Penrith Builds for a Cure

I t’s the feel-good property story of the year: A major fundraising initiative that will see a home in Glenmore

Park built and fully furnished within 21 days, all for a good cause.

The home will be auctioned on October 26 with proceeds to go to the Children’s Cancer Institute to fund vital medical research to fi nd a cure for childhood cancer.

The lavish four bedroom, two bathroom ‘Havana One’ home is being donated by McDonald Jones Homes and built in partnership with Austral Bricks. It will sit on 500m2 of land in Glenmore Park donated by Wearn Brothers Group and will be sold fully furnished by Freedom, with kitchen and laundry appliances by Electrolux and home entertainment by Panasonic.

All real estate services are being donated by PRDnationwide Penrith and the home will be auctioned by ‘The Block’ celebrity auctioneer, Damien Cooley.

Scott Cam, McDonald Jones Homes’ ambassador and Australia’s favourite chippy will lend his support to the project and will be joined by The Block’s 2012 winners Brad and Lara Cranfi eld, and Freedom ambassador Jason Grant.

“When I was asked to join this campaign to raise funds for Children’s Cancer Institute, I was thrilled to help. Those working behind-the-scenes to fi nd a cure for childhood cancer aren’t asking for a miracle, just the funds to make it happen. The Children’s Cancer Institute’s determination is infectious and I encourage all Aussies to get involved in Build for a Cure and give generously,” Mr Cam said.

family home, but the fact that it is coming furnished to such a high calibre is not something the Penrith market has seen before, so we’re getting calls from both owner-occupiers and investors,” Mr Latty said.

“We expect the house to sell upwards of $700,000, but because this house is so unique it will make for a very interesting auction.”

With its labs fi rst opened in 1984, Children’s Cancer Institute not only conducts medical research to fi nd a cure for childhood cancer, but also ways to improve existing treatments.

The Institute acts a hub for specialised DNA testing services to all children’s oncology units in Australia, advising clinicians which treatments would be most eff ective for an individual child.

“As we celebrate 30 years of medical research, we’re more determined than ever to put an end to childhood cancer,” said Prof Michelle Haber AM, Execu-tive Director, Children’s Cancer Institute.

“I am thrilled that Children’s Cancer Institute is the benefi ciary of Build for a Cure, a wonderfully innovative project, and I am blown away by the generosity of

our partners who are making this happen.”

The auction is taking place at 2pm Sunday, October 26.

Strata Community Australia says it has no problem with plans to remove parking from new apartments that are close to public transport

P roposals to remove parking from new apart-ment developments close to transport have

the support of strata industry peak body Strata Community Australia (NSW), which says there are a number of reasons why this is a good idea.

SCA (NSW) President Greg Haywood said the organisation welcomed the new building initiatives and believed that local councils have for too long been the holder of lifestyle choices for new buildings.

Further they are not always in touch with the housing choices that people actually want.

“There are many garages in inner city buildings that simply don’t get used. A higher infl uence on bicycle, scooter and shared car parking would all help to reduce our congested roads and carbon footprint,” Mr Haywood said.

“The increase in shared car services also means that for most people living close to public trans-port they will rarely need a car and when they do the car share option is likely to be available.

“Some Councils are already providing allocated shared park-ing spaces as part of the develop-ment process.”

From a strata manager perspec-tive, not having to deal with the issues that parking can cause between apartment owners can only be a positive thing for community harmony.

“Ask any strata manager what the main issues are they have to resolve in many strata schemes and they will name parking as one of the top three. People parking in visitors spaces and not actually

visiting, people parking in some-one else’s place, people parking illegally on common property are just some of the issues they encounter,” Mr Haywood said.

“One of the main problems arises from commuters illegally parking in visitor parking spaces. Allowing developers to leave parking out of new developments close to public transport would also resolve this small but not insignifi cant problem.”

NSW Fair Trading Minister

Matthew Mason-Cox has issued a stern warning to real estate agents, revealing a blitz of property auctions is underway with a focus on underquoting, dummy bidding and deceptive conduct.

“In August, Operation Kuban was launched in the Northern Beaches to check licenses and gather intelligence on any underquoting activity,” Mr Mason-Cox said.

“Officers attended 74 agencies, sighted the licenses or certifi-cates of more than 450 people and reviewed the sales records of 285 properties. There was no evidence of underquoting but officers issued 21 Penalty infringement notices, totalling $18,150.”

NSW Fair Trading officers have also attended open days, posing as young couples wanting to buy a property.

Fair Trading says it will continue to keep an eye on auctions in particular moving forward.
