Why did you become a Kiwanian? Was your fa-

ther or grandfather a Kiwanian? Did you see the

impact that your club had in the local schools?

Did you attend a pancake breakfast somewhere

in WV and want to learn more? Why do we re-

main committed to serving the children of the

world? What matters most to you about Kiwanis? What do you

love? Now, who do you want to share it with? The Formula is an

opportunity for Kiwanians to shape the future of their clubs and

the service that impacts their communities.

“Love it” addresses the fact that Kiwanians have unique reasons

they became and remain members. It asks members to draw

from what they love about Kiwanis to talk to others about Kiwa-

nis.

“Share it” is what happens when members love their clubs. It’s

human nature to tell others about great experiences we have had

with Kiwanis, whether with helping with “Bringing up Grades” or

to help clean up the neighborhood by picking up trash to helping

at a fishing derby. This part of the story encourages Kiwanians to

spread the word about their clubs.

“Live it” Be proud Serve others! Show others that committed,

passionate individuals with a heart for children can make an im-

pact. Be a spoke person for that impact-and have energy for Ki-

wanis that is contagious. We should be proud to wear our Kiwanis

pin or logo and to engage in club activities.

This is The Formula: Love being a Kiwanian, Love your club,

Share it with others. Live it!

“I Love my club!” I want you to repeat this phase at your club

meetings.

Ken and I enjoyed a great evening with Logan County at their

90th birthday Thursday evening. The Meadows’ and I enjoyed the

charter reception for the Williamstown club on the 13th of May.

Division 4 under Shirley Keen warmly welcomed the governor

and first Gent to Philippi on May 17. Looking forward to the Mon-

roe charter dinner with Bill and Debbie May on May 5.

Keep on! Keeping on! Sherry

Kiwanis Club of North Marion:

Pictured are Governor Sherry Charles (center), North Marion club sec-

retary/treasurer Dana Powell (left) and club president Molly Kilcoyne-

Delaney.

Kiwanis Club of Logan: The club recently celebrated its 90th birthday.

Governor Sherry Charles is pictured center back. They also honored four members of their club—these four are William "Tank" Williams, jr seated on the left, Ed-ward Eiland, Rex Browning, and standing far right, How-ard McDonald. These four gentlemen have been a part of the Kiwanis Club of Logan for a combined 207 years. They are still an active part of the Logan club.

Kiwanis Club of Welch: Members worked the Professional Administrative Day along with the McDowell County Chamber of Commerce to honor the administrative assistants in the county. The Welch Kiwanis club honored their secretary.

Meet The High School Student Who Took Down A State Lawmaker:

Saira Blair is a 17 senior at Hedgesville High School. She is also the president of their Key Club. She ran in this spring’s Republican primary and defeated a two-term WV House representative. She will turn 18 in July and so will be eligible to run in the fall for the WV House.

Kiwanis Club of Huntington: 4/8/14 Last week was really busy with all of the activities surrounding our Spa-

ghetti Dinner. Thank you everyone who was able to help in any way! Special thanks need to go to our friends

and family that showed up to help. Please pass on our sincere thanks to them. We couldn’t have done it

without them. My best guess is that we served at least 50 extra meals this year. I know that Take Out was

just crazy. Money is still being collected so we have to wait to see how successful we were. Turn your money

in to me as soon as possible so we can all celebrate. We will be serving spaghetti again this week at lunch at

Our Lady of Fatima.

4/15/14 Our speaker last week was Patty Dickey, Director of Physicians and Community Service for HIMG,

who spoke on “Keeping healthy at every age.” Chronic disease is so expensive to treat and can often be pre-

vented or delayed. She stated that one benefit of Obamacare is that it will pay for well-care visits and can

help identify problems when they are easier to treat. Life style choices, like belonging to a service organiza-

tion like Kiwanis, can have a great impact on our health. Additionally, our diet and exercise choices help or

hurt our health. When you visit the doctor, know your numbers; make sure the results come back to you.

Bring your questions for the Doctor. Note that pre-authorization is your responsibility. In fact, healthcare has

become so complex that you must be your own advocate. The schedule of free screenings and community

programs at HIMG is available on the Internet at http://www.himgwv.com/services.

4/22/14 Our speakers last week were Dr. Ben Dickens and Kay Dickens, motivational speakers who asked

the question, “Are you ready?” Representing the Cabell County Health Department, they spoke on the need

to be prepared for anything. Natural disasters can happen at any time. In our area, we have the threat of

floods where two feet of moving water can carry away an SUV, ice which closes roads and brings down pow-

er lines, high winds, hazardous material sites, and the threat of tornadoes. Any of these can leave one unable

to obtain needed resources. You should have 48-72 hours’ worth of emergency supplies for your family and

for your pets. This would include items like water, a portable radio and batteries, flashlight and batteries, a

pipe wrench, duct tape, a First Aid kit with bandages, a whistle, disaster kit, emergency blanket, hand sanitiz-

er, handi wipes for sanitation, food , can opener, scissors, matches, candles, vital documents including copies

of prescriptions, and cash. You’ll want a small bag of hygiene items in case you need to enter a shelter. Have

a communication plan with your family so you know where you will meet and how you will communicate.

Additional supplies like water purification tablets can be located at Cabela’s and L. L. Bean.

5/5/14 Last week, our speaker was Jeanette Rowsey who spoke on "The History of Barboursville." She is a

seventh generation resident of Barboursville and has compiled an extensive history of “the Best Little Village

in West Virginia” in her book “The Lost Village of Barboursville.” The story of Barboursville begins in the

1770’s in an area of land where the Mud and Guyandotte Rivers meet. Land in this area was included in a

grant made by England’s King George III to John Savage and other Colonial soldiers for their service in the

French and Indian War. In the 1800’s, Jeremiah Ward purchased land in the future site of Guyandotte and set

up a salt mill. William Merritt purchased the future site of Barboursville and set up a grist mill, Merritt’s Mill.

Then in 1813 the town of Barboursville was created by an Act of the Virginia Legislature and named for

James Barbour, the Governor of Virginia. It was named the County Seat of the young Cabell County. In 1814,

the plan for the town of Barboursville, which is virtually unchanged to this day, was laid out by William

Buffington, County Surveyor.

News from around the West Virginia Kiwanis District

Kiwanis Club of Beckley: We've been busy, but not nearly as busy as Jane Laraba at SSHS. Her Key Club has

joined the "100 Babies Club," meaning they're saving 100 babies through KI's Eliminate Project. They've

hosted a successful car wash, have plans for a yard sale at the WV Soccer Office on May 17, and -- with help

from donations made by the Wilsons’, the Larabas’, and the McClures’ -- put together more than 20 personal

bags for children in need. Things have been happening Monroe County, too, where several of our members

participated May 5 in a charter dinner for a new Kiwanis Club.

On the home-front, our club has donated money for Boys' and Girls' State scholarships and designated mem-

bers to present English Awards. Traditionally, our club has hosted a luncheon for the top female and male

English students from each of our county high schools. This year, which happens to be the Sherman Covey-

Trail English Award's 50th year, we have decided to present those awards at the individual schools during

their senior awards nights. Those are as follows: May 8 at Liberty, May 12 at Shady, May 14 at Independ-

ence, and May 20 at Woodrow Wilson. We voted to give each student $50.

Another date you'll want to mark is May 29, 6 p.m., for a Key Club end-of-year dinner at Shady Spring High

School. We've all been invited! Our annual picnic will take place July 18 at Grandview Park. A performance

of "Hatfields & McCoys" is to follow. Details will come soon. Join us tomorrow, May 8, noon at Calacino's for

a regular meeting and for the presentation of our grant to the DNR's Children's Fishing Derby. We were re-

cently awarded a $250 grant from the WV Kiwanis Foundation, which we're matching to award the DNR's

program to get kids "Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs" at Little Beaver State Park in June. Mark Scott from

the DNR will be present to receive the $500, and a photo will be taken for the newspaper.

We've enjoyed some informative guest speakers recently, including Kacy Korczyk of on point acupuncture. If

you missed her discussion and would like to know more, you may contact Kacy at 304.890.8020. Dave La-

raba has taken on the challenge of exploring additional fundraising options. (This is in addition to his new

role as our club's Risk Management Coordinator.) Thanks, Dave! We'll be discussing ideas at tomorrow's

meeting and others. Bring your ideas! Funds are needed immediately to help worthy Key Clubbers attend

this summer's convention.

Oh, and we're thankful our Eliminate fund is gaining lots of Happy Dollars, many of them to celebrate Bill

May's recovery from heart surgery. Glad you're doing well, Bill! Thanks for your service! Audrey Stanton-

Smith Club Secretary

Kiwanis Club of Weirton: Weir Radio broadcast our annual fundraiser on 4/26. We raised $3,601. We were

on the radio for four hours and had a great time. Weirton Heights Elementary School awarded 42 students

with the Terrific Kid certificates etc. on 4/7. Five members had 48 hours of volunteering at their respective

churches: ie. Bible youth group, hung the stations of the cross, Trinity Church meeting for month, Greek

Church volunteering, and St. Anthony's volunteering. Plus there were nursing home visits and volunteering.

Kiwanis Club of Wellsburg: On our K-Family Event back on March 28th (Kiwanis One Day) we collected:

23 pairs of jeans (to make dog toys),

126 non-perishable items for the food pantry,

42 towels, blankets, toys & treats for animal shelter,

102 dog toys (jeans) for animal shelter,

newspapers for animal shelter,

77 Easter cards for nursing home,

14 cards for Veterans Hospital,

stamps for Veterans, and

“pop” tabs.

We also selected child in need to be honored this year to help pay his medical expenses.

Thanks to all members that helped make the event a success. Sean Jackson - K-Family Event Chair.

Kiwanis Club of Shepherdstown: Club members attended meetings of Key Club and K-Kids, supported KC with Spirit Night at Dominoes, and participated in Kiwanis One Day car wash with both clubs for the Elimi-nate Project, raising $294 for EliMiNaTe! We partnered with JHS Key Club to pick up 23 huge bags of litter along Route 480. This is the largest amount we have collected in several years. This has been a club project for more than 20 years! Many groups in our area raise funds for Relay for Life (American Cancer society). One of our members is very involved with her school team and we will make a donation to that team from our annual auction proceeds. Each year we raise funds for our projects by conducting a live and silent auc-tion of items donated by members, individuals, and businesses. Although it is a LOT of work, our efforts have paid off and we raised a record $4200+ this year! Two of our members traveled to Pittsburgh, PA, to partici-pate in The Formula training.

Kiwanis Club of Princeton-Athens: We made cupcakes for the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Key Club of Shady Springs HS: Shady Spring High School Key Club became a 100 Babies Club in April. In fact it was 124 babies by the end of the two week campaign. Kids want to do it again in September. Joint pro-ject with the Beckley Kiwanis -- made 25 personal hygiene bags for foster children. Often the children have to leave their home for a shelter or another home on very short notice. We prepared bags with: toothbrush & toothpaste, combs, shampoo, lotion, conditioner, mouthwash, razor, soap and wash cloth. Also provided bags to carry clothes (instead of the children having to use garbage bags to carry their items. And in the same effort, we collected diapers, baby wipes, baby shampoo, lotion, baby wash, diaper rash ointment, paci-fiers, teething rings for the children going to foster homes straight from the hospital. We are planning now to do this on a quarterly basis.

Kiwanis Club of Charles Town: The meeting was attended by the Key Club Officers from Washington HS and the new District L. Gov. for Key Club, Harry Neidig, as well. The 4th of July Fireworks was talked about and we will be working the ice cream tent for the event on the 5th of July from 2pm - 10pm. More infor-mation as well sign up sheet to come. This weekend is the Rummage Sale at the Charles Town Walgreens the time is 7:00 - 2:00, Please plan to be there when you can to help setup, help with the tables and tear down in the afternoon.

Ralph Lorrenzetti made a motion that we support the youth program at the Old Opera House again. Motion was approved, $1000 will be given to the program.

Kiwanis Club of Elkins: The club held their annual Spring Blood Analysis the first two Saturdays in May This is both a service project and a fundraising project. The Club made approximately $1550 at the Ramps and Rails Festival by selling Ramp Burgers and drinks. The club did casino games as part of the Elkins High School After Graduation Party.

Kiwanis Club of Welch: Welch Kiwanis Club assisted the McDowell County Chamber of Commerce with booths and a Cake Walk at the county fair. Members participated in the Memorial Day ceremony for our vet-erans. Wreaths and flags were placed at the memorial site and two cemeteries.

Kiwanis Club of Martinsburg: One Day Of Caring: Our Club has furnished a Pancake Breakfast for the Wash-ington Redskins Celebrity Breakfast for the Berkeley County Senior Center. This is a fundraiser for the center for the transportation dept. Ten members plus eight Key Club members from Hedgesville and Martinsburg High Schools helped. Three articles were in the local newspapers. Our club also furnishes orange juice, coffee, tea, and 18 dozen donuts to the children and adults who do the March of Dimes Walk-a-Thon. Seven members of our club plus seven Key Club members from Martinsburg High participated.

Twenty-three members collected items donated to the club for our two yard sales. Members traveled as far as 30 miles to gather items. One of the yard sales is at a member’s house that is on a 14 mile yard sale in the community. Country ham sandwiches along with hot dogs and sodas are sold also. Our club sold WV 3 digit Lotto tickets we had printed for the month of May. We sold the tickets for $5 each. We sold $3465 in tickets and paid out $1000 to the winners. bers donated 14 bags of food, 3 large dog beds, 4 blankets and $10 in cash. As a fundraiser, we provide six

workers each Thursday for the West Virginia Power baseball home games to sell refreshments. We keep the

tips as well as the pay the Power gives us to work.

Vandalia is held each Memorial Day weekend to celebrate West Virginia's Appalachian

heritage. We man a food booth, serving hot dogs, watermelon and beverages. This is

one of our club's fundraisers, netting about $4,900 this year. Pictured is member Bob

Claar serving the watermelon.

Pictured here are members Ted Streit, Sam Payne and Bill McDonald at the grill, ready to serve our grilled hot dogs at Vandalia.

ed, electronic and digital communication vehicles now commonly used by Kiwanis members. To provide greater flexibility in district operations, in agreement with proposed revisions to the Standard

Form for District Bylaws.

To ensure that every Kiwanis club in North America is protected from liability through affordable direc-tors and officers insurance coverage (D&O).

To establish stronger disciplinary provisions to help protect the entire Kiwanis organization and the youth we serve.

Proposed Administrative Resolution

Proposed by the Kiwanis International board:

To learn if clubs would like the Kiwanis International board to investigate replacing in-person voting with online voting for business normally conducted at the Kiwanis International convention: elections, amend-ments and resolutions.
