PUbLIShER’S LETTER: Mother’s Day has passed and I hope you took the chance on that wonderful day, as you should do every day, to let your Mother or Mother figure know how special she is to you. Now, equally important, Father’s Day is approaching. Again, no need to wait for just that one special day to express to your Father or Father figure, how very important he is to you. Try something just from your heart, like a poem or a card made from scratch. I know those are things that children do a lot, however, it still works as a grown up child. :)

What Makes a DadGod took the strength

of a mountain, The majesty of a tree,

The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night,

The wisdom of the ages,

The power of the eagle’s flight,The joy of a morning in spring,

The faith of a mustard seed,The patience of eternity,

The depth of a family need,Then God combined

these qualities,When there was nothing

more to add,He knew His masterpiece

was complete,And so,

He called it … Dad

Father’s Day Quotes

Mark Twain - When I was a boy of fourteen,

my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old

man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in

seven years.

Mario Cuomo -I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands

work fifteen and sixteen hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottoms of his

feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to

speak the language, who taught me all I needed to know about

faith and hard work by the simple eloquence of his example.

Bill Cosby -If the new american father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the

fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right.

Eric Clapton -Up until I became a father,

it was all about self-obsession. But then I learned exactly what

it’s all about: the delight of being a servant. v

ew tampa Pediatric dental began serving children in the New tampa and Pasco

County areas just about one year ago; however, the practice has been serving children since 2006. the owner, dr. Francisco Bezerra, or, “dr. B,” as he is more commonly known by patients and parents, carried over the care for patients in the office previously provided by pediatric dentist, dr. anna seo. dr. Bezerra, originally from Brazil , and fluent in english, spanish, and Portuguese, prides himself in providing dental visits that are fun and educational for both the parents and the children. Graduation from the UCLa school of dentistry in June of 2005 was followed shortly thereafter by dr. Bezerra’s acceptance into Nova southeastern University’s College of dentistry in order to attain his Pediatric specialty degree, which he graduated with in June of 2007. Immediately after graduating as a pediatric dentist, dr. Bezerra worked for one of the largest, most prestigious pediatric dental groups in arizona for three years. Becoming a pediatric dentist was what dr. Bezerra had dreamed of since his third year at UCLa when he attended a six month dental program

where he worked with children. dr. Bezerra has a genuine, innate love for children, since he grew up with nine brothers and sisters, and then started a family of his own, with his wife Lilyan. Interacting with parents and offering his professional knowledge for their questions and concerns

is a common contribution by dr. Bezerra, as preventive dental care for children requires the parents to be well informed about essential diet and home care. since fifty-three percent of children that have not been to the dentist by age 3 have tooth decay by age 5, dr. Bezerra, along with the academy of Pediatric dentistry recommend a child’s first dental visit to be right around their first birthday. You may ask, “Why so young?” Well, by establishing a dental home for your child at a young age, the pediatric dentist can help guide parents in

making correct choices in diet and oral hygiene habits at home. this helps to create an ideally healthy oral health for your child, and also launches a guide to follow for both parent and child which can essentially last a lifetime. dr. Bezerra states, “one of my goals is to not blame parents, or not to make them feel uneasy about their parenting choices. since I have six children of my own, I understand what it’s like to be a parent and go through the different scenarios with children when providing care for them in the home.” along with home care and diet information, there are some concepts that parents have about bottle feeding, sippy cup usage, and pacifiers that may be incorrect, since those concepts have, in essence, been passed down through several generations. dr. Bezerra enjoys taking the time to explain the risk of severe childhood caries with all parents so that they are well informed. When parents know about how they can take

small steps at home which can help their child’s overall dental health, the parents can then reap the long-term benefits from those good choices. Ultimately, “there is a genuine gratification in a child’s eyes when I perform treatment for them. an immediate reward is received, not just by the patient, but also by their parents, and also by me. When the child feels accomplished, that feeling goes well beyond just the child; the parents and the siblings are able to share and enjoy their sense of success, too.” For appointments please call Dr. Bezerra's office at 813-991-5300, Seven Oaks Professional Park, 2242 Ashley Oaks Circle, Wesley Chapel. v

Big Brothers Big sisters of tampa Bay is reminding the community of its vision that all kids have the opportunity to reach their full potential, and they’re asking for your help. the agency pairs volunteer mentors with children facing adversity, so that local youth in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties have the one-to-one guidance they need—guidance that leads to academic success and positive choices. Big Brothers Big sisters matches “Bigs” (mentors) with “Littles” (mentees) throughout Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties, and it has two programs it’s specifically recruiting for right now, thanks to grant funding provided by the office of Juvenile Justice and delinquency Prevention. one program targets at-risk youth, ages 9 and up, who live in dade City. While many of the children served by Big Brothers Big sisters are in single-parent and low-income households, that’s not always the case. Big Brothers Big sisters is the oldest and most

successful mentoring organization in the country, and it holds itself accountable for demonstrating positive academic and social outcomes for the children served. Last year, in Pasco, Polk and Hillsborough Counties: • 96% of our Littles were promoted to the next grade level• 95% showed an increase in self-confidence• 99% had no involvement in the juvenile justice system the agency depends on community support, in the form of both volunteers and donations, in order to achieve these results. It costs approximately $1,000 a year to make and maintain a match between a Big and a Little, to cover background checks and ongoing professional support services. “operation Bigs is our newest mentoring program, and provides support for many single and two-parent military families who appreciate the opportunity to provide their child with more academic support as well as new cultural and other opportunities from another trusted adult,” says stephen Koch, Ceo and President of Big Brothers Big sisters of tampa Bay.

district for their efforts.

Cafe Freedom Cafe Freedom was founded by students at Freedom High school to engage their peers in service learning with the goal of making an impact on the well being of the community. the intent is to connect teens to initiatives in which they can make a difference. the festivals planned by the organization provide a venue to apply their creativity and passion to bring about social change for children.

Freedom High School

Café Freedom, a service learning club at Freedom High school, engages students in community-based literacy initiatives. the high school

students visit eight title 1 schools, facilitate literacy activities with 2nd graders, and distribute reading materials for the children to use at home. subsequently, the club hosts a community festival to promote literacy among underprivileged early elementary school students. the purpose of the festival and associated activities is to better prepare young students for their educational future by encouraging high schoolers to get involved and promote reading and learning activities with young children. over 1,000 2nd grade students in title 1 schools in Hillsborough County have benefited from participation in the previous years' festivals, and we have engaged three other high schools in the effort.the activities and programs promote the message of "I feel the need to read" and provide the children with books that they can continue to enjoy at home while also supporting their families in developing the fun and enjoyment of reading. the reading festival provides a context for playful experiences that apply reading and literacy skills.

Global nomads Group's youth LInKS program

Freedom High school is one of six schools nationwide chosen for the year-long program sponsored by the Us embassy in afghanistan through Global Nomads Group's Youth LINKs program. once a month, a group of 10 girls from Freedom video conference with a group of high school girls in Kabul, afghanistan. each session has a specific agenda that we work with. It ranges from many different topics. some are what life is like for each respective student, what their goals

Video conference with the parents of the students involved on both sides.

are in life, what are the current events taking place where we live, to breaking many cutural stereotypes. this is truly the classroom of the future and these fortunate students are learning things that can not be taught in a traditional classroom. the girls recently had a video conference in which the parents of the students on both ends had an opportunity to "chat" with the parents from the other country. this experience has been life changing and living in a

globally connected world makes it imperative that our future leaders have these kinds of opportunities to embrace different cultures and ethnicities! the students will meet a total of 6 times this school year using video conferencing. Both sets of students are working on final projects together. the afghan students are looking at a woman's education in their country and the Freedom High students are focusing on diversity among their peers. v

Girl scouts is celebrating 100 years of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, and Girl scouts of West Central Florida (GsWCF) invites all girls entering grades 1 – 12 to celebrate with us at camp this summer, whether or not they are Girl scouts! overnight camps are offered throughout June and July at two of the council’s camp properties, and day camps are offered throughout the eight counties GsWCF serves – there’s something for every girl! Non-Girl scouts are welcome to register for summer camp, and many girls join each year through the camp pathway as part of the new-age membership model of Girl

scouts. Girls who join at the time of summer camp pay a one-time, annual membership fee of $12. GsWCF-owned Camps dorothy thomas, scoutcrest and Wildwood are american Camp association (aCa) accredited; three of 16 aCa-accredited camps within a 100 mile radius of tampa, according to the aCa website Horseback riding, water skiing, steM (science, technology, engineering and math), healthy living, arts and crafts, and swimming are among the many activities offered at Girl scout summer camps. Can’t decide on just one? Not quite sure about sleeping away for a week? Girls can customize their camp

experiences. all sessions include sports, nature exploration, and arts and crafts, and campfires for a well-rounded camp experience. If parents are looking for a safe, secure, nurturing all-girl environment where girls of all ages are taught respect for self and others, and have amazing opportunities to explore their passions – Girl scout camp is the place for your daughter. Girl scout camp sessions are also very affordable with pricing starting at $75/girl for day camp and $175/girl for overnight camp. Girl scout summer camp programs encompass a rich history of 100 years of providing outdoor experiences for girls. Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl scouts in 1912 on the premise that girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Under her guidance, she encouraged girls to get out of their home environments and into the open air. the first Girl scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips and learned to tell time by the stars. “one hundred years later, girls are still having a blast at camp!” said Kim Jowell, Ceo, GsWCF. “one of my favorite times of year is going out to our summer camps to interact with girls. I see girls of all

ages arrive at camp somewhat shy and hesitant about the days ahead, but after several days of the Girl scout camp experience, they leave more self-confident, with new friends and truly exhausted from all the activities!”

GIRLS ARE INVITED TO CELEBRATE GIrL SCouTS’ 100TH AnnIVerSAry AT Summer CAmp!

Pack 142 got an inside look at the CsX Intermodal terminal last weekend. Jeff Brown, operations manager for the terminal, and scout parent, gave a very nice tour of the yard. We started with a safety lesson on how to behave around the machinery, and a couple of vivid stories of what he’s seen happen when mistakes were made. the scouts were quite attentive. We crossed the tracks into the yard, and walked past dozens of empty chassises and chassises with containers ready to go. He showed how containers are lifted from the trains and transfered to chassis, then how a truck will pick up the container and drive it away. We

learned how containers are supposed to be secured to chassis, and how sometimes drivers make mistakes, and what to look for if we happen to walk near a container. scouts got to try on different safety equipment, and enjoyed a refreshing water to help stay hydrated. Huge thanks to Jeff for sharing his time and effort putting this tour together.

Bear Den meeting recap

Hi Bears, No longer shall we be lost in the woods, now that we’ve learned how to navigate with a map and compass. We did a number of exercises with

maps and compasses. We looked at a compass and learned how it works. We learned how to orient ourselves to a particular heading. We then followed a course around the park by following and finding cards with headings on them. If they followed them correctly, they got a message I aM Not Lost. We also looked at maps. We showed how to orient a map to

north by using a compass. We used a satellite street map of West Meadows to plan a route from home to Clark elementary. We used a classic road map of tampa to plan a route from home to tampa airport. Lastly we used Google Maps to plan a route from tampa to cities far away. adam provided tonight’s snack: “dirt in cups”. It was quite well received. Great job, adam. v
