All students have displayed our school values and are being safe and respectful learners every day. P&C Disco My very special thanks to the school P&C for organising our recent disco. It really was a great night for all the students who attended. We had a DJ who kept the music coming, lots of food and drinks and even Glow Sticks! We are indeed very fortunate to have such a committed, organised and efficient P&C to organise such wonderful events. Thanks also must go to the teachers who gave up their night to help with the supervision. Note: Events like the Disco require a huge amount of organisation in advance. Therefore, I must request again, that parents return notes and money for these types of events and excursions, on time. If you are having difficulty for any reason, please contact the school office so we can make an arrangement to have your child’s name included on the list. Our goal is to have 100% participation. Gala Days Once again, I am proud to say that Lurnea Public School students have represented themselves and the school with pride during the Term 4 Gala Days. We have had mixed results, but most importantly, the students had fun. Also, it was great to see lots of parents and carers come to the venues to cheer on our teams. Unfortunately in 2011, we will have to reduce the number of teams we have representation at due to our declining numbers of students and staff. However, we will let students know well in advance which sports will be represented by allowing the students to vote. We will keep you informed of the results early in 2011. LURNEA PUBLIC SCHOOL TERM 4 2010

This year there will be two separate presentation day assemblies, one for Years 3 – 6 and one for K – 2. This will enable parents to be seated inside the hall with their children and celebrate the achievements our students have made this year.

The Presentation Day Assemblies will be on

Monday 13 December in the hall. The Year 3 - 6 Assembly will start at 9.30am and finish at 11am. The K – Year 2 Assembly will start at 11.30pm and finish at 12.30pm.

Parents and family members are warmly invited to attend both assemblies. The P&C will be selling tea and coffee under the hall COLA area between the assemblies.

Head Lice It’s the time of year again to begin checking your children’s hair for head lice (nits). Once again, we are seeking to arrange a NitBusters program similar to the one we implemented late last year. In the meantime, I have included some information about detection and treatment of head lice on our website. Please take a few minutes to read the information and check your children regularly. If we all work together, nits won’t be a problem at Lurnea. End of Term Class teachers a currently putting the finishing touches to the final academic reports for the year. I have been reading lots of them this week and I am pleased to report that many of our students have achieved some excellent results. I encourage you to read these reports carefully when they come home towards the end of the term. If you have any questions or comments, please make an appointment with the class teacher to review the report in more detail. Finally, a reminder that the last day of school for all students is Wednesday 15 December 2010. The last 2 days of Term 4 are Staff Development Days. Have a great week. David Sim Principal (A)

LURNEA PUBLIC SCHOOL TERM 4 2010

Healthy Lunch Box Ideas Making an interesting and nutritious packed lunch every day for your child can be a difficult task. But don’t resort to pre-prepared lunchbox foods, sweets and crisps!

Packing a healthy lunch for your child is vital to make sure they get the right energy and nutrients they need for lunchtime play and afternoon lessons.

One of the difficulties with the daily task of making a packed lunch can be finding the inspiration about how to offer variety whilst still keeping it healthy.

Top tips for a healthy lunch box

• Always include fresh fruit and vegetables. Vary the selection to keep it interesting.

• Offer a variety of whole grain breads, rolls, pita bread and flat breads.

• Use avocado as a spread instead of butter or margarine.

• Use reduced fat dairy foods. Cheese and yoghurt are ideal.

• Kids need a serve of protein at lunchtime. Ensure you include lean meat, egg, peanut butter, chickpeas or tuna.

• Add a chilled bottle of water and limit juice.

Involve the kids:

School-age kids can learn some cooking basics and use their math skills as they help combine ingredients for recipes. You also can use the time to talk about good nutrition and why you chose the ingredients you're using. It can lay the groundwork for healthy eating later on.

Our website has some good healthy eating ideas for lunch boxes.

Banana Muffins Ingredients * 2 eggs, beaten shopping list * 3 very ripe bananas, mashed shopping list * 2 cups all-purpose flour shopping list * 3/4 cup white sugar * 1 teaspoon salt

* 1 teaspoon baking soda

* Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease or line 10 muffin cups. * In a medium bowl, mash bananas well. * Combine eggs and bananas. * In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, sugar and baking soda. * Stir banana mixture into flour mixture. * Pour batter into prepared muffin cups. * Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into center of a muffin comes out clean. Enjoy!

P&C News

Christmas Raffle Disco

The P&C would like to thank the students in attendance for their great behaviour and the teachers & volunteers for making the night a wonderful success.

Meeting Our next meeting will be on: Monday 6th December, 6pm in the staffroom.

Positive Behaviour At Lurnea This semester has been a positive time at Lurnea Public School. Students have been working hard to follow our school rules of Be a Learner, Be Safe, Be Respectful. It has been very pleasing to see the number of students achieving Bronze and Silver Awards at the Infant and Primary Assemblies. We hope to hand out a record number of Gold Medallions at the Presentation Day Assemblies this year. Our new playground layout and zones have had a positive impact on student behaviour, with children engaging in active and respectful play with each other.
