PROGRAMME OF ARMENIAN STUDIES
(FORMERLY ARMENIAN STUDIES AT SOAS)
TEACHER: DR. KRIKOR MOSKOFIAN (SOAS,
UNIVERSITY OF LONDON)
WESTERN
ARMENIAN
CLASSES
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The courses run two hours each week over three weeks, with ten weeks each
term. The advanced class is one and a half hours each week. All courses start
in the first week of October.
Meticulously designed, the first two courses were previously approved by and
taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The textbooks are
authored by the teacher. The advanced course is a work in progress.
ELEMENTARY WESTERN ARMENIAN
MONDAYS, 6.00PM - 8.00PM
The objective of this course is to provide students with all the basic skills
required in Western Armenian at an elementary level. At the end of this
course, students should be able to express simple ideas, wishes, and thoughts
on a variety of topics. They should be able to engage in simple conversations
with native speakers, write simple sentences and read basic texts.
INTERMEDIATE WESTERN ARMENIAN
WEDNESDAYS, 7.30PM - 9.30PM
This course is designed to build on what students will have learned in
Elementary Western Armenian. It covers many aspects of the grammar to
take students to a reasonable level of competence in reading, writing and
speaking. At the end of this course, students should be able to engage in
conversation with native speakers on most topics relating to daily life, write
sentences of reasonable complexity on the same themes, and the read the
kinds of texts available in newspapers etc.
ADVANCED WESTERN ARMENIAN
MONDAYS, 8.00PM - 9.30PM
This course is designed to consolidate the language acquired through the
elementary and intermediate courses. It also takes students to the next, more
challenging level of language knowledge. At the end of this course students
should have acquired a high level of sophistication in reading, writing and
speaking. Students should be able to communicate on a variety of topics of
social and cultural interest.
WHAT ARE OUR OBJECTIVES?
Our main objective is to continue the viable academic programme which was
established at the School of Oriental and African Studies, starting with the
teaching of Western Armenian.
These courses are the only academically viable ones in the UK. In some cases,
and for a variety of reasons, excellence is unfortunately overlooked when it
comes to teaching Western Armenian; this is not the case with the courses
offered here.
In the future, other courses will be introduced.
We will also promote Armenian Studies in different forms by organising
events at an academic level.
ASSESSMENT
Students are not asked to take tests or exams at the end of each term or at the
end of the course. However, if students so wish, at the end of the course an
exam and/or attendance certificate will be provided. In these cases a small
additional charge will be incurred.
