SWIM SCHOOLS..what to look for when choosing a swim schoolTeaching your child to swim and be water safe is one of the most important jobs you will ever undertake as a parent. Every baby/toddler should be given the opportunity to learn as early as possible in life, without the use of arti fi cial buoyancy aids such as armbands/discs, swim seats, fl oatati on jackets or any other form of buoyancy aid. In other words they should be ‘free’ in the water, without the hin-drance of such aids, able to develop their natural swimming abiliti es with the right training. Babies and toddlers need to be able to show you what they are capable of, by being allowed to swim unaided from day one…..all you need is the right class….

Looking for a good baby/toddler swim school? Below you will fi nd useful informati on about selecti ng the best one for you……

1. Teacher in the water at all ti mes - the teacher should be close by at all ti mes to off er support, advice and encouragement.

2. No more than 6 pupils per class - any more and you may not get the att enti on you deserve.

3. Structured classes where new skills are taught every week - avoid those where nursery rhymes are the focus - your baby won’t learn much and you may as well sit baby in the bath and sing nursery rhymes to them!!

4. Not all baby swim schools are the same - do your research before you commit to a course - some are just fun based - some are com-mitt ed to teaching really useful stuff to you and your baby/toddler. Please go and watch a class relevant to the age of your baby before you book to see if they are off ering what you are looking for. This also enables you to see the pool, changing areas and parking arrange-ments.

Things to check out:

a. Do they off er a comprehensive water safety training programme for all ages?

b. Do they allow you to make up missed classes on alternati ve days?

c. Are the babies allowed to swim unaided from the fi rst class?

d. Are the babies kept busy for the durati on of the class or are there long periods of playti me?

Above all, aim to have fun with your child in the water. Swimming is a great acti vity that all the family can enjoy and a skill that may one day save their life.

Established for 12 years, the Humpty Dumpty Club brings a

wealth of experience to teaching children to enjoy music with

their parents using a fabulous range of props, puppets and

musical instruments. All of our team have worked within the

club virtually from the outset and create a happy environment

in which the children learn whilst having fun and provide the

parents with a varied programme over the course of the term.

Our Autumn term starts mid September and we have classes

every morning in Tunbridge Wells, Groombridge, Wadhurst,

Hildenborough and Sevenoaks. Classes are suitable for children

Monty’s truly is unique…and this is confirmed again and again by mums and nannies who join Monty’s having attended other music groups. Some comment on the warmth and atmosphere, some on the professionalism (“why isn’t Monty’s on TV?) and some on the quality and range of the props and instruments but they all seem to agree that the highly colourful and visual element of children’s theatre in each Monty’s session is exceptional. To delight a child, you must be able to enter their world and light their imagination and at Monty’s Music, entertainment is the key! Once a child is enthralled, they will learn the most in the best way possible and love the whole musical and movement experience! From the moment Monty is woken up and pops his head out of his kennel, the excitement begins. From little ones, as young as 6 months, eyes are glued to Monty and frequently little arms and hands start waving in anticipation! Every session has an exciting theme, and is

carefully structured to give a great variety of up-beat children songs, nursery rhymes and children’s classics. To keep the grown-ups from groaning (!), the variety of over 300 songs are used at Monty’s and every term you take home a new free CD containing over 50 songs. Add to this a huge diversity of instruments, a visual extravaganza (including dry ice machines, bubble machines, puppets and motorized props) stimulating movement, action rhymes and dance and the essential element of dramatic children’s theatre and you have something pretty special!

Class size is very small and in age-bands and as many of you will know, for some time the waiting lists have been somewhat lengthy! So GOOD NEWS! Rhythm Express runs music classes for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in Tunbridge Wells, Rusthall, Crowborough & Uckfi eld. The classes feature live music, and use a wide variety of props, puppets, instruments and age appropriate acti viti es to help youngsters explore the world of music. We are now booking for summer holiday sessions. There are mixed age group sessions for children from walking to fi ve years, and also baby only classes for babies up to pre-walkers. Come along and enjoy our fantasti c props and puppets, have fun singing old favourites and learn some new songs too! Dance Academy was established by Margie Rice in 2008 and off ers various classes for all ages at all levels of training. Two dance companies within the school means that children have the opportunity to perform in various open spaces and theatres. With a team of specialist teachers, the students are taught at the highest level whether it be RAD ballet or “proper” street jazz classes. A boys’ only class in hip hop encourages boys to take part as well from a fresh athleti c approach. The school organises annual theatre trips which reinforces the students’ experience of dance and theatre.

This year we are running a fi ve day Musical Theatre summer school, from 26 – 30 July, 10am – 3pm daily. The course is being taught by four specialist teachers, all ex-professional performers. There will be a showcase performance for parents and friends to att end on Friday 30th July at 3pm.
