PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe proposed action of the I-29/I-480/West Broadway System Interchange project consists of addressing capacity needs, improving safety, and correcting functional design issues associated with this interchange and the adjacent interchanges at I-480/41st Street and I-29 with North 35th Street, Avenue G, and 9th Avenue.

The I-29/I-480/West Broadway System Interchange project includes the area of I-29 north of the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge to a point just west of North 25th Street along with the I-480 corridor to the Iowa side of the Missouri River crossing. Two concepts are under consideration for these project improvements. Both concepts provide direct access to West Broadway from I-29 via one-way frontage roads.

Iowa DOT is in the process of preparing an Environmental Assessment for the I-29/I-480/West Broadway area to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act, also known as NEPA. The Environmental Assessment will compare impacts between two concepts and determine if the proposed project will result in significant impacts to the environment, both human and natural. One of the concepts will be chosen as the preferred alternative and will be carried forward into a construction project.

The two concepts include constructing an interchange between I-29 and I-480.

Concept 1 includes a combined interchange between 9th Avenue, 2nd Avenue, West Broadway, and Avenue G, providing direct access via one-way frontage roads from West Broadway to I-29. Access from 9th Avenue to I-480 would be provided by one-way frontage roads. The existing partial interchange at 35th Street will be removed with this concept.

Concept 2 includes a combined interchange between 9th Avenue, 2nd Avenue, and West Broadway, providing direct access via one-way frontage roads from West Broadway to I-29. Direct I-29 access from I-480 to 9th Avenue would be provided. The existing partial interchange at Avenue G and 35th Street will be removed with this concept.

An interim project is being developed to improve access to the Playland Park and River’s Edge development area north of the I-480 interchange. This project will consist of extending Benson Street from Avenue D to Avenue B along with pavement marking channelization at the existing 40th Street interchange with I-480. The project will provide localized operational improvements and alternate accessibility during future construction.
