West Java has made astonish progress on the MICE in the year 2013-

2014, with Bogor coming as the second city which hosted the annual

MICE event in West Java, West Java Travel Exchange 2014 (JTX). And the

development of MICE in West Java will continue to the more promising

way. It will be backed up by the development of infrastructure to support

the mobility of MICE in West Java. Construction of Kertajati International

Airport in Majalengka planned to be completed in 2016. And in 2020

there will be a fast train or shinkansen that would connect Bandung -

Jakarta in just 37 minutes.

Other West Java destinations with promising MICE potential are building

up initiatives and strategies to build West Java as one MICE destination in

Indonesia.

With MICE players rising up to meet the new challenge, we now look

forward to another engaging year ahead, and with our West Java MICE

Planner we hope that decision makers will find it easier to make their

selections of MICE in West Java.

The existence of MICE in the tourism industry is still relatively new. This development characterized by increased activities in the form

of promotional exhibitions, seminars, workshops and even world-class musical performances up to the traditional art that is able to

absorb a lot of upper middle-class audience. West Java in recent years began to seriously develop MICE industry. With the West Java

MICE Planner book is expected to be a factor to capture business opportunities in the field of MICE services and its stakeholders, both

for local and national players. And creating job opportunities and development of human resources in MICE sector. MICE is a complex

activity and should be managed and planned properly because it is a high business area with expensive and heavy responsibility. That

led to the need for information of MICE events places and MICE operators or organizers. Hopefully West Java MICE Planner book

may serve to provide the latest information and give a positive contribution to the image of West Java tourism that worthy reckoned as

one of MICE destinations in Indonesia.

Testimonial West Java MICE Planner 2014-2015 xxForewordWest Java MICE Planner 2014-2015xx

Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) are a highly promising area of Indonesia's tourism industry that the government is keen to develop further through the Wonderful Indonesia campaign. According to The World Tourism Organization “the meeting industry has emerged over recent decades as an important contributor to national economies.” For the local economy, the MICE tourism industry has a major role to play as such tourists spend on average three times more than leisure tourists.

As a segment of the tourism industry, the MICE industry is reported to bring in multiple benefits to the national economy. One of the primary benefits of participating at MICE events is knowledge and technological transfers that will result in the human resource development. Hosting International MICE events in Indonesia will also convey positive image to wider audiences. The positive image brought by MICE events will attract more investors and tourists and eventually boost the overall tourism industry and national economy.

Indeed, MICE events contribute notably to the Gross Domestic Product as well as the brand awareness of destinations. As one of MICE destinations, West Java is beginning to gather attention with the establishment of supporting MICE facilities such as good access, infrastructures, various other tourist attractions and most importantly the readiness of the local people to be a good host and the certification of the human resources to be competitive in a global MICE industry. We believe this first edition of West Java Planner will be a handy and informative guideline for international MICE stakeholders and will strengthen the position of West Java as the top of mind MICE destination in Indonesia.

Other Native Indonesian ethnic groups such as Minangkabau, Batak, Malay, Madurese, Balinese, Ambonese and many other Indonesians who migrated to and settled in West Java cities can also be easily found. West Java urban areas also have a significant population of Chinese Indonesians.Islam is the largest religion, but other religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism are widely and freely practiced.

Languages Sundanese is the widely-spoken language in the province. In some areas near the southern borders with Central Java, Javanese is also spoken. The main language spoken in Cirebon and nearby areas (Majalengka, Indramayu, Sumber) is Cirebonese, a dialect of Javanese with Sundanese influence. Indonesian is widely spoken as a second language.

With MICE being the prominent highlight within the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, we all can look forward to a more fantastic

meeting service and pro-active measures in supporting MICE industry.

Place to stayThere is accommodation to suit every visitor to West Java. The capital city of Bandung and the main town in each region have international-class hotels ranging from modest two stars to luxury six star properties. International chains like Hyatt, Hilton, and Accor Group Hotel have established or managed properties in Bandung and other cities and regencies.

Working days Office hours start from 8 AM to 4 PM, or 9 AM to 5 PM. Lunch break occurs between 12 noon to 1 PM. Usually offices are closed on Saturdays, including government offices. Government office hours start at 8 AM and end at 4 PM.

Time Seven hours ahead of GMT and 15 hours ahead of U.S Standard Time.

Electricity Electric power supply is 220 volts in all cities and regencies. So be careful with your 110-volt electronic equipment. The sockets will only fit with two pins rounded-tip plugs (technically known as Type C, E, and F) or use adaptors. Most hotels and many restaurants in large cities provide internet connections or free Wi-Fi.

Weight and measurement West Java follows the metric system for weight and measurement.

TelecommunicationsLocal calls can be made from public phones using coins or prepaid card. International calls can also be made using prepaid card or at any Telkom office.

InsuranceVisitors are strongly advised to obtain adequate insurance cover before travelling to West Java.

ConductPublic behavior is important in West Java. Most Sundanese people refrain from displaying affection (i.e. embracing or kissing) in public. It would be appropriate for visitors to do the same.

GreetingsAlthough handshakes generally suffice for both men and women, some Muslim ladies may acknowledge an introduction to a gentleman with a nod of her head and smile. The traditional greeting resembles a handshake with both hands but without the grasp. The man offers both hands, lightly touches his friend's hands, than bring his hands back to his chest to mean, “I greet you from the heart”. The visitor should reciprocate the Salam.

Places of WorshipShoes must be removed when entering places of worship such as mosques and temples. Some mosques provide robes and scarves for female visitors. Taking photographs at places of worship is usually permitted but request for permission first, especially if you want to take pictures of the interior.

TippingMost hotels and restaurants levy a 10% - 21% service charge and 10% government sales tax on bills. Therefore, tipping is not customary. However, should you want to show your appreciation for good services, a small tip will do.

Do's & Don'ts

West Java (generally in Indonesia) has several traditions and customs and it is best if you know them beforehand. Some of them are:

· It is considered polite to make a phone call first before visiting.

· Usually drinks are offered to guests. It is polite to accept.

· When eating, receiving or giving something, always use your right hand. Right index finger should not be used to point a place, items or people. Use the right hand thumb and fold the remaining fingers to be more polite.

· Most Indonesian Muslims do not consume alcoholic drinks and pork. Hence, the tradition of proposing a toast to honor someone is not generally known.

Linggarjati Negotiation (15 November 1946 to 25

March 1947) Held in Kuningan, West Java, between Indonesia and

Netherlands parties with the purpose of discussing the status of

Indonesia's independence. This negotiation resulted in an

agreement that the Dutch recognized de facto Indonesian

territory. In this negotiations, Indonesia was represented by

Sutan Syahrir, the Netherlands was represented by a team called

the General Commission and chaired by Wim Schermerhorn

with members of HJ van Mook, and Lord Killearn of England to

act as a mediator in this negotiation.

MICE development in Indonesia has a long history. It traced back to the era when we struggle for Indonesian

independence.

MICE is a term for Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition. For Meeting and Conference which is actually already underway in

Indonesia since the Dutch colonial era. Starting from the negotiations held by the Indonesian and Dutch related to seizure of Indonesian

territory.

Renville Negotiation (December 8, 1947 to 17 January

1948) It was quite unique because it was held on the deck of a United

States' ship war as a neutral party, named USS Renville, which is

anchored in the port of Tanjung Priok, Jakarta. Indonesian

delegation led by Prime Minister Amir Syarifuddin Harahap. The

Netherlands Kingdom delegation led by Col. Abdulkadir

Widjojoatmodjo KNIL. The United States delegation was led by

Frank Porter Graham.

Roem-Royen Negotiation (14 April 1949 to May 7

1949) Its name is taken from the second delegation leader, Mohammad

Roem and Herman van Royen. The purpose of this meeting is to

resolve some of the issues regarding the independence of

Indonesia before the Round Table Conference in Den Hague in

the same year.

In Bogor Conference which held before the Asian-African

Conference, Indonesia was chosen to host the conference,

which is set to take place at the last week of April in 1955. The

President of Indonesia at that time, Soekarno, pointing Bandung

as the venue for the conference.

Asian-African Conference (18 April to 24 April 1955)

It was the first international conference held by Indonesia.

Located in Bandung, West Java followed by delegates from 29

countries representing more than half of the total population in

the world at that time. The purpose of this major conference is to

highlight the neutrality of countries participating to the ongoing

cold war and helped the independence movement for countries

in Asia and Africa which are still not independent at that time.

The historical record proves that Indonesia has always been

neutral and has a strategic position as a place to hold such a

meeting and international conferences. Not only Indonesia, but

West Java as the place where the first Asian-African International

conference was held, since the first has sufficient potential to

facilitate meetings and conferences. Between every meetings

and conferences that occurred in Indonesia, West Java was asked

many times as the host. And the locations are now become

historical tourist destination like Linggarjati Building and Museum

of Asian-African Conference.

Times have changed and the world is experiencing a new trend of MICE development. It takes more than just a potential to repeat the

history when West Java is one of the strategic locations to hold international conferences. Some industrial cities in West Java are wide

enough to become a target market, supported by the tourism destinations that offer natural attractions, culture, and history as an incentive

destination. Not only that, in the years ahead there will be a significant development in West Java, especially in the field of transport and

infrastructure. Increasingly easy accessibility, supported with adequate facilities and hospitality of human resources, are important points

that will make West Java as one of the flagship regional MICE destinations in Indonesia.

Mount Papandayan i s a comp lex stratovolcano, located in Garut Regency, in the Southeast of Bandung City in West Java, Indonesia. This interesting place lies in the border of Bandung and Garut regency, about seventy kilometers to the south of Bandung and about 19.25 km from Garut. Papandayan Mountain is one of the natural wonders in West Java, one of the most spectacular volcanoes in this province. Mount Papandayan’s crater is probably one of the most spectacular mountain scenes in Java Island.

· We should always be cautious for the soil which is

very unstable.

· There is a lake in Papandayan Mountain called

Telaga Warna. This lake has a greenish color and

gives out a strong gas stench.

· You should keep in mind the importance of a

guide due to the mountain's active status. This

mountain erupted for some time, leaving the

surrounding burnt by the hot steam it emits.

Though the damage made by the eruption turned

the view of the surrounding in to a unique and

rare to see.

· Continued to the top, we need to walk through

the puff of sulfur smokes. Wear your mask so you

do not need to breathe the sulfur in your lungs, it's

not only bad for your health but the smell is also

bad.

Kampung Naga

Located in the area of Neglasari Village, Salawu District, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia.Kampung Naga is a village which is inhabited by a community with a very strong tradition of holding the remainder ancestors. The differences are visible when compared with other communities outside Kampung Naga. The community is living in the framework of an atmosphere in a traditional simplicity and environmental wisdom.

Kampung Naga is located not far from the main road that connects with the city of Garut Tasikmalaya. Villages are located in a fertile valley, with the boundaries, in the West Village by Naga forest. The forest is sacred because it is located in the ancestral cemetery. In the south is the rice fields, and in the north and east are surrounded by river Ciwulan, which the source of water comes from Mount Cikuray in Garut. The distance from the town of Tasikmalaya to Kampung Naga is approximately 30 kilometers, while the distance from the city of Garut is 26 kilometers. To reach Kampung Naga from Garut or Tasikmalaya, people must climb down the ladder on the wall (Sundanese: sengked) to the bank of the river Ciwulan with the slope about 45 degrees with a distance of approximately 500 meters. Then through the paths into Kampung Naga.

For those who haven't had the chance to visit Papandayan Mountain, you will see dried and

burned trees and also smokes coming out of the ground and from the mountains cracked

wall. The top of the mountain are easily reached, because there are special road leading to

the crater, but we are obliged to ask for a guide to lead us to the top. There are also other

natural phenomenon that we usually encounter during the trip such as gas burst

phenomenon, bubbling mud pools, steam vents, and sulfur deposits. Tourists can walk

across the crater and view bubbling mud pools phenomena, steam vents and sulfur deposits.

Above the crater are an elfin forest and several meadows with Javanese edelweiss —this

flower only grows on certain places and certain height—which most people would call it

“the immortal flower” due to its nature which never withered and has its own signature

aroma. As we reached the top of the mountain, our feelings would be filled with joy and

happiness like we were above the clouds for the moment.

Papandayan Mountain is the best choice for your one-day trip both with families or for incentive trips. We can go from the bottom to the top

and then comes back down only within a day. So if you start early in the morning from Bandung, reached the top by midday, and then comes

back at noon. It's truly a worthy trip for only 2,665 meters above sea level and known among the hikers as “the mountain for beginners”.

The view at Tegal Alun, around 200 meters below the summit of Mt. Papandayan. Famous for a breathtaking view of its meadow edelweiss, the place is frequently used as a camp site for hikers to rest before making the final climb up to the summit.

Most hikers climb to enjoy the exotic scenery of the Hutan Mati (Death Forest) in Papandayan Mountain. The forest vegetation has been burned away by the flow of lava from past eruptions.

Sundanese beliefs. Ancient Sundanese religion was influenced

by animism and dynamism that revered the spirit of the

ancestors as well as unseen natural power identified as Hyang,

and it is also influenced by Hindu. Since ancient times

Sundanese are agricultural community that revered natural

power that give fertility in plants and animals, this natural divine

power is identified as Nyi Pohaci Sanghyang Asri.

The Seren Taun rituals are different and varied among each

village in West Java; however the main ritual is the procession

to presenting the rice to community leader. This rice is put into

main list (rice barns) and secondary rice barns. The community

leader later gave mother of rice that already blessed to the

village's leaders to be planted in a next agriculture cycle.

Sintren played by a girl who is still a virgin, aided by the handler with the accompaniment of 6 traditional music instruments. In the development

of Sintren dance as an entertainment culture, it is then fitted with a companion of other dancers and comedian.

In Sintren show, the handler (puppeteer) often invites the Spirit of the Goddess Lanjar to get into the show. When the spirit of the Goddess

Lanjar successfully invited, then the Sintren dancer will look more beautiful and bring more agile and dazzling dance.

Sintren is a Javanese traditional dance performance, especially in Cirebon. This art is well known in the northern coast of West Java and Central Java, among others in Indramayu, C i r e b o n , M a j a l e n g k a , Jatibarang, Brebes, Pemalang, Banyumas Kuningan Regency, and Pekalongan. Sintren is known as a dance with mystical/magical elements that comes from Sulandono and Sulasih love story.

Merak dance is a traditional folk dance originating from Pasundan

land, West Java. This dance was created by Raden Tjetje Somantri in

1950s and it had been rearrange by Irawati Durban in 1965.

From its name, it clearly describes the dance that symbolize the

elegant of peacock movements. Merak dance is can be performed

solo or in groups. The dancers of this beautiful dance are wearing

scarf that perform the tail of the peacock with multicolor scenic tone.

Moreover, the dancers are also wearing the crown a la peacock head

crown. Merak dance is having delicate hand movements and it

follows by traditional ‘Gamelan’ music, that becomes the main

characteristic of this dance. Each movement in this dance is

meaningful and happy, that is why it sometime becomes the

welcome dance to greet the guest of honor in wedding ceremony.

Merak Dance is usually can be seen in special events such as

traditional ceremonies or official events as the opening act.

This dance is usually performed together with three or

more female dancers. To be able to watch this dance

performance, visitors can visit the Saung Anglung Udjo on Jl.

No. Padasuka. 118 Bandung where the Merak dance

performed regularly every week. Visitors can also learn

about this dance in the dance studio at Saung Angklung

Udjo.

Merak (peacock) is an animal with smooth fur and has his

head like a crown. The movement of Merak where he

blooms his tail feathers to attract female peacock has

inspired Tjetje R. Somantri to make this Merak dance.

Of the many dances created by Raden Tjetje Somantri,

maybe this Merak dance is the most popular dance in

Indonesia and abroad. No wonder the artists of Bali,

including Denpasar college students creating Manuk Rawa

dance which the concept and its movement are almost

similar to the Merak dance.

S I N T R E N D A N C E

Tari Merak or Dance of the Peacock is a female dance. Merak (Sundanese) means peacock and the choreography is inspired by the beautiful

movements of a peacock. The gestures of a peacock are beautifully blended together with the classical movements of the Sundanese dance

and thus making the dance a colorful expression of the proud peacock which is showing its beautiful feathers.

It sort of resembles another Indonesian favourite called Gado

gado but the spices that make up the peanut sauce as well as

some of the vegetables used are different. Lotek is usually

eaten with steamed rice or lontong, sticky cubes of rice that are

neutral in taste thus complementing the spiciness. It is

especially popular amongst ibu ibu (older ladies) for its healthy

qualities. Although the idea of eating raw vegetables with a

spicy sauce might seem foreign to foreigners (no pun

intended), it actually works very well. As long as the vegetables

aren't overcooked, its crispy bite offers what is needed for

coping with the spicy after taste of the peanut sauce.

Tahu Gejrot is a characteristic food from Cirebon, Indonesia. Tahu gejrot consists of fried tofu which was then cut into small pieces and eaten

with adequate amount of marinade sauce that is from blending brown sugar, vinegar, and sweet soy sauce. Usually served in small layah with

garlic and/or chili cut into pieces.

A traditional Sundanese vegetable dish that is both delicious and

nutritious goes by the name Lotek. It basically consists of several

vegetables such as tahu (tofu), cole, kangkung (waterspinach) and

taugé (beansprouts). It is added with a spicy peanut sauce and topped

with krupuk. The best way to eat the Lotek is to crush and sprinkle the

krupuk and mix the pieces with each spoonful of this saucy delight.

There are two versions of preparation. The first being the raw lotek

and the second being the steamed version.

Karedok is a raw vegetable salad in peanut sauce from West Java, Indonesia.[1] It is one of the Sundanese signature dish. It is made from cucumbers, bean sprouts, cabbage, legumes, Thai basil, and small green eggplant, covered in peanut sauce dressing

The typical Indonesian fruit rujak consists of slices of

assorted tropical fruits such as jambu air (water apple),

pineapple, raw mangos, bengkoang (jicama), cucumber,

kedondong, and raw red ubi jalar (sweet potato).

Sometimes Malang variants of green apple, belimbing, and

jeruk Bali (pomelo) are added. The sweet and spicy-hot

bumbu rujak dressing is made of water, gula jawa (palm

sugar), asem jawa (tamarind), ground sauteed peanuts,

terasi (shrimp paste), salt, bird's eye chili, and red chili

pepper. All of the fruits are sliced to bite-size, and put in the

dish. The bumbu rujak or thick sweet spicy rujak dressing is

poured on the fruit slices. An addition of sambal garam

powder (simple mixture of salt and ground red chilli) is put

on side as the alternative for those who love a salty taste for

their rujak.
