rights for that week. The long drives to Hamilton and Portland are no more which is a great benefit for young netballers and footballers along with their parents who can enjoy their Saturday nights knowing the drive in the middle of winter home is so much shorter.I have no doubt clubs of other leagues will be watching with interest and the enticement to be part of the premier league and I can see an eight team competition in the near future. Now we can look back with fond memories of nearly 50 years of a competition that had great footballers and characters, and cross border clashes between the six Victorian and six South Australian clubs that made men out of boys and others who would run for cover. During the 70s the Western Border was recognised as one of, if not the best country football leagues in either SA or Victoria. Who could forget the clashes between East Gambier and Hamilton Imperials during the mid 70s. They were arguably the best and toughest country football seen. These two sides staged some of the best grand finals played in the amphitheatre of Sylvester Oval, Coleraine. Both sides played as if they were going to war, and for those who played or watched these games they know the old Western Border League will never be forgotten.During the year I will go down memory lane recreating some of the highlights, the characters, the champion footballers and stories which made the Western Border League such a joy to be a part of.A New Era BeginsBut now it is time for these six foundation WBFL clubs West, East, South, North, Millicent, and Casterton to start a new era and create their own history. The first week of matches saw beautiful conditions and big crowds - just what was expected.North showed why they are flag favourites with a good win against the young Bulldogs.East tried hard all day and were only a couple of goals down early in the third quarter but the class and experience of North’s senior players, such as Nulty, O’Grady, and coach McConnell and a very busy Brock Egan showed why the Tigers will be hard to beat this year.Congratulations to East first gamers Matt Van Schaik, Blake Lynch and Jack Dawe, who all acquitted themselves well.South looked the goods against West and seem a serious threat to challenge North for this year’s flag. The blockbuster this Thursday on ANZAC Day, should be a beauty. With Casterton just edging out Millicent, the WBFL would be very happy that all clubs and games will be competitive, unlike some of the scores from neighbouring leagues which must be a bit worrying. In the end it has been a fantastic start for the new WBFL.So as a supporter get along to a game, buy a raffle ticket at the gate, maybe grab a drink and a sausage and support your club in any way possible.Watch the talent of our youth and enjoy the game.!

WHITELION/BLUE LIGHT PARTNERSHIP - FRIDAY MAY 24th 2013 Mt GAMBIER

ABOUT WHITELIONWhitelion is a non-profit community organisation that has been supporting highly vulnerable young people for thirteen years. Our organisation provides youth-focused gender and culturally specific services in several areas. These include employment, role modelling, specialist outreach support and education based prevention programs.Whitelion’s mission is focused on connecting young people aged 10 to 24 with the community, giving them practical and effective supports that enable them to make positive choices in their lives. The young people that Whitelion works with have seldom had positive influences in their lives and are often victims of abuse and neglect. Many come from backgrounds that are characterised by multi-generational disadvantage, unemployment, substance abuse and offending behaviour. These young people require consistent, practical and intensive support to break the cycle of disadvantage and reach their full potential.

ABOUT BLUE LIGHTThe mission statement of Blue Light SA is “to develop and promote life learning and life skill activities for young people in a safe and fun environment, create positive relationships between people of all ages, and to minimize social disorder and crime related behaviour”.The activities of Blue Light are respected & admired in Mount Gambier and the Lime Coast Region, in particular with their acclaimed outdoor adventure and leadership development courses at Noorla Yo-Long, the Blue Light Youth camp at Millicent.

ABOUT BAIL OUTBail Out is Whitelion’s annual major fundraising campaign that aims to raise much needed funds to support young disadvantaged people at risk, whilst at the same time combining a substantial Community educational component.Bail Out provides a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a young disadvantaged person that has been disengaged or disconnected from our community, who may also be struggling from abuse and neglect, drug addiction and poverty.

LANDCAREVICTORIA

What is a catchment?

Geographically a catchment is an area of land that drains to a single low point such as

a gully, creek or river.A large catchment may be made up of a series of smaller sub-catchments and these are

made up of soil, water, air and vegetation. Together theses elements support life and

make up an ecosystem that within it has cycling of nutrients and other elements. Each

component is linked, so when one changes it has an effect on the other elements.

What is Integrated Catchment Management?

Integrated Catchment Management is a coordinated approach to the management of

natural resources. It is the integration of land, water, vegetation and other biological

resources for use in a sustainable, balanced way. ICM draws together all members of

the community to effectively manage the catchment in an integrated and holistic way.

ICM fosters joint action by all sectors of the community in an effort to co-ordinate the

problems and solutions within a catchment.Catchment Strategy – The Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Regional Catchment Strategy will be

built into a catchment management plan. The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative defines ICM as “a process through which people can

develop a vision, agree on shared values and behaviors, make informed decision and

act together to manage the natural resources of their catchment”.

This could be a commitment by the community and agencies of the catchment where

the overall aim could be that while addressing stream flows and stream health, to halt

the increase of salt and silt discharging from Fiery Creek and Salt Creeks and to reduce

overall salinity and silting in Lake Bolac. The adoption of the ICM approach is increasingly regarded as the most effective way

of dealing with environmental issues. ICM takes a ‘whole of systems’ approach and

avoids dealing with issues in isolation. It also recognizes the important role played by the

community in managing natural resources and advantages, such as increased mutual

understanding and effectiveness that results from a genuine partnership between

community and government.

In The PoolThe Swimmers compete

in soaring temperatures

at the House Swimming

Carnival. The skies were bright blue as the colourful

procession of red, blue, yellow and green

made its way noisily to the pool. The

chanting had begun already and the scene

was set for a day of heated competition

in the water. Mr Grigg was looking tense

as students entered the grounds and the

other houses turned their attention to

breaking, finally, Laidlaw’s record of too

many successive victories at the House

Swimming Carnival.

The day began with the diving events.

The standard continues to improve,

and it reflects the efforts Mrs Horne

has put into training the competitors.

This year the Diving cup was won

by Berry. As the ropes returned to

the pool to signal the beginning of

the races, the weather was growing

steadily hotter. Eager groups of

students retreated to the shade of the

‘tents’ and the staff performing duties

as judges and timekeepers looked

increasingly uncomfortable. Nothing,

however, seemed to take away from

the spirit of the day! The Year 12 cheer

squads excelled themselves and it

was not surprising that many had lost

their voices by the time the last event

had been swum.

The scores were close all day and

there were some amazing individual

efforts. Age group championships

were awarded to Anastasia Hamill,

Mitchell Godfrey Smith, Nina

Wootton, Jared Rieger, Robyn Sleigh,

Conrad Hamill, Anna Brown, Tom

Nolan and Jarrod Simons, Anna

Burger, Rodney Evans, Brigid

Godfrey Smith and Drew Dreary. As

the last pennant was presented, the

crowds gathered under the shade of

the trees grew quiet. Would Laidlaw

finally be vanquished? Their girls

performed so well that the blue house

was announced as quite a comfortable

winner of the Girls’ Aggregate. What

could the boys do? Young House

emerged victorious in the Boys’.

Aggregate and the pressure mounted –

but to no avail. Laidlaw once again held

the trophy for the Grand Aggregate

high!

It was again a most enjoyable and

smoothly run day. Miss Waldron

and the Physical Education staff had

worked tirelessly to make it a great

success!

Many successes at the

GSSSA Carnival.Only seven days later, a large team

of our most successful swimmers

returned to the Hamilton Pool to

compete against the region’s schools

in the GSSSA Carnival. Once again

the spirit and enthusiasm of the

squad was evident as the day began

with the diving. Amanda Horne,

Declan Murphy and Anna Burger

each won their events and put us in

strong position early in the day. The

freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke,

butterfly and medley races followed

and more victories were recorded

as Mitchell Godfrey Smith, Samuel

Winter-Cooke, Jandre Slabbert,

Rodney Evans, Megan McIntosh,

Alice Langley, Jack Baring, Jared

Rieger, Brigid Godfrey Smith and

Drew Deary all touched the wall first

in their respective events. Our relay

teams also performed very well.

At the end of the day, our Swimming

Captains, Brigid Godfrey Smith and

Fergus Harpley, proudly accepted the

trophies for the Diving and the Boys’

Aggregate. We came second in the

Grand Aggregate. Collandrian 20071

Forty six swimmers

sompete in the city at

the ICCES Carnival. The ICCES swimming was held at

Nunawading on the 14th of March this year.

A reasonably large team of 46 swimmers

took the long journey to Nunawading to

compete. This was a great opportunity

for all of our swimmers to compete

against much bigger schools and many

state representatives.

As our team quickly found out, the

standard was quite amazing at this

carnival but they certainly held their

heads high. There were a number of very

good results with the highlight being

David Andrivon’s second in the year 9

freestyle C. There were also some very

pleasing third placings for the following

students, Nina Wooton - year 7 freestyle

C, Tess Upstill - year 9 freestyle C, Brigid

Godfrey Smith - year 12 breaststroke,

Georgie Upton - year 8 freestyle D, Will

Collins - year 9 freestyle D and the Year

9 freestyle relay consisting of Conrad

Hamill, Jandre Slabbert, Will Collins and

David Andrivon.

The team arrived home weary but satisfied

with their efforts and appreciative of the

work done by Miss Waldron in training

the competitors and organising the trip.
