The signing of the Friendship Agreement on May 17—Norway’s National Day—with Surnadal, Norway, was an historic event for the City of Rossland.

According to the friendship agreement, the document (signied in Norway was “in rec-ognition of our shared history through Olaus

Jeldness. He ties the bonds from Surnadal to Rossland with his skiing exploits and his passion for life, sports and community.

The agreement states that in “the fu-ture our two commu-nities could consider working together on an exchange, possibly a student exchange program, a program for cultural exchange or coordinated sports

events.” Both commu-nities will always have their doors open to anyone in these com-munities who would like to come for a visit.

Mayor re-elected to represent BC at Fed-eration of Canadian Municipalities’ table; City has earned over $1.6M from FCM sup-ported Gas Tax since ‘08.

There is another feather in Nelson’s cap and a strength-ened local tie with Ottawa following last week’s Federation of Canadian Munici-palities (FCM) An-nual Conference and Tradeshow, held in Vancouver.

Nelson Mayor John Dooley has been re-elected to the na-tion-wide organiza-tion’s board, as chair of the BC Caucus, for a second year.

“Being elected by

fellow BC mayors, councillors and re-gional district repre-sentatives is an even greater honour the second time ‘round, for both the City and myself, ” says Dooley. “It’s a great advantage to the people of Nel-son and the citizens of British Colum-bia, because I’m that much more familiar with the FCM’s pro-cesses and systems. Last year I made a

lot of connections on the federal front. Now the people we need to work with in Ottawa know me, and I know them.”

In his role as chair, Dooley will represent 181 BC local gov-ernments, including villages, cities and re-gional districts.

Last week, an Angus Reid survey found that 71 per cent of Canadians are sat-isfied with their local

government services — that’s a higher per-centage of satisfac-tion than any other level of government. Municipalities pro-vide the lion’s share of front-line services to Canadians, while col-lecting just eight cents of every tax dollar.

“While local gov-ernments strive to continue improving all of the essential services they pro-vide to Canadians,” says FCM president Claude Dauphin. “Whether it’s clean water, safe streets, or fast, reliable public transit, the survey re-sults show we have a foundation of support among our citizens to build on.”

“It’s time to partner for the greater good of the country and we are just getting start-

ed.” Dooley stresses

that municipal and federal governments working together must be the rule, not the exception.

More than 1,800 municipal delegates attended the FCM’s Vancouver event, the organization’s 76th annual conference. And for the first time, says Dooley, BC had 100 per cent partici-pation from all of its FCM member com-munities — the high-est level of participa-tion of any province or territory in the na-tion this year.

The mayor says there are many rea-sons to fully partici-pate in the FCM, but few as financially vital as the Federal Gas Tax initiative.

Since the age of four, Scott Woods has been playing the d-dle.

Inspired by his father and mother, Woods carried on the family business of performing by shar-ing his love for all things music.

Last Tuesday (June 11) the Scott Woods Band stopped by the Grand Forks Second-ary School auditori-um to play its Swing-ing Fiddles concert. e show is di er-ent every year with new additions to the group and di erent themes of music. is particular perfor-mance showcased the swinging sounds of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

Along with the band itself – that en-compasses Scott’s mother, nephew, and other various fami-ly members – young talented musicians and dancers are in-vited to perform with the show as it travels across the country playing 150 concerts.

e act of step dancing is one that frequently occurs during the show. Woods explains that this type of dance can be categorized as

“a mix between the American style clog-ging to country mu-sic and tap-dancing to pop music except they (dance) to ddle tunes.”

Step dancing was done in logging camps many years ago.

In the evenings and weekends the work-ers would play ddles and button accordi-ons and have dances. is was their enter-tainment sans alco-hol.

ere were no women around to dance with at these gatherings, so the men would have to nd a way to dance by themselves.

e workers would

dance by tapping their feet while playing and others would step dance over a plank of wood or the top of a tree stump.

Fiddling is a trade in the Woods family that has been passed down six generations to Scott.

e Fergus, Ont. native went on to compete in and win the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest twice, and is also a two-time winner of the Cana-dian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion-ship.

Scott has per-formed and compet-ed around not only Canada, but the Unit-ed States and Europe as well.

One piece of advice that Scott has to bud-ding musicians is one that many may have heard before: “Prac-tice, practice, prac-tice.”

Scott also stresses the importance of the relationship between business and per-forming.

Scott says that performing is “the easy part,” but com-ing from a business background he says it is very important to look at that side of his cra as well to create a sure re way to suc-ceed.

‘Heads Up, Grizzly’ (bronze)

e daughter of noted sculptor Fran Jenkins, British Columbia na-tive Cathy Jenkins learned the joy of creating artistic works at an ear-ly age. Born in Williams Lake and raised in Revelstoke, the wilder-ness of her Selkirk Mountain sur-roundings and her mother’s studio together have instilled a love of na-ture and its residents, particularly grizzly bears. So her rst appear-ance at Sculpturewalk Castlegar is a homecoming of sorts, with an impressive bronze rendition of her favourite subject as an appropriate entry.

Now an acclaimed professional sculptor herself, Jenkins works from her studios and new, adjoin-

ing showroom in Langley full-time. She creates exquisite studies of grizzlies, and other animals too, in marble, serpentine, and bronze.

“I am following in my mother’s footsteps,” she says with an easy laugh. “Her animal pieces certainly inspired me to study and ultimate-ly sculpt them, as she continues to do. Our interpretations and styles di er of course, but we share a common love of wildlife. Grow-ing up in Revelstoke, well, grizzly bears are a part of the essence of the town. It’s understandable they are one of my favourite subjects.”

She worked sanding and polishing her mother’s sculptures as a teen-ager - absorbing knowledge on technique and material while do-ing so - and sold her rst sculpture at the age of 19. Years of practice and learning, coupled with ongo-ing sales and increased recognition plus a two year course in animal studies at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmon-ton, convinced Jenkins that sculpt-ing would be her livelihood. She hasn’t looked back since.

e only Canadian - and o en awarded - member of the Ameri-can Women Artists (AWA) col-lective, Jenkins bronze is one of a number of animal studies she is currently working on. ‘Heads Up, Grizzly’ portrays the undis-puted king of B.C.’s mountains in a classic, favoured pose. Hunch-ing slightly behind a rocky crag, the bear is alert and aware, head

erect, one massive paw resting on the outcropping of rock. Jenkins’ sculpture captures the sheer power and bulk of the animal - the mas-sive haunches, roiling shoulders, attentive face and distinctive hump are all wonderfully de ned as he surveys his surroundings warily.

“I chose to cast ‘Heads Up, Grizzly’ in bronze for the Castlegar event as it’s a medium I’m exploring more and more,” she says. “Usu-ally I work in marble or serpentine. Both of them are such a beautiful stone in their nished state, full of muted shades, colours and granu-lar diversity. Whichever it is, I truly believe the stone I’m working with guides my artistic instincts to an extent.”

Just back from an inspiring three-day workshop on patinas in Love-land, Colorado, Jenkins is not yet certain what the nished hues of her sculpture will be. ‘Still mull-ing that nal decision over,” she says with a ready smile. Without a doubt, the chosen patina will compliment her sculpture well. With ‘Heads Up, Grizzly’ Jenkins impressively captures the regal magni cence and undeniable presence of her favourite subject for us to enjoy.

‘Rusty’ (metal)

Artistically, Nelson artist Cedar Mueller is almost exclusive in her chosen portrayals. Both gure strongly in her everyday life too: horses and grizzly bears.

Raised in the Tatlayoko Valley in the Chilcotin region of central Brit-ish Columbia, Mueller grew up rid-ing and spending most of her wak-ing free hours with her horse Minx. She studied to be a wildlife biologist and a er several stops around the province studying grizzly bears – adding a husband and two children along the way – she is now settled in Nelson where she is focusing on developing her career as an artist.

Displaying an artistic bent from an early age, Mueller not too long ago renewed her painting pursuit more seriously; a friend bought one of the boldly coloured, assured studies that she had hung in their home. A lot more excellent acrylics have followed, but the raison d’etre for her rst time entrant status at Sculpturewalk started with a trip to the sunny south.

“We were travelling in the Domini-can Republic a couple of years ago and were really taken with some metal horse sculptures there. Of course, shipping them back was prohibitively expensive, so I though to myself, ‘I’ll see about making my own once we’re home!’” She did, and ‘Rusty’ was created.

Mueller talked with a welder friend, invested in a unit, and then went scrounging for material from family, neighbours and friends. “It took some time, but for a rst e ort I’m pretty pleased,” she says with a laugh. “He seemed to build himself, almost.”

As she should be. e nearly life-size sculpture is an amalgamation of scavenged and donated parts. Steel plates of course, but also chains, rollers, coils, sprockets and metal strapping too. Deliber-ately using o set angles occasion-ally, splashes of red metal plate and openings throughout, Mueller’s

familiarity with horses has ‘Rusty’ classically posed. Head down with one forelock and hoof raised and bent, it is a thoughtfully consid-ered, dynamic sculpture.

Having nished her second metal horse sculpture – salvaged from an old truck abandoned in the Chilco-tin – a ectionately named Chevy, Mueller is ready to tackle her other artistic love in reclaimed metal.

“Next up is a grizzly bear, de nite-ly,” she says with enthusiasm. “My grizzly paintings are all about us-ing bold strokes to depict the wild-ness and majesty they possess. Of course, painting and sculpting are di erent, but the general intent is to create a pleasing work, whether with acrylics or salvaged metal bits and pieces.”

With ‘Rusty’, the relatively neophyte sculptor impresses. Cleverly com-posed, imposing and stylish, Muel-ler’s initial o ering will please view-ers of all ages, horse lovers or not.

Hellman Canoe and Kayak/ Nelson BCCanoeing and Kayaking have been a passion of mine for most of my life. I remember as a small child being fascinated by canoes and kayaks. I taught myself how to paddle from books and lms and was soon going on little adventures on the streams and lakes of Manitoba. I developed my skills and soon I was going on multi day adventures into the wilderness.

Over the years I took more paddling courses and began teaching. I eventually became a master instructor.

Canoeing and kayaking have been a means of transportation that have enabled me to see parts of Canada that very few people have seen, but they have been much more than that. They have become a way of de ning myself, a way of connecting to nature and a way of being in touch with my spirit.

I love to share my passion for paddling with people. Opening my canoe and kayak shop has been a dream come true. It is a privilege to talk about boats and paddling with so many great individuals.

And this is a special time in history to be alive. We are in the early minutes of a whole new day in human history. The Birth of the internet as public domain in 1993, the beginning of a New Millennium in 2000, the conjunction of the Winter Solstice Sun with the Galactic Center… each serves as a signpost. There are many reasons to feel grateful to be here. Yes, humanity also has many challenges to overcome. Thanks to modern technology and the communications aspect of it especially, more people are more aware of the problems we face than ever before. Modern science and technology have brought us so much to be able to collectively rise above survival. Yet, ironically both are also major contributors to bringing us to the very brink where our very survival is at stake. This includes all species of life on our precious planet. Although the majority of humanity has lost touch with the natural rhythms and cycles of nature, they have not lost touch with humanity. The Sun’s cycle is deeply woven into our individual and collective psyche. How could it be otherwise? This direct relationship with the Sun’s light is the basis of photosynthesis and there is strong evidence to support that the principle upon which this process rests is not solely linked to planet growth. The same can be said of the Moon’s cycle. The in uences of the Sun and Moon are the foundation and all the other planets play key archetypal roles as well. Solstice is a reminder not only of our intimate relationship with nature, both that which we experience on earth, but also that with cosmic nature. In other words, we live on a planet which is part of a larger cosmic reality beginning with the Sun, Moon and Earth and extending to the solar system. Incidentally, the Full Moon in Capricorn occurs on June 23 at 4:32 am PDT. Due to its close approach to earth in its elliptical cycle it has been dubbed a ‘Super Moon’. The other reason it is a Super Moon is because it will form aspects to all of the far planets from Jupiter out over the course of the day. Expect an emotional ride before the day is done.

Faster Internet service and a rst time look at Optik TV is coming down the wire for residents in the City of Trail.

Telus announced a $6 million invest-ment in Trail in 2013 to improve its com-munications infra-structure to 95 per cent of city.

“Ultimately, what this means is that residents and busi-nesses in Trail will soon be linked to the most advanced communications in-frastructure o ering the best speeds and Internet-based ser-vices available,” said Lisa Sauve, Telus me-dia relations.

Sauve said that current service rates

will not change as a result of the up-grades, though cus-tomers will notice faster service, and access to new tech-nology as it evolves.

“ e last major upgrade was com-pleted in 2009,” said Sauve.

e other com-munications giant in the area, Shaw Cable, isn’t being le in the dust, because in May the company issued a promise to expand its service to Trail in a letter addressed to city council.

A two-year long -bre connection proj-ect from Alberta to the West Kootenay was recently com-pleted and upgrades to its hub site in Cas-tlegar are underway.

What this means to area residents is the addition of tele-vision channels, in particular Spokane stations; increased Internet speed; and ‘potentially’ home phone service avail-able in the late fall.

“ ese enhance-ments are the result of $4 million work of investment Shaw has made,” said Je Bray, manager BC Shaw communications.

KELOWNA - The BC Coroners Ser-vice has confirmed the identity of a man who died following an airplane crash near Crawford Bay on June 12, 2013.

He was Anthony Arnold (Tony) Qui-bell, aged 53, of Nel-son.

Mr. Quibell was the pilot and sole oc-cupant of a Cessna

Skymaster 337 which took off from Nelson airport at about 1:30 p.m. on June 12 for a flight to Saskatch-ewan.

The plane was re-ported missing later that evening when it had failed to arrive at its destination.

Early the next morning, the wreck-age of the plane was spotted in a heavi-ly treed area at the 6,500-foot level of a mountain near

Crawford Bay. Mr. Quibell was

deceased at the scene. The BC Coro-

ners Service and the Transportation Safe-ty Board continue to investigate this death.

The family of Mr. Quibell has been no-tified of his death. On behalf of fami-ly members, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

A silver tea ser-vice and grandma’s famous strawberry shortcake is on the menu for this year’s N e i g h b o u r h o o d Grans to Grans fund-raiser.

The 20-member group is hosting a Strawberry Tea fund-raiser, Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the Trail United Church. Ad-mission is $4.

Neighbourhood Grans to Grans is a group of women from Greater Trail who work together with the Stephen Lewis Foundation to raise awareness for Afri-can grandmothers whose children have died of AIDS, and are left to tend to their grandchildren.

“We are going to have a formal ser-vice this year and use silver tea sets,” said member Joan McK-enzie.

“We will have serv-ers pouring tea and

coffee and members whipping up real cream to top the homemade cake,” she added.

This year, the Grans have pulled out their vintage jew-elry to add sparkle to the group’s annual fundraiser.

“We have a lot of jewelry that isn’t be-ing worn anymore,” said McKenzie.

“People want to get rid of it, but it is very beautiful so we are going to sell it for a great cause.”

McKenzie wit-nessed the tragedy of HIV in West Africa

first hand when she volunteered to work in Ghana in 1988-89.

“I was there when the AIDS pandemic was just starting and it was so sad for the grandmothers,” she recalled.

“They were mourning the loss of their children to AIDS, while raising their grandchildren, many who were also HIV positive.

“These women are just so very, very spe-cial,”

The Stephen Lewis Foundation ensures that 90 per cent of funds raised go di-

rectly to commu-nity-based organi-zations in Africa that are working to turn the tide of AIDS by provid-ing care and sup-port to women, orphans, grand-mothers, and peo-ple living with HIV and AIDS.

According to the Foundation, 15 million chil-dren under the age of 18 have been or-

phaned by AIDS.Since 2003, the

Stephen Lewis Foun-dation has raised more than $50 mil-lion dollars and funded over 700 initiatives with 300 community-based organizations in the 15 African countries hit hardest by the pandemic.

names

Beaverdell has an odd origin: the name and townsite are com-bined from Beaverton and Rendell, twin cit-ies rst mentioned in the Boundary Creek Times of March 18, 1899: “Beaverton is already on the market and another townsite is to be surveyed at the junction of Beaver Creek and the West Fork [of the Kettle River].”

e newspaper identi ed the latter townsite by name on May 3: “R. Smailes, manager of the rm of Rendell and Co., has become associ-ated with Mr. Bell in the ownership of this property. e town is to be known as Ren-dell in honour of G. Arthur Rendell, se-nior member of the rm of Rendell and Co.”

However, George Arthur Rendell (1861-1935), a Green-

wood and Boundary Falls merchant, didn’t seem to have much to do with his name-sake town, as he was more concerned with promoting the edg-ling railway point of Eholt, where he was also postmaster.

For two years, Bea-verton and Rendell were bitter rivals (and warring factions with-in Beaverton disputed pre-emption rights) until they nally gave up and teamed up.

e Phoenix Pi-oneer of August 10, 1901 announced: “ e owners of the two townsites of Bea-verton and Rendell, adjoining each other on the west fork of the Kettle River, have decided wisely to combine their inter-ests, the amalgamated place to be herea er known as Beaver-dell — a combination of both the former names.”

Oddly, the Beaver-ton post o ce, which

opened November 1, 1900, wasn’t renamed Beaverdell until May 1, 1905.

e more likely is John Gordon Billings (1877-1963), secre-tary of the Yale Co-lumbia Lumber Co., which established a sawmill there about 1903. Billings came to B.C. from Ontar-io and worked with the Genelle family, West Kootenay’s lead-ing lumber barons (we’ll get to the place named for them later in this series).

It’s unclear when the area actually be-came known as Bill-ings, but the earliest mention yet discov-ered in the Grand Forks Gazette of Oc-tober 21, 1909 re-ferred to “the huge

Yale-Columbia saw-mill at Billings.” e mill operated until 1924.

A less likely name-sake, suggested by Grand Forks pioneer Ernest Spraggett, is Frederic Billings (1868-1915), a part-ner in the Vernon law rm of Billings and Cochrane and solici-tor for the Kettle Val-ley Railway.

On an episode of Gold Trails & Ghost Towns about the Co-lumbia and Western Railway, host Bill Barlee suggested the area was named for Billings, Montana — in turn named a er Northern Paci c Rail-way president Freder-ick H. Billings (1823-90) — but this seems less likely still.

e name survives in Billings Road. ere’s also a Billings Road at Brouse, south of Nakusp, where the Yale Columbia Co. had another mill.

Smoking bans on all company property both indoors and out-doors should be a vis-ible part of a compre-hensive non-smoking policy in Canadian workplaces, accord-ing to a new Con-

ference Board of Canada report. Addi-tional measures, such as smoking cessation programs, would also help employees to quit smoking.

Currently, 19 per cent of Canadian or-ganizations respond-ing to a Conference Board of Canada survey ban smoking from their property altogether.

Between 2008 and 2011, the City of Nelson received $1.6 million in fund-ing from the initia-tive. Residents can see what sort of local projects the cash was earmarked for, by vis-iting fcm.ca/home/issues/infrastructure/federal-gas-tax-fund.

Dooley points out that not only is the gas tax fund an effort that was successfully lobbied for by FCM members, it’s also in-dexed to grow every year along with the rate of inflation — a move that will earn the city hundreds of thousands of extra dollars in years to come.

The FCM’s An-nual Conference is a chance for municipal leaders to learn from experts and their peers, connect with their municipal col-leagues across Cana-da, and influence fed-eral decision-making on critical issues that affect municipalities.

In the year’s federal budget, the govern-ment announced it would invest $50 bil-lion over the next 10 years to build better local roads, bridges and water systems. By taking part in the conference, delegates were able to find out how their communi-ties can access new federal infrastructure funding and help.

ness can now leave their fold-out maps at home. GeoBC has created a series of free, high-resolution topographical maps designed for viewing on mobile devices.

GeoBC’s popular Terrain Resource In-formation Manage-ment (TRIM) base map series has been redesigned to enable the GPS georeferenc-ing functionality as-

sociated with mobile devices and allow us-ers to zoom into small areas of the new maps without compromis-ing detail.

More than 7,000 free maps cover-

ing the province (at a scale of 1:20,000) are now available as downloadable PDF files through Geo-BC’s Base Map Online Store or through its popular KML viewer

(with TIFF versions coming soon).

The maps feature elevation contours, roads, railways, air-ports, transmission lines, population cen-tres, built-up areas,

municipal and region-al boundaries, lakes, waterways, wetlands, wooded areas, trails, campgrounds, coast-lines, parks, protect-ed areas, place names and local landmarks.

The partners in the Waneta Expan-sion Project - Fortis Inc., Columbia Power and Columbia Basin Trust, are pleased to announce to a special community day to celebrate the project this Sunday.

The Waneta Ex-pansion Project Com-munity Day will take place at the project office site just past the Trail Airport on Sun-day, June 23, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Activities will include information-al displays, children’s activities, entertain-ment, food and re-freshments and tours

of the construction site. An official open-ing to the day’s events will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Tours will run throughout the day; buses will transport tour participants from the office site to the construction site for a walking tour of the project. Tour participants must pre-register by 4 p.m. Friday, June 21 by calling 250-304-6037. Closed-toe, flat foot-wear is required for tours. Tours are open to children accompa-nied by an adult. Chil-dren must be over 10 years old and 121 cm (48 inches) tall.

for downstream wa-ter uses such as irri-gation, sh, tourism and energy.

Florio Vassilakakis is about to drive, chip and putt for a most worthy cause. e Castlegar business-man and golf enthu-siast is gearing up for a taxing, if rewarding day full of golf.

During the month of June, golf pro-fessionals, sta and members will golf from sunrise to sun-

set to support those living with ALS. On June 24, Florio, member of Castlegar Golf Club will golf as many holes as possi-ble to raise awareness and funds for the ALS Society of B.C.

Castlegar Golf Club is one of 40 golf courses located across B.C. partici-pating in the PGA of B.C. Golfathon for ALS and one of 43 courses participating

in the event nation-ally.

Vassilakakis has done this before, swinging from dawn until darkness over-took his e ort, get-ting in as many holes as he could.

Says Donald Mi-yazaki, Executive Director of the PGA of BC; “ e PGA of BC is proud to sup-port the ALS Society of British Columbia through the annual

PGA of BC Golfa-thon for ALS. Funds raised through the e orts of our golf professionals have helped thousands of patients and family since its inception in 2005. We are excited to see the program grow, year a er year and look forward to contributing towards the ght against this deadly disease.”

Amyotrophic Lat-eral Sclerosis (ALS

), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal neurode-generative disorder that a ects the per-son’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles result-ing in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere; typically the person is immo-bilized within two to ve years of the ini-tial diagnosis. ere is no known cause

or cure yet, but there is hope through the ALS Society of BC.

Castlegar’s Con-certs in the Park summer season opened with Trail’s Maple Leaf Band on Wednesday, June 12.

After the singing of O Canada, the Band stepped into lively marching tunes with influences from English and French traditions. After that, the band arrived at the beginning of Ca-nadiana with full-out blown traditional Ca-nadian folk songs.

With interesting musical history les-sons spiced into in-troductions of each tune, band leader Joe Fouco (pictured in bottom photo at right) explained the musical tradition or journey that songs had traveled before arriving in the beau-tiful surroundings of Kinnaird Park to be played by 25 smart-ly uniformed, adept musicians.

With full brass section, upright bass and rockin’ Ludwig drums, exciting ren-ditions of sheet music were bound to jump right off the music stands. The audience was not disappoint-ed, nor, it seemed, the players from a couple of baseball games be-ing played in the park just next door, that a live marching band was their entertain-ment as well.

With the sun set-ting between the trees perfectly lighting the park, dog walkers and their handlers, the dogs, suddenly appeared everywhere guiding their com-panions to the heart of the entertainment, seeming not wanting to miss out that beau-tiful almost summer night.

Organizers hope to see you there ev-ery Wednesday this summer at 7 p.m. It would be a shame to miss out.

International Fund For Animal Welfare

(Marketwired - June 17, 2013) - Two male Grizzly bear cubs named Blair and Terry, who were or-phaned in British Co-lumbia’s Kootenay’s in the fall of 2012, are on the road back to freedom.

e cubs were or-phaned in October when they were eight months old a er their mother came into con ict with humans and was killed. ey were rescued and raised in captivity and are now ready to be released close to their home range.

e bears have spent the last seven months at the North-ern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS - www.wildlifeshelter.com) rehabilitation centre where they were raised in large enclosures with very limited human con-tact until they were old enough, strong enough and had the

skills to be released back to the wild. ey will travel by road from Smithers to an area outside of Castlegar inside in-dividual culvert traps on a atbed truck. Each will be tted with a satellite col-lar and released on June 18, 2013 into a remote area away from human activity and monitored for 18 months.

e rescue, trans-port and release of the Grizzlies is part of a unique coop-erative pilot project between the Interna-tional Fund for An-imal Welfare (IFAW - www.ifaw.org), the Northern Lights Wildlife Society (NLWS - www.wild-lifeshetler.com) and the British Columbia Ministries of Envi-ronment, and Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

e project will study whether releas-ing orphaned griz-zlies is viable. is is the fourth time such

a release has tak-en place. Two bears were released in July of 2008, two in the summer of 2009 and four in the summer of 2011.

“So far, eight griz-zly cubs have been re-introduced to the wild as part of this pilot project,” said Angelika Langen of NLWS. “It’s our hope that this work will help to save even more grizzlies.”

“Tracking the movements of the grizzlies using satel-lite collars is provid-ing vital information on the movements of the bears,” said John Beecham, bear spe-cialist with IFAW.

“It’s a key part of the project that helps us to scienti cal-ly validate whether what we’re doing is working.”

Human-bear con- ict is an ongoing concern in areas like the Kootenay’s, and the reason why these two bears were or-phaned in the rst

Rehabilitating or-phan bear cubs is viewed by IFAW as a more sustainable and humane alternative than killing the bears outright. Similar bear rehabilitation proj-ects are being sup-ported by IFAW in Russia and India.

Nelson’s second an-nual Elephant Moun-tain Literary Festival, July 11 to 14, was re-cently awarded major project support from the Columbia Koote-nay Cultural Alliance, along with nancial assistance from the Youth Grants Pro-gram of the Columbia Basin Trust.

“With the Festival only three weeks away, we were very pleased to receive these votes of con dence in our programming,” said Lynn Krauss, Festival Director.

e CKCA ap-proved a $10,000 major projects grant in support of over-all Festival activities, while the CBT Youth Grant will help cover costs for the Festival’s youth-led writing workshop on Satur-day, July 13, focusing

on spoken word po-etry.

Among the au-thors and publishers appearing at next month’s festival are novelist M.G. Vas-sanji, twice winner of the Giller Prize, Camilla Gibb, whose novels include the Trillium Award-win-ning Sweetness in the Belly, and Terry Fal-lis, whose novel e Best Laid Plans won the Stephen Leacock Medal for humor and the 2011 CBC Canada Reads competition.

Meanwhile, Sel-kirk College last week announced the in-structor for their in-troductory creative writing credit course in Nelson which will take place the week prior to and the week following the Festi-val. All three of B.C.’s Interior mountain colleges will be o er-ing at Selkirk’s Tenth

St. campus in Nelson two-week intensive credit courses in con-junction with the Fes-tival. College of the Rockies will present a course in creative non ction, with an online portion June 26 to July 5, and a classroom portion July 8 to 12.

Instructing for Sel-kirk next month will be Natalie Morrill, a UBC creative writing grad student who has published both ction and poetry in a range of literary magazines, as well as winning the Alberta Magazine Publishers’ Associa-tion 2013 Showcase Award for Fiction.

Other authors to appear at the literary festival include Ver-

non poet, ction writ-er and musician John Lent, and Quebecois graphic novelist Pas-cal Girard.

Invited publish-ers include Harbour Publishing’s Howard White, the new owner of troubled Vancou-ver press Douglas & McIntyre, and a poet and non ction author in his own right.

Also expected are Kirstin Cochrane, ex-ecutive publisher of McClelland & Stew-art Doubleday Cana-da, along with Tracy Hurren, managing

editor of Montreal’s Drawn & Quarterly publishers, who spe-cialize in graphic nov-els and cartoons.

Besides readings and talks, festival events will include an opening gala fea-turing several local writers, as well as an opportunity for fes-tival-goers to pitch their manuscript to a literary agent.

Summer is here and so are the mos-quitoes. Mosquitoes are more than a nui-sance; some carry West Nile virus, a disease that is spread from infected birds to humans through mosquito bites.

Any activity that prevents mosqui-toes from biting or breeding can help to reduce the risk of becoming infected with West Nile virus.

e West Nile vi-rus (WNv) was rst detected in B.C. in the South Okanagan during the summer of 2009.

To date there have been three human cases of WNv ac-quired in our prov-ince - all of which have been in the Okanagan. Last year, several parts of the Canada and the U.S. saw signi cant increases in West Nile virus activity.

“We would like to remind residents to take steps both here at home and when travelling to avoid mosquito bites this summer,” said Jen-nifer Jeyes, Commu-nicable Disease Spe-cialist with Interior Health.

“While the risk of becoming seriously ill from WNv infec-tion is low for many people, it is higher for some such as the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

It is important to remember there are preventative steps that everyone can take in order to re-duce the risk of in-fection.”

following tips: • Use mosquito re-

pellent. Apply mos-quito repellent to ar-eas of exposed skin. Check the product label for instruc-tions on proper use. Repellents contain-ing DEET are safe for those over six months of age when used according to the directions on the label. DEET-free products are avail-able, but may not provide long-lasting protection. View the HealthLinkBCFile on DEET (link be-low) for guidelines on how frequently to apply repellent.

• Wear protective

clothing. If you are in an area with lots of mosquitoes, wear loose tting, light coloured, full-length pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Avoid perfumes, soaps, hair care products, and lotions with o-ral fragrances.

• Avoid outdoor

activities at dusk and dawn. is is the time of day that the mosquito species that can carry WNv are most active.

• Install screens

on windows. Screens will help prevent mosquitoes from coming indoors.

• Prevent mosqui-

to breeding around your home.

It doesn’t take much time or water for mosquitoes to develop from eggs into adults.

Anything that can

hold water can be a mosquito breed-ing area. Identify and remove poten-tial breeding areas on your property - empty saucers under owerpots; change water in bird baths twice a week; unclog rain gutters; drain tarps, tires, and oth-er debris where rain water may collect; and install a pump in ornamental ponds or stock them with sh.

Stagnant backyard pools can be a big source of mosqui-toes and should be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth.

B.C. and Interior

Health are on the watch for West Nile virus. Surveillance programs include reporting dead birds from the corvid fam-ily (crows, ravens, magpies, and jays). ese birds are more likely than others to die from West Nile virus.

Members of the public are encour-aged to report dead corvid birds using the BC Centre for Disease Control Dead Bird Reporting page: http://westnile.bccdc.org/.
