I have worked as a Graphic Designer/Marketeer for over 10 years and I have held my current position at DFDS for 6 years. I still continue to enjoy applying our brand across all platforms, everything from the DFDS website, blog, company vehicles, buildings, brochures, ships and event materials.

I have a great love of design, film and brand identity. I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of films and random pop culture subjects that lends itself very well to my creative process.

I’m not adverse to tackling projects that aren’t immediately associated with my job title (I have designed and project managed office refurbishments, shop fits and building exterior projects).

I’m very flexible and collaborative with my approach and can work very quickly to produce many variations of my designs.

Please take a look through the following pages of my portfolio for an overview of the work I have produced over the past 6 years.

The above are a very small selection of images I have had to manipulate over the past 6 years in order for them to be fit for use either on the DFDS Seaways website or printed materials.

Images I have manipulated have also been used in many large format projects, including pull up stands, 48 sheets and as part of the branded company wallpaper in the DFDS Seaways Newcastle boardroom.

Although I have been present on the majority of the shoots commissioned by DFDS Seaways and we always try to do as much as possible to create the best possible environment to capture the shots needed, there is always either a rogue element that needs removed post shoot or something springs to mind that just wasn’t possible during the shoot, anything is possible if done right.

dFds seaways ferry brochure 2013 sPReads

This brochure is produced yearly and is something I have worked on every year since 2008 when it was originally out sourced to the design team at Robson Brown.

I will also if time allows source the print and local distribution of these brochures. I have undertaken quite a few press passes over the years to make sure the colours and images reproduce as I want them and they match the DFDS Seaways brand guidelines. This years brochure is currently being produced and is now in it’s 3rd design style, the above is the 2nd style when we moved away from having 1 image on the cover to sum up the maritime experience, to a multi- image approach. The 3rd style is a progression of this that incorporates a 30 degree coloured angle that is an element that is consistent throughout all current creative and can be seen in some of the follow-ing materials on the next few pages.

As with a lot of printed materials the frequency of these brochures has gone from 2 editions per year down to 1 edition per year, however it is still a vital element when working with travel agents.

we had a great time. Our time in Amsterdam gave us lots of opportuni-ties to explore.

It’s my 60th birthday next year and I will be travelling with you again. In fact my daughter said she wished we could go on a mini cruise every weekend.”

These leaflets are both A5 6pp on a modest 130gsm Satimat that really makes the colours pop. Of all the many and varying design tasks I have had in both my current role at DFDS Seaways and my previous role at FoneLogistics, A5 6pp leaflets have been the most abundant.

Once I had the template for these leaflets locked down with the above Group Travel leaflet I was able to turn-around the first draft of next leaflet in an afternoon, with the final version was off to print the next day..

The second leaflet shown is the the most recent I have worked on and shows some modifications I have made to my original layout.

When I first started at DFDS Seaways I would write all the copy myself with input from the Brand manager, however since the team has grown considerably and so that I may spend more of my time on design, we have hired a copy writer who will create the copy needed for each leaflet, however I do still make the odd revision or propose the occasional headline.

Here are a selection of printed materials I have designed and had produced. Posters and Direct Mailers are pretty self explanatory. The car graphics I come up with various de-signs that once signed off I work with a local company to apply my designs to their vehicle dies and then they fit the finished cut vinyls.

The graphics one the Mini have been updated regularly for the past 4 years and the Qashqai is quite new having only been wrapped in September last year.

And finally to the right is an oversized DL 6pp customer fact sheet that every customer gets when they sail with DFDS Seaways from Newcastle.

Everything here and on the following pages comes from PSD templates I have created to the sizes specified by our IT department, each template will contain sub folders pertaining to the main elements in each graphic, header copy, background image, price flash, CTA and so on. This al-lows me to easily highlight and change any element and it’s also invaluable when I need to out source any work to an outside agency as everything is laid out logically and named and is easy for them to work from if they aren’t familiar with our brand guidelines/layout.

All website and e-mail templates created by me share the same logic..

The starting line of the Tour de France 2014 was in Leeds this year and DFDS Seaways partnered with the Holland tourist board to camp out for the weekend and hand out leaflets detailing how cycle friendly Hol-land is, as well as running a competition for a mini cruise.

All items had to satisfy the DFDS Seaways brand guidelines as well as the Holland tourist boards. I took on the design duties and liaised with both our internal campaign managers and the Holland tourist boards brand manger to make sure everyone was happy and that there was a clear synergy in all material pro-duced.

TAKE YOUR BIKE TO HOLLAND

HOLLAND - THE ULTIMATE CYCLING NATION

DFDS.CO.UK/CYCLE

EXCLUSIVE OFFER

Travelling by ferry is a perfect way to travel for cyclists. You can either take your car and attach your bikes to your vehicle, or if you prefer you can travel by bike and cycle onboard.

We have two routes from the UK, perfect for access to Holland. Those in the north, the Midlands or Scotland can sail directly to Holland via our Newcastle to Amsterdam route. There are daily overnight sailings in each direction and excellent onboard facilities to keep everyone entertained as you cruise across the North Sea.

If you live in the south, our route across the Channel from Dover to Dunkirk provides the best option. The Dutch border is a two hour drive from port through Belgium. There are up to 12 daily crossings to Dunkirk and the journey takes just 2 hours.

Holland is the ultimate destination for cycling thanks to its flat landscape, short distances and wonderful infrastructure. It’s safe, easy and great fun! More than 32,000 kilometres of bicycle paths are waiting for you throughout the country. So if you want to see more of Holland, one of the best ways to do so is by bicycle.

Our top 5 reasons to explore Holland by bicycle:

1. Road signs have been perfected so it is virtually impossible for a cyclist to get lost!2. Holland has a mild climate so it is rarely too hot or too cold to ride a bicycle3. You will see the most beautiful spots that are otherwise hidden4. You’ll find a whole host of cycling events to take part in, from fun races to week-long tours5. Holland is one of the top 5 countries in the world for road safety

In short, the bicycle is the perfect means of transport if you want to see Holland at its best. If you don’t own a bicycle or cannot take one with you, you can rent bicycles pretty much every-where.

Did you know?

In 2015 the Grand Départ of the 102nd Tour de France will take place in the city of Utrecht. This will be the sixth time the Grand Départ has taken place in Holland, a record number outside of France.

Other notable event materials I have produced are shown here, to the left we have the pop up stand graphic for the Great North Museum North Sea exhibition, This was produced with input from Whale and Dolphin charity ORCA. I took the co-ordinates from the various wildlife sightings that had been recorded on board DFDS Seaways ships and paired this with the stats of the various species to create a colourful map chart.

ORCA also has a wildlife centre on board KING SEAWAYS, all display panels in this centre where produced by me also.

Below left is a selection of T-shirts produced for various events, nothing to over the top, just something to compliment the overall messaging behind each event..

Top right is the leaflet that was handed out at the Great North Museum North Sea Exhibition.

And finally below is an ad trailer that went a step further when I designed graphics to turn a normal green Land Rover Defender into a copy of one of DFDS Seaways ships. Also shown are the various messages applied to the trailer graphics, these where changed daily and the trailer was towed around key locales in the Dover area other a 2 week period.

The idea was to re-create the most prominent part of the DFDS logo in a way that is different yet still comple-mentary to the DFDS brand style. I took shots of crew members from the ships sailing the UK routes, the team members in the Newcastle and Dover offices and combined them with shots of our customers to create a photomontage of the maletese cross part of the logo and show the positive emotions behind DFDS Seaways.

A second version is on display in the DFDS Seaways Whitfield office with more of a English channel/Dover team slant and I’m also working on a third version for the operational office in Dover port.

ORCAWILDLIFE OFFICER

RACHAEL

Marine Wlidlife Activity Timings (Times are in Central European Time CET)

A friend was relocating down south and as a leaving gift we put together a hamper of proper North East food and presentedi it to him in a nice big hamper. I pulled together this quick design and printed it onto some stickers to finish off the whole ‘Northern’ theme.

Over the past 7 years, I have been responsible for designing various display items to support the Whale and Dolphin charity ORCA and the wildlife-watching program they run on board one of the DFDS Seaways ships that sails from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

For the beginning of the 2015 wildlife watching season the ship very kindly donated a much larger room on board. However, the room was in much need of repair and I only had 6 weeks to turn it around from empty shell to wildlife centre.

As a start the room was stripped and re-carpeted. I then sought the ex-pertise of a local company called The Rip and two very talented fitters to board out the room in white foamex. This was to give a nice clean studio feel that would allow the artwork displayed inside to really pop and stand out, as well as also smooth out the walls that had sustained a lot of damage when the previous shop fit had been removed from the room.

I then created artwork and applied it using various methods, such as: Printed die cut foamex life-size marine mammals, printed self-adhesive wallpaper of a large wall map of North Sea wildlife sightings and large printed foamex info boards describing the relationship between DFDS and ORCA.

A launch event was held on 25 March, BBC wildlife/Blue planet photographer Doug Allan opened the centre, and the response to the new centre so far is extremely positive. Chronicle article link
