The Hong Kong Palace Museum

A unique museum that will add to the cultural vibrancy of the West Kowloon Cultural District and enhance Hong Kong’s status as a cultural metropolis and Asia’s world city.


The building of a new world class museum that is dedicated to the display and interpretation of artefacts from the renowned Palace Museum is a significant addition to the cultural fabric of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD).

Located on the harbourfront next to the Art Park at the western end of the District, the Hong Kong Palace Museum will join the M+ museum of visual culture, the Freespace, the Lyric Theatre Complex and the Xiqu Centre to provide local and international visitors to the District a diverse range of cultural facilities and experience.


The development of a Hong Kong Palace Museum is the result of a unique collaborative arrangement between the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Palace Museum under which the latter’s exquisite collection can be loaned to the Museum on a long-term basis. The Hong Kong Palace Museum is not a branch museum of the Palace Museum, and will be operated and managed by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority with its own professional staff and as an arts and cultural facility of the District.

This project has been made possible thanks to a generous donation of $3.5 billion by the Hong Kong Jockey Club


Charities Trust which will be used to fund the costs of design and construction of the Hong Kong Palace Museum.

he Palace Museum

One of the world’s greatest museum collections

Situated in the very heart of Beijing, the Palace Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its vast holding of over 1.8 million artefacts including paintings, ceramics, calligraphy, and antiquities belonging to the imperial collections. The Palace Museum houses many nationally protected


valuable cultural objects, but due to its huge scale only a small fraction (around 0.6%) of this extraordinary collection is able to be displayed to the public at any given time.

In the Mainland, museum collections are classified into rare and general cultural artefacts. The rare cultural artefacts are further classified into three grades. Among the 4.01 million rare cultural artefacts held in all museums (around 4,100) in the Mainland today, about 42% (about 1.68 million) belong to the Palace Museum’s collection. The collection includes over 367,000 ceramics, over 180,000 textile pieces, 53,000 paintings, 75,000 calligraphy works, 19,000 lacquer items and over 23,000 jade


objects. In 2016 the Palace Museum attracted a record 16 million visitors.


The Palace Museum and Hong Kong A History of cultural collaboration

In 2007, in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) co-organised with the Palace Museum a two-part exhibition featuring 32 masterpieces of Chinese painting and calligraphy from the Palace Museum. This exhibition attracted an overwhelming 152,000 visitors despite the short duration and space constraints of the Hong Kong Museum of Art.


In 2012, LCSD signed a collaborative agreement with the Palace Museum under which annual exhibitions are co-organised to display the rich diversity of the Palace Museum’s collection. Since then, four exhibitions have been organised and each explored a theme within the collection. These exhibitions have been extremely popular with the public attracting a total of some 430,000 visitors.

June to October 2012 Hong Kong Museum of Art A Lofty Retreat from the Red Dust: The Secret Garden of Emperor Qianlong

93 masterpieces from the Palace Museum, including items of painting and calligraphy, furniture, mural paintings, architectural elements and religious art presented in a gallery designed to reconstruct the sense of intimacy and allure of the Qianlong Garden, with the assistance of multimedia installations.


July to October 2013 Hong Kong Museum of History The Splendours of Royal Costume: Qing Court Attire

An exhibition of more than 130 textile pieces including official costumes, festive costumes, travel costumes, military costumes and leisure costumes and featuring costumes worn by Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Yongzheng, Emperor Qianlong, Emperor Tongzhi, Emperor Guangxu, and Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing dynasty.


June to September 2015 Hong Kong Science Museum Western Scientific Instruments of the Qing Court

Exhibits from the Western science and technology collection of the Palace Museum covering eight main themes: paintings, astronomy, mathematics, measurement, medicine, weapons, articles for daily use, and clocks and watches.


November 2016 to February 2017 Hong Kong Heritage Museum Ceremony and Celebration - The Grand Weddings of the Qing Emperors

A selection of portraits, documents, costumes, personal ornaments, dowry objects, wedding ritual objects and court musical instruments drawn from the Palace Museum’s collection that showcase the rituals and procedures of the grand weddings of the emperors.

Guangdong Museum Guangzhou, PRC

Conceived as an Objet d’art ina monumental scale, Guangdong Museum is an allegory to the impeccably and intricately sculpted antique Chinese artifact of a lacquer box, which collects and reflects treasures of the times. The spatial arrangement of


the museum takes its conceptual reference from the carvings of the legendary Chinese ivory concentric balls. Each carving slices through the museum box and reveals different layers and varying degrees of transparency and dialogue between the interior halls in an intricate and explorative way. The Museum is an identifiable cultural icon and gives visitors a memorable experience on Chinese traditional wisdoms as well as appreciation of the city’s cultural identity.

Yunnan Provincial Museum

Yunnan is China’s ‘colourful’ province, home to more than half of the nation’s ethnic minorities. The diverse cultures are unified by its unique landscape and accentuated by the richness of people, customs and relics. The generative concept of this museum is derived from the potent imagery of Yunnan’s famed local ‘stone forests’. It is the geography


of raw beauty and, combined with the idea of stacked boxed holding diverse and fragile historical treasures, gives the architecture its defining metaphor as an assembled container of multi-cultural artifices.

L'Opéra Bastille

The 1983 international competition was to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. Inserted into a city fabric of immense histories and interests, the concept of the proposal is founded on three levels: it is at the same time an urban


intervention, a monument and an organic filter for the city. The proposed design complements with the existing context in terms of building scale and material selection to revitalise the neglected streets. The subversive spirit of the revolution is echoed in the contemporary architectural proposition that blurs the inside and outside of the building to embrace different audience.

Festival of Vision HK in Berlin – Bamboo Pavilion

Berlin, Germany

To the Chinese, bamboo is always associated with nobler human qualities such as resilience, honesty and humility. The practical and adaptability of bamboo scaffolding not only furnishes buildings, but are also used in constructing temporary theatres where troupes provide entertainment to communities. The bamboo framework highlights the


bespoke craft of jointing, yet the triangular form of the Pavilion is contemporary and highly engineered – none of the members are horizontal or vertical as in traditional bamboo structures. The bamboo simultaneously fulfills the functions of exterior enclosure and structural support, its gossamer translucency is a result of the lattice-like, rhythmic placement of the linear bamboo members.

West Kowloon Cultural District A diverse cultural district

The West Kowloon Cultural District offers a variety of cultural venues that will cater for all interests and tastes. When the Hong Kong Palace Museum opens tentatively in 2022, it will join a number of existing facilities.


Xiqu Centre – dedicated to the xiqu artform, the Xiqu Centre features a 1,050-seat main theatre and a 200-seat tea house theatre, as well as a large public atrium with shops and restaurants, and will act as the gateway to the eastern end of the District.


Art Park – the green heart of the cultural district providing not only public space for enjoyment and relaxation but also a vibrant venue for open-air performances of music, dance, theatre, art exhibitions and other events.


Freespace – located in the Art Park is the Freespace, a place where the public can explore new artistic experiences in a black box theatre that can accommodate 450 seated or 900 standing people. There is also a café / bar where small scale performances will take place.


M+ – Hong Kong’s museum of visual culture, encompassing 20th and 21st century visual art, design and architecture, and moving image. It will be one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary visual culture in the world.


Lyric Theatre Complex – A centre for excellence showcasing the best of Hong Kong and international dance and theatre. The Lyric Theatre Complex will comprise a 1,450, 600 and 270 seat performance spaces as well as extensive rehearsal spaces and a resident companies centre.


Artist Square – a large public square that will provide a gateway to the District from the neighbouring area, and a location for events, markets and performances.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and the Palace Museum on 23 December 2016 signifies the first steps as well as a commitment from both sides to take forward the Hong Kong Palace Museum project in WKCD. There is still a lot to be


done: the Design Consultant will have to refine his design ideas and come up with a design for the Museum. Going forward, we will need to work out the internal design of the exhibition galleries, map out the themes and programmes for the long term and thematic exhibitions and plan learning and interpretation activities to be held in the Museum.
