Denny Cline may not carry the official title of Gremlins ten- nis head coach — even though he’s outlasted three of them dur- ing the program’s four-year exis- tence — or be credited to bringing tennis to Sacred Heart. The final decision was OK’d by principal Mark Register, but don’t be mistaken about who the heartbeat of the young program is. The 49-year-old Sedalia na- tive, whose day job is warehouse receiving group leader at Gard- ner Denver, eats, drinks and lives tennis in the spring, serving as volunteer assistant coach for the Gremlins tennis team. But before delving into Cline’s influence on a program that has finished a collective 16- 5 the last two seasons, advanced to regional play in 2010 and had a state qualifier in two of its three campaigns, his devotion to the sport must first be under- stood. And for that he can thank his son, former all-state tennis star Alex. Before the birth of Alex — a 2010 graduate of Sacred Heart School and now a collegiate player at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy — Cline knew little to nothing about the game. Cline never touched a tennis racket growing up. Instead, his athletic prowess was confined to the hardwood at Smith-Cotton High School, where he started as guard under Willie Jenkins until graduating in 1980. “Basketball is what I played — loved it,” said Cline. “I never even thought about tennis grow- ing up.” At least until Alex became enamored with the sport in the late 1990s as a 7-year-old bud- ding talent. “My background in tennis? None,” Cline said. “I recognized Alex wanted to play tennis and picked up the racket with him. I learned with him.” “Alex became a (United States Tennis Association) kid, started playing around 7 or so with the (Sedalia) parks and rec and coach (Steve) Schilb and Rod Davis during the summers. Then Tom Cunningham and me started working with him.” So what gave Cline the au- thority or experience to help teach his son tennis, a game he new little about for the first four decades of his life? “We took Alex for what I want to say two to three months to Woodside Academy in Kansas City for professional lessons, and I just watched that guy who was teaching Alex the proper way to serve, the ins and outs of the backhand and forehand, and I saw how he handled the kids and talked to them. I just kind of brought that back to Sedalia.” While Alex flourished on the USTA junior circuit, his future in tennis hit a snag as he entered Sacred Heart, which, like every other school in the Kaysinger Conference, didn’t offer tennis. “We had contemplated at one time going to Smith-Cotton be- cause Alex swam for Joe Arbisi through the Bandits, and he was a top-notch swimmer, so he could have done both swimming and tennis,” Cline said. “We chose to stay, however, because of the academics and more of a one-on-one type deal at Sacred Heart, which we felt had better studies.” But that doesn’t mean Cline was resigned to let his son’s tal- ents on the tennis court go to waste without a fight. “Let’s go back at least five and a half years, about a year and a half before the team came about,” Cline said. “I was on the school board and we wanted to bring some new sports at the time. We brought up swimming and tennis, but we talked and we thought this isn’t going to hap- pen. But Mark Register ap- proached us one day and said, ‘You know what, I think we’re going to get this tennis team going.’ That really surprised us.” In their first year, the Grem- lins posted a winning record, and a lot of that success can be at- tributed to Cline who, because only a Sacred Heart teacher could assume the head coaching role, had the task of working with multiple players who had never before held a racket. “It was natural that I step in to help,” Cline said. “My role from day one has been to basi- cally to work with the kids, teach them the fundamentals and get them prepared for match play while the head coach is there to run the ins and outs of what it takes with scheduling, communicating with other coaches and the behind-the- scenes stuff.” It’s been an everyday com- mitment for Cline, who has pro- vided stability for a program that’s had three coaches in four years. Register understands that it’s because of Cline’s dedication that the program has been able to thrive. “We really couldn’t have done this without Denny,” he said. “While we’ve had some great folks help the program and take over head coaching duties, Denny’s been here from the be- ginning and has lent all the ex- pertise to it. ... He’s been a great asset and him continuing with the program speaks volumes about his character.” With Alex graduating two years ago, Cline could have been like most parents in taking a less hands-on approach and support- ing the program from afar. But Cline’s involvement is about continuing a tradition he’s held close to his heart since the inau- gural team stepped on the tennis courts in March 2009. “It’s too much fun — love to do it,” Cline said. So how long does he expect to stay on as assistant coach? “As long as they’ll have me, I’ll be there,” Cline said. “Just going around the kids, when they see me they’ll say, ‘Are you going to coach this year, coach Cline? Are you going to coach this year, coach Cline?’ So it’s kind of like, how can you say no?” By Seth Stringer Sydney Brink/Democrat Volunteer Denny Cline works with Sacred Heart senior Sean Ki on his volleys near the net during a practice Thursday at Liberty Park. I have no idea how many hats I’ve ownedover the years, but it’s well over 100.

Out of this constantly changing sea ofheadgear, four have gained immortality. Theyare what one of my first writing mentorscalled “vault hats,” because what they repre-sent is worth preserving and protecting.

By far the most precious of my vault hatsis a navy blue-billed cap with a bright yellowpatch sewn onto the front of its crown, bearingthe logo, “CBS Sports.” It belonged to my dadwho, while not directly affiliated with CBSsports, was the first engineer hired by KTVH,CBS’s pioneer station in central Kansas.

That cap was the most completely luck-saturated fisherman’s talisman I’ve ever seen.Limit catches followed it wherever it went, and, more often than not, it emitted enoughgood fortune to cover me as well.

The CBS Sports cap reached its zenith onan August day in 1996, when Dad and Icaught a boat limit of Truman Lake crappiefrom a single treetop.

Buoyed by his lucky cap, Dad was as goodat hauling in big fish as he was at snaring lim-its.

I took him to Ben’s Black Bear Camp, located north of Dinorwic, Ontario, in May1990. At an annual fish fry held in Pleas-antville, Iowa, the following March, campowner Ben Harvey presented caps bearing thelogo, “I caught the big one at Ben’s BlackBear Camp” to the guests who landed thebiggest fish each week.

Dad needed less than 10 minutes to win itthe week we were there with a huge northernpike he caught when I paused in a featurelessbay so he could practice casting. That cap hasa place in my vault.

Ben’s Black Bear Camp produced a vaulthat for me, too. I spent the evenings of our1990 trip hunting black bears with what, toput a positive spin on it, was a perfect lack ofsuccess.

Then on the way to the back country lakewe intended to fish the last morning of ourstay, we spotted an impressively large bearfeeding on clover along the edge of the two-rut access road. He was back again on ourway back out.

Dad, who was normally a stickler for keep-ing to prearranged schedules, suggested Imake a try for the bear, despite the fact thatour departure would be delayed if I got him.

Less than 10 minutes after I’d taken a positionhalfway up a rocky outcropping, the bearappeared walking parallel to the trail butdownslope from it enough that only the tophalf of his back showed.

When I fired, the bear flipped completelyover and slid out of sight down the slope. Irushed back to camp to announce my victoryand to get help hauling my trophy out of theswamp into which its body had disappeared.

Half an hour of increasingly frantic search-ing failed to turn up any trace of the bear. Afriend of mine and I decided to try to recon-struct the shot and its possible consequences. We concluded that my bullet had passed overthe top of the bear’s back almost close enoughto cut hair. Startled, the bear had slipped andfallen on the steep slope, leading me to thelogical conclusion I’d delivered a mortal blow.

At the following March’s fish fry, after allof the caps had been distributed, I was calledto the stage. With a flourish and an overlycomplete explanation, Ben presented me a capwhich announced, “I shot AT my bear atBen’s Black Bear Camp.”

The fourth vault hat, a bright blue-billedcap with “National Action Pistol Champi-onship 1989 Bianchi Cup” printed on a graybackground, is a memento of one of my mostego-enhancing accomplishments.

A number of gun writers, a few generalinterest reporters and I had arrived at the rangewhere the Bianchi Cup matches would beshot the next day. By midafternoon, the rangemaster offered to set up a slightly abbreviatedversion of the competition course for us toshoot.

So there I was, standing on the firing lineflanked by men who specialized in writingabout guns and who shot virtually every day.I’m reasonably proficient with a handgun, but,in the real world, there was no way this wasgoing to be pretty.

But when the smoke cleared, I was stand-ing alone on top of the heap. I couldn’t havedone it again if they would have run thecourse 50 more times, but I didn’t have to.

I accepted the cap that was the winner-take-all crown for being top gun among theoutdoor press and tried to keep my jaw fromdropping open.

‘Vault hats’ preserve outdoor memories

Make the First Five Years Count:What Parents Should Know

(NAPS)—The first five years of life are the years of learning that shape kids’futures. Yet every year, more than 1 million children with unidentified delays anddisabilities enter school with learning and health issues that put them far behind theirpeers.

According to the National Survey of Children’s Health, one in five householdswith children has a child with a spe-cial health care need and could bene-fit from screening and services, yetless than 20 percent of children underthe age of 5 receive a developmentalscreening.

While every child develops at hisor her own pace, there are some mile-stones parents should be aware of.Easter Seals, through the generoussupport of the CVS CaremarkCharitable Trust, offers parents freeaccess to an online screening tool tohelp parents monitor their child’sdevelopmental milestones. Widelyused with parents by health care providers, preschool programs and early childhoodprofessionals, Brookes Publishing’s Ages & Stages Questionnaires® can now be eas-ily completed by parents at www.MakeTheFirstFiveCount.org.

Here are a few of the milestones included in the screening tool:Birth to 1 year

• At 2 months, does your baby smile when you talk to her? Does your baby rollfrom his back to his tummy at 8 months?

• When holding a small toy in each hand, does your baby clap the toys together(like ‘Pat-a-cake’) at 12 months?

1 to 2 years• At 14 months, does your baby take several steps without tripping or falling?• Does your child help turn the pages of a book at 16 months?• When you ask your child to point to her nose, eyes, hair, feet, ears and so forth,

does she correctly point to at least seven body parts?2 to 3 years

• Does your child run fairly well, stopping herself without bumping into thingsor falling? Does your child put on a coat, jacket or shirt by himself?

• When drawing, does your child hold a pencil, crayon or pen between her fin-gers and thumb like an adult does?

3 to 4 years• Can your child cut paper with child-safe scissors? If you place five objects in

front of your child, can he count them by saying, “one, two, three, four, five,” inorder?

4 to 5 years• Does your child use four- and five-word sentences?• Does your child usually take turns and share with other children? If something doesn’t feel quite right, share your concerns with your health care

provider. Early identification and treatment are keys to a bright future for your child.Contact your advertising representative if you would like to have

your business featured in this space.

Is your child at risk? Use an online screen-ing tool at MakeTheFirstFiveCount.org tofind out.

Q: My friends and I watched theWladimir Klitschko heavyweight-title bout against Jena-MarcMormeck at our local bar, andwere happy to see Wladimir retainhis heavyweight title. One of myfriends said he heard thatWladimir intends to start up anacting career when he's done withboxing. Is that true? -- John R., In-dianapolis

A: While it's true that the hand-some Ukrainian has dipped his footin the Hollywood pool -- the docu-mentary "Klitschko," which centerson his and his older brother Vitali'srise in the boxing world, has beenmaking quite an impression on festi-val goers since premiering at theTribeca Film Festival last year --Wladimir is keeping his eye firmlyon his boxing career.

I spoke with him recently aboutthe acting rumors, and he told me:"While I am asked often about beingin movies -- usually it's a Russianmob character -- it's always the samething. I did play myself in 'Ocean'sEleven,' and I did two German come-dies. But right now I'm playing therole called the Heavyweight Cham-pion of the World, and it takes all ofmy time. I really like to play it, and Ihave to stay focused. So there's nononsense with any wannabe Holly-wood stuff. If I lose my focus, thenI'm going to lose the titles, and I don'twant to do that."

You can watch Wladimir defendhis title July 7 against Tony Thomp-son, and read my entire engaging in-terview with the charmingheavyweight at www.celebrityex-traonline.com.

***Q: I am so excited to see "The

Avengers," starring all of my fa-vorite comic-book heroes, espe-cially Captain America. Because of"The Avengers," does that meanthere won't be a "Captain Amer-

ica: The First Avenger" sequel fora while? -- Fred D., via e-mail

A: Walt Disney Studios recentlyannounced that Chris Evans willagain suit up in red, white and blue tosave the world from the bad guys. You can expect the sequel to lastsummer's blockbuster hit to arrive intheaters April 4, 2014. While it's stilltoo early to camp out for tickets, atleast there's a release date in sight.

***Q: I'm really sad about this

being the final season of "Desper-ate Housewives." How are theladies of Wisteria Lane taking it? --J.J.

A: If one of Marcia Cross' latesttweets is any indication, they are assad as you are. Marcia recentlylamented via Twitter: "How do youhandle goodbyes? Me, not so well ...already feel so sad and vulnerable ...[I] will miss my 'Desperate House-wives' family terribly."

***Readers: Here's an update on re-

lease dates of various HBO projectsthat have been mentioned in pastcolumns. First, season five "TrueBlood" premieres on June 10 at 9p.m. with 12 all-new episodes. Also,"Newsroom" -- the Aaron Sorkindrama starring Jeff Daniels, EmilyMortimer and Sam Waterson -- pre-mieres its 10-episode first season onJune 24 at 10 p.m.
