COMMUNITY CORNER

Did you notice there is someone missing when you go to or pass by the Reception Desk? Well, If you knew Susie, and who doesn’t, it all becomes clear. That lovely, little lady with the big smile is missing. Our friend, Susie Cross, has decided to retire after so often providing us with the answers to our many questions and responding to our many concerns. To be exact, it was 28 years ago that Susie came in to the Reception Desk and talked with Wendy Taylor, Former Reception Desk Supervisor, about a job and was hired as an “On call” person. “After clearly demonstrating her compassion for people,” Wendy said, “she was trained and quickly became a full-time employee.” Always ready to spring into action, she stands (literally) ready to serve anyone and everyone who approaches the desk. Nobody has ever seen Susie seated! When asked what she liked most about the

job, she will tell you it is greeting people...a job in which she excelled! A couple of the “unbelievable memories” to which she refers are the Snow Storm of 2010, the Earthquake, which took out the phone systems and they had to text all messages…it really shook things up around here, and the flood in the Library which was then a part of the Atrium area (just shelves and no walls) and many of the books had to be quickly moved to dry land by every staff member in sight. When she began her career here, she lived in South Arlington and walked to work. She later moved to Alexandria where she is looking forward to tea on the patio, no early alarm clock, a chance to read the newspaper and books, working in her flower garden, and a time to enjoy photography and a chance to slow down…hard for Susie to do. Susie takes great pride in being the only one out of five children who completed college with a degree. Hers was in Office Systems Technology. Her son and twin daughters have also succeeded in higher education. She is the proud grandmother of six and has one great-grandchild. Hers is a life to be celebrated and given recognition. We will miss her! Dottie Moser, Resident

AROUND THE COMMUNITY

CHINA: POWER AND PROSPERITY

This important PBS story will be shown on Channel 2 Wednesday, August 5, at 3:00 p.m.

The United States’ relationship with China has dominated conversations about U.S. foreign policy, trade and more recently, the global effort to combat coronavirus. Before COVID-19 cases were first reported out of China and before the pandemic swept across the globe, PBS NewsHour’s foreign affairs and defense correspondent, Nick Schifrin, traveled to China for a series of inside looks into the country. “China: Power and Prosperity” explores the future of the communist country’s relationship with the U.S., which will help determine the new international order, the dominant technology supporting the world’s communications infrastructure, and the global economy.

RECOMMENDED VIDEO TO UNDERSTAND DISCRIMINATION

The Spiritual Life Committee recommends the video Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes as part of its ongoing activity to raise awareness of the power structures that arise out of discrimination and to help develop anti-racist attitudes. The lessons learned will be part of the material for discussions to be planned periodically in the coming weeks. The video will be shown on Channel 2 on Thursday, August 6, at 1:00 p.m. The video can also be accessed on YouTube with the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mcCLm_LwpE and is listed among a number of videos on the Resident Website under “Spiritual Life Committee,” which is under “Resident Committees.”

As temperatures soar into the 90s and 100s, we wanted to educate you on risks that can occur with your medications. If you take certain drugs when it is hot, there can be serious, sometimes life-threatening, reactions. From a recent Washington Post article:

“Some medicines, such as diuretics, make our bodies lose water, which can result in dehydration when it’s hot outside. Others — such as beta blockers or ACE inhibitors — lower blood pressure, which makes fainting more likely in the heat. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors — commonly prescribed antidepressants like Prozac — can make us sweat more, also causing dehydration. Still others — the OTC allergy drug Benadryl, for example, Cogentin, a medication for Parkinson’s disease, and Spiriva, an asthma treatment — can reduce sweating, the body’s natural cooling mechanism, which can lead to overheating and heat stroke.”

What can you do to protect yourself? You can monitor weather forecasts and avoid going outside when it is very hot. You should exercise early in the morning or later in the evening. You should be careful if you start a new medication in the summertime, because your body needs time to adjust to the new drug. However, you should not stop taking a prescribed medication when it turns hot without consulting with your physician. You should store your medications in a cool, dry place, as heat exposure can affect their efficacy.

WEAR YOUR MASKS

We keep trying to emphasize the importance of using masks whenever you leave your apartments, as well as the fact that your wearing the mask protects others around you. You are protecting others in the community, and you depend on their mask-wearing to protect you.

Remember to wash your cloth mask every day you wear it. You can hand wash your cloth mask or just throw it in the washing machine. Hot water and soap will kill the virus.

REMEMBER TO WEAR YOUR MASK OVER YOUR NOSE AND MOUTH AT ALL TIMES WHEN IN PUBLIC AREAS.

DO NOT REMOVE YOUR MASK FOR SPEAKING.
