Hidden behind a drawbridge and moat in the centre of England’s smallest City, lies a little-known gem of a Medieval Palace.

The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens in Wells, Somerset is a wedding reception venue like no other, where you can truly be King & Queen of the Palace on your special day.

Mark the start of your married life together in our breath-taking 800 year old medieval Palace, which never fails to wow as guests arrive over the drawbridge and into the grounds. Entertain inside the impressive Palace buildings and enjoy 14 acres of gardens which offer fantastic opportunities for photographs. You don’t have to be royalty to celebrate here - but we’ll treat you as if you were.

The Bishop’s Palace


Part of the fun of your wedding day is the planning and we want to make this as enjoyable for you as the actual day itself. Our dedicated wedding co-ordinator will take care of all the details for you, from first show-round, to advising about timings, décor and offering menu tastings. Our experienced team will liaise with you throughout the planning period so that when the big day comes along, we’ll know exactly what you want and how you want it so that you can concentrate on enjoying yourself.

You’ll get to know us very well in the run up to your wedding, which is just how we like it to be, after all, you’ve entrusted us to deliver the biggest day of your lives.

Planning


As you arrive over the drawbridge, your guests will be eager to see you and have an opportunity for photographs in this wonderful setting. Drinks and canapés are served in the original medieval Entrance Hall and on the garden terrace whilst you spend time with your photographer and guests.

There are 14 acres of gardens to explore and plenty of space for families to run around or play games in. And don’t worry if the weather lets you down, the Entrance Hall is the perfect place to enjoy drinks and if it’s really cold we’ll light the impressive medieval log fire to make you feel at home.

Arrival


Once it’s time to eat you will be called into the medieval Undercroft for the feasting to begin. Seating between 50-120 guests, the Undercroft is a stunning environment in which to enjoy your first meal together as a married couple. Tables and chairs will be beautifully dressed in white linen and you’ll have the opportunity to make it your own by choosing flowers and decorations to match your colours and themes.

The undercroft is the location for your evening reception too. We’ll move some of the furniture to create an area for a DJ or band and dancing which means that your first dance will be set to a breathtaking backdrop - which could come in useful should you need to distract from two left feet.

Our experienced catering team know that for most wedding couples, the food is an extremely important part of the wedding reception. Our Head Chef and Functions Manager will spend time finding the right cuisine to suit your requirements and will arrange for a menu tasting in the run up to the wedding.

Most of our ingredients are locally sourced (preferably within 50 miles) from the fantastic range of Somerset suppliers right on our doorstep. We also use seasonal ingredients from our own Community Gardens right here on site.

The Menu


One of the big attractions of the Palace is the 14 acres of gardens that surround it. A mixture of formal Dutch style flower beds, a picturesque style South Lawn, the wild freedom of the Arboretum and of course the well pools that give the city of Wells its name, offer a wonderful space for guests to explore and enjoy.

Lots of children in the wedding party? Why not arrange some entertainment for them? A children’s entertainer, garden games or even the family trail that we offer to our visitors are guaranteed to be enjoyed by children big and small.

The Gardens


After your delicious meal, cake cutting and speeches in the Undercroft, it’s good to mingle, stretch legs and enjoy some more of the Palace. We’ll help usher guests upstairs to the Long Gallery for coffee and cake whilst we prepare the Undercroft for your evening reception.

The Long Gallery is one of the most stunning rooms in the Palace, full of historic interest and it is a wonderful space for you and your guests to enjoy. And don’t worry; the gardens are still accessible via the exterior staircase from the Long Gallery.

Often with wedding parties, guests can be travelling from afar for the special day. We can offer advice on where to find accommodation to suit all budgets.

As Medieval Palaces weren’t intended for vehicle use, we don’t offer any guest parking on site. Whilst we can offer limited parking for the wedding cars and disabled or elderly guests, for the rest of the guests, parking is available in the city centre. We can provide details and maps of available parking and we’re always happy to use our local knowledge to offer advice.
