GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT NEWS:  

Sophomores:  Coming Up!  On Feb. 16th, the guidance department will be teaching classroom lessons on exploring careers.  Students will have the opportunity to take a career interest assessment and uncover career paths that may be suitable for them.  Students will also learn how to use the Naviance program.   Juniors:  Have you registered to take the SAT or ACT yet? If not, please review the handouts you received during our December College and Career Planning lessons to finalize and schedule your test dates.  Helpful information is also available in our College & Career Planning Toolkit which can be found on the high school homepage.  

Seniors: 

Please remember that your mid‐year, updated transcripts will be sent out to all the colleges, training programs, military branches, etc. to which you have applied so they can see how you are doing in your senior year.  Keep those grades up and be sure to study for 

your mid‐terms since they will see your exam grades as well! 

  Please update your Naviance account as you receive decisions from colleges. You also 

need to tell us where you plan to attend so if you have a made a decision, please click on "The college I will be attending is...."  Then we can celebrate your achievement by putting your name and college up on our guidance bulletin board!  

Do you plan to attend RCGC next fall?  If so, you must indicate that in Naviance ASAP. Students who need to take the RCGC placement exam will be scheduled to do so here at WDHS on Feb. 21st.  Also, be sure to check out the numerous scholarships available to RCGC students.  Go to www.rcgc.edu/scholarships for more info.   

Seniors who are eligible for the NJ STARS scholarship program will be invited to an important meeting on Feb. 12th during Homeroom to learn more about the advantages of this scholarship program. Eligible students will receive passes to attend.  

Be sure to check out all the scholarships listed in Naviance.  Log into your Naviance account, click on the Colleges tab, go to the bottom of the page, and click on Scholarship List.  You can also check out a list of scholarships specifically for WDHS 2018 grads.  Go to the high school home page, click on the Guidance tab, and then Local Scholarships and Awards.  Don't miss out on many opportunities to help fund your future!

DECA NEWS:  

 

New Jersey DECA 

Invitation to Judge at the State Leadership Conference 

 

This letter serves as an invitation to act as a judge at the DECA State Leadership Conference (SLC).  With nearly a 70‐year history, DECA has impacted the lives of more than ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals since it was founded in 1946. The strong connection with our organization has resonated into a brand that people identify as a remarkable experience in the preparation of emerging leaders and entrepreneurs.  This year’s state conference is the second round of competition that our students will experience this year.  It will be held at Harrah’s Atlantic City, NJ from February 27 to 28.  There are various times throughout those two days that we are looking for judges.  You can sign‐up for one or more opportunities as they meet your availability: 

 

Reading and scoring student manuals in advance of the competition from the comforts of your home  February 27 (2pm‐@6pm)  Judging preliminary oral presentations  February 27 (6pm) –February 28 (2pm) Reading and judging student manuals – requires an overnight 

stay (room provided by DECA)  February 28 (7:45am‐3pm) Judging preliminary role plays  February 28 (7:45am‐6pm) Judging preliminary and final role plays

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT NEWS: 

New Jersey Brain Bee Competition 

West Deptford students have an opportunity to prove their brain power by competing 

in the 2018 New Jersey Brain Bee competition at Rutgers Medical School in 

Piscataway, NJ on Saturday, February 10. The Brain Bee is a live question and answer 

competition quizzing students about the human brain and central nervous system. All 

competition questions are derived from the book “Brain Facts” published by the Society of Neuroscience. 

This competition is open to any student in grades 9 through 12 and will be held from 10 am to 3 pm on 

Saturday, February 10. West Deptford will provide transportation to the event. In addition to the 

competition, the Medical School Neuroscience Faculty will present their research, provide hands‐on 

anatomical demonstrations of brains and spinal cords, and circulate among students during lunchtime 

answering questions. Students should take advantage of this unique opportunity. Advance registration by

MATH DEPARTMENT NEWS: 

There are two exciting Mathematics Competitions currently available to West Deptford High School students!  

1. Rowan University is hosting a seating of the American Mathematics Competition on Thursday, February 15th. Check‐in is from 4‐4:45 pm, with exam and Q&A to follow. This competitive exam is offered in two parts, one for students in grades 10 and below and one for students in grades 12 and below. A successful score on this exam could lead to an invitation to more prestigious competitions!

2. The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge will take place from March 2nd‐5th. Teams of 3‐5 will work to solve a single open‐ended, realistic, math modeling problem in a 14‐hour window. Scholarship prizes ranging from $1,000‐$20,000 are awarded to the winning teams!  For more information on either of these competitions, please contact your math teacher or department chair Mike Seeley!  

NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY NEWS:  

On Friday, February 9th at 7 pm at WDHS the National Art Honor Society would like to 

invite you to a special ceremony as they induct their 2018 members. These Students were 

selected because they exhibited the highest standards in the Visual Arts and met the strict criteria necessary 

to become a member.  The second year 2017 members will also be recognized as they have continued to 

uphold the highest standards in the Visual Arts.  

During the ceremony, there will be a keynote speaker and a special token for our graduating seniors.  

Following the Induction Ceremony, there will be a juried exhibit by NAHS members and Fine Arts students. 

Their work has been specifically selected to appear at this event. Potential students work will also be 

recognized. 

Refreshments will be served. 

Rehearsal will be held on Wednesday, February 7th at 5 pm in the auditorium.   All new and 

current members are required to attend.  

 

 

KEY CLUB NEWS: 

On Thursday, February 1st WDHS Key Club served up hope, smiles and 275 hot meals to those in need at Cathedral 

Kitchen in Camden.  The following Key Clubbers participated: (front row) Jamie Cesaro, Lindsay Barney, Hayley Axelrod,

NHS NEWS: 

The American Red Cross is making an urgent call for blood donations of all blood types to help combat a blood shortage after severe winter weather caused January blood bank donations to drop by the thousands. 

Please encourage your child to sign up to donate blood on Wednesday, March 14th during the school day at WDHS. Students must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 5'1" tall. Red Cross parent permission slip is required for 16 & 17‐year‐olds. Students should see Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Stuart or any NHS member for registration & permission slip. 

 

 

CLASS OF 2021 NEWS: 

Class of 2021 recently sold spirit wear, and we have a couple of pairs of sweatpants 

leftover because of a mix up with the order. They are $25 each, and they are size

PTO MEMBERSHIP NEWS: 

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

WEST DEPTFORD HIGH SCHOOL    West Deptford High School PTO would like to welcome you to the 2017‐2018 school year.  We extend an invitation to all parents to 

attend our meetings and get  involved.   Without parent participation, we will not be able  to provide  these great activities  for  the 

students.  Our meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the WDHS Media Center.  We meet the second Thursday of every other month.  Our first 

meeting is on September 14, 2017, and we will have an extra meeting on October 12, 2017, to welcome new members and prepare 

for Homecoming.  Additional meetings are November 16th, January 11th, March 8th and May 10th. 

The PTO works  to  raise  funds  for  several projects  throughout  the  year  ‐  refreshments  for Homecoming, Project Graduation and scholarships for deserving graduates.  For your child to be eligible for a PTO Scholarship, membership of the parent or guardian is required.  We also donate  and  help  WDHS  Clubs  and  Organizations  as  well  as  coordinate  the  Teacher Appreciation Breakfast.       

To provide these events for the students, we will be running a few fundraisers.  We are currently running our TV raffle package, and 

we will also have our annual Filomena’s Basket Auction and throughout the year a couple of Pat’s Pizza Nights.  We are relying on our 

parents to help support these events. 

 

Meeting dates, minutes and upcoming events will be posted on the school website calendar and posted on our Facebook page:  West Deptford High School PTO.  All upcoming events will be included in Dr. Gismondi’s  Friday Eagle Newsletters. It is a great opportunity  for you to volunteer as well as keep  informed as to what  is going on in our school.       

 

We encourage you to support and participate in your PTO by joining for a nominal membership fee of $10.00.  Membership in the 

PTO does not require attendance at PTO meetings or events, although all are welcome to attend.  Please return the bottom portion 

of this page, along with your membership fee, to school with your child.  Checks should be made payable to WDHS PTO.  If possible, 

please send your completed membership and ticket purchase forms with your child during the first week of school and drop off at the
