Annual Residency Requirement Begins in

2014-15

Beginning in July, 2014 Fort Osage will join the ranks of many area school districts by requiring that families provide proof of residency in the district each year. Families will be able to meet this requirement by providing a current utility bill or lease, either electronically or in person at the school office. This requirement is being put in place to ensure that all students reside in the district, which is the state law and district policy. Residents of the

district expect that their tax dollars support students who are lawfully enrolled. The requirement will also help district staff to identify those students who are homeless or in other special housing situations. In order to make this process convenient for parents, specific dates will be scheduled at each school for parents to provide their utility bill as well as a residency verification form. Parents will also be able to email a utility bill to the school office, as long as its sent from the email address on file with the district. Dates in late July will be scheduled in each K-4 building, the ECC and

Fire Prairie when parents can stop by the school with their information. At Osage Trail and the High School, students or parents will provide their utility bill during registration and schedule pick-up in early August. Several different utility bills will be accepted as proof of residency. Parents can provide an electric, gas, water, trash, cable or line telephone bill with a July or August date as verification of current residency. A current mortgage statement or lease will also be accepted. In addition to the utility bill, each family will complete a brief Residency Verification Form to verify their

current living arrangement. In addition to accepting paper copies of residency proofs at the school, parents can forward an electronic bill or scanned copy of a bill to the school office via email. Proof of residency will be required for all enrolled students by the first day of school each year. Students will not be immediately dropped if proof of residency isn’t received, but they will be removed from the district rolls by the end of September if residency proof hasn’t been provided.
