It’s a thumbs up

for St Thomas

Crashes triple at ‘tricky’ roundaboutBY MAX TOWLEPolice are worried about a “tricky” roundabout where crashes have tripled since its redevelopment in 2012.

There were nine crashes on the Halswell Junction Rd and Springs Rd multi-lane roundabout last year after it reopened in December 2012 to accommodate the first stage of the Southern Motorway.

Of those crashes, one resulted in

a serious injury, five minor (two in the same crash), and four non-injury.

In the three years before devel-opment, the intersection saw an average of three crashes per year, one being a serious injury.

Police Senior Sergeant and com-munity services manager Peter Stills, who uses the “tricky” round-about every day, said he was wor-ried about its design.

“If you’re heading to town, you often get people turning right to-wards the motorway from the cen-tre lane,” he said.

“The right lane has the option to go straight ahead, so you often get drivers cutting across others.”

Senior Sergeant Stills said at rush hour a glut of drivers covering the lane markings made things difficult.

He said he often saw dangerous driving.

“People tend to be in a hurry so they would take risks that they otherwise wouldn’t take,” he said.

“It’s a large roundabout so driv-ers think if they pull out in front of someone, there’s a fair chance they’re going to get seen.

“I would urge all drivers using that intersection to be extra care-ful.”

Koru Care Annual Charity Auction

The vintage guardians of New Zealand’s skies formed a winged guard of honour for the guests attending the Koru Care Annual

Charity Auction, as they fi led past to take their places at the dinner tables on July 19. The Air Force Museum’s Aircraft Hall was fi lled with music and the cacophony of the loud and lively bidding for the luxury items, in which was the smartest and biggest hanger party of the year.

Following the dinner, and with attendees emptier in the pocket than at the beginning of the evening, the counting could begin to eventually

enable Koru Care children to take their dream holiday to Disneyland. Canterbury people stepped out on a cold and rainy night and with the national carrier, Air New Zealand, celebrated the 30th Koru Care anniversary in style and with generosity.

Bid to improve mall parkingBY GABRIELLE STUART

Parking is becoming a prob-lem at The Hub Hornby, and developers of new shopping areas are predicting customer numbers to grow.

The Hornby Working Men’s Club has recently announced they are working on a new de-velopment on land behind the mall.

Anytime Fitness, The Baby Factory,  Bed Bath & Beyond and Toyworld have already signed up to lease space in the new development.

Meanwhile, expansion is also under way inside the mall.

The existing Farmers store in the mall is set to more than triple in size, while a new food court and space for new shops will also be opened.

Mall manager, Colliers In-ternational retail director Evan Harris, said parking had al-ready become a problem.

He said there were usually spaces available at the rooftop car park, but people often chose to circle the bottom car parks instead, which caused congestion.

He said the developments would include extending the rooftop car park to provide about 300 new car parks.

But Hornby Working Men’s Club general manager Daniel Ferguson said rooftop parking had been rejected as an option for their development because it was not well used.

“We have looked at rooftop parking, but the cost was pro-hibitive and at the moment it does not seem to be well used at the mall.”

Mr Harris said that the mall planned to improve access to the centre from the rooftop car park, and he believed that would improve people’s use of it.

“Hopefully the new car park will become the park of choice for our shoppers.”

Construction of the Uni-Cycle cycleway is expected to start in November, after a bid to delay the project failed.

The planned cycleway will run from Canterbury University to the city, and is the first of the 13 ma-jor routes in the $68.3 million city council cycleway network.

Representatives from Christ-church Girls’ High School and the Ministry of Education asked the city council on Thursday to delay finalising plans for the cycleway by up to three months.

The school wanted to finalise its own plans for rebuilding and extending earthquake-damaged buildings before work on the cycle-way started.

Their plans involved buying parts of Matai St, which would require the street to be closed to traffic or reduced to one lane.

But city council staff said that would not be possible, because of the amount of traffic using the street and because there were residents living on the street who needed access to their homes.

Resource Management Group consultant Darryl Millar, who rep-resented the school at the meeting, said extending into the street was the only option for the school.

The school is bordered by the Avon River to one side, and sur-rounded by public roads.

He said that both the cycleway and the school development were projects being done for the com-munity, and he hoped the city

council would take the time to make sure the projects aligned.

But deputy mayor Vicki Buck said it was a safety issue for stu-dents cycling to the school.

“I think their safety matters. I’m happy that we work with the school

around alternatives, but I’m not happy to delay these cycleways, now, or later, or at any time.”

City councillor Phil Clearwater agreed.

“There’s huge traffic congestion problems on Riccarton Rd, and the cycleway here will make travelling to school safer for cyclists. We can-not possibly delay this.”

School board of trustees chair-man Mike Lay said that the school fully supported the concept of the cycleway.

But he said that the proposed changes at the school, particularly around the entrances and exits, could cause safety issues for cyclists using the new cycleway.

He said that the school would go ahead with its plans.

“We’ll just have to proceed with our planning, and should there be a change in entrances and exits the council will have to understand that it may compromise the cycle-way – and we don’t want that to happen.”

City councillor Yani Johanson said the council needed to make sure that staff continued to work with the school.

He recommended that a group be set up to work with the Minis-try of Education around the rede-velopment of Christchurch Girls’ High School and other schools.

No delay to cycleway plans

So, tell me what you’re working on at the moment?

I’ve got an exhibition I’ll be hanging on Friday, out in Darfield. The exhibition will be a mix of paintings and sculpture. I’ll have five pieces in it from a bit of series, alongside the work of two other artists.

Last time we spoke you were looking for an engineer to help with your Duke Kahanamoku wave sculpture. Did you find one?

I’m still looking. I have just been ringing the council about it this morning, and I’ve already rang around a few of my friends, but no one seems to know anyone who could do it.

Why do you need an engineer to help with this piece?

Because it is extremely large, and it’s important that it is com-pletely safe.

Have you ever done anything of this scale before?

I’ve never done anything this large. It will be 8m long, or maybe

even nine – we have not con-firmed yet, because they haven’t yet confirmed the budget. Every-thing I’ve done so far has been on a volunteer basis.

How long have you worked as a sculptor?

I’ve been sculpting for around 30 years. It was while I was work-ing on a movie, way back then, that I was inspired to start sculpt-ing. At the beginning I always did a lot of clay work, and I went to a pottery studio at Mt Pleasant to learn how to work clay. It was around that time that limestone came into fashion and I did a sym-posium focusing on limestone.

From then on I have hardly looked back. I love that process of taking away, rather than adding as is done in clay. Since then I’ve done a few ice sculptures, and some work overseas – I was sent with some other artists to our sister city in Adelaide to work on some projects there. I’ve done a few council commissions, includ-ing the large koru out the back of Stanmore Rd, which was quite a big challenge.

You mentioned that you were working on a movie 30 years ago. What were you doing?

My friend, Trixie, was a costume designer and I was her helper. It really wasn’t my thing!

So what was it that inspired you to start sculpting?

At the time I just wanted to find what I was, and what I wanted to do. The movie is called Illustri-ous Energy, and in it there were circus scenes with some amaz-ing papier mache sculptures. I absolutely loved them. I had just returned from travelling the world for about 18 months and, looking back at my photos, they were all of sculptures.

Where did you travel? Or would it be easier to list where you didn’t go?

Probably. I went all through Asia and all through Europe, and I came home via Sri Lanka where

I stayed for three months. I made some amazing friends there who have remained my friends for life – which is why I went to Hawaii earlier this year, to create a com-mission for one of my friends.

And you did some research for the New Brighton sculpture while you were there?

Yes. While I was there I met with Sandy Hall, who wrote a book about Duke, and we spent the day wandering the parts of Honolulu where he lived, because I needed to understand who he was. There was a sculpture of him on the foreshore, and photos of him all over the walls of the cafes there. People still put leis on them

in his honour every day. By the end of the day I was madly in love with him, so it worked.

Did it change your plans for the sculpture?

In some ways. I spent hours down at the beach watching the waves and drawing the waves. I wanted to create a Hawaiian wave, rather than a New Brighton wave, and they are very different. I wanted to capture that blue-green translucence.

Now I’m experimenting with how to incorporate glass and fibre optics into the concrete to create that translucence.

After all your travel to exotic locations, what is it that keeps you coming back to South New Brighton?

I love living in South New Brighton. It’s being beside the beach. I’m a country girl – I grew up in Akaroa – so for me its like heaven, like living out in the coun-try. Sometimes I go for wanders down the beach, and I’m the only one out there.

I’ve heard legends of your sculpture garden. How did it start?

I was working on some sculptures with a friend, a deaf and blind guy called Donald Gibson. I needed more space for the work, so I asked council if I could use the sand dunes opposite my house.

Since then I got several well-known sculptures from across the country, and one English man too, to create sculptures there, and I’ve developed a garden around them.

On the crest of a wave and carving Artist Bon Suter is about to start work on a giant sculpture near the New Brighton Pier, to mark 100 years since the visit of Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku to the area. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about her work across the world, in movies, on people’s feet and on the dunes of New Brighton.

SCULPTED: Artist Bon Suter at her home in South New Brighton, where she has developed a public sculpture garden extending out onto the dunes.

Do you get a lot of visitors stop by to see it?

I do get quite a lot, mainly overseas visitors. Because I’ve chosen to live in south New Brighton, it’s the road to no-where really, not many people come down this way. So it’s mostly tourists.

If you weren’t an artist, what would you be doing?

I would still be working as a reflexologist, or I do like work-ing with people with disabilities as well.

I worked for a few years in nursing, but at that stage I had three little children, so I left nursing and studied alternative health. I started a clinic and worked for several years as a reflexologist, but I was the only one at that stage and I had so many people coming to me that I burnt myself out. So I decided to massage stone, not people’s feet!

Do you think you’d ever go back to it?

No. I still do it for free for my friends sometimes if they have something ailing them.

There’s always been that stereotype of the starving artist – how difficult is it to actually make a living from your work?

It’s very hard. You never ever get paid enough for the hours you put in to a piece. I’ve already put in about 100 hours for this wave, which I won’t be paid for, and I’ve spent a fair amount on materials. It will probably cost me more than I will get back.

So what is it that keeps you working as an artist?

The thing I love most is just the fact that I am my own boss and can do my own thing completely. I either do some gardening or get out and work on the sculptures. If it’s a lovely day, there’s nothing better than being out on the dunes.

You mentioned your three small children – they can’t be very small anymore. Do they still live nearby?

I’m incredibly lucky, be-cause almost all my family live in South New Brighton. My

children have all grown up and live in South New Brighton, although one is in Bali and one in England at the moment. They both still have houses here and plan to come back. The third had his house here too, but he’s living with me at the moment as his place was badly damaged in the quakes. It’s lovely to have them so close because I have three grandchildren now as well.

My sister’s here and my brother is in Woolston, so he’s not too far away.

That must be unusual these days. Why do you think they’ve

all stayed so close? It think it’s just really nice to

be so close to family, and it’s a beautiful place to live.

What are your favourite things to do in your free time – if you have free time.

I love walking. I love tramping and going out into the bush, and I love wandering the beach.

What about music? Is there anything you particularly like to listen to while you work?

I usually listen to the national radio programmes to be honest. I quite like classical and blues style, and I went to a concert in Lyttelton the other day which was wonderful – I love to listen to music live.

You’ve visited a lot of amaz-ing spots around the world – is there anywhere you would still like to visit?

At the top of my bucket list is Istanbul. All of my friends who have been there say it is breath-taking.

As far as your work goes, is there anything you would still like to create or achieve?

This great big wave that I’ve been commissioned to build is like the ultimate for me. I’m so honoured to be asked to do it, and so happy that I can create something for the community that I love. There are all sorts of challenges to working with con-crete, so this stuff really appeals. And it’s a collaborative project, which means I won’t be doing all the back-breaking work on my own.

Wigram electorate candidate Karl Varley compares placing 67th on the National Party list to earning a place on the All Blacks benches.

Even if he did not make it to Par-liament, he said he felt honoured to be named on the list.

“Would you complain about being named a reserve on the All Blacks bench?”

The businesses strategist was 75th on the National Party list for the 2011 election.

That year he was involved with Christchurch Central MP Nicky Wagner’s election campaign as the electorate chair, but this will be the first time he has campaigned for an electorate seat.

He will be up against current Wi-gram MP Megan Woods, who won the seat by 1500 votes in 2011.

Mr Varley believed it would be difficult to win the seat.

But he said he planned a long-term campaign for the electorate, and would be back at the next elec-tion if he did not win the seat.

“For a business, you map out goals for the next 20 years, because if you know where you want to go you’re far more likely to get there. That’s certainly the plan with Wigram.”

Mr Varley comes from a back-ground in business strategy, and has built up several businesses as an entrepreneur.

He grew up near Wanaka, and said he had to borrow money from his brother for a bus ticket to Christ-church when he was 17.

Within 10 years he had started several businesses and built them into multi-million dollar companies.

At the age of 28 his first son was born, and he gave up work for a year to stay at home with his son.

“At that stage I was often working 80 hours a week, and I realised I was missing out on my son. So I sold out of the business.”

He said that was when he became interested in politics, as he began de-veloping systems to help businesses run smoothly without so much time being involved.

“From my experience it was the business owners who worked hard-est and took the risks, and they were

often the last to get paid if things were tight. But they were treated like they were rich, and taxed more. It seemed counterproductive to me.”

He said that his goal in politics was to put good systems in place to make things easier for people.

He said his three main motiva-tions were the rebuild of Christ-church, developing “what could be, not what was”; to make New Zea-land a better place for families; and to make the country a better place for his sons.

Mr Varley is currently living in Northwood with his partner, Sonia, and his sons, who are now aged one and 14.

He fits his campaigning around his work as a business strategist, speak-ing at business seminars around the country.

The principal of a school closed in recent Ministry of Education cutbacks has taken to politics in a bid to reform education.

A year after Branston In-termediate School in Hornby was closed by the Ministry of Education, former principal Jennifer O’Leary is working as a volunteer for the Labour Party.

She said her experience spurred her to help reform education in an area still re-covering from Education Min-ister Hekia Parata’s decision.

“I feel a sense of relief to re-tire, yet a sense of uncertainty at the current state of educa-tion in the hands of the right wing party,” she said.

“The damage done is ir-reparable and after six years in power [for the National Party] I feel it is time for a change.”

News of Branston Interme-diate’s closure came as a shock to parents, staff and members of the community.

Before Mrs O’Leary heard the news, she thought she still had at least two or three more

years left in the role before retirement.

Although she said she was “apolitical,” she turned to poli-tics shortly after the closure to support Wigram MP Megan Woods.

She said Dr Woods was a “voice of the people” in Parlia-ment last year.

Mrs O’ Leary has no previ-ous work in politics, but the goal of working towards a better education system is nothing new.

She said the transition from principal to advocate was an easy process.

“I use to be in a position where I gave all of the orders, but now I am in a setting where I am the one being told what to do. It’s kind of nice,” she said.

“My role includes doing office work that I used to have others do for me when I was a principal. I also attend meet-ings and get training for future events such as the upcoming election.”

One of her roles she is cur-rently training for is delivering voting ballots to people who cannot make it to the polling stations on election day.

The Salvation Army’s Family Store in Hornby is celebrating its first birthday this month.

Since opening on August 12, 2013, the store has drawn increasing numbers of shoppers, who flock there both for the wide selection of quality merchandise and the attractive way the stock is presented.

“The feedback from customers to what we are doing has been 100 per cent positive,” store manager Terry Murray says. “The customers absolutely love it.”

Since opening, the store has been expanded with 50 sqm of extra space, and whatever people are looking for, they are almost certain to find it on the shelves and racks. Everything from clothing, shoes, handbags, books, CDs and DVDs, to all types of linen, furniture, electrical goods, kitchen utensils, crockery, toys and general bric-a-brac is on display.

Customers come not only from the surrounding areas, but also from other parts of the city.

“The word is getting out there that this is the store to come to. It’s a destination store for people from further away, and that’s very encouraging for us,” Terry says.

Terry and the staff welcome customers to come to the fresh, modern store and enjoy the experience.

“We are convinced after your visit you will become a regular,” Terry says.

The Hornby Salvation Army Family Store is located on the corner of Shands and Amyes roads, close to Dressmart, with plenty of off-street parking available. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm and Saturday 9.30am to 1.30pm. Phone 349-4163.

Donations of quality second-hand items are welcomed at the shop or can be collected by truck. Volunteers are also invited to join the team.

FOOD

Lamb roasted with kaffir lime leaves and garlicKaffir lime leaves are available from the herb section of supermarkets. Serve with a pinot noir.

1.2kg lamb leg 4 large kaffir lime leaves 8 large cloves garlic, halved lengthwise Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Thai-style mint sauce: ¼ cup rice vin-egar 2 tbsp each: palm or brown sugar, rice bran oil 1 tbsp fish sauce Grated rind and juice 1 lime 2-3 red chillies, seeded and thinly sliced 1 and ½ cups mint leaves, sliced Preheat oven to 160 deg C.

Make slits in lamb leg large enough to hold lime leaves and garlic cloves.

Remove central vein from lime leaves. Divide leaves so you have four por-

tions from each leaf. Insert in slits together with garlic

cloves. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast

lamb for about 30 minutes per 500g. Tent with foil and cover with a thick

towel. Rest for 10 minutes before slic-ing. To make the sauce, whisk sugar with all liquid ingredients. Add chillies and mint leaves.

Serve at room temperature. Serves 6

Slow-roasted Middle Eastern-style lamb legBeautifully slow-roasted lamb is a delight to share with family or dinner guests. Serve with flat bread moistened with a little harissa sauce or drizzle it over the lamb for some extra flavour. It keeps well in the refrigerator.

Lamb4 Tbsp Olive oil1 Leg of lamb3 cm Fresh ginger, crushed3 cloves Garlic, crushed1 Lemon, rind and juice1 bunch Fresh coriander, chopped2 cups Water

Spice mix1 tsp Ground cloves2 tsp Black pepper1 tsp Fennel seeds2 tsp Ground cumin1 tsp Ground cinnamon1 Tbsp Paprika1 tsp Salt

Salad and sauce2 Lebanese cucumber1 cup Plain unsweetened yoghurt1 tsp Flaky sea salt1 cup Mint leaves2 tsp Sumac powder120g Tomatoes, chopped20g Tomato paste

20g Harissa paste1 Tbsp Olive oilDirectionsScore the surface of the lamb with a sharp knife, making 2cm slits in the fat and skin.

Put the ginger, garlic, coriander, lemon rind and juice and oil in a small bowl and mix well. Add the spice mix ingredients and stir in.

Rub the marinade over the surface of the lamb, working it into the cuts. Leave it at room temperature for an hour or refrigerate overnight so the flavours are absorbed.

Preheat the oven to 150 deg C.Put the lamb into a roasting pan with 2 cups

of water, cover with foil, then roast for about 3½ hours or until the meat is very tender.

Baste often with the liquid in the pan. Remove the foil, then increase the heat a little

for 20-30 minutes so the skin becomes crisp. Remove from the oven and rest the meat before slicing.

Serve with Middle Eastern-style flat bread and the accompaniments listed below.

Cucumber, mint and yoghurt saladPeel the cucumber lightly and cut into thin strips. Place these in a small serving bowl and toss well with the yoghurt and salt. Add the mint leaves and gently toss through so that they are just mixed but not drowned by the yoghurt. Sprinkle the sumac over the top and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.

Tomato and harissa sauceCombine the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, harissa paste, tablespoon of olive oil and salt.

HEALTH

Keep an eye on early birds

Don’t trust a “morning person” in the evening because people who are perky in the early hours are more likely to be dishonest later in the day, researchers say.

Psychologists from three United States universities studying how the internal body clocks of humans influence their ethical choices found that when a person’s energy levels are depleted they find it harder to resist dishonourable temp-tations. The converse is true of “night owls”, who are more likely to behave unethically in the morning.

The study, titled The Morality of Larks and Owls, examined the behaviour of 200 people who were given problem-solv-ing tests and games to complete at different times of day without being told that the scientists were actually studying their honesty.

Building on previous research suggesting people become more unethical as the day wears on, the researchers from Johns Hopkins University, George-

town University and the Uni-versity of Washington examined the relationship between energy patterns and ethics.

They focused on the human circadian rhythm, or body clock, which controls wakeful-ness and sleep and varies across individuals, meaning that some people naturally rise early, while others prefer to stay up late.

One part of the study was a dice-rolling test, which took place either early in the morn-ing (7 to 8.30) or late at night (midnight to 1.30). The partici-pants were asked to roll the dice

and report the number they threw, knowing that they would be paid higher cash rewards for higher numbers.

The team found that larks in the night session reported higher rolls than those in the morning session, while owls in the morning session reported higher rolls than owls in the night session.

The results tallied with the hypothesis that morning people would behave less honestly in the evening, when they were most tired, whereas night owls would do so in the morning.

The findings undermined the commonly held idea that early risers are more honest than people who regularly stay up into the early hours. “They cast doubt on the stereotype that evening people are somehow dissolute,” the researchers said.

A summary of findings from the study, published in the Harvard Business Review, said: “In contrast to the assumption that good people typically do good things, and bad people do bad things, there is mounting evidence that good people can be unethical and bad people can be ethical, depending on the pressures of the moment.”

One of the study’s authors, Sunita Sah of Georgetown University, said the findings had implications for businesses that relied on employees working late night and early morning shifts, as it proved that some people would be better at mak-ing decisions at certain times of day than others.

The authors also suggested that future research could be carried out to establish whether certain “interventions”, such as a mid-day nap, might redress the balance and make early risers more honest later in the day.

The findings will be outlined in full in the journal Psycho-logical Science later this year. — Independent

Is your garden ready for the summer season?

A bit of quick colour can do wonders, so fill bowls with flowering plants like petunias, geraniums or lobellias.

Container plants are popular but when it comes to potting mix, confusion reigns. Is potting mix really necessary? Won’t soil do the same job?

And is it true that potting mix can be dangerous to handle?

Here are some answers to these common questions:

Why should I use a qual-ity potting mix?

A quality potting mix provides the best grow-ing medium for container plants.

Quality potting mixes, unlike soil, maintain a prop-er balance between holding moisture and draining well.

This means that plant roots can have access to sufficient water without the risk of drowning or dying from lack of oxygen.

Soil, because its texture varies so greatly, isn’t always suitable to use in pots.

Potting mixes can be specifically formulated for special purposes and situations.

This means you can

provide plants with the most suitable conditions for healthy growth.

Tips for re-potting Start by watering thor-

oughly. Invert the pot and carefully remove the plant. Don’t pull it by the stem. Sometimes it helps to roll the pot on its side and squeeze gently to loosen the roots. In extreme cases it may be nec-essary to break the old pot or cut it away from the root ball. Remove some of the old potting mix and check the roots for damage or disease. Trim these back to a healthy section.

Re-pot into (preferably) a slightly larger pot. Firm into place but don’t press too hard or you’ll risk damag-ing the roots. Leave at least 2cm of space at the top of the mix for watering. Water thoroughly.

This settles the mix into place and removes air pock-

ets. A few weeks later, feed with a fertiliser that suits container plants.

Don’t use dry, granular fertilisers – such as rose food – because there’s too great a risk of burn-ing roots. Instead stick to controlled release or liquid plant foods.

Is potting mix danger-ous?

Like soil and organic mat-ter, potting mixes may carry any one of a range of benefi-cial or harmful bacteria.

To avoid problems it’s best to follow some simple precautions when handling any of these materials.

Keep potting mix moist, avoid breathing dust from potting mix, wear gloves and, most importantly, wash your hands with soap and water when you’ve finished potting, or working with soil or organic matter.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEAT PUMPS

If you are rebuilding or repairing your home, Enviro Master can offer you a complete solution to meet your individual heating, cooling and ventilation needs.

Many housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best

to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation.

Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy-efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9 kilowatt of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma) benefits no other heating appliance can offer.

Ducted and multi-systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climate-controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems.

Enviro Master Ltd is your air conditioning and heat pump specialist and has been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now.

Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands, including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin.

This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump.

Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

We currently have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price on selected models.

outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not eff ective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

We breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air everyday. It is, therefore, very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets

the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffi ness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation. However, as winter approaches, we start to shut up houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline.

Late winter is the season when deciduous magnolias are at their best.

August seems to force these gorgeous flowers to open in a rush. The breathtaking sight of the large, tulip-like blooms perching on bare branches can send passers-by rushing to the nursery to buy something similar.

There are dozens of magnolia varieties, and making a choice can be a formidable task.

The names are confusing so it’s usually easiest to forget nomenclature and just go for the flower you like most (remembering, of course, to check the ultimate height on the label).

Most grow into small trees but, if space is tight, look for one of the shrub-sized star magnolias.

Because magnolias come from cool climates with rich, moisture-holding soil, keeping them happy through hot New Zealand summers can be a challenge. It’s important to take the opportunity to improve the soil as much as possible before planting.

Choose a spot that gets at least half a day’s sun and is pro-tected from strong winds.

Start by clearing grass or ground-covering plants from an area about 1m across, then dig plenty of manure or good compost and some longlasting fertiliser into the soil.

Because magnolias hate being dry, it can also be helpful to add some water-storing crystals into the planting area.

Create a planting hole that’s about twice the size of the pot and approximately the same depth.

Take the plant out of the pot with care (magnolias hate root disturbance) and sit it into the planting hole. Backfill, then water well to settle everything into place.

Lastly, spread a layer of or-ganic mulch. This will keep the soil moist and stop competitive grass from growing back over the root area.

Once the magnolia is well established you can plant some bulbs around the base to add extra interest in late winter and spring.

Michael Winstanley FdSc Arboriculture,ISA Certified Arborist # UI-1162AT

Arborists specialise in the care of individual trees. They are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.Services an Arborist can Provide:• Pruning: An arborist can determine the type

of pruning necessary to maintain or improve the health, appearance, and safety of trees.

• Tree Removal: Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. An arborist can help decide whether a tree should be removed.

• Emergency Tree Care: An arborist can assist in performing emergency tree care in a safe manner, while reducing further risk of damage to property.

• Planting: Some arborists plant trees, and most can recommend species that are appropriate for a particular location.

• Plant Health Care: Preventive maintenance helps keep trees in good health while reducing any insect, disease, or site problems.

• Many other services: Consulting services, tree risk assessment, cabling and bracing trees, etc

Tips for choosing an arboristGet more than one quote unless you know, and are comfortable with the arborist.Don’t always accept the lowest bid, it pays to check credentials to ensure that you get what you pay forBe wary of cold calling individuals and those who go door to door offering bargains for performing tree work. Most reputable companies are usually too busy to solicit work in this manner For more information or a free no obligation quote contact Michael on 021 0831 7293/ 03 3602962. Are you living with the pain of arthritis? If you are, you may benefit from an exercise programme. Appropriate

exercise can result in reduced pain, reduced stiffness, improved function and better overall wellbeing.

Arthritis New Zealand offers both land and water-based exercise classes in Christchurch. These are held at various times and venues across the city.

An exciting new option is the PEDAL Programme. This joint initiative between Arthritis New Zealand and Sport Canterbury is a an eight-week programme combining stationary cycling and skills for people with arthritis affecting their lower limbs. This free programme commences on Monday, August 4. For further information on any of these exercise programmes, phone 0800 663 463 toll- free, or visit www.arthritis.org.nz.

There are 530,000 New Zealanders living with arthritis and it’s one of the leading causes of disability in New Zealand. And while it is certainly true that many older people have arthritis, it is completely misleading to think of arthritis as being an older person’s disease because arthritis can occur to anyone at any age.

Exercisecan relievearthritis pain Numerous studies have shown

Red Yeast Rice (RYR) extract to be an e ective, safer option to maintain healthy cholesterol

levels in most people. RYR has long been used in China as a natural preservative, spice and food colouring and is what gives the famous Peking duck its red colour. It has also been used for over a 1000 years as a common Chinese medicine, especially for digestion and healthy blood circulation.

Although RYR contains a nutrient called monacolin K that is chemically similar to the man-made chemical used in statin drugs, a main di erence is it is a natural substance that the body knows how to handle.

Reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease naturally

Glucosamine & Chondroitin essential for JOINT HEALTH

JOINT HEALTH

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is also known as degenerative joint disease, and it is characterised by loss

of cartilage and joint degeneration causing pain, joint sti ness and reduced mobility.

An essential building block for cartilage is glucosamine. Healthy joints actually make their own glucosamine, but only produce cartilage when glucosamine is plentiful. Researchers have found taking su cient glucosamine appears to trigger the joints’ own production of glucosamine and formation of new cartilage in many cases. It has also been shown to reduce pain and increase joint mobility better than taking

pharmaceutical pain relievers.Chondroitin sulphate is a natural part of

cartilage and connective tissue. Researchers have found if they supply the body with extra chondroitin from shark cartilage, this helps by supplying nutrients for the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue. It acts like a uid magnet, drawing uids and nutrients into the cartilage, enabling it to grow and be replaced.

Glucosamine and chondroitin in su cient amounts appear to have a synergistic a ect and may speed the formation of new cartilage and connective tissue.

Phone Marshall’s Health & Natural erapy on 388 5757.

RYR has been shown to maintain the good HDL cholesterol, while reducing LDL cholesterol but also very e ective at reducing triglycerides that have been shown to be a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Not only this, but RYR has also been shown to lower lipoprotein(a), a damaging blood fat that can have 10 times greater risk factor for cardiovascular disease than high LDL cholesterol.

Statins are known to reduce Co-Q10 levels that can cause muscle pain, aching joints, low energy and cardiovascular problems. As a precaution and for extra cardiovascular protection, CO-Q10 is added to RYR formulas.

Designed for the family with three living spaces, including a home theatre room with surround sound speakers in the ceiling, so it’s just like you’re at the movies! e kitchen is awesome with a butler’s pantry, induction hob and a convection oven, so as you can see it’s been built with a great budget and features all the extras! Many of us know the two very useful phrases “BTB” and “PB” – Better than Before and Personal Best. One of the key functions of schooling is to show students that all big aims, goals and targets can be broken down into smaller steps which are entirely achievable. Do each thing right and in the right order. These smaller steps accumulate day by day into progress and achievement which otherwise might have been thought as unattainable. The longest journey begins with the first step and, like this, NCEA success itself is cumulative. For schools, term 3 is a very busy time academically with many internal assessments and cementing the knowledge before the busyness of term 4 and the external exams. Students understand that one event builds on another – there is a logical shape to the school terms and year – and each individual BTB effort, hour by hour, day by day brings rewards. Academic and social learning support one another – they are indivisible. As this page shows, a modern secondary school creates many and diverse opportunities for students to participate in a range of experiences, thereby developing themselves socially. Staff, families and the students

work hard together to ensure these experiences occur. This in itself is community building. An extra and very welcome factor to life at Hornby HS is the planning for the rebuilding of our school, 2015-2017. Initial scoping discussions about this are beginning between our Board and the Ministry of Education, and this term will involve wide community consultation. Of course we all know that the teacher is the most important

part of any student’s learning, but it is also equally clear that purpose-built facilities and equipment can help the teaching and learning process. Our students will be in the best of current classroom design and have full access to technology. In such environments learning can be individualised and students see pathways for themselves that engage and inspire them. We will have a 21st century school for 21st century learners. Finally schools can be complex places. If for any reason you wish to talk to me about an issue please contact the office to arrange a time for this to occur. My door is open.

The Hub Hornby, proud to support Hornby High School

Students gain points each term according to how well they manage to live by the Key Competencies of managing themselves, participating, contributing and relating well to others. We know that high points in the Skills for Learning (ISLA) programme point to NCEA success in later years. Pictured at their “well done” morning tea are Haydon Dickie, Campbell Woodward, George Khella, Jack Woodgate and Jack Fisher.

At the end of term assembly the school community, staff and students presented the principal, Richard Edmundson, with a Korowai cloak as a token of the respect and esteem we have for him. The cloak was especially woven by the Ngati Koata Iwi from Nelson and has many features and patterns to represent the students, staff and family. Pictured is Richard Edmundson with Kaye Banks, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, flanked by head students Logan Collings and ‘Ailine Kei.

A group of Hornby students enjoyed warm weather during the July school holidays in Japan where they were hosted by our sister school, Tokiwagi Gakuen, in Sendai. This trip has taken place every two years for more than 20 years and is a highlight for all students and staff who travel. Pictured at left, is Taylor Polwart

enjoying lunch with her hosts, and above, a group of Hornby and Tokiwagi students posing for the camera.

Group visits sister school in Japan

With the expansion of the school to include Year 7 & 8s this year the Board made the decision to provide uniform to all the junior students and this included a new school jacket (value $130) for all students in Years 7 to 9. The jackets were funded by the Red Cross Earthquake Fund. We have had problems with the manufacturing, but at long last they are ready and our students should stay dry and warm for the remainder of the winter. Pictured are students from 9Mz modelling their new jackets.

New jackets now ready Skills for Learning celebrated at morning tea

Students in the Junior College have been learning about Business Enterprise and what better way to put what they have learnt into practice and hone their marketing skills but to hold a market at interval last week. Pictured are Shakira Hodgson and Ariana Nutira of 8Ph with an amazing range of goodies. All profits from the market go towards the Year 8 trip to Picton later this year.

Marketing flair put to the test
