Matt Berend & Annie DawsAs far as Annie Daws was concerned, it was just another Saturday night in Stephenville. It was her mother’s birthday but, aside from that, slow-cooked brisket and a family gathering were nothing special.

Little did she know her boyfriend, Matt Berend, was about to make it the biggest moment of her life.

“She had no idea I was going to propose,” says Matt. “It was just perfect, with all the family already there.”

Though Matt just popped the question this October, he feels it’s been years in the making. Both he and Annie are from the same small town of Windthorst, just south of Wichita Falls, and they each attended the same high school, though they were a few grades apart. Matt had noticed Annie from afar when she was a freshman and he, a senior. But after his graduation, life took them separate ways.

Matt went away to work and the years intervened; Annie left for school at Tarleton State. After an accident altered the course of Matt’s life plans, he returned close to home for intensive rehabilitation. He considered his career options, decided to con-tinue his education. And as fate would have it, he enrolled at Tarleton, too.

“I think we both knew right away,” says Matt about getting reconnected with Annie. “After just one weekend together, I knew she was something special.” Three months after that first outing, each was telling their family that ‘the one’ had come along.

Now, some three years later, an October wedding awaits—and then so much more.

Happy is an understatement, says Matt. “We are very, very blessed.”

The 4 C’s: Color, Cut, Clarity, and Carat WeightThe most common and popular diamond color is clear or white, but diamonds of other colors do exist and are often made into exquisite pieces of jewelry. The color grade is based on the shade and hue of the diamond, and ranges on a scale of D-Z.

The cut of a diamond is perhaps the most important part of the diamond-manufacturing business. While the other aspects of a diamond’s appearance are natural, a professional artist must cut the diamond with a skilled hand in order to unleash its inherent beauty.

Clarity is determined by the individual attributes of each exclusive diamond. It is rated on a scale of F (flawless) to I (included).

Guided by a group of Franciscan priests, the tired men trudged northward from Mexico; despite their best efforts, colonization didn’t come as swiftly as planned. Finished in hand-forged detail… esterday, he was busy with the receiver of a prized firearm. And today, he cradles a silver trophy cup dating to 1918. Though the items themselves vary, Mike Johnson’s hand is always the same—sure and

steady—his engraving, marking important moments in time.

“We like putting a personal touch on something that’s really treasured by someone else,” says Mike. “And hand engraving is so deep and rich, so three-dimensional. There’s a real quality there that just can’t be

replicated.”

An ancient art lost largely to technology, hand en-graving is now practiced by just a few jewelers in the Fort Worth area, according to Mike. And though he acknowledges machine engraving is appropriate in certain applications, hand engraving will always be his

preferred method.

“I once engraved a flagpole with a patriotic inscrip-tion—a sentiment that was something special, passed down to a fellow from his father,” observes Mike. “It was an unusual request, but I loaded my equipment

and off I went …”

With the course of time, some customs are sure to die. But real handiwork is alive and well at Ridglea Watch & Jewelry.

ike the watch he just repaired, Mark Isham moves quietly, efficiently. He is busy but composed…mov-ing parts in even agreement. But for Mark, president and horologist at Ridglea Watch & Jewelry, keeping time is just one part of the bigger picture.

“Our store is special,” he says. “We like to run smoothly and get the job done right but, more importantly, we treat all our customers with friendliness and respect.”
