T he days where kids move out, only to move back in with their parents after a year or two have

been replaced by a role-reversal of sorts, and according to Club Plus Super, the superannuation system is to blame.

According to the industry super fund, the country will soon see an increasing amount of parents forced to sell their family homes and move in with their children to fund their retirement.

Recent projections by Club Plus Super are suggesting that the super balance of the average 65-year-old Australian retiree will likely be exhausted after only six years of retirement.

“The current superannuation system allows people to use up all of their superannuation in one hit before being forced to rely on the Age Pension,” said Club Plus

“This system and the sheer scale of Australia’s rapidly aging population will potentially see hundreds of thousands of retirees run out of funds and not be able to enjoy the retirement they envis-aged.”

According to Mr Cahill, a natural response to dwindling retirement spending would be to sell the family home to unlock equity.

This could see seniors move into rental properties or back in with their children.

“These trends could signifi -cantly change the dynamics of Australian families, the Austral-ian property market and the Australian economy,” Mr Cahill said.

“As moving back in with children may be the most cost eff ective option for many retirees,

Australia needs to prepare for this likelihood or take immediate steps to reform the superannua-tion system so that it is better able to support Australians wishing to enjoy a lasting and sustainable retirement.”

An Association of Superan-nuation Funds of Australia report backs up Club Plus Super’s claims, suggesting the majority of Australians will eventually need to rely solely on the Age Pension.

Club Plus Super recently surveyed 843 members, discover-ing that while more than half were aware of how much super they would need to meet their lifestyle requirements, only a third would consider making extra contribu-tions.

Home loan customers prepared to shop around stand to gain from the latest push by the major banks to attract business, accord-ing to mortgage broker network 1300HomeLoan.

The Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and National Australia Bank have all slashed their long

term fi xed interest rate home loan packages to rates of less than fi ve per cent.

1300HomeLoan Managing Direc-tor John Kolenda said some fi xed rates were lower than standard variable rates and it was an ideal time for home loan customers to negotiate a better deal.

“Consumers are in a strong bargaining position with offi cial interest rates remaining at a record low of 2.5 per cent and banks able to off er highly competitive deals as their borrowing costs in the global money market have fallen,” Mr Kolenda said, encouraging locals to shop around.

Solid to strong market condi-tions prevailed in most capital cities as house and unit prices continued to rise over the June quarter, according to the latest Australian Property Monitors’ Quarterly Housing Report. Over the June quarter, the national median house price repeated its March quarter performance to increase by another +1.9 per cent. Meanwhile, the national median unit price recorded a sturdy rise of +2.5 per cent, notably higher than the +1.6 per cent increase of the previous quarter.

The NSW property industry is the most optimistic in the nation – with new survey results revealing sentiment is continuing to rise. The Property Council/ANZ Property Industry Confi dence Survey shows the NSW confi dence index sits at 143 for the September quarter (where 100 is considered neutral). The survey is the largest national business confi dence survey and polled approximately 2,300 professionals from the property

and construction sector in all states and territories, including over 650 from NSW, for their forward-looking views. “The property industry underpins the health and vitality of the State economy,” says Property Council NSW Executive Director, Glenn Byres.

Six playgrounds will be upgraded with the latest, contemporary equipment in St Clair, Emu Heights, Erskine Park, Cranebrook (two), and Jamison-town as part of Council’s forward works programs. Penrith Mayor

Ross Fowler (pictured) said kids deserved the best play equip-ment Council could provide and their programs had seen nine playgrounds replaced in the past year alone.

Council has received an appli-cation to turn 4-5 Production Place, into a place of worship. The site is occupied by an existing large single industrial building that was previously used as a training, warehouse and distri-bution centre for Tony Ferguson.

Kingswood continues to be a hot spot for medium density development. Council is in receipt of a development appli-cation for 92-94 Great Western Highway, Kingswood. The devel-opment proposal involves the demolition of the existing dwell-ings and structures on the site and the construction of a total of 10 two-storey, four-bedroom townhouses. In addition, a number of ancillary elements are incorporated into the proposal that is before Council.

I t’s the start of August and that means it’s only a month until good old Spring clean-ing time. If you’re going to

clean out the clutter it pays to have storage ideas in mind to organise yourself post clean and make next year’s job that little bit easier.

Bunnings National Storage Buyer, Daniel Gibney, has some great ideas for you to keep your belongings organised, no matter what area of the house you’re working with.

The laundry is a great place to start. While a laundry basket is something many homes use to organise dirty clothes, why not go one step further and have separate baskets for dark, light and delicate clothes to make the job easier when it comes to washing time. For mops and brooms keep them out of the way by mounting them on the wall with some hooks. Make the most of what you have to work with by utilising spare wall space above the washer and

dryer with cabinets and shelves. There you can use labelled boxes stacked on top of each other to store smaller items.

Moving on to the kitchen pantry it’s a great idea to keep things organised by storing items in food groups, with the most frequently used products in prime position on the shelf. Sliding drawers and

baskets are also a great idea to make products easy to access. Finally, make sure to utilise the pantry door with some hooks to hold aprons and tea towels.

Coloured buck-ets can be attached to the wall by screwing the bottom of the buckets to the wall using heavy-duty screws. Utilise the ceiling space as well with large hooks to suspend bicycles, camping chairs

or garden tools. If you’ve got a few hobbies like fi shing or camping why not store any equipment in separate plastic crates or bins and label them so next time you want to drop a line you’ll have every-thing you need within easy reach.

Tips to be bet-ter organised

Labels: You can’t have enough labels. Why not even label the box you keep your labels in? When you put something away that you don’t use regularly, you’ll simply forget where it is and end up ripping up half the house to find it. Labelling things properly will save you a lot of hassle.

Lists: When doing a spring clean or getting your house more organised, create a list of things to do and work your way through it. You can even have different types of lists. For example, a list of things you must do, and a list of things that you would like to do in the long term.

Rules: Put things back where you found them! It’s an old rule we learn when we’re young, but it’s one that we should all stick to. If something is in a certain drawer, make sure it finds its way back to that drawer after you use them. Keep your keys in the one place and train yourself to always put them there, for example.

Rewards: Reward yourself for being organised. For example, if you’ve cooked at home every day for a week and that was your goal, treat yourself to a meal out. If you’ve cleaned the house from top to tail, do some shopping to reward yourself. Rewarding yourself for great efforts and keeping yourself organised is a great way to stay motivated.
