While athletes were swimming, cy-

cling and running the course at the annual Pharmasave Christina Lake Sprint Triathlon this past Sunday, the

Grand Forks Rotary Club was sweating too. None of the local Rotarians was partic-ipating in the event

mind you, rather they were preparing for the club’s potato and chili fundraising luncheon provided for the tri-

athlon’s volunteers and participants.

Long-time Rotar-ian and luncheon event organizer Lynne Burch says the potato and chili lunch has its origins with a past Rotary event.

“The Rotary club used to have a Bike-athon and it would provide, as part of an entry fee, the chili and the baked potatoes. So when the recreation department start-ed the triathlon, the Rotary club was no longer doing the Bike-athon and they asked us to do the potato/chili feed,” Burch ex-plained.

“It’s very popular, so every year the (rec department) asks us to do it and we’re hap-py to do that.”

A lot of organizing and cooking goes into providing the food – there were about 83 adult athletes, 38

children for the Kid-Sprint event as well as numerous volunteers and spectators and this year 156 meals were served.

“We try and get numbers as best we can from the rec de-partment,” Burch ex-plains. “Everything we buy locally and we just have to be pre-pared to feed around 200 people, although this year it was a little less.”

Lilly Bryant, pro-gram services co-or-dinator for Grand

Forks Recreation, says the potatoes and chili are becoming a draw for athletes.

“The athletes look forward to that post-triathlon meal with the Rotary and the club has been pro-viding it probably for the last eight years,” Bryant said.

Bryant explained that the recreation de-partment pays a per-centage per plate to the Grand Forks Ro-tary Club, who in turn uses proceeds for the community.

News/Community

The City of Nelson wants to increase the number of homes composting their food waste, as a way to reduce the green-house gas emissions associated with haul-ing household waste to the landfill.

With the new transfer station near Pacific Insight slated to open next spring, the garbage collec-tion crew will have to drive a few extra kilometres to drop off their loads.

If there’s less gar-bage, the trucks could be emptied less fre-quently and therefore burn less fuel.

And there’s other benefits, as Council-lor Paula Kiss point-ed out at last week’s city council meeting where she spoke in favour of a motion to form a new com-mittee to oversee an assessment of com-posting options for the city.

“Organics are a re-

source ... the byprod-uct is soil we can use in the city parks,” Kiss said.

The motion was proposed by Coun-cillor Donna Mac-donald, who also recommended that a consultant be hired to complete the as-sessment and paid an amount not exceed-ing $15,000, using money from the Re-cycling Reserve Ac-count.

The majority of council supported the motion, though Mayor John Dooley tried to advice them against it. Dooley sits on the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s resource recovery plan advi-sory committee. He said the RDCK plans to start a feasibility study for a central-ized composting fa-cility in 2014.

“Why would we pay for one [study for Nelson] when we’re already paying for one by the Regional District?

“It’s paying for the

same thing twice,” Dooley said.

Several councillors were concerned the RDCK wouldn’t stick to its timeline and, if the study was done, it would assume or-ganics would be pro-cessed at the Oot-ischenia landfill near Castlegar. Kiss add-ed that the city’s not paying twice if the re-spective studies look at different things.

“If our preferred option is local pro-cessing, it will help us to have done our re-search on that, so we can give that infor-mation to the RDCK when they start their study,” Kiss said.

Councillor Deb Kozak, the only one to oppose the motion when it came time to vote, suggested the decision be put off until the next budget cycle so that all op-tions for how to fund it could be consid-ered.

Councillor Robin Cherbo said the local study might end up saving the city mon-

ey by reducing the amount of material in the waste stream.

“There might be home-based com-posting solutions that don’t involve the city picking up [the or-ganics] at all,” Cherbo said.

In Macdonald’s proposal, she out-lined that the com-posting assessment should include con-sideration of various scales of composting (home, neighbour-hood, communi-ty-wide or a combi-nation), technologies and methods avail-able and a cost analy-sis for each, what type of organics should be accepted, and how Nelson’s plan would fit with existing waste and recycling collec-tion.

The committee to oversee the assess-ment will consist of three Nelson council-lors, two members of the public, one rep-resentative from the RDCK, and one City of Nelson staff mem-ber.

News

The City of Trail has been saving for a rainy day, and this year it’s time to spend some of the nest egg.

A memorandum of the city’s 2012 fi-nancial audit was reviewed at Monday night council, and the report revealed a surplus of cash and a hefty savings account.

“We have been building up our cap-ital over the years,” said Mayor Dieter Bogs.

“Now we are in a good financial place to be able to start in-vesting in some major improvements, espe-cially in the down-town.”

Most notable is the $1.2 million ear-marked for the Vic-toria Street Corridor gateway project, set to begin this summer.

“The city is in a healthy position,” said Craig Teindl, City of Trail auditor from L. Soligo & Associates Ltd.

“This refers to the fact that as of Dec. 31, 2012, the city had enough cash and in-vestments to pay off all the debt and still have some cash left over.”

The annual audit gives an overall pic-ture of how the city is running, looking at it’s consolidated rev-enue by taking into account its general

operations, such as water and sewer op-erations, and staff and capital funds.

The financial re-port memorandum, which is available for public viewing at trail.ca, notes a 2012 surplus of almost $2 million.

Another eye-catch-ing figure noted in the report is the city’s $10 million in cash and short term invest-ments.

“Cash and short-term investments are liquid assets of the city that may be used to fund operations or capital,” explained David Perehudoff, chief administrative officer.

“Strong cash bal-ances allow the city to operate without having to borrow short-term during certain times of the year when cash is not coming in.”

More good news noted in the city’s fi-nancial statements is its growing accumu-lated surplus, now $85 milllion.

“Accumulated sur-plus is basically the net value of the city that has been built up over time,” explained Perehudoff.

He said it is not specific to one year, but accumulated since the city has been in operation, and in relation to the private sector, equivalent to retained earnings.

Thieves jeopardize Scouts trip

The Beaver Val-ley Scouts have re-lied on bottle drives to help fund outings and projects over the years but a spate of recent thefts might leave them short of cash for an upcoming trip.

In the most recent incident over the May long weekend an es-timated $400 worth of recyclable materi-als was lost to bottle thieves.

Area scouts have been raising money to help pay part of the $1,000 per person cost of attending the Canadian National Jamboree, which is being held in Syl-van Lake, Alta., the second week of July. Because these gath-erings only happen every four years the anticipation for the local troops has been growing as the date grew nearer, now the kids will have to work a little harder to cover the cost.

“The kids are un-derstandably upset,” said local scout vol-unteer, Heather Ham-er. “It’s just that much more money that they’re going to have to raise before they can go on their trip.”

Hamer said that people have been dropping off bottles and cans at her prop-erty in Beaver Falls

for years to support the trip and Camp Tweedsmuir, the lo-cal the scout camp in Fruitvale. The mate-rials are stored until they can be sorted and taken in for recy-cling.

The first loss oc-curred only last year when a couple of bags were taken. This year the thieves have stepped up their ac-tivity.

“We’ve been hit three times,” said Hamer. “Half of our latest bottle drive is gone.”

The incidents have been reported to the RCMP and Hamer is waiting to hear if any-one has been ques-tioned on the matter.

“We have had two incidents reported from the same loca-tion, both occurring in early June,” said Sgt. Rob Hawton of the Trail and Greater District RCMP.

He added the po-lice are following up on leads but refused to disclose any fur-ther information for fear of hindering the investigation.

Parts of Grand Forks were without power after an acci-dent at the local land-fill on the morning of June 19. Areas of Riv-erside Drive were af-fected, as well as most of downtown, Valley Heights and the in-dustrial area of Grand Forks.

Hal Wright, City of Grand Forks man-ager of operations, estimated half the

city was affected. Ac-cording to some mer-chants on downtown’s Market Avenue, pow-er was restored to that area around 1 p.m. that afternoon. Wright said the acci-dent involved an ex-cavator clipping wires and pulling down a pole at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) garbage dump on Granby Road.

Trail teen takes triathlon

The 2013 Pharma-save Christina Lake Sprint Triathlon took place on Sunday and it was both surpris-ing, and fitting, that a 13-year-old took top spot.

Not only was Trail’s Jackson Konkin the first out of the water for the swimming portion of the race, he finished in a time of 1:19:26, first overall and tops in the male category and amongst his age group (13 to 18 years).

BC Transit cus-tomers will enjoy a free ride July 2 to coincide with the of-ficial launch of the West Kootenay Tran-sit Committee’s new integrated regional system.

The committee, which brought to-gether three local governments and nine transit systems last year, await the unveiling of one sin-gle rider’s guide that covers transit from Nakusp to Rossland and from Kaslo to Fruitvale.

“Public transit is quite expensive for a rural area when we’ve got such a wide geog-raphy we’re dealing with so it’s all about efficiencies and ef-fectiveness and if we can pool our fleet and basically make a system that works for the whole area, it becomes much more efficient,” explained Rossland’s Kathy Wallace, committee vice chair. “The other big thing is creating a service that works from the rider’s per-spective. That’s what the whole direction has been. It’s way easier to understand, there’s one rider’s guide for the whole region.”

The committee has now created three

zones for the entire region, including the Columbia zone — which melds Cas-tlegar, Trail, Fruit-vale, Rossland and the former Kootenay Boundary service — meaning people can ride anywhere in the zone for one rate.

The other two zones — Slocan zone (Playmor Junction up to Slocan City) and the Kootenay zone, which includes Nelson — can be ac-cessed by the all-zone or regional pass.

Prior to the change, people had to pay two top ups, paying as much as $5.50 to travel across the mul-tiple service areas,

and consult several different ride guides to figure out how to get there.

Now the local zone fare for Greater Trail stays at $2 but will in-clude Castlegar, while the all-zone fare is $3.50, down from $4.

“For our service in particular, we were already a region-al service in that all of the communities were already partic-ipating and we were already doing what we could to expand the service to Cas-tlegar,” explained John MacLean, chief administrative offi-cer for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. “There

were challenges up in Central Kootenay in that they have five different services and trying to match the needs of each one of those services with a regional model was a bit of a challenge but the partners made it happen.”

The goal of the committee was to de-velop a transit system for the area, where someone can get on a bus in Trail and trav-el straight through to Castlegar, the Slocan Valley, Nakusp, or Nelson and all points in between.

The advantage of the regional system is that pooling the tran-sit resources of many

smaller communities reduces the opera-tional cost for all and provides greatly in-creased convenience for people.

MacLean could not provide an estimate on how much money will be saved now that transit is taking an integrated approach but does foresee sav-ings downstream.

“I think what it does is it helps us con-trol cost through the sharing of resources and spare busses and everything else,” he said. “That’s what the big benefit will be. That it will actually lower costs, that will be very difficult to say.”

Kerry Saari is about to take a nice stroll in beautiful s u r r o u n d i n g s … nothing unusual about that.

Well, it does hap-pen to be a hike of 88 kilometres includ-ing some extreme changes in altitude (climbing) and it needs to be done in 32 hours. at makes it kind of unusual.

Plus, she’s starting out by contributing $5,000 for the privi-lege.

Now that’s some-thing you don’t see with a lot of fund-raisers, but that’s how much Kerry believes in Canadi-an Tire’s ‘Jumpstart’ program.

Kerry has been on a training program since last December to make sure she’s prepared for the hike in the Rocky Moun-tains which is set for early September.

Kerry’s goal (along with completing the hike injury-free, of course) is to round up pledges equal to or greater than her own ve grand… with all of the money going to the program designed to give more kids (age 4-18) the bene t of access to organized sports and recreation.

It’s no secret that there is much to be gained by kids from getting involved in activity including hockey, dance, soc-cer and swimming. ese and other such pursuits are well known for helping youngsters develop important life skills,

self-esteem and con- dence.

Kerry mentions a key point in her fundraising e ort:

“ e In Memo-ry Donations that I have been receiving are in Memory of Charles O. Chris-tensen, late husband of Rosemary Chris-tensen of Castlegar,” said Saari.

“Any donations of any kind can be made at the local Canadi-

an Tire Store, or on my web site.” If you email Kerry ([email protected]) she’ll be happy to send you a link to her site.

“Just a reminder that all funds raised remain within the community and all donated funds are used for children ages 3-18 to par-ticipate in a phys-ically active activ-ity - sports, dance, horseback riding, tai

kwon do, jiu jitsu, gymnastics, moun-tain biking, Girl Guides, Brownies, Boy Scouts, Beavers, multi sport, swim-ming etc.”

So, should you happen to see Kerry Saari as she’s tread-ing her way along an uphill grade some-where in or around Castlegar in the next while, give her a wide berth, she’s on a mission!

Drive up to Sum-merhill Pyramid Winery in Kelowna and your rst impres-sion might be that you are entering a theme park, or perhaps an alternate universe. A gigantic bottle of bub-bly seems to oat in the air as its contents pour perpetually into a huge champagne ute. A huge pyra-mid sits front and centre. In the owner’s words, “ e Summer-hill Pyramid is sec-ond only to the Great Pyramid of Egypt for alignment and pre-cision.” Welcome to the weird and very wonderful world of Stephen Cipes.

In my experience, winery owners are mostly down-to-earth farm folks, deadly serious about their business, one that depends entirely on the land. Stephen Cipes, by contrast, is part New York hippie, part New Age guru and part extremely canny businessman. In a business world

that encourages con-formity, Cipes is an ethereal philosopher who sees the big pic-ture, big in the way that astronaut Chris Had eld saw it from his space station.

Behind the scenes in what Cipes and his family have built into Canada’s most visited winery is a leader in environ-mental responsibility. Organic certi cation in the vineyards was followed in 2007 by certi cation, Canada’s rst, in the winery. at’s no mean feat because the wine-making process typi-cally relies on things like sh bladders, gel-atin, egg whites, milk, and milk by-prod-ucts, primarily to clarify wine.

In 2012 it also re-ceived biodynamic certi cation in the vineyards, an ap-proach to growing that I’ll leave curious readers to research themselves. It led to

the following message on the Summerhill web site: “We were once asked whether our biodynamic prac-tices are vegan friend-ly. Some biodynam-ic preparations are made by fermenting herbs in stag bladders and cow intestines. ese animal parts are not in the wine or in any way touching the grapes. ey are used as a medium to create bene cial soil bacte-ria that aid process-es in the grapevine’s immune system. We must leave it to each individual vegan to decide whether the biodynamic prepara-tions are a deal break-er or not.”

I developed a par-ticular fondness for the Cipes family a few years ago when I was doing a story for a business magazine and scheduled a tele-phone interview with Stephen.

place names

Birchbank, north of Trail, was original-ly known as Sullivan or Sullivan Siding, a er Sullivan Creek, which in turn was likely named a er John Godfrey Sul-

livan (1863-1938), chief assistant engi-neer of the Columbia and Western railway, who went on to be-come the CPR’s chief engineer of western lines.

He designed the Connaught Tunnel through the Rock-ies and was assistant engineer on con-struction of the Pan-ama Canal. He later served on Winnipeg city council and re-

ceived an honourary doctorate from the University of Mani-toba.

Sullivan rst ap-pears as a Columbia and Western Railway stop on a schedule dated November 21, 1897 and printed in the Slocan Pioneer of December 11, 1897.

In 1912 the name was changed to Birchbank, a er the Anderson ranch on the blu above the

railway line. Accord-ing to a 1969 issue of Cominco Magazine, the name was chosen when residents failed to get post o ce ap-proval for the name Sullivan — although why is hazy. Possibly an application had already been led for Sullivan Station around New West-minster, but it didn’t open until 1913.

e ranch and rail-way siding were also

variously known as Birch eld and Birch-brook. e earliest known mention of Birchbrook is in the Nelson Daily News of October 15, 1910, while an item in the Rossland Miner of January 8, 1913 said: “Harry Anderson, of Birchbrook Or-chards, has le for Pullman …”

Further confusing matters, a 1912 map showed Birch eld

and Sullivan Station as separate places, while a billhead in the Cominco papers at the BC Provin-cial Archives dat-ed August 15, 1917 reads: “Birchbrook Orchards. Shipping point, Sullivan, BC. Birchbank post of- ce. J.D. Anderson, owner; Harry Ander-son, manager, Birch-bank, BC.”

e Birchbank post o ce opened on May 1, 1912 and closed June 30, 1929.

Today Birchbank is synonymous with the Rossland-Trail Country Club golf course and nearby picnic grounds. And yes, there are still many birch trees in the area.

BIRCHDALE

Birchdale, a tiny spot south of John-sons Landing on the east shore of Koote-nay Lake’s north arm, was home to English

brothers Noel (1888-1960) and Eric (1899-1973) Bacchus.

e community was formerly known as McIntyre’s Land-ing or McIntyres Landing a er Wil-liam Stuart McIn-tyre (1885-1979), an English farmer who came to Canada in 1909 and lived at his namesake landing as of 1911.

An early mention is in e Kootenaian of January 8, 1914, concerning a reso-lution by the Kaslo Conservatives Asso-ciation that “an addi-tional light be placed on the headland im-mediately south of McIntyre’s Landing.”

e earliest use of Birchdale is in e Kootenaian of June 17, 1926: “McIntyres Landing will in fu-ture be known as Birchdale.

In order to avoid m i s u n d e r s t a n d -ings for the present I should be obliged if business houses would bill shipments Birchdale (late McIn-tyres) until August 1 a er which date McIntyres Landing in brackets can be omitted. – Noel Bac-chus”

While the name hasn’t disappeared entirely, it’s not in widespread use.

It’s no stretch of the imagination how Birchbank was namedGREG NESTEROFFWest Kootenay Advertiser

The banks of the Columbia are close by, lots of birch trees, too. Greg Nesteroff

In 1912 the name was changed to

Birchbank after the Anderson Ranch on the bluff above the

railway line

For those looking to have a home energy assessment done, the City of Rossland will contribute $25 for the first 100 homeowners that sign up off of the cost of $60.

All homes must do an initial audit to identify necessary work, and a post-work audit to certi-

fy that the work was done.

During the initial assessment, a certi-fied energy advisor (CEA) will install energy saving fea-tures, such as energy efficient lighting, low flow shower heads, and pipe insulation.

Around $1.6 mil-lion was spent in the local economy the winter of phase one and it is estimated

that 340 tonnes of greenhouse gas emis-sions were avoided in the city with a 20-50 per cent reduction on home energy bills.

Rossland will re-ceive almost $10,000 in Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) grants in 2013. Over two thirds of the funding has been al-located to do energy audits of the arena

and City Hall.The remaining

funds (approximately $2,500) will be allo-cated to the initiative to lower the initial energy audit to 100 Rosslanders.

Castlegar, Grand Forks and Trail have committed to pay $25 towards the first 100 participants to regis-ter as well.

The City of Ross-land will be credited

with having invest-ed in the program, meaning the city could claim the cred-its generated. The city needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emis-sions by 400 tonnes to meet its requirement.

Homeowners can complete an online application form and submit it within the next four weeks.

Once people are registered, Fortis-

BC will help them through the next steps, conducting an initial home energy assessment with a cer-tified energy advisor, make a commitment to complete at least one home energy effi-ciency upgrade before Dec. 31, complete a post-retrofit evalua-tion before March 31, 2014 and keep all ret-rofit receipts and sub-mit at the post retrofit

evaluation to receive rebates

For LiveSmart BC rebates, participants must book and com-plete the post assess-ment prior to March 31, 2014.

For more informa-tion, contact FortisBC PowerSense Ambas-sador Shelley Hastie at 368-1918, email at [email protected] or visit fortisbc.com/energydiet.

Our body needs salt to survive, send nerve impulses and contract and relax our muscles. As a bo-nus salt adds flavor

and helps preserve foods.

In our North American food sys-tem, hoever, we get way too much of a good thing.

The average Cana-dian consumes about

3400 milligrams of sodium daily.

This is over double the recommended

intake of 1500 milli-grams, and it is fifty per cent higher than the upper tolerable

limit of 2400 milli-grams (which equals one teaspoon).

This high salt in-

take does not come without consequenc-es.

According to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation three in ten Canadi-ans have high blood pressure caused by too much dietary salt.

High blood pres-sure is a major risk factor for cardiovas-cular disease and has been identified by the World Health Organization as the leading risk factor for premature death in the world.

Here are a few strategies to reduce your salt intake. When the occasion arises where you’re eating out order dressings on the side and watch out for foods described as pickled, marinated,

smoked, barbequed, teriyaki, soy sauce, broth, miso, gravy, bacon and, of course, salted.

Look for products that contain less than 200 milligrams of so-dium per serving.

Be aware of serv-ing sizes and think about how many servings you usually eat.

What may seem like only a small amount of sodium can add up fast as you double or triple the servings. Thor-oughly rinse canned foods.

The best way to avoid a high salt diet is to shop the perim-eter of the grocery store, choose whole foods and cook from scratch as much as possible.

For more informa-tion on sodium visit the Healthy Families BC website at: www.healthyfamiliesbc.ca/sodium-sense.

Community

Castlegar’s Teddy Bear Picnic wasn’t dampened by the tor-rential rains on June 19. With just three hours notice, the ven-ue was changed to the Community Complex and more than 200 babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers showed up for the fun. Face painting, an obsta-cle course, the teddy bear hospital, arts,

crafts and the aborigi-nal community drum kept the little ones actively engaged. Dis-plays from communi-ty agencies, organiza-tions and child care

centres highlighted information for par-ents on programs and services available in the area.

The event includ-ed a special cele-

bration of the new toddler playground equipment that was installed at Kins-men Park this spring. The Castlegar Early Childhood Commu-nity Advisory Coun-cil, hosts of the event, presented Certificates of Appreciation to the Columbia Ba-sin Trust, Kootenay Savings & Heritage Credit Unions, and recognized the City of Castlegar and the

West Kootenay Toy run Association for their support of the playground project.

To top it all off, Lola the Clown provided fun with her animal balloons, and Safire Jones kept everyone moving with her hula hoops of all sizes. A spirit of community pride, undaunted by the wet weather, per-meated the event.

Families looking to get out of town this long weekend can tap into their inner ex-plorer with BC Parks.

With more than 1,030 provincial parks and protected areas to ex-plore, there’s an ad-venture waiting for

everyone.Kids of all ages can

take Jerry’s Promise in the BC Parks Passport. Jerry the Moose, BC

Parks’ mascot, helps park visitors learn about ways they can keep parks healthy for all to enjoy now and into the future. e free BC Parks Passport is one way to explore and learn more about British Columbia’s parks system.

Collect six stamps at over 200 participat-ing provincial parks to earn a collectible prize, and six stick-ers from a BC Visitor Centre to earn anoth-er treasure. Passports also include advice on trip-planning and Vis-itor Centre coupons,

and can be picked up at any visitor centre in B.C. and most provin-cial parks.

Passport holders who attend a Learn to Fish program are also eligible to collect a starter shing tackle gi , which can be col-lected from a Freshwa-ter Fisheries Society of BC visitor centre.

e free Learn to Fish program intro-duces youth and their families to recreational sport shing. O ered at many BC Parks around the province in July and August and delivered by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, Learn to Fish has a strong focus on conservation and increasing envi-ronmental awareness.

Almost 20 million people visit BC Parks each year, and camp-ing reservations in BC Parks are up 14 per cent this year to-date, with 74,174 res-

ervations compared to 65,119 reservations during the same peri-od in 2012.

ere are over 5,000 reservable sites in 95 provincial parks throughout B.C. Up to three reservations can be made online in one easy transac-tion through Dis-cover Camping, the Province’s camping reservation service. Many BC Parks still o er rst-come, rst-served campsites for visitors without reser-vations.

“With school just out, families are gear-ing up for their sum-mer vacations,” says Mary Polak, Minis-ter of Environment, “Many of these va-cations include trips to BC Parks. With so much to see and do in our own backyard and beyond, children of all ages will nd fun in BC Parks this sum-mer.”

We feel that a bike shop is a vital need in any town and that Grand Forks is especially in need of a shop that provides great service due to our very rideable terrain and the number of its residents that ride and ski our roads and trails. For those who wish a mellow ride along the Trans Canada Trail we provide a shuttle

to the Eholt summit during summer months. This summer, for the rst time in Grand

Forks we will be offering a very different kind of ride in our PEDICAB on special

occasions or when needing a ride home from the pub. We are also strong supporters of the following

community recreational clubs; Grand Forks Cycling Club, Kettle River Mountain Bikers’ Association,

He was gracious, articulate and gen-erous with his time. As the interview was about to end, his son Gabe entered the room. Stephen put his phone on speak-er mode and had Gabe explain about how Summerhill was embarking on bio-dynamics. He was as bright and genuine as his dad.

Over the years, Summerhill has built a great reputation with its sparkling wines—the reason Cipes got into the business in the first place—and has won head-to-head compe-titions against French Champagnes. But founding winemak-er Eric von Krosigk, who recently returned to Summerhill, sets a high bar for all the wines produced.

I recently sampled two wines that will be of interest to consum-ers who want organic products, as well as those who have ad-verse reactions (head-aches, stuffed nasal passages) to most wine.

Ezra Cipes, Gabe’s brother, is CEO at Summerhill now, says

that Alive, which is made in red and white versions, is a new line designed to fit in with a healthy lifestyle.

“One of the things that our most loy-al customers tell us is that they choose Summerhill because when they drink or-ganic, they don’t suf-fer certain reactions that they associate with conventional wine. These are wines that will still love you in the morning (un-less you abuse them, of course, but perhaps I’m taking the meta-phor too far),” he says.

2012 Alive white is a very satisfying blend of 70 per cent Pinot Gris, 15 per cent Pi-not Blanc, 5 per cent Gewurztraminer, five per cent Viognier, three per cent Char-donnay and two per cent Muscat. With only 10.4 per cent al-cohol content, this is a great introductory wine for people who think they don’t like wine. We drank our first glass on the patio after work one eve-ning, then finished it off with baked ribs and mashed potatoes with asparagus. It has bursting with floral aromas, and has a lovely, full mouth feel

with sufficient acidity to complement most any kind of food.

2012 Alive red is a blend I haven’t come across before, with 50 per cent Mare-chal Foch, 34 per cent Merlot and 15 per cent Syrah. With 24 months in French and American Oak barrels, this is a wine that will make a hap-py addition to grilled meats and vegetables, as well as anything with a tomato sauce. Expect notes of black-berry, black currant, leather and plum from this wine that clocks in with a 14.1 per cent alcohol con-tent. Both Alive wines should be available at BC Liquor Stores.

The Summerhill Pyramid Winery story is, deservedly, now part of our pro-vincial lore. It’s been a remarkable success on many levels and has help draw count-less tourists to the Okanagan. And it has all been done by very nice people, to whom we should be grateful for choosing BC as their home.

Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural

Resource Operations

NELSON - Five companies in an innovative forestry practices agreement have had their com-bined allowable annu-al cut raised by 22,000 cubic metres per year, a 6.3 per cent increase effective Jan. 1, 2012, until Dec. 31, 2015.

The regional execu-tive director awarded the increase after re-viewing their appli-cation, forestry plan, timber supply analy-sis, and considering public and First Na-tions input.

Updated inventory work was the primary forest practice that supported the in-

crease. This increase does not affect the allowable annual cut for the Arrow timber supply area, which re-mains unchanged at 550,000 cubic metres.

The five affected licensees are ATCO Wood Products Ltd., Kalesnikoff Lumber Co. Ltd., International Forest Products Ltd., Stella-Jones Canada Inc. and Tolko Indus-tries Ltd.

The agreement area covers 605,600 hect-ares within the Arrow timber supply area. Under the agreement, licensees conduct ac-tivities above their ba-sic forestry manage-ment obligations with a view to improve timber productivity.

Under delegated authority of the For-est Act, the ministry’s

Kootenay Boundary regional executive di-rector made the deci-sion to increase the allowable annual cut of the innovative for-estry practices agree-ment-holders.

Licence holders must comply with conditions of the increase, the agree-ment, the Forest Act, the Forest and Range Practices Act and oth-er relevant legislation.

The Arrow Timber Supply Area is in the West Kootenay area of the province, with 40 per cent of the population living in the communities of Castlegar, Trail and Rossland. Copies of the decision rationale are available on the ministry’s website at: www.for.gov.bc.ca/rsi/IFPA/IFPA.htm

New report, expert panels and NASA

satellite photos show need to map, monitor and manage supplies in an era of drought and climate change

TORONTO, June 25, 2013 /CNW/ - Millions of Ca-nadians depend on groundwater for their supplies, yet we know little about this un-derground supply or how it’s changing over time, says the author of a new policy paper presented here today.

Ed Struzik, award-winning envi-ronment writer, told leading Canadian and international experts that it’s important to do more to map, monitor and manage groundwater supplies because our reliance on this resource is bound to increase.

Mapping tells us where groundwater is, how it moves and how it is replenished over time. Monitor-ing tells us how much groundwater we have, what its quality is, and how the quantity and quality are changing. But mapping and monitoring water far below the earth’s surface is not easy or cheap.

“There are tech-nologies for making groundwater visible and options for in-ternalizing costs. We need to embrace these tools,” Struzik said in his paper and presen-tation, Underground Intelligence: The need to map, monitor and manage Canada’s groundwater resources in an era of drought

and climate change.“If we continue to

treat groundwater with a lack of respect, we do so at our peril.”

The frequency and intensity of droughts since the 1990s and effects of climate change make it all the more important to treat groundwater more seriously, he noted.

“We already face groundwater prob-lems, and they will likely get worse as agricultural activities intensify, as demands on water from cities and industry, min-ing and energy de-velopments grow, as pollutants migrate from historical and current sources into groundwater and as the impacts of climate change alter precip-itation patterns and the storage of water in glaciers, snowpack and reservoirs.”

Struzik’s presen-tation took place at a day-long session hosted by the Uni-versity of Toron-to’s Munk School of Global Affairs Pro-gram on Water Issues. His presentation was webcast and the ses-sion included panel discussions and ques-tions by participating experts and the live and Internet audi-ence.

The event includ-ed a presentation of striking NASA pho-tos showing changes in groundwater levels across North Ameri-ca.

In both his paper and presentation, Struzik noted that better mapping and monitoring — which

can assist in better management — are possible thanks to these kinds of ad-vances in research and technology.

“ G r o u n d w a t e r mapping and model-ing can help farmers, industry, municipali-ties, and even man-agers of natural areas plan on how much groundwater can be pumped from an aquifer without run-ning it dry.

Mapping and mod-eling can help sci-entists predict how groundwater will re-spond to stresses such as over-pumping, sea-water intrusion, ur-banization, drought and climate change,” said Struzik.

The solutions are costly and will require more inter-govern-mental cooperation and new financing — including taxes in some cases, Struzik added. At the same time, better mapping, monitoring and man-agement are possible, and critically im-portant, because up to one-third of Ca-nadians depend on groundwater.

Struzik made 10 recommendat ions including putting a more realistic price on water use for Ca-nadians.

“Water is one of Canada’s most impor-tant natural assets, one that contributes between $7.8 and $22.9 billion to the economy each year.

It’s time for more jurisdictions to start putting a price on groundwater and on surface water,” he said.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS

Each spring, animals are faced with an unnecessary danger: cosmetic pesticides.

These chemicals are used to control unwanted weeds and make lawns and gardens more attractive, but it’s increasingly clear that these bene ts come at the expense of human and animal health. The World Health Organization and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have published studies linking pesticide exposure to certain types of cancer.More than 39 B.C. municipalities -- including Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Maple Ridge, Whistler and Kelowna -- have adopted bylaws to ban cosmetic pesticide use due to the risks to humans, pets and wildlife. However, without province-wide legislation to prevent the sale of cosmetic pesticides it’s likely that consumers will continue to buy them. The BC SPCA has joined the Canadian Cancer Society in calling for a ban on the use and sale of cosmetic pesticides in B.C. The ban would encompass private lawns as well as sports elds, parks and playgrounds.“Seven other provinces have already banned the sale of cosmetic pesticides and we believe B.C. should follow suit,” says Geoff Urton, man-ager of stakeholder relations for the BC SPCA. “The chemicals used in these products are highly toxic and present real risks to the health and well-being of our pets and wildlife species.”Pets, like children, are at greater risk from pesticide exposure because they are closer to the ground. Worse, though, is the fact that animals can easily consume the chemicals used in products that kill weeds.“If your dog or cat steps on grass that’s been treated with pesticides, the next time he licks his paws he is ingesting poison,” says Geoff Urton. “Or imagine a mother robin pulling a pesticide-covered worm from your lawn and feeding it to her newly-hatched offspring.”It’s estimated that 25 per cent of B.C. households with a lawn or garden still use cosmetic pesticides. Until a pesticide ban is in place, take precautions to protect the animals in your care:

• Pay attention to “keep off grass” and avoid areas where pesticides may have been used.• Wash and wipe your pet’s paws when they come in from outside.• Pay particular attention to between the pads where substances can become trapped in fur, and the undersides of claws, where chemicals can also become embedded.

End the use of cosmetic pesticides in B.C. Visit the Cana-dian Cancer Society website to email B.C.’s party leaders in support of a ban.

Everyone wants to improve their gardening capabilities. Here are some great tips to help you better your green thumb.

• Let all your planning ahead be for your plants; a year ahead for annuals, two years ahead for the biennials, an inde nite number of years ahead for the trees. Also going through your garden to scout for insects and diseases at least once per week is a good idea. If caught early these problems are easier to treat.

• Consider your garden private territory. Be honest about what you want; if you like woody plants, design a four-season shrub border. Besotted with peonies? Make a peony walk. Grow plenty of what you love, and do not concern yourself with what others may say.

• Climbers take up little ground space, and they can be employed for many purposes: to clothe a boring fence, to scramble over a dead tree, to frame an archway, to drape a wall, to disguise a shed, or to climb lightly onto a pergola. ey demand comparatively little attention, once they have taken hold of their support, maybe a yearly pruning or a kindly rescue if they have come adri in a gale.

• Make your own compost. Using compost by spreading it around plants to ward o disease; put a bit in your potting mix to add slow-release micronutrients; top-dress beds with it to improve soil structure no matter what kind of soil you have; use it to help restore life to soil that’s exhausted from years of chemical abuse. Sprinkle it on the lawn spring and fall to encourage the shallow grass roots.

• Plant health depends on healthy roots; healthy roots depend on healthy soil for air, water and nutrients

delivered in forms plants can use. Again- compost!

• Planning a fragrant garden can be very rewarding. You can mix similar fragrances to emphasize a speci c e ect. Try mixing lavender with fennel for a sweet, edible aroma. More experimentally, mix basil, tomato plants and lemon geraniums for a Bloody Mary garden!

• Play with shady plants. ese o en contain more subtle colours and so lighting, two characteristics

that bring out feelings of serenity as well as solitude in the garden.

• If you are planning a new garden with lots of owering

plant material, why not include plants that will attract one of nature’s smallest miracles; the Ruby- roated Hummingbird or a beautiful butter y?

• Start with healthy plants to help your

container garden reach its full potential earlier in

the season. Healthy plants bounce back faster a er

the inevitable traumas they encounter when moving from their

small, temporary cell packs or pots to roomier quarters.

Sculpture Talk

‘Standing Figure’ (concrete)

Christopher Petersen’s entry to Sculpturewalk this year is strong and simple. e Argenta-based sculptor (and colleague of repeat presenter Spring Shine) presents a ten foot high form made from concrete that provides distinct contrast between exposed ag-gregate and smooth concrete.

Austere yet elegant, the gure is distinguished by a line that runs halfway up, creating the impression of two legs tightly together and slightly bent at

the knees. e top half is solid, with a strong rounded, hori-zontal form at the top, coun-tering the long vertical that makes up ‘Standing Figure’. Nominal feet protrude at the bottom of the piece. It is an ab-stract but beautifully worked sculpture that “represents the duality that makes up who we are, embracing the balance, morning and night,” as Peters-en explains on the nameplate.

“I try to challenge the [view-ers] imagination with simple forms and complex texture,” he says matter-of-factly. “ I became interested in sculpture while working on heavy timber house construction. ere are obvious similarlities, though of course in the latter you are following blueprints, working in a set fashion. Sculpting frees me up from pre-determined lines and forms.”

Petersen moved from Vancou-ver Island to the relative soli-tude of Argenta over twenty years ago and feels the tight-knit community and sur-rounding nature suit him just ne.

“Working building timber

frame houses provided the in-spiration, and in some cases, the materials to experiment in and broaden my sculpting,” he explains. “It is important for me to move toward the ab-stract as it leaves room for any-thing to become everything.”

‘Standing Figure’ re ects the re nement Petersen has devel-oped in his abstraction. He has created a work that exempli- es what he seeks to achieve, regardless of the medium he is working in: wood, concrete or stone.

His sculpture is deceptively straightforward at rst glance, but closer inspection reveals the textures and ow it ex-hibits. ‘Standing Figure’ is a ne example of the challenge Petersen o ers the viewers, along with the appreciation gained from close study of his captivating, charismatic work displayed here.

‘Green Man’ (bronze)

Daniel Kloc returns again with another nely detailed, beautiful bronze for us to enjoy. ink back two years ago: Kloc scooped top prize in the Artistic Merit category for his brooding, artful work Raven. Last year he presented Chie ain, a head and shoulders bronze that again displayed his elaborate, nely honed sculptural style. Re ned through study, and a spell at an Okanagan metalwork’s foundry, he traveled overseas to learn and absorb. e end result is Kloc’s transformation into his own artis-tic persona, showing unique and distinctive style with every sculp-ture he produces.

is year, he exhibits something di erent, a wall mount he’s titled ‘Green Man’. It’s a pretty apt descrip-tion – the patinas in the sculpture literally resonate. ‘Green Man’ re-veals the advances in Kloc’s style and interpretation. It’s a work that is enigmatic, cryptic and brilliantly imaginative.

Elaborate, and in uenced by his Eastern European (re-acquainting with his roots) sojourn, the bust is trans xing. Nominally a leering, scowling face, the devil is in the details. Literally, it is a scary good sculpture. A grimacing face is dis-tinguishable, featuring a hooked, prominent nose above an imagined moustache and spindly, pointed, satanic-like goatee. Wild, crazed hair envelops the face and hides images and discernments within it.Imagination and interpretation drives Kloc’s work. is is even more powerfully realized in ‘Green Man’. Illusory masks, faces, objects and items are potentially hidden within the tangled, enveloping de-monic hair and face.

e waves of cascading hair o er up hidden imagery, or do they? At the top of the mane, a split-faced, mask-like apparition seems vis-ible. Who is to really say though? Is there something recognized there, or is it simply imagination? It is part of the brilliance and cleverness of the sculpture; continued viewing reveals all to some, little to others. It’s really all in what the mind/

viewer perceives, as Kloc is happy to have it.

“I like to think this sculpture syn-thesises my main in uences,” he says. “Obviously my background and time spent in Eastern Europe is an in uence, particularly in the stylization. I’ve been swayed by works I’ve seen in my travels, espe-cially old world European frescos.

“At the same time, I’ve added other inspirations into the ‘Green Man’. You can see bits of nature here, and certainly some of the primitive art from other cultures – some ancient and others modern – that guide my vision. I’ve attempted to work a lot of my in uences into a wall mount that is necessarily detailed and complex. We’ll see how it is received.”

It’s safe to say that the complexity, detail and imagery Kloc incorpo-rates into the phantasmagoric work he presents this year will be as enthusiastically received as his previous entries. He is a talented sculptor in uenced by equal parts past and present. Always though, he is unique and inventive - his own artist.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Many new beginnings are underway for you. You are being given a big green light by the universe, perhaps even a push or a shove. Balancing inspiration and desperation may be necessary. Creating beauty in your home and/or family environment is ideal. The deeper levels of this cycle indicate metamorphic changes. Cooperate with this dynamic because resistance is futile anyway.

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)A busy cycle persists. At best it is affording many opportunities and forging new alliances. Your ambitions are running high so you are in a good position to capitalize. At worst you feel overwhelmed by choice and circumstance. While the tone will settle down soon the overall momentum will continue. The key is to be committed to forge a brighter future.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Over the past year or so you have set your sights higher, made some key moves and taken a few risks. Now and over the coming year it is time to capitalize on these efforts. Your willingness to learn, adapt and improvise is extra important. This may well include training or apprenticeship. In the short term, decipher what constitute your best talents and focus on them.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Some big and exciting opportunities are coming to the fore. If you have been waiting faithfully for your window of op-portunity, your patience is about to be rewarded. The momentum will remain steady but this certainly represents a turn towards something new and probably different. Concentrate your focus and put in the extra time and effort now.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Some cycles move faster and some slower and this is a slower one. Your basic challenge now is to tune-in and trust this ow. The efforts of yesteryear are in a composting phase. This may not sound very exciting but compost is the basis of fertilizer, a key ingredient to abundant growth. Patient perseverance backed by faith and vision is the recipe.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)The future beckons and its call will get louder over the coming weeks and months. The time has come to expand upon and/or fortify your overall foundation. This will require an extra assertion of your will and a clear application of strategic thinking. A steady and perhaps steep learning curve is implied. It is extra important that you clarify your basic direction.

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)Everyone is undergoing a cycle of expansion in new areas. For you it is in your overall status, quo, public standing, reputa-tion and/or career. You are meant to pay your dues somehow. At best you will recognize this extra burden to be the invest-ment that it is. Taking calculated steps versus blind leaps is important and this trend will continue.

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)A steady pace of advancement continues. Yet it comes on the heels of decline and ending. Do not be ashamed, defeated or depressed by these. The cycles of life work this way. It is less likely an issue of your sincere efforts and abilities in the past and more one of the larger rhythm and ow. Nurture a philosophical perspective as your enter this new territory.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)While wisdom includes knowing how and when to assert it also includes knowing how and when to surrender. You know, “you gotta know when to hold them, when to fold them, when to walk away and when to run”. Of course, the game goes on and there will be other hands. Besides, while the cards are being dealt, your investments are generating pro ts.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)Your world is in a steady rate of expansion. Your social life and perhaps especially your family network will undergo a big boost of energy and focus over the coming months. This will prove to be a big spark of new beginnings. Naturally, these are the ip side of things ending. Yet, in the short term anyway, there will be big reasons to rejoice.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)Jupiter entering Cancer is producing a boost and shift of some kind for everyone. For you it is linked to your work and/or lifestyle rhythm. You are in the mood to build upon new foundations. The time is right to take a few calculated risks and perhaps make some key investments. This includes new educational pursuits and training.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)Some signi cant changes in your overall philosophy of life are brewing. These are activating you to implement more creative variety into your usual approach. A ne blend of strategic rational mixed with intuitive receptivity, of mind and heart, is the key. Excess of either will produce imbalance. You are in a creative cycle now, act on it!

Horoscope for the Week June 28, 2013Horoscope Horoscope for theTip of the Week: The Water Snake is living up to its name. Massive ooding all over the world, immense tornadoes, raging res, in-land hurricanes and devastating anomalies occurring all over the world has our collective attention. The Snake is considered a karmic sign in Chinese Astrology. It refers to change, transformation, puri cation, death, rebirth and renewal. In Western Astrology all the signs are there as well in the planetary line-up. This phase of activity is unlikely to slow down soon, in fact, the momentum will likely increase. It is not that the planetary line-up or the Water Snake causes these events to occur. The keyword is synchronicity. This means that the signs revealed in these alignments and the overlapping cycles they refer to are signs more than they are causes. What ‘causes’ a thing to be or an event to happen is one of the most fundamental questions humanity has ever posed and not everyone is satis ed that we have found the answers yet. Religious authorities have forever simply said that it is the work of God. Even staunch scientists refer to the ravages of nature to be ‘acts of God’. What exactly is meant by the term God is also up for debate and has been a source of suffering, forever it seems. The clash of interpretations wrapped in emotionally charged belief has and continues to produce actual warfare between some of the many religions in the world. This is why some scientists have and continue to work so hard to wipe out the notion of a God. Yet, many assert that replacing the notion of God with a materialistic philosophy is not only limiting, it is even more dangerous. Astrology works by virtue of an intelligence woven into creation, an all pervasive consciousness. Call it what you will, there is certainly intelligent design in nature and therefore a designer. The current questions remain regarding what causes cataclysms. Saying that it is all a part of the grand design of nature and occurs according to cycles is something most people will agree upon. As it is, humanity is suffering and what the world needs now is love, love, love…. Some would say it is the best word to describe the primary cause and it is also a key feature of the cure.

Going away to camp can be the highlight of a child’s year: after all, a cab-in full of friends and non-stop fun without parental rules seems like a great proposi-tion.

But the idea of be-ing away from home can also be daunting to children-especially

for those who’ve nev-er been before-and can stir up feelings of anxiety and a fear of the unknown.

Emotionally pre-paring your kids for camp is just as im-portant as packing that extra sweater and raincoat.

Amidst the last-minute panic to get ready, it’s also a step that can easily be for-gotten.

Help your child gear up for summer camp physically and emotionally with tried and true tactics to ensure summer fun.

Get kids involved. Engaging kids in the decisions about their camp experience is a great way to prepare them emotionally.

Help kids feel more confident and relaxed by allowing

them some say in the choosing of the camp, the amount of time away from home and the activities they can register for.

Practice, practice, practice. Having short, overnight trips away from home can be a great way to prepare a child for a longer stay at camp. “Camping out” over-night at a friend’s or family member’s

house allows a child to test the waters of separation in a com-fortable and familiar environment.

Kids can also prac-tice writing letters during this time. If email isn’t an option, you can provide pre-stamped, pre-ad-dressed envelopes and paper before children leave home to make the task of writing a letter that

much easier.Leave on a good

note. Stay positive when dropping a child off at camp. Avoid using phrases like, “I hope all goes well” or, “What will I do without you?” as they can leave a child worried that some-thing bad might hap-pen while away from home.

Looking for sup-port? You and your

family may have access to an Em-ployee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) through the organization you or your partner works for.

To find out, re-view your benefits information, ask Human Resources, visit workhealthlife.com, or simply call Shepell-fgi at 1-855-213-6608.
