BEAR LAKE After completing the
20-hour basic training course March 24and 25, the Bear Lake Township FireDepartments Community EmergencyResponse Team (CERT) is ready to becalled upon whenever the need arises.
Were trained to assist the profession-al first responders with things like perim-eter security and traffic control in times ofemergency, said Larry Gibson, who is thelocal CERT coordinator.
A group of 18 local citizens who willbe part of the CERT trained at Bear LakeSchool along with seven Wexford CountyCERT members. They learned what CERTis and how it functions, first aid, fire safe-ty, how to assist with search and rescueoperations andterrorism situations and disaster pre-paredness and disaster psychology.
Its important that CERT members
know how to work with disaster victimsand also how to psychologically handle
what they will be dealing with and seeing, said Gibson, who moved to Bear Lakeseveral years ago after retiring from theMadison Heights Police Department.

Township supervisor, said that even whenthe CERT members do simple tasks tohelp emergency responders they will beproviding essential additional manpower.
The CERT program is definitely a goodthing for Bear Lake and for the area, Bestsaid. With 10-year storms happeningmore often than that, CERT will be a valu-able asset. The more we discussed CERT,the more we thought weve got to do it.
Sgt. Bruce Payne, Michigan State PoliceCERT and Citizen Corps coordinator, wasin Bear Lake to assist with the training.
One thing we have learned during adisaster or an emergency, no matter whatthe hazard is, that we have to rely upon thecommunity, Payne said. Thats why thisCERT training is so important. One thing
we learned from Sept. 11 or HurricaneKatrina is that the system is going to beso taxed that it will not have the ability torespond to each 9-1-1 call.
Thats why this training is so impor-tant, Payne continued, because we givethe citizens basic training on how to getthemselves prepared, how to keep them-selves safe, how to take care of their com-munities, and thats what the CERT pro-gram is all about, keeping people safe andkeeping their communities safe.
Gibson pointed out that the CERTteam is available for situations throughout
the area as a deployable asset of the Bear
Lake Township Fire Department. Fiveindividuals were previously trained for theprogram, and they helped during the early
March snowstorm that brought down trees
and power lines.According to Gibson, CERT is a part of
the Citizens Corps, which is a nationwideFederal Emergency Management Agencyprogram whose motto is Uniting commu-nities; preparing the nation.
We would have been happy with eightto 10 students, but its really nice to be fullat 25, Gibson said. Its good to train with
Wexford, because there could be things
coming up that we work on together.Gibson noted that there will be a train-
ing session in several months when BearLakes seasonal residents have returned totheir summer homes.
The community has been great,Gibson said. Weve received a lot of sup-port for the program. People have said they
would like to help the fire department, and
this is a great way to do that.

Just after noon on March 24 half of the CERT trainees were at the front door ofBear Lake School getting a lesson on fire safety.
Part of CERT training involves learninghow to help disaster victims.

To compete in the worldeconomy, U.S. businesses
will need millions of newcollege graduates for thenext decades new jobs. Can todays colleges anduniversities develop future
workers with the skills theywill need for tomorrows
obs?A new book by Dr.
Tracey Wilen-Daugenti,Society 3.0: How
Technology Is ReshapingEducation, Work and
Society, details how col-leges and universities arestill evolving ways to pro-
vide the workforce skillsthat companies will mostneed to innovate and growin the 21st century.
Traditional class-room learning no longermatches the way todaysstudents learn and com-plete coursework, says Dr.
Wilen-Daugenti, a formerSilicon Valley executive
who is the vice presidentand managing director of
Apollo Research Institute.Major societal trends, such
as degree acquisition later
in life, social mobility andgreater need for intercul-tural awareness, will dic-tate the content and deliv-ery of higher education.
Yet many colleges anduniversities struggle tokeep pace with these trendsand enrollment rates overthe past decade have beenstagnant. As one solution,Dr. Wilen-Daugenti pro-poses greater use of dis-tance learning programs,
where online courseworkand class participation sup-plement or replace face-to-face learning. Distance
learning helps brick-and-
mortar universities addlearning capacity whileallowing working studentsto take courses on theirown schedule, she says.
Producing millions ofnew graduates will requiremultiple stakeholders forsuccess. Individuals must
become lifelong learners tokeep their skill sets current
with marketplace demandsacross longer careers, says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti.Educational institutionsneed to keep pace withtechnological and socialdevelopments in the skills
they promote, the way they
deliver instruction andthe range of students theyserve.
According to Dr. Wilen-Daugenti, businesses mustadapt their workforceplanning and developmentstrategies and collaborate
with higher educationinstitutions to ensure thatfuture skill requirementsare aligned with relevantcurricula and instructionaldelivery systems. Likewise, she says, the federal gov-ernment must make educa-tion a national priority, toprovide citizens with the
skills most suited to build-
ing a sustainable future. The future of higher
education is tied to inno-vation, technology andan adaptive knowledge ofsocietys emerging trends, says Dr. Wilen-Daugentiof the teamwork neededto produce tomorrowsresilient, skilled workforce. The importance of educa-tion to career longevityand success has never beengreater.

When looking for a job,you need to do more thanbrush off your rsum andbuy an interview suit. Goodlistening skills are crucial
for any employee. Seventy-three percent of employerssurveyed by ACT, a leadingcollege and workforce plan-ning organization, rankedlistening among extremelyimportant job skills. If yousuffer from any hearing
loss, the most importantinvestment you may wantto make is improving yourcommunication skills.
People with hear-ing loss find it difficult toget and keep a job, saidChicago-based ear, noseand throat doctor SreekantCherukuri.
Whether because of
ignorance, uncertainty, fear or malice, employersare often unwilling tohire people with hearingissues. Even failing to hearthe occasional word ona job interview can leadthe interviewer to thinka potential hire is not upto the job. Many times, employers dont even real-ize that potential hires havehearing loss. Rather, even
slight hearing impairmentcan result in a candidateappearing uncommunica-tive, unfriendly or evenunintelligent.
While it is illegal todiscriminate against people
with hearing issues, thereality is that such discrim-ination happens.
Its also true that those
who are employed may findit difficult to get promoted
because of their impair-ment. The Better HearingInstitute confirmed thenegative impact of hearingloss on job performance.People with untreated hear-ing loss lose as much as$30,000 annually depend-ing on their degree of

hearing loss.Few jobs provide accom-
modations to compensatefor hearing loss, and in
a difficult job market, employers see people whoare ready to do the job as a
better bet.While its estimated that
36 million people in theU.S. need hearing aids, over77 percent (28 million) are
walking around withoutthem. The Deaf and Hardof Hearing Association esti-mates that only one in fivepeople who needs a hearingaid wears one.
One reason many peopledont get the help they
need is the cost of hearingaids. Thats why Cherukuridecided to develop anaffordable hearing aid (TheMDHearingAid).
Many consumer elec-tronics items, such assmartphones, digital cam-eras and DVD players, costless than $200, but the costof a hearing aid (a muchsimpler device) can beprohibitive. Medicare andmost insurance plans donot cover hearing aids andthe average out-of-pocketcost is between $1,500 and
$3,000 per ear. For one ofthe most prevalent chronichealth conditions reported
by older adults, hearing
aids are an unaffordableluxury for many.
The components ofa hearing aid are not any
more expensive than aniPhone and a hearing aidcant do what an iPhonedoes, but a hearing aidcosts so much more, saidCherukuri.
He was sure he couldbuild a medical-grade hear-ing aid that was reasonablypriced and effective forthe most common typesof hearing loss and he
was right, as his customers, such as nurses, teachersand truckers, have told himhow important this invest-
ment has been for theircareers. The MDHearingAid he
invented costs less than$200 per ear and providesa viable option to patients
who cannot afford the highprice of custom hearingaids. Thats a price rangethat many more peoplecan afford to invest in theiremployment future.

Its time to check around thehouse to make sure things are oper-ating efficiently. Here are 10 often-overlooked tasks to add to yourhome-cleaning list:
1. Check AC: Have your air-conditioning system tuned up tolower energy bills and ensure the sys-tem is running at its manufacturer-rated efficiency.
2. Check Water Heater: If yourwater heater is more than five yearsold, check it for signs of leakage orrusting at the bottom.
3. Fertilize Lawn: Apply a high-
nitrogen fertilizer once in the springand again in the fall.4. Check Refrigerator: Clean
the refrigerators condenser coil witha long-handled bottle brush and a
vacuum cleaner with an attachmenthose to remove dust and lint thatcould shut down the unit by causing
it to overheat.5. Clean Gutters: Clean the
gutters so the rainwater flows easilyoff the roof. Clearing leaves prevents
water from pooling in areas andattracting mosquitoes.
6. Organize Closets: Wash ordry-clean clothes before storing themin a zippered sweater or blanket bagor in a plastic bin.
7. Clean Carpets: Vacuumcarpets and shampoo with a sprayfoam or powder, or rent a steamerfrom the hardware store for a deeperclean.
8. Wash Exterior Windows:Pick a cloudy day to wash exterior
windows. Too much sun dries the
cleaning solution too quickly and cre-ates streaks.9. File Important Documents:
Store warranties, operating manualsand other documents in hanging files, folders or binders for easy access.
10. Check Batteries: The averagehome is filled with battery-oper-
ated devices from flashlights tosmoke detectors to cordless phones.
Dont forget to test those devices andreplace the batteries with fresh ones.
Test smoke alarms once permonth and change the batteries atleast twice per year. Ensure there isat least one working smoke alarm onevery level of your home, particularlyin or near sleeping areas.
According to the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission, about3,000 people in the U.S. lose theirlives in residential fires every year. Its time to replace the batteries if thedetector emits a warning sound, suchas chirping or beeping.

NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE
Nearly everyone hasa reusable grocery tote,
ut only 15 percent ofAmericans regularly cleantheir eco-friendly bags and that could create a
reeding zone for harmful
acteria.According to the Home
Food Safety program, acollaboration betweenthe Academy of Nutritionand Dietetics (formerlythe American DieteticAssociation) and ConAgraFoods, its a smart idea toclean totes on a regular
asis.Using unwashed gro-
ery totes can cause cross-ontamination when juicesrom raw meats or germsrom unclean objects come
n contact with cookedr ready-to-eat foods likereads or produce, saysegistered dietitian andcademy spokespersonuth Frechman.
Food poisoning affects8 million Americans aear, but it can be preventedith practical steps, such as
leaning grocery totes andeparating raw meats fromeady-to-eat foods whenhopping, cooking, serv-ng and storing foods, shedded.
Frechman says to makeure all bacteria are elimi-ated by frequently washing
your grocery tote, eitherin the washing machine or
by hand with hot, soapywater; cleaning all areaswhere you place your totes, such as the kitchen counter;storing totes in a clean, drylocation; and avoiding leav-ing totes in the trunk of a
vehicle.In the store, wrap meat,
poultry and fish in plasticbags before placing in thetote and use two differenttotes for raw meats andready-to-eat foods, saysFrechman.
She also stresses it is asmart idea to use two cut-ting boards at home: onestrictly to cut raw meat, poultry and seafood; theother for ready-to-eat foods, like breads and vegetables.
Keep cutting boardsseparate, and wash them
thoroughly in hot, soapywater after each use orplace in the dishwasher, she says. Discard any oldcutting boards that havecracks, crevices and exces-sive knife scars.
Cross-contamination alsohappens in your refrigerator
when you place raw meatson the top shelf and juicesdrip onto produce, saysFrechman. An easy solutionis placing raw meats, poultryand seafood on the bottomshelf and keeping washedproduce in clean storagecontainers instead of originalpackaging.
Wash your grocery totes to minimize health risks
