The Westchester Land Trust mission:

To conserve land in partnership with private property owners;

to help communities create new parks and preserves;

and to foster sound land use planning.

We have helped protect more than 6,600 acres.

t says something important about land

preservation that Westchester Land Trust

had one of its busiest and best years in

2008-2009 during a time of financial diffi-

culty.

Even when money is tight, land preser-

vation moves forward.

Last year, 20 projects that Westchester

Land Trust worked on came to fruition,

protecting 601 acres forever.

The 20 projects are the most for us in

any year since 2005.

Those 20 projects required the hard

work, dedication, time, expertise and

funding of 22 preservation partners.

In some cases we took the lead. In

others we worked with equal partners. In

still others we helped out where needed.

The bottom line though is that all the

partners played essential roles, and 20

projects that might otherwise have lan-

guished are now in the books.

The success of 2008-2009 also required

the generosity of more than 5,000 sup-

porters, who donated in amounts that

ranged from $25 to $100,000.

Westchester Land Trust has now pro-

tected 6,600 acres in 28 communities:

4,462 acres on 176 easements, 603 acres

on 29 preserves we own, and 1,539 acres

on 15 properties for which we helped ne-

gotiate preservation agreements.

Our complete list of land preservation

partners begins on page 9 and our finan-

cial supporters on page 11.

But we send out our thanks to all of

you right here.

here are many ways to measure land preservation success. You can

add up the total number of acres. You can count the number of

projects, or evaluate the quality of the land. You can list the number of

communities you’ve worked in. You can estimate the new recreation op-

portunities you’ve created.

By all of those criteria, 2008-2009 was a good year for Westchester

Land Trust, and by some it was a great year.

Measuring Our Successin Acres, Communities,Trails, Public Access

Page 5: Westchester Land Trust

Working with numerous partners in differ-

ent capacities, we helped complete 20

projects, protecting 601 acres in eight

communities.

The 20 projects were the most we

completed since 2005. They included

agricultural land, watershed protection

land, land that provides access to Long

Island Sound, and land with trails.

Fourteen of the 20 projects were con-

servation easements. They included our

biggest easement ever from an individ-

ual, two easements each on land

owned by Bedford Audubon Society

and the North Salem Open Land Foun-

dation, and even two easements on our

own land to Bedford Audubon.

Our projects protected farmland, watershed land, and land for recreation.

Working with numerous partners in different capacities, we helped complete 20 projects, protecting 601 acres in eight communities.

ur fiscal year starts in summer.

Throughout July and August, we

planned and assembled our first nature

quest -- a combination self-guided tour

and treasure hunt -- at the Frederick P.

Rose Preserve, in Lewisboro. The Rose

quest uses the remnants of the old Black

House Farm to explore local history. We

worked through the early fall to set it up,

and held the formal opening on a brisk,

clear day in November. We expected the

quest to be great fun for families, and we

were thoroughly pleased when dozens of

people showed up to participate.

The quest at the old BlackHouse Farm drewhundreds of visitors.

y October and November we were fully engaged in end-of-the-year

projects. We worked with Bedford Audubon and the North Salem

Open Land Foundation to put conservation easements on four of their

preserves (283 acres), and we drafted easements for two of our pre-

serves, Frederick P. Rose and Pine Croft Meadow, in Lewisboro.

Putting easements on land owned by preservation groups ensures that

it stays protected if anything happens to those groups. It’s our policy to

protect land we own with easements.

In December, we were offered land

in Mount Pleasant, by the Warwick Lane

Realty firm. It is only six acres yet we

realized during our first visit, in the sharp

light of a cold afternoon, that given its

location in the neighborhood and the

brook that bisected it, it had terrific con-

servation value. We accepted with grat-

itude and named it the Hardscrabble

Brook Preserve.

Before New Year’s we completed

n spring, we helped Mount Kisco and

North Castle buy 30 acres near Byram

Lake, Mount Kisco’s reservoir, preventing

six houses from being built. The land is now

the Byram Lake Preserve.

We worked with Rye and the Commit-

tee to Save the Bird Homestead to protect

the Bird Homestead, a one-acre gem with

access to Long Island Sound.

Peter Kamenstein and Larry Fink of

North Salem donated our biggest ease-

ment from an individual, 129 acres. By

summer, bobolinks were fledging their

young in the farm’s meadows.
