LECTIONARY BASED SCRIPTURE STUDY

O loving and merciful God, we give you thanks for all the gifts

you have generously placed in our care.

We remember, O God our Father, that you call us to share

those blessings so that our parish community may continue to grow in your love.

We celebrate the gift of your Son’s abiding presence in the Eucharist, who nourishes us to live in your love and share it with others.

We believe that your Holy Spirit will lead us in times when we must let go so that your will may be done.

With Faith in our Future we pray that our joyful giving

care for us.

We entrust our prayer through the intercession of Mary, the Immaculate Virgin, Mother of God, and Joseph the Carpenter, her faithful and loving husband, as we pray in the name of Jesus Christ who leads us to be Welcoming, Transformed and Generous.

Amen.

Your Pastor's Ponderings

THANKS FOR A GREAT TRIDUUM & EASTER EXPERIENCE!

Thanks are due to everyone who helped make the

Sacred Triduum and Easter celebrations such a profound

experience of God alive and well in our midst. On behalf

of Fr. Lijo, Deacon Jim & Debbie Pittman and Deacon Pat

Cater, I’d like to thank our great parish staff, our tremendous

music ministry, and all our faithful volunteers who did so

much and put in many extra hours to enhance our worship

experience and parish campus: you know how much I

appreciate ALL you do to keep us going! May God continue

to bless all of you for your goodness and faithfulness to our

parish!

I’LL BE LEAVING FOR A PILGRIMAGE…

…to the Holy Land. I will be gone from April 9-20. This

pilgrimage is sponsored by the Equestrian Order of the

Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem (EOHSJ). Last September I

was invested as a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher. Invested

members of the EOHSJ are expected to make a pilgrimage

to the Holy Land soon after their investiture. I was in the

Holy Land for a Study Pilgrimage when I was a seminarian

22 years ago, but that doesn’t count for this present need.

Fr. Ron, who was also invested last September, will also

take part in this pilgrimage.

The Spiritual Director of the pilgrimage is our own

beloved Bishop Joseph Pepe. Fr. Ron and I will be his

assistants during the pilgrimage which will have a total of

44 people. Because we will be helping Bishop Pepe and

since there are enough pilgrims attending, both Fr. Ron

and I are able to go for free. Otherwise there is no way I

could afford to go.

So, be assured that you will be remembered in prayer

at all the holy sites of the land where Jesus walked. I ask

that you also please say a prayer for the health and safety

of all of us making this pilgrimage. Those who have been

there recently say that there is much more a chance of

getting hurt in some of the major cities here in the United

States than there is in the Holy Land. So, I’m going with

con#dence that this will be a great experience for all of

us.

I look forward to sharing this experience with you when

I get back. In the time being, Fr. Lijo will be taking care

of things in my absence. He’ll be

staying at the rectory for me while

I’m gone.

Thanks again for your support and

prayers while I’m on this journey of faith!

Peace always,

Fr. James Michael Jankowski

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

ORIGIN OF DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, THE DIVINE

MERCY IMAGE, AND THE CHAPLET

Saint Faustina: Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century, when civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God” and, therefore to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. St. John Paul II explains:

This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church.

~ Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005)

Divine Mercy Sunday: St. Faustina’s Diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example:

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy.

The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the "rst Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary, no. 699)

On May 5, 2000, !ve days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

The Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sancti!cation. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls” (Diary, no. 742).

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Chaplet was also given to St. Faustina with this promise: “Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you” (Diary, no. 1541). “Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. … Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My in!nite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My in!nite mercy” (Diary, no. 687).
