By: Aleia HaithChris Baker, a West Sacramento native

and long-time Raider, was named the head coach of River City High School’s varsity foot-ball team last week.Coach Baker started coaching football in

1974 and started coaching for the Washing-ton Unified School District in 1976, making this his 40th season in West Sacramento. This will be Baker’s third tenure as head

football coach, although he retired as a teacher at River City three years ago, he has been an assistant coach and on the sidelines throughout his entire career. “I’ve always been involved in one level or

the other of either Junior or Varsity, so it’s not like I’ve gone anywhere, it’s just that I’ve just changed the official title. So I never left,” said Baker. He is taking over a team that went 2-8 the

previous season with many of those losses being lopsided blow outs. Since he has been involved in the program and knows many of the players already, he has a solid under-standing of what needs to be done to make the team successful.“I think I’m up to speed on our strengths and

weaknesses and what we need to do to get bet-ter and where we are in the pecking order and the teams we compete with,” said Baker. Part of his plan to restore Raider Pride in

the football program includes bringing back alumni and influential community members to connect the present and the proud past. “…we want to select noteworthy people who

have contributed [to West] Sacramento and spe-cifically this school and honor them,” said Baker. Not only is this a big year for Coach Baker as he

prepares for the challenge of being head coach, but this is also a big year for his son, RCHS Se-nior Gabriel Baker. Gabriel had the opportuni-ty of playing football here while his father was the assistant coach and has been immersed in RCHS football since he was a child, so he’s fa-miliar with his father’s coaching style and what he believes his father will bring to the program.“His enthusiasm is not only explosive but

contagious to his staff as well as his players,” said Gabriel, “He pours his heart and soul into this program to give the kids the great-est chance possible to succeed.”Gabriel said he was beyond excited for his

father’s returning role as head coach and that he won’t be coaching alone. ”This time he is supposed [to coach] with another local legend Coach DePrato as offensive coordina-tor to lessen the stress load.”The Raiders will have their work cut out for

them in their first game next season against Liberty Ranch High School, a strong team from Galt that is returning several skilled athletes from last year’s team. Regardless of the competi-tion River City has already started their off-sea-son conditioning program and is getting ready to represent the community of West Sacramento.“I grew up here, it’s my home,” said Coach

Baker, “I have a ton of energy, I’m a competitor, I love to win and I hate to lose. River City High School is the best place for me to be and I think that makes it good for our kids and our players.

West Sacramento has been named one of eight winners in the national LRNG City Challenge, which will award a $30,000 grant to West Sac-ramento’s FutureReady Program. The winners were announced Thurs-day at SXSWedu in Austin by LRNG CEO Connie Yowell who announced a major expansion of the LRNG Cit-ies movement.LRNG is a new, youth-centric move-

ment focused on turning learning into a lifestyle. With LRNG, young people can pur-

into the network of LRNG cities is representative of how committed we are as a city to prepare our youth for success in college and career,” said

FutureReady executive director Ian Winbrock. “FutureReady will be le-veraging these resources to enhance existing efforts with the school dis-trict, employers and the city.”West Sacramento joins a nation-

dle the chartering of new leagues. By then, baseball had become so popular in West Sacramento that it was decided a second league was needed. D6 chartered its first league, and Washington Little League was born in the Broderick/Bryte area. Now, 60 years later, little

league is still going strong in West Sacramento. It is still a common sight to go into businesses and see a team photo hanging on their wall to show the support that they have given our kids. The town has grown a lot

in 60 years, but the orig-inal little league bound-aries within our town have remained the same. Washington Little League sits between the river and the freeway, leaving no room for expansion and creating a land-lock for that league. Many of the families within these boundaries are estab-lished, and still remain in their homes. This is a wonderful thing. However, the children

from that area of the com-munity have now grown, and moved on to live their own lives with children of their own. There are of course still children on the north side of town, so though Washington Little League was small, it still managed to stay afloat. All rule changes are

made in Williamsport, and apply to all chartered little leagues. In 2014, the boundary rules changed. It would now be allowed to play little league in the area of where the child goes to school. When the new boundary rule was put into play, many chil-dren from Washington Little League moved over to West Sac Little League. There are more kids, more games, more variety. What’s not to love? With the numbers of players

dwindling on the Wash-ington side, it seems the league can no longer sus-tain itself. Washington Little League President, Teresa Blackmere stated, “It’s sad really. We’ve held on as long as we could, but the simple truth is we just don’t have the kids.” In 2015, Washing-ton Little League had 75 registrants, allowing for only one junior and major teams, two Minor teams and four Tball teams. However, do not fear.

Baseball is still booming in West Sacramento. West Sac Little League is grow-ing bigger and stronger by the year. In 2015, West Sac Little

League had 660 kids reg-istered to play ball. West Sac’s President, Ron Yar-brough stated that “the merger between the two leagues in West Sacra-mento is not official yet, but it will be by next year. So, for this year, any kids that wanted to sign up, we did it by waiver.” When asked if they were al-ready utilizing the fields in the Washington area, he stated “Oh yeah, with this many kids, we use the fields all around town. However, we have put money into improvements and repairs on those fields, and we just invest-ed $45,000 to improve the fields at Memorial Park. You really should come and see them. They are beautiful. Major league quality.” Opening Day is March

19th at Memorial Park. So, this spring, if you find yourself looking for a fun day, and something to do – head on over to one of the ball parks and catch a game. Support the kids, share in the excitement, and have a good time! Remember that everybody out there is a volunteer, so please be supportive.

Public Input Sought on Clerk-Recorder/Asses-sor/Registrar of VotersWith the retirement of Yolo County Clerk-Re-corder//Assessor/Regis-trar of Voters Freddie Oakley, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors has embarked on a process to appoint a successor to complete the remainder of the term ending Jan. 8, 2019. While statute does not allow the board to call for a mid-term election, they have an interest in obtaining public input on the skills and qualities necessary to carry out the duties of the office. Yolo County residents can pro-vide feedback by either: 1) attending the Jan. 12 Board of Supervisors meeting, held at 9 a.m. in Board Chambers, Room 206 of the Erwin Meier Administration Building at 625 Court St. in Wood-land; or 2) by completing the survey found on www.yolocounty.org by Jan. 22.
