New Caterpillar Waste Buckets Push, Lift High VolumeCaterpillar introduces two new

wheel loader bucket designs — thedozing bucket and the load-and-carry bucket — for solid wastehandling in transfer stations andrecycling centers. The buckets arespecifically designed to enhancethe productivity of Cat small andmedium wheel loaders in wasteapplications.

The buckets range from 6.0 to14.0 cu. yd. (4.6 to 10.7 cu m) andcomplement Cat wheel loadersranging from the 924K to the980K. Two distinct types of wastebuckets give the fleet manager theability to choose the optimumbased on the facility layout and thespecific tasks to be performed. Both types of buckets can beequipped with bolt-on cutting

edges or rubber edges to suit therequirements of the facility.

Dozing BucketPushes High Volume

The Cat dozing buckethas a shallow throat and ataller profile than a stan-dard bucket. It is specifi-cally designed to pushloads along the floor toa hole or hopper thatfeeds a hauler orprocessing machinebelow. The bucketdesign has high vol-ume for its size, because it pushes theload rather than carry-ing it. In addition to itshigh volume, the

strength of the dozing bucket is itsfast loading capability due to itsdeep floor design.

Cat dozing buckets also featurerobust design and construction forextended durability. Visibility tothe load is improved with theuse of bars instead of screens.

Load-and-Carry BucketLifts High Volume

The Cat load-and-carrybucket has a deeper throat andless height compared to the doz-ing bucket, which enables it to

carry high volumes. It’s designedfor light weight materials andachieves a fill factor of 1.3 orgreater.

The bucket can be used forstockpiling or loading haulers or

pushing away from trucks tippingon the floor. The bucket designenables the loader to work in anyfacility layout — loading belowgrade, partial grade separation or atthe same level. The load-and-carrybucket has tamping capabilities tohelp ensure haulers are fullyloaded.

Cat load-and-carry buckets fea-ture high strength construction anddurability. Bars, rather thanscreens, provide improved sightlines through the upper part of thebucket and to the load.

Leading Edge Offers NewMulti-Ripper Talon Bucket Leading Edge AttachmentsInc. now offers the multi-ripper talon bucket as thenew addition to the multi-ripper SHARC productline. LEA multi-ripperproducts often replacehammers, blasting androck trenchers. Designedmainly for utility pipelinecontractors, the new multi-ripper talon bucket workson the same principle asthe multi-ripper bucket, except the bucket is very narrow, and the leading edges have been redesignedso that the center rib can be eliminated, thus improving capacity fill anddumping for a narrow bucket. The performance of this style of maximumbreakout “one tooth at a time” bucket exceeds all other designs of rock buck-et ripper combinations and has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars byavoiding the use of rock trenchers, hammers and blasting, according to themanufacturer. For more information, call 866/928-5800 or visit www.digrock.com.The SH360 is designed for those hard to

reach stumps that cannot be safely accessed with normal stumper carriers.

The buck-ets range from 6.0to 14.0 cu. yd. (4.6 to 10.7 cum) and complement Cat wheel loadersranging from the 924K to the 980K.

ConExpo 1981ConExpo 1981 — Everything’s Truly Bigger in Texas

The words big, bigger, biggest and jumbo were commonplace in Houston, Texas, during ConExpo ’81 at the Astrodome Complex between Jan. 25 and 30.

Big applied to the city of Houston, its expressways, the Astrodome, the Astrodomearea, the equipment that was on display, from towering Grove hydraulic cranes to 19yard hydraulic shovels to monster 1,000 hp bulldozers, to the super boxes in the upperreaches of the Astrodome itself. Another big was the crowd. Estimates ranged as highas 200,000, well exceeding the guestimates by the CIMA people.

One of the things that make ConExpo ’81 the greatest show on earth is the diversi-ty and breadth of the exhibitors. Nearly every conceivable type of equipment and serv-ice a contractor may want to use was represented at ConExpo.

There were also several surprises. Probably the biggest surprise was the foreigninvasion of a new wave of Japanese and European competitors moving in to stake outa position in the already crowded North American marketplace. The newcomers, including such giants as Komatsu, Hitachi, and I.B.H. Holding, demonstrated theirability to build extensive product lines; they are certainly to be considered a seriousthreat by U.S. manufacturers.

New technology, new lines and new ideas abounded at ConExpo in January. Someequipment was bigger, more powerful and, at the same time, more fuel efficient thanprevious models. Other pieces of equipment were more compact, versatile and maneu-verable than before. And in some cases, manufacturers added new technology to oldstandards giving them new viability and preventing obsolescence.

For those not interested in construction equipment, ConExpo ’81 provided a widevariety of other activities. The daring could ride a gondola lifted by a giant FMC crane

This ConExpo article was published in Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) rightafter ConExpo 1981 concluded in January. This and other ConExpo articles to followwill be part of a continuing series that take a look back at ConExpos past through thereporting of CEG. We hope you enjoy these retros as much as we did searching forthem deep in our archives.

to an observation post a couple hundred feet offthe ground. Case set up a little theater and letpeople operate live equipment. Other manufac-turers had working models of their equipment, which the public could control. Even historybuffs could find some of the antique machines, which were revolutionary in their time, inter-esting. The antiques provided some insight intohow much construction equipment haschanged the way we live. Not all the equipment in ConExpo ’81 was

brand new. Blaw-Knox went the other way anddisplayed a restored 1930 paver, the first auto-matic asphalt paving machine in history. It wasequipped with rollers for compacting theasphalt as it was laying it.

Mack to Begin Production of DME-Powered Vehicles in 2015Mack Trucks will begin produc-

tion of dimethyl ether (DME)-powered Mack Pinnacle AxleBack models in 2015. DME, anon-toxic, clean-burning alterna-tive fuel, offers many environmen-tal and societal benefits, includingthat it can be made from multiplesustainable feedstocks. One of the most significant

advantages of the fuel is that it pro-duces no soot, eliminating the needfor a diesel particulate filter (DPF).DME can provide up to a 95 per-cent CO2 reduction compared withdiesel when produced from bio-mass or biogas.Furthermore, DME can be made

from North America’s plentifuldomestic natural gas supply, food

waste, animal waste, grass clip-pings and other sustainablesources, offering the potential tohelp reduce dependency on foreignoil.“The benefits of DME are

numerous,” said Kevin Flaherty, president of Mack Trucks NorthAmerican Sales & Marketing. “It’sbetter for the environment becauseit burns clean, and it can be madefrom sources that are domesticallyavailable. Mack trucks are built inthe U.S.A., and with DME, we’llbe powering our vehicles with afuel made in America as well.”The Pinnacle Axle Back model

powered by DME will be equippedwith a Mack MP8 engine, offeringa 13-L engine to easily handle

heavy workloads. The PinnacleAxle Back model is ideal for high-way van trailer applications, bulkhauling, flatbed and dump trailerjobs. DME has the same performance

and energy efficiency as diesel. The fuel is compression-ignited, ishandled and stored similar topropane and does not need cryo-genic temperatures or high tankpressures.“Mack is a leader in natural gas

technology development, and webelieve DME has tremendouspotential as an effective way to usethe country’s abundant natural gasreserves to power heavy-dutytrucks,” Flaherty said. “DME isunique in that it is clean, easy to

handle, safe to store and will bemade domestically, benefittingeveryone.”DME can be produced by small-

scale production units that convertbiogas and natural gas into the fuel.Oberon Fuels recently announcedits first innovative production unitwould go online in June inCalifornia’s Imperial Valleyregion.“Oberon Fuels has developed

small-scale, skid-mounted produc-tion units that can cost- effectivelyconvert a variety of feedstocks toDME,” said Rebecca Boudreaux, president of Oberon Fuels. “Withthese small-scale production units, regional fuel markets are created, offering the potential to bypass the

infrastructure challenges of usingan alternative fuel while alsoenabling the use of locally avail-able feedstocks.”Mack’s DME-powered Pinnacle

model will join an alternative fuellineup that includes the natural gas-powered Mack TerraPro caboverand low entry models and the nat-ural gas-powered Mack Pinnacle, which made its debut during the2013 Mid-America TruckingShow. Mack also plans to launch anatural gas-powered MackGranite.

Kenworth Contest Winners Earn Special Test Drive, TourWhen Jon Kibler of

Bowmansville, N.Y., and BrycePinnell of Morrisonville, Ill., heardthey were winners in the recentKenworth T880 Test DriveContest, they especially lookedforward to becoming among thefirst truck drivers to drive the newKenworth T880.Introduced at the 2013 Mid-

America Trucking Show, the T880builds upon Kenworth’s 90-yearheritage. The T880 is standard withthe PACCAR MX-13 engine, which has ratings up to 500 hp(373 kW) and 1,850 lb.-ft. oftorque and offers excellent fuelefficiency, high reliability anddurability, lightweight design andlow cost of ownership, accordingto the manufacturer.Kenworth hosted the two win-

ners at events in both Columbusand Chillicothe, Ohio. InColumbus, the group attended theKenworth Natural Gas Summitcustomer event and learned moreabout Kenworth’s extensive natu-ral gas truck line-up.The following morning, they

journeyed one hour south toChillicothe, Ohio, home ofKenworth’s largest assemblyplant. Upon their arrival, thegroup was greeted by plantmanager Scott Blue, and thentaken on an informative andaction-packed 90-minute tour. And then, it was time for

Kibler and Pinnell to take theKenworth T880 out for a testdrive around the Chillicothearea. Kenworth had several

T880s for the two winners toexperience first-hand, includ-ing a regional T880 day cabwith a PACCAR MX-13 455hp (339 kW) engine and 13-speed Eaton manual transmis-sion, and a T880 Ohio dumpwith PACCAR MX-13 485 hp(362 kW) engine and EatonUltraShift Plus transmission. They also had a chance toclimb into the latest Kenworthnatural gas trucks there for theKenworth customer event at theplant.Kibler, who has been a truck

driver for one year, currently drivesfor Central Transport out of its ter-minal in Buffalo, N.Y. He also hasworked for Stevens Transport, where he mostly drove a Kenworth

T660.Kibler took a T880 dump

truck out for a run and wasimpressed. “It’s very stable and easy to

drive. Everything is right therein easy reach on the dash. Iliked the air-ride seat, whichwas very comfortable. TheT880 has excellent powerwith the PACCAR MX-13engine. The engine and thecab were very noticeablyquiet. I could actually hear theperson next to me. I wantone,” he added.Pinnell, who has been a

truck driver for seven years, became an owner-operator in2009 and operates his owncompany called E&MTransport. He has six trailersand now operates two trucks— a 2013 T660 72-in.AeroCab sleeper and a brandnew T660 with 2014 86-in.

Studio AeroCab, which he pickedup in Chillicothe after completionof his T880 test drives.“The T880 is really comfortable

and the PACCAR MX13 enginehad good pick-up and go. I likedthe overall visibility through thewindshield and over the hood. Theturning radius was great and Icould make sharp, tight turns,” saidPinnell. “The controls on the dashwere in good position, and I couldreach everything without having tostretch. And both the T880s I drovewere real quiet.”Before they parted company, the

winners and their guests eachreceived a special Kenworth back-pack stuffed with Kenworth mer-chandise, including a lightweightjacket, fleece blanket, T880 cap,T880 cowhide/denim work glovesand travel tumbler mug.More than 250 entries were

John Deere 460E ADT Challenges Andes MountainsThis past May, engineers from John Deere traveled to the

Atacama Desert Region of northern Chile to test the perform-ance of the 460E articulated dump truck (ADT) at high altitude. The mountains of Chile are filled with active mining sites thatneed the hauling capacity of the 460E ADT. Engineers workedto ensure the truck would perform reliably at this extreme alti-tude as well as exceed customers’ expectations in the ruggedmountains.John Deere identified a Chilean mine site at high elevation

that would provide a challenging work environment for theADT. Once a site was chosen, the ADT was shipped from theUnited States to Iquique, Chile, on a cargo ship. When the truckarrived in port, it was transported to the mine site locatedapproximately four hours from the coast, deep into the AndesMountains. The 460E ADT was introduced in North America with the

John Deere 13.5L engine, but the high altitude of Chile holdsunique challenges. Preliminary testing took place in Coloradoat 10,000 ft. (3,048 m) to better understand the potential chal-lenges the extreme altitude of the Chilean mountains may pres-ent.During the testing in Chile, the ADT did numerous perform-

ance and cold start tests, and conquered a 16,000 ft. (4,877 m)mountain to prove its extreme capabilities. The team left Chilewith a better understanding of the high altitude demands onequipment, as well as some product changes that will ensurethe 460E ADT will excel in the demanding environments ofSouth America, according to the company.

Caterpillar’s TH514C Telehandler Boasts New EnginePowered by a new 101-hp (76

kW) Cat C3.4B engine that meetsU.S. EPA Tier IV-Interim emissionsregulations, the Cat TH514C tele-handler has an operating weight24,890 lbs. (11,290 kg), a rated loadcapacity of 11,000 lbs. (4,990 kg),and a maximum lift height of 45 ft.(13.7 m) with stabilizer down. Thenew telehandler is available in anumber of machine configurationsto match various applications andoperating environments. For optimum utilization, the

TH514C handles a wide range ofwork tools via its standard integrat-ed-tool-carrier coupler, and anoptional hydraulic coupler allowsthe operator to change non-pow-ered work tools from the comfortand safety of the cab. For poweredtools, a selectable, continuous-flowauxiliary-hydraulic system ensuresproductive performance. The TH514C’s powerful

hydraulic system features a vari-able-displacement, load-sensing,axial-piston pump that delivers amaximum flow of 39.63 gpm at 3,626 psi(150 L/min at 250 bar), The hydraulic sys-

tem’s full-flow sharing valve permits theoperator to engage three hydraulic functions

simultaneously, and for enhanced control, the system allows the TH514C to develop

full hydraulic power at low enginespeeds. The TH514C’s spacious, com-

fortable cab features intuitive con-trols, including a single low-effortjoystick for work-took functionsand a three-mode steering systemfor precisely positioning themachine, promoting job-site effi-ciency and safety. Strategicallyplaced hand-holds and steps aredesigned to provide safe, conven-ient cab entry and exit, and theoperator is protected with anenclosed roll-over protective struc-ture.To ensure smooth, precise con-

trol of travel on rough-terrain jobsites, the TH514C's 4F/3R power-shift transmission uses a torqueconverter to smoothly transmit thedrive to the wheels. In addition, twotire options allow configuring themachine for optimum job-site per-formance.For more information, visit

“They’re good for the environ-ment and they’re easy on thebudget.”That’s how Constantino

Lannes, president of SennebogenLLC defined the most recentround of design updates featuredin the new 830, 835 and 840model material handlers intro-duced recently to the NorthAmerican market.“E-Series Sennebogen material

handlers mark the beginning of anew generation of machines build-ing on fuel-saving and environ-mentally-friendly efficienciesthroughout their power train andhydraulic system. The result is aline-up of Tier IV-compliantmachines that also reduce operat-ing costs.”The Sennebogen purpose-built

material handlers are engineeredfor continuous use in demandingapplications such as scrap recy-cling and demolition, ports facili-ties and log handling. Introducedby Sennebogen as the “GreenEfficiency” models, the E-Seriesbuilds on Sennebogen’s estab-lished standards for performancewith low fuel consumption, opera-tor comfort and maximum safety, according to the manufacturer.

Efficient Power TechnologyA key feature of the “Green

Efficiency” design is the “Eco-Mode” and no-load automatic stopfunction. The “Eco-Mode” settingcombines reduced engine speedwith an automatic idle control anda start-stop system that will effec-tively reduce fuel consumption. Due to a new intercooler design

with direct mechanical drive, theE-Series fan system delivers maxi-mum air supply right from thestart. With an additional tempera-ture-dependant oil and water cool-er, the system’s materials and com-ponents all reach their operatingtemperature quickly and uniform-

ly, which in turn reduces overallenergy demand.

Minimum BackgroundNoise, Even at Full LoadOn all models, Cummins

engines provide ample reservepower, even under high loads, set-ting new standards for low noiseemissions. With reinforced cabwindows and insulated soundtransmission paths, sound pressurein the operator’s cab measures 4dB lower — a noise reduction ofmore than half. In all models, NOx(nitrogen oxide) emissions havebeen halved by the E-Seriesexhaust aftertreatment system andparticulate matter has been reducedby 90 percent. As well, the 830, 835 and 840

are still offered in electric-drivemodels, which can reduce operat-ing costs by up to 50 percent more

when compared to diesel drives.Powered by 100 percent emission-free electric motors, these cleanelectric-drive material handlersoffer low noise, vibration freeoperation for an even more com-fortable operator environment, according to the manufacturer.

A Diverse Range ofEquipment and “GreenEfficiency” TechnologyNumerous component options

and engineering configurationsmake the new E-Series models theideal material handling machinesin the scrap yard, at the port or inforestry applications. With new slewing drive systems

for rapid duty cycles plus extreme-ly robust hydraulic cylinders, E-Series machines are tailored to takeon the toughest material handlingtasks. The elevating maXCab comfort

cab offers enhanced visibility andoperator ergonomics. Its distinctivesliding door with entry step andhandrail, featured as standard on E-Series, provides safe access to theoperator station. The SENCONcontrol system and an array ofperiphery cameras help the opera-tor to operate safely, even in con-

gested and busy work zones. The E-Series models also make

maintenance and servicing taskseasy. Centrally accessible servicepoints and simple, computer-freeengineering save time and effort ineveryday operation while increas-ing uptime through every servicecycle.

With a wide range of mobilitychoices such as the rubber-tiredundercarriage or wide trackcrawler and several optional boomand stick configurations, theSennebogen E-Series modelsadapt easily to any task where largequantities of material have to bemoved quickly and consistently. For more information, call

New Metal Detector/MagnetSeparator Doubles ProtectionMatching a powerful

magnetic separator along-side a highly-sensitive metaldetector is the best defenseagainst unwanted trampmetal, which can be danger-ous and damage expensiveequipment. The “DoubleTeam” Eriez metal detec-tor/magnetic separator com-bination provides protectionof crushers and downstreamequipment, according to themanufacturer. Why install both? Neither

a magnetic separator nor ametal detector is 100 percenteffective in removing metalcontamination. Pairing thetwo pieces of equipmenttogether is the solution toachieving the most completeremoval of troublesometramp metal possible.“Using the right magnet

with the proper metal detec-tion technology can safe-guard processing equipmentand ensure product purity. This tried-and-true ‘mar-riage’ keeps users’ productsunder strict surveillance atall times and preventsunnecessary machine down-time and costly maintenance,” said JohnKlinge, Eriez product manager-metal detec-tion.Metal contamination comes from a vari-

ety of sources. Incoming products may con-tain fine metal objects from the transporta-tion vessel used to deliver the product, including tank trucks and rail cars. The con-tamination also may originate within theplant because of material processing, granu-lating, shredding or general abrasion. There’s also the human factor: items such ascoins, pens and processing tools will occa-sionally fall into the product stream.

There are several types of magnetic sepa-rators and metal detectors that work welltogether, depending upon the industry.Magnetic separators remove the ferrous con-taminants while the metal detector focuseson any ferrous missed by the magnet as wellas nonferrous metals, i.e. aluminum, copper, brass and 300 series stainless steel, accord-ing to Klinge. For more information, call 888/300-

Driven by a key strategic initiative to expand its leadingNorth American position and support for its customersthroughout North America, Bomag Americas Inc.announced it will cease manufacturing operations inKewanee, Ill., by the end of 2014 and relocate its business toa yet to be determined location in the southern United States. The products (single drum rollers, asphalt rollers, MPH364reclaimer/stabilizer) which are currently manufactured inKewanee will either be relocated and/or replaced with mar-

ket accepted products manufactured in other existing Bomagfacilities located in Oklahoma, Germany or China. The com-pany is making this move in order to maximize its manufac-turing efficiencies, maintain competitive product costs andbetter support its customers, according to the company. As part of its corporate strategy to provide “best in class”

product support, the company will build a new facility toaccommodate a parts distribution center, training facility forsales and service, assembly to accommodate special featuresfor the North American market and a corporate office com-plex. In conjunction with this move the company also isannouncing its intent to enter into a long-term lease with afacility based in Oklahoma that will focus on providing theengineering, technical support and manufacturing of asphaltpavers, material transfer vehicles and reclaimer/stabilizersspecifically designed for North and South America as well asother key export markets. “In order to improve our leading position in the market-

place we felt it was imperative to consolidate our manufac-turing operations in order to leverage economies of scale andmaximize our competitive position,” said Joerg Unger, pres-ident of Bomag, Worldwide. “Our intent is to strengthen ourNorth American organization with the objective of beingcloser to our customers in service support, product develop-ment and product specific engineering utilizing all potentialsynergies within the Bomag Worldwide organization. Diamond Interchange Expected toEase Congestion in Las Vegas Valleyto the commuters in that partof the valley, which includesSilverado Ranch east of I-15 and Southern Highlandson the west side of I-15.These are huge master plancommunities that were builtin early 2000 when thingswere really booming.” Groundbreaking on the

project took place in April, four years after the projectwas approved and then laterhalted when Nevada high-way projects were repriori-tized. “The transportation

industry is way down inNevada,” Newcome said.“There are only three $40million highway jobs in thesouthern part of the state. Inthis economy, we’re realglad to have it.”About 75 craft labor jobs

have been created for the

interchange construction, but that doesn’t include jobscreated by material suppli-ers, Hodge said. The projectrequired the acquisition ofprivate property to be com-pleted and involves threenew drainage systems.“It’s a big drainage job, so

we’re using a lot excavators, loaders, cranes, bulldozersand scrapers,” Newcomesaid. “We must shift the traf-fic back and forth so there isa lot of traffic movement. That’s always a safety con-cern for the constructionworkers and for the public.

We don’t shut down theinterstate at all. We take alane in the middle of thenight so we don’t have a sig-nificant impact on traffic. Attimes we are moving trafficaround 24/7, and at times weare working around theclock. Once we get the traf-fic moved we are workingthe day shift.”The project was funded

through the federal govern-ment with about $38.9 mil-lion going for the actual con-struction and the balance fordesign, engineering, the pur-chase of right-of-way andadministration. The Louis Berger Group

was contracted for thedesign of the project andconstruction support. It isslated to be finished inOctober 2014.

INTERCHANGE from page 1

The diamond interchange is expected to ease congestion in the southeastern andsouthwestern areas of Las Vegas Valley.

After a four-year delay, a $62 million interchange project in Las Vegas is at lastunder way. The Cactus Avenue interchange is being constructed between SilveradoRanch Road and St. Rose Parkway on I-15.

The project was funded through the federal government with about $38.9 million going for the actual con-struction and the balance for design, engineering, the purchase of right-of-way and administration.

Estimated Completion DateExtended By Two Yearsothers have been redesigned. The estimate for when the floating bridge

will be completed also has changed — fromlate 2014 to April 2016. Information released Aug. 23 on the DOT

Web site comes a month after newTransportation Secretary Lynn Peterson and520 program administrator Julie Meredithheld a news conference to reassure the pub-lic that the bridge project’s $250 millionreserve fund is sound. The state doesn’t have concrete plans for

finding more money if the project requires it. An Aug. 16 letter from Peterson instructs

the 520 team to look for cost savings, nego-tiate aggressively and work with the statetreasurer’s office on financing options. DOT spokesman Lars Erickson said $228

million is the upper end of estimated costoverruns and the DOT will try to negotiatedownward from there with contractors, including Kiewit, the primary partner for thefloating section of the bridge. The DOT has money to proceed through

mid-2014 while it makes plans for the rest ofthe project. State lawmakers failed to pass a new 10-

year highway package before they wenthome this year, and the latest news makesthat a tougher sell for DOT, said state Rep.Ed Orcutt of Kalama, the rankingRepublican on the House TransportationCommittee. “If they want a gas tax, to build more proj-

ects, they’ve got to get things right. They’velost a lot of trust,” he said. Orcutt said he doesn’t know how to react

if the 520 fund “goes negative.”Conceivably, if some other project is doneunder budget, money could be shiftedaround, he said. House Transportation Chairwoman Judy

Clibborn, D-Mercer Island, tried to allocateat least $100 million more for 520 in thefailed package in the spring, and could beexpected to try again.

Report Calls for LiftingFed Tolling ProhibitionTurnpike Association, the worldwide associ-ation representing toll facility owners andoperators and the businesses that serve them, joined several other groups at the press con-ference, including the American Road andTransportation Builders Association(ARTBA), Associated General Contractors(AGC), Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) andTransportation Transformation Group (T2).“When the interstate highway system was

first being built in the 1950s, the emphasiswas on paying to get it built, creating aninterconnected national system and creatingimmediate jobs and economic growth. TheHighway Trust Fund is one valuable tool tomaintain roadways, bridges and tunnels, butit is not funded at a level needed to addressthe rebuilding of our interstate system. Therecommendations outlined in the ReasonFoundation report are critical to helpingbridge the huge funding gap to fund ournation’s transportation infrastructure.Tolling is one proven funding option toaddress this huge gap,” Jones said at thepress conference.

The new report, Interstate 2.0:Modernizing the Interstate Highway Systemvia Toll Finance, makes the case for liftingthe federal prohibition on tolling existinglanes of the Interstate highway system. Thereport states:“…as the reality of the cost of interstate

reconstruction and modernization sinks in atthe legislative level, and the low cost andconvenience of all-electronic toll collectionbecomes better understood, elected officialsmay catch up with public sentiment that isalready receptive to tolling as better than (orless bad than) increases in transportationtaxes to pay for major new investments inhighway infrastructure.”The report said, “The one thing states

need from Congress in the next reauthoriza-tion is permission for all states to use tollfinancing for the specific purpose of replac-ing worn-out Interstate pavement andbridges with new and better ones.”For more information, visit:
