  • A few thoughts from our Director ...

If Charlie Brown went pro, he would have been a "Washington Senator.

"Damn Yankees" is based on "The Year the Yankees Lost ThePennant", which was published in 1954, and set in 1958. Ironically,1954 was the first year the Yankees hadn't won the pennant since1948. In 1955, when "Damn Yankees" premiered on Broadway, theYankees won the pennant but lost the World Series. In 1956, TheYankees started winning it all again. Yes, they won in 1958, too.

It is a rare musical that can satisfy not only the fan of musicalcomedy, the patron of more serious Faustian dramas, and also thenitpicking baseball fan whose spouse drags them to the theatre inthe weeks around Opening Day. I have long wanted to present aproduction of "Damn Yankees" that provides all three, and am happyyou are here to laugh with (or at), cheer for and perhaps have aheartstring or two tugged by our hapless Senators.

But the main reason that this lifelong Mets fan has enjoyed themonths of planning and weeks of rehearsals leading to this perfor-mance is because, especially after last October, I vehemently agreewith the performance's topic sentence. It is unfortunate to note thatGwen Verdon and RayWalston, who first brought Lola and Applegateto us on both stage and screen, both passed away since we startedworking on this production last year. We believe this is only a coin-cidence, and hope that they have a good view of our stage from upthere.

    Play ball!!

    -Doug Brook, Director

  • Did you know?• that "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant" was written in 1952, and

set its Senators' defeat of the Yankees in 1958. Interestingly, in 1955,the also rather hapless Brooklyn Dodgers actually defeated the Yankeesin the World Series, and the Milwaukee Braves did the same in 1957?

    • that there were no Major League teams in California, Texas, Canada, oranywhere west or south of St. Louis in the mid-1950's?

    • that the home run record was 60, set by Babe Ruth of the Yankees in1927. (Mark McGwire hit 70 for St. Louis in 1999 to break Roger Maris'"unbreakable" record of 61 in 1961)?

    • that Major League Baseball has been integrated since Jackie Robinsonsigned with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945?

    • that the Giants played in New Yorkthrough 1957 (theywere the Gothamsin the 1880's) and later moved to San Francisco?

    • that in the mid-1950's nobody currently playing for any Major LeagueBaseball team was born yet-not even Cal Ripken?
