WEST Kirby Football Club are hoping to build on last season’s successes as they enter new territory.They ended the 2008-09 season as West Cheshire Division

One champions - for the third year in a row and also winners of the prestigious Cheshire FA Umbro Amateur Cup. At the start of the season they also triumphed in the West Cheshire League Bill Weight Memorial Cup.First team manager John Brett, assistant Graham Murphy

and physio Brian Bennett hope to continue this success as the Cheshire County FA representatives in the Northern Counties Senior Cup.The new season got underway on Saturday and the team

have a busy month of fi xtures with games at Cammell Laird Res, Halton, Newton and Maghull during August.West Kirby Football Club was founded in 1895, and play at Marine Park on Greenbank

Road in West Kirby. They are members of the West Cheshire League with the fi rst team in playing in division one and the reserve team in division two.We will keep you up to date with West Kirby FC news throughout the season.

Why do birds fl y south? Because it’s too far to walk

The ‘Credit Crunch’ and the downturn in the economy has forced many businesses within our region to reduce or restructure their workforces and, in some extreme cases, businesses have had to cease trading altogether. A Compromise Agreement is a legally binding agreement between you and your employer. Such

agreements are used, in a variety of circumstances, to set out the terms and conditions reached when a contract of employment is terminated. As well as redundancy, these agreements can also be used to settle employment disputes and tribunal claims, and even when individuals leave their job by mutual agreement.The agreement you have been offered should provide a full breakdown of the payments that you are

going to receive from your employer. It should indicate whether the payment offered takes into account money in lieu of your notice period, and any holidays that may be owed to you. It should also give you an indication as to whether any tax or national insurance is payable on the sum being offered to you. In return for the payment, your employer will be attempting to exclude you from being able to bring

claims against them as a result of the termination of your employment, in a court or in the Employment Tribunal. It is crucially important for you to know that by entering into the agreement you will be signing away your right to bring a claim against your employer. It is normal for the agreement to also include a number of other specifi c clauses. Your employer may

look to include such things as a confi dentiality clause, a clause that you will not make any derogatory statements about them and possibly certain other restrictive covenants. If these clauses are included then you will not be able to discuss the terms of your package or your employer’s business affairs with any other party, you will not be allowed to make any derogatory comments about your employer and there may be restrictions on your future employment. As the Compromise Agreement has the effect of turning your redundancy package into a ‘full and fi nal’

settlement of any claims that you may have against your employer, it is crucial that you take legal advice on the contents of the it and whether it offers you suffi cient compensation for losing your job. The agreement should confi rm that your employer will pay your legal advisor’s fees for providing the advice.

The Employment Rights Act 1996 states that you must receive advice from someone who is professionally qualifi ed to advise you on the contents of the agreement and that whoever advises you must sign the agreement confi rming that you have received the necessary advice.

We will advise you upon the terms of the agreement and consider whether the payment you are being offered is higher or lower than what you are entitled to under the law. It is often the case that an employer will offer a higher redundancy payment in return for an employee entering into an agreement, as the protection offered by the agreement to the employer is extremely valuable to them.

BIG crowds turned out for the official reopening of the West Kirby Marine Lake earlier this month.The refurbishment has taken place over

the last five months to strengthen the lake’s outer wall which was said to be a danger to walkers.The £750,000 repair scheme involved

raising the level by 10cm, resurfacing the walkway and tackling erosion on the embankment.The scheme was approved by Wirral

Council and largely funded by the Environment Agency. Ruthin-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering completed the work after the original contractor pulled out.On Saturday 1st August there was a big

celebration to mark the reopening, with

sailing and windsurfing demonstrations as displays by the RNLI.The 52 acre lake is totally enclosed,

mainly non-tidal, offering water sport activities for all to enjoy. Pivate craft can be admitted by purchase of daily lake licence, annual or seasonal licence.Reception opening times: Monday to

Sunday 9am - dusk.Courses are offered in sailing,

MUSIC maestro Sir Tim Rice was the special guest at a garden party hosted by Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Esther McVey.Sir Tim, who is a good friend of

Esther’s, came to Wirral to host a ‘Tims and Pimms Musical Night’. Music was provided by the award winning West Kirby Light Opera and the event was the fi rst of a new series of annual Summer Musical Events to be held on Wirral. “It was a wonderful community

night,”’ said Esther, ‘the sun shone and the music played. People brought their own rugs and chairs and camped out as canapés and Pimms were brought round.’

Q. I am very fair skinned and I am going on holiday to a hot country. I always burn, so should I have some sunbed sessions before I go to protect my skin?A. I would never advocate the use of

sunbeds. A suntan is the skins response to exposure to harmful radiation in order to protect itself. In short, a tanned skin is a damaged skin. If you are very fair skinned take sensible precautions – apply a very high factor sunblock at regular intervals, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours and wear a hat. If you want to go brown – fake it with a self-tan product. Either build up the fake tan gradually with a product applied daily or visit a professional therapist for fake tan treatment. Don’t forget that fake tan is purely cosmetic and

will not protect your skin from the sun.

Q. I have small unsightly red veins on my cheeks, how can I remove them?A. These small red veins are often called ‘thread

veins’ or ‘dilated capillaries’ and the ones that have a centre with ‘legs’ radiating out from the centre are called ‘spider naevi’ due to the fact they look like little red spiders! There are a variety of solutions to your problem. Masking them with a remedial camoufl age cream or green tinted concealer may be suitable. If this is not acceptable they can be successfully removed with either laser or short wave diathermy, which is also often called advanced electrolysis. Not everyone is suitable for these treatments so ensure that your qualifi ed therapist gives you a consultation prior to treatment. Prevention is always better than cure with

most skin problems so ask your therapist about measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of the formation of further red veins.

AUGUST can be a dull month in the garden as the spring and early summer fl owering shrubs and perennials are over and tree foliage can look a bit tired. With a bit of planning, you can have colour in the garden if you concentrate on fl owering

perennials and some shrubs. Flowering shrubs include such favourites as hydrangeas, Hypericum Hidcote with its shiny buttercup yellow fl owers, Lavatera, which fl owers for weeks in shades of white and pink and Buddleia, try the variety Black Knight with its deep purple fl owers.If you go for fl owers, there are many perennials that will reliably fl ower every year especially if

you have a sunny border. Campanula lactifl ora is tall with clusters of bell fl owers in white or pink. For something different and if you have slightly damp soil, consider Inula hookeri which will give you large, yellow delicately fringed daisy fl owers about 75cm (30ins) tall in July and August. Pair it with scarlet or deep pink Dahlias for a bright show of summer colour. Gypsophila or Baby’s Breath is an old cottage garden favourite with tiny button white fl owers on tall stems (75cm (30ins) which will give you an airy cloud of white. In the vegetable garden you should keep your, salads, tomatoes, beans and courgettes watered.

If you pick them regularly, they will continue to produce. Beans and peas will tend to stop producing if pods are allowed to mature. Late salads and radishes can be sown for cropping in autumn. Try some of the salad leaves for winter such as Land Cress which is similar in fl avour to watercress but easier to grow in fertile soil that does not dry out. Spinach can also be sown for winter and spring cropping again in rich fertile soil. August is a good time to clip hedges for the last time in the year. Lavender can also be clipped

back after fl owering for bushy growth next year. Remember not to cut back into wood where there is no green growth, as this will kill the plant. Lawns may well be looking tired after long dry spells but they will come back again after early

PUPILS from Calday Grange Grammar School entertained customers as Sainsbury’s celebrated their 140th year in business. They sang ‘Happy Birthday’ at the Upton store last month in a day of celebrations which raised over £1,000 for the RNLI at Hoylake.

STAFF at Sainsbury’s Upton Wirral have been raising money for the Ronald Mcdonald House Charity which will open latter this year at Arrowe Park Hospital. This will provide seven rooms for the parents of very poorly children to stay. They have raised over £2000 from various sponsored activities, including a walk through the Mersey Tunnel in July.

Wonderfully readable and very funny in parts.

DANIEL Lomax is making a name for himself in the high octane world of karting.After barely a season of TKM Extreme

class kart racing, 17-year-old Daniel has made giant strides.His home circuit is just a 15 minute drive

away, to the fabulous karting track at Hooton Park, near Vauxhall’s factory in Ellesmere Port.To a soundtrack of well over a hundred

engines zooming past at speeds of up to 70 mph, men, women and children in race suits and helmets feverishly add the fi nishing touches to their race-prepared karts, hoping to squeeze every last tenth of a second out of their lap times. From a myriad of awnings, vans, trailers, and marquees, competitors, friends, families and professional race teams from all over the north of England meet every second Sunday of the month.

Daniel, who lives in Hoylake, has been awarded several ‘Fastest Novice’ trophies but has now entered the senior ranks. “As I am no longer a novice, I don’t have to start from the back of the grid. It doesn’t mean I can’t end the race at the back of the grid, though,” he said. “You have to be very disciplined. It’s no

good putting your foot down and hoping for the best; you have to anticipate every bend and kerb in a clinically precise and smooth manner. It doesn’t always end up that way, especially in the crush for position on fi rst bend after the start.” The sport certainly has its dangers. “I

reckon everyone has had at least one intimate encounter with the tyre wall; I’ve had a few. Fortunately they are usually more forgiving for the driver than they are for the kart,” he added.

This popular circular walk will be led from Thurstaston Visitor Centre at 11am, with music provided by the Wirral Pipe Band. This scenic route takes you along the Wirral Way through Heswall, The Dales, The Dungeon and back along the Wirral Way. Marie Curie fundraiser Colette Byrne said: ‘This really is a beautiful walk, and

the money raised makes such a difference to the patients and their families. Our wonderful nurses simply couldn’t continue to provide the care they do without the kindness of the people taking part in this type of event’. This promises to be a great family day out and is the perfect opportunity to

remember loved ones. So pull on your walking boots and help raise much needed funds to support the Marie Curie Wirral Home Nursing service and the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool! going. Only 50% of this amount comes from the NHS, the rest is dependent on fundraising initiatives, such as the Thurstaston Walk. The hospice provides specialist medical and nursing care, with the expert help of multi-disciplined healthcare professionals, to over 1,120 local cancer patients each year.
