Child injuries do not rank highly, suggesting that the problem is speed related.Data from NYS-DOT for 1993-97

Northbound speeds along University/MLK Blvd.35 mph average39 mph 85th percentile 44 mph max.[30 cars, June, Wed, 1pm, sunny day]Right turns from Hall of Fame Terrace (stop sign) and West 181 Street (signal) are shallow and can be made at high speeds. No crosswalk in front of entrance to college; students cross in the middle of the block - most direct. Long and circuitous crosswalks formed by angled intersection designed primarily for vehicles.~200 feet directly to W. 181 St & park~430 feet if one followed crosswalks

Signalized Mid-block Crosswalk directly in front of the college. Stop Lines at least 10 feet back from the crosswalk. Keeps vehicles out of crosswalk, lets cyclists queue ahead of drivers. Add a bus stop for BX3 at new crosswalk.Clear Corner Zones 20 feet from the intersection (one car or hydrant). Increases visibility between drivers, cyclists and walkers.

Stripe 12-foot wide median along University/MLK Blvd. Allows 11-foot travel lanes, 5-foot bike lane and 8-foot parking lanes in both directions. Road is 60 feet wide. Median can accommodate turning pockets where necessary or become a two-way-left-turn lane.Create two intersections - Hall of Fame Terrace and West 181 Street. The former will have its own signal, the latter will be grouped with the signal at the college crosswalk. By reorganizing the intersection, the quick right turn lanes, long & circuitous crosswalks, and general confusion will dissipate.Stripe all excess roadway and install planters or bollards to keep vehicles out and protect pedestrians waiting to cross street. The planters could be adopted by the community.

Raised Median on University/MLK Blvd tree-lined, 12-foot wide:pedestrians only cross one direction of traffic at a timehead-on collisions reducedpassing on the right and U-turns eliminatedcannot pass slower vehicles, thereby everyone drives more slowlybike lanesRaised Corner Extensions to sidewalk levelRelocate hydrants to the curbParking pockets formed by corner extensions

Composite Sketch showing all proposals plus treesLarge area at southeast corner next to Aqueduct Park convert to park land with playground, benches, trees, space for a Greenmarket, flea market, etc.

Right turn is made more acute and thus slower.Separator island allows stop sign for right turn, but signalized left turn. This better accommodates traffic turning right and then left onto Hall of Fame Terrace.Crosswalk across University/MLK has no conflict with turning traffic.Median set back to allow for larger vehicles to turn.Set back stop lines and bike bypass lanes.Curb extensions keep vehicles from parking in intersection.
