In the same census, the figures recorded the area to have a 86.% black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) population, with an Asian population of 66.1% and a black population of 13.8%.
This diversity is the reason for many of the unique retail and culinary offerings, unique to Wembley, with first-timers to the area often stunned by the sheer variety of offerings in this still largely undiscovered part of north west London.
Shops along Ealing Road, as an example, are akin to Aladdin’s cave of wonders, particularly the textile and jewellery offerings. It is next to impossible to visit Ealing Road without returning home with either a sari, or a few metres of ornate fabric.
Then there’s the jewellery shops; locals say what Carnaby Street seeks to be for British design, so does Ealing Road for Asian artisan jewellery.
Specialists in South Asian jewellery, the array of jewellery shops has been known to attract visitors from as far afield as Leicester for decades.
It is also not possible to walk past any of the Indian street food stalls and not be tempted by the aromas, while the restaurants offer everything from Indian to Somalian specialties, American burgers joints, and fish and chips.
Much has been done to regenerate the area, but a concerted effort has been made to keep the essence of Wembley intact.
For example, the Grade II-listed Wembley Arena, now the SSE Arena, was sensitively refurbished, carefully not to lose its iconic Art Deco style.
Wembley Stadium, demolished in 2003, was rebuilt for £798m in 2007 and is now one of the most iconic sites in the whole of London, hosting world-class
events all year round.Whatever your reason for visiting Wembley and Ealing Road,
even if it’s just to visit Brent’s blue plaques – comedian Arthur Lucan is on Forty Lane or boxer Henry Cooper at 4 Ealing
Road – now is the time.
A 15 minute journey into central London is all it takes for a cultural experience unlike anywhere else in the capital.
Wembley and Ealing Road is a feast for the senses, specialising in Indian restaurants, fashion, groceries and amenities.
But whether it is for a new cultural experience, a football match at Wembley Stadium or a concert at the SSE Arena, Wembley has something for everyone.
The area itself has gone through many stages of transition, from when it was first recorded in the ninth century as “wemba lea.”
It was only in 1965 that the area merged with the Municipal Borough of Willesden to create the London Borough of Brent, and has since formed part of Greater London.
Up until the 20th century Wembley remained relatively untouched, and it was only when the Birmingham-London railway line came into fruition that the landscape began to change, introducing a hotel, shops and another station - Wembley Hill - into the area.
But Wembley really started to take shape when it was chosen as the site for the British Empire exhibition in 1924 and 1925, attracting over 27 million visitors.
This event really put Wembley on the map, as infrastructure began to improve and Londoners began to settle in the former piece of countryside, and was the site of a thriving manufacturing industry including companies such as Griffin & George laboratory equipment and GEC whose research labs from 1923 were the first of their kind in the UK.
Perhaps one of the most memorable stories from Wembley is what is now known as “Watkin’s Folly”.
Former chairman of the Metropolitan Railway Sir Edward Watkin, wanted to create an imitation of the Eiffel Tower in Wembley, but it never rose beyond the first storey and then removed completely in 1907, and in 1923 Wembley Stadium was erected on this site.
Thankfully, the fate of Wembley didn’t follow this failed visitors’ attraction. The population of Wembley continues to grow, with the borough of Brent
being one of the most diverse in the UK, with the population count of Wembley Central, according to the latest 2011 census, being 14,727.

Fast beats and juicy meats are brought together at Beats Burger. This restaurant offers good food, fast service and a fun, pop soundtrack.
Their meat burgers are incredible, with high-quality patties, crispy salad and a generous layer of their special mayo all held between fluffy brioche rolls. Yet their menu extends much further, including
vegan wraps, veggie burgers and peri-peri chicken worth making a journey just to try.
Situated only eight minutes down the road from Wembley Stadium, the location tops off the restaurant’s many selling points. As the owner Ismat says, “The future is Wembley.”

Check out Blue Check for good music, great service and even better food.
The big flavours and huge portions make breakfasts here a morning favourite.
In evenings, the curries get snapped (Wednesday curry nights go down a storm) but it’s the chilli con carne with nachos that steals the show. The chopped-up
chillies mixed within the mince will leave your breath burning. But, with cooling sauces, the large-portioned dish will keep you coming back for more.
With regular sets from their resident DJ Universal Sound ft. Bad Andrew, and a wall that’s lined with the faces of musical legends, their rich meals harmonise with the setting perfectly.

From jerk chicken to jacket potatoes, the Early Bird Café combines Caribbean and English cuisines to create a winning menu.
At this café, customer service is everything. The owner Catherine Coke left the City to run the business, and her warmth and dedication to making customers
feel welcome has kept regulars coming back for 14 years.
It’s ideally located, sitting just a short walk from the stadium. Because of this, as well as the warm service, quick preparation times, varied menu and high-quality food (to name a few selling points), it’s an obvious choice for a lunch break.

When you enter Mezze Grill, you feel the heat of the open kitchen, you see the meat slowly turning on a skewer, you hear and smell the charcoal grill; you can almost imagine how good the food will taste.
The grilled meats are the top choices here, offering all of the crispiness and rich smoky flavour associated with Turkish charcoal grills.
But their extensive vegetarian menu should not be overlooked. The healthy hummus, hot grilled halloumi (and lots of other veggie dishes not beginning with ‘h’) are expertly prepared, skilfully served and full of indulgent flavours.

For sweet, hot and sour Chinese food, it’s difficult to beat Ni Hao – a restaurant that attracts visitors from around the world. This Szechuan and Cantonese restaurant offers delicious warmers, such as won ton soup with pork dumplings and spring onion, and a spicy veggie option of crispy beancurd (tofu) with chilli and salt.
Chopsticks sit on tables, waiting to be attempted, and beautiful Chinese prints decorate the walls. Before the food even arrives, Ni Hao is an inviting place to sit and chat. With large tables, and meals that are perfect for sharing, the restaurant is ideal for a foody night out with friends.

Peppercorn’s opening times vary but it’s one to catch when you can.
The food at this deli-style sandwich shop is simple, honest and fresh, with a range of fillings available to pick and choose to meet your fancies.
Good enough to name a café after, the peppercorn chicken sandwich
is a definite star of the menu. While chicken sandwiches for lunch may not seem particularly ground-breaking, there are few that share the hot spice and creaminess of this one. Mixed peppers add bursts of veggie flavour and, as the meat’s marinated with chilli and onions, this chicken dinner is a winner.

Wonderfully retro and increasingly health-conscious, Wimpy breaks the mould. The franchise in Wembley Park offers fast food with nutritional information, listing the calories of each item on the menu with transparency.
Particularly popular are the quarter-pounder burgers (572 kcal FYI), but the menu extends much
further, offering other British favourites such as cod and chips (783 kcal) and an all-day breakfast (896 kcal… a little higher, but they say you should eat breakfast like a king for a reason).
The impressive openness of this restaurant through their reminders of calories lets you treat yourself - without overdoing it.
