AN AMERICAN FAMILY’S JOURNEY THROUGH WORLD WAR II
A staged book talk featuring the author and renowned Boston Equity Actor, J.T. Turner
Thursday, August 3 , 7:30 pm H-W Community House Tickets: $5.00
A father’s odyssey. A mother’s secret. A son’s story. Wilber’s War chronicles the story of two ordinary Americans, Wilber and Norma Bradt, during an extraordinary time, World War II. It offers fresh insight—deeply personal—into the historic conflict as it was fought by the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and by a family on the home front. It is an epic tale of patriotic and familial duty, heroism, love, infidelity and the tragedy of suicide.
Author Hale Bradt, the son of Wilber, is a resident of Salem, MA. He is Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at MIT with a specialty of astrophysics. He served in the US Navy during the Korean conflict, and began his research into his parents’ lives during World War II on his 50th birthday in 1980.

THE HISTORY OF IMPRESSIONISM
EVERY TUESDAY AT 10:30 AM in JUNE
This course of 24 lectures will analyze an era within the history of art that, with the help of contemporary
events, philosophies, and ideas, launched the birth of modernity and changed the way we see the world. We
started with a look at the troubled state of art in France in the 1850s. At this time, French art was reliant on the
governance of the Academy of Fine Arts and the government sponsored art exhibitions known as “the Salons”.
Before delving into the development of Impressionism, the course 1st examines the city of Paris during the
Second Empire, the reign of Napolean III, and it’s emergence as a modern metropolis. This is far more
interesting than I am making it sound! Bring a friend, all are welcome!
Our professor is Dr. Richard R. Brettel, who is among the foremost authority in the world on
Impressionism and French Painting. He has taught at Yale, Harvard, University of Chicago, Northwestern, and
University of Dallas. Now he is coming to the Wenham COA courtesy of The Great Courses. Come one, come
all, whether you have never studied European painting, or are an expert. We hope to see you there!
Tues., Aug 22. , 1pm Essex River Cruises operates within a tidal estuary. The tour explores the
salt marsh and navigates within a protected bay. Please come but
RSVP! Cost $14 per person.

Low Vision Group
The Hamilton and Wenham COA have a monthly Low Vision
Group that meets in Hamilton for local residents with low or
no vision, and their family or caregivers. The group is open to
anyone from surrounding towns that might not otherwise have
access to a low vision group. The intention of the group is to
combine “business and pleasure,” offering educational
material and guest speakers, and fun trips away.
This month’s meeting is Thursday, Aug. 17, at 11 am,
followed by lunch at the Hamilton Senior Center. This month,
Chrys Peralta, an Occupational Therapist with the
Massachusetts Association for the Visually Impaired
(MABVI), Services for Seniors in Essex County, will join us
to talk about living with low vision.
The program and lunch are free; however, reservations for the
lunch are required by August 10. Call Lucy at 978-468-5595.
