Get to Know Dog Harmony

Dog-Harmony, Inc. is a volunteer-run non-profit organization, made up of passion-ate and determined problem-solving dog lovers who want to make a difference. The goal is to build healthy relationships between humans and dogs to improve the lives of both and reduce the number of dogs that are placed in animal shel-ters.

These individuals work together to accomplish the mission of creating lifelong rela-tionships by providing personalized and ongoing education, support, and training for people and dogs. The key element for these relationships is education – of hu-mans and dogs, no matter what age. That is what makes Dog-Harmony different; the focus is on training and support before, during and after one adopts a dog to make sure the people and dogs in the family have the tools they need to build a successful life together. Adopting a dog is not the end of the relationship – it is just the beginning.

Dog-Harmony, Inc., has been providing services to the residents of Okaloosa and Walton County since 2014. A volunteer-run organization, this group of passionate volunteers has been borrowing space from a small doggy daycare center, and has not had a home of its own. As the programs offered have grown, the space has become tight. In order to continue to meet the needs of the community, Dog-Har-mony, Inc. has begun searching for a new home and is asking the public for mone-tary donations.

Primary Programs of Dog-Harmony

SAFE DOGGY — Early training is important for our children to teach them the keys to pet care and communication, so they may have safe and happy interactions with animals. Dog-Harmony has a successful bite-prevention workshop program, Safe Doggy, that its volunteers take into the community to teach children the basics. This program is so important that Dog-Harmony offers it free of charge. There were over 700 reported incidences of dog bites in Bay County Florida in a year. Eighty-six percent of dog bites among children under the age of six (6) were from dogs known to the family, and more than half occurred in the home. The organization hopes to be able to take the program in the next three years to every school in Bay, Walton and Okaloosa counties.

Primary Programs of Dog-Harmony (Continued)

STOP DOGGY HOMELESSNESS — While teaching our community the requirements for proper pet care is critical, unfortunately many well-meaning dog owners in this area simply don’t have the funds for some of the important basics. To help fill this need Dog-Harmony has a program that donates one neuter monthly free of charge. The Stop Doggy Homelessness program also ensures that dogs that are adopted from Dog Harmony are spayed/neutered.

DOGGY ID — Doggy ID is a monthly microchipping program that allows members of our community to microchip their pets for free, only paying the reduced registra-tion fee. Again, this may help reduce the population of dogs in shelters as the mi-crochip will identify the dog’s home and allow shelters to unite the dogs with their owners.

WE’RE HAVING A DOGGY — To encourage long lasting relationships between dogs and families, Dog-Harmony offers programs to help families prepare for and adjust to a new dog. We’re Having a Doggy is offered to families that are consid-ering adopting a rescue dog from Dog-Harmony or who have recently added a new member to the family. Yes, dogs need to be prepared and learn to adjust to little ones in the family as well.

Dog-Harmony offers all of these programs to the community at little or no cost. Donations from individuals and sponsorships of programs by local businesses are vital to our mission of education and care of dogs and families that live with or around dogs. If you would like to make a donation or for more information about Dog-Harmony, Inc. please visit the website www.dog-harmony.org. For information about Corporate Sponsorships, contact our fundraising coordinator Sharon Stark at 301-318-1853. Dates and times for all of our programs are also posted on the website and on our Facebook page. If you would have any questions please email [email protected].

MEET THE FOUNDER — NANCY BOWN

Nancy Bown is a Destin native and the visionary behind Dog-Harmony. She graduated with a BA from the Univer-sity of West Florida and from the Animal Behavior College in Southern California with a certification in dog training. Following graduation, Nancy continued her education to receive the Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA)*. There are currently only three trainers between Pensacola and Panama City with this specialized training and certification. She is a “Positive Reinforcement” trainer, member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, Canine Good Citizen evaluator, and local evaluator for Inter-mountain Therapy Animals. In addition, Nancy is a mentor trainer to other trainers for the Animal Behavior College and has attended the Karen Pryor Academy.

Nancy owns and operates K9 to 5 Doggie Daycare in Santa Rosa Beach and Canine Con-sulting, offering obedience and behavioral training. She specializes in canine communica-tion and socialization, and teaches Puppy Start Right – an advanced therapy training.

In 2014 Nancy saw first-hand the many homeless dogs in need of forever homes, at times being mismatched with an incompatible family or was returned to the shelter or … because owner and dog weren’t given the proper tools and education for a smooth transition into their new life together. Through donations, community support and a group of dedicated volunteers, Nancy created Dog-Harmony, which is dedicated to help dogs and families live happily together. Dog- Harmony hopes to reduce the population of shelter dogs by offering community programs on bite prevention, spay/neuter, micro chipping, and classes on introducing a dog to a new home. Dog-Harmony is a registered 501 (c) (3) charitable organization.

*The Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge-Assessed exam is offered by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) and administered by computer-based testing facilities throughout the U.S.. Candidates are tested on standards for knowledge and skills in science-based dog training and animal behavior. Trainers are eligible to take the 250-question exam after completing a minimum of 300 hours of dog training within a 3-year period, providing a signed attestation statement from a veteri-narian or a Certified Council for Professional Dog Training certificant, and signing and filing the CCPDT Code of Ethics.

To maintain a CPDT-KA license, trainers are required to complete minimum continuing education hours and renew their certifica-tion every 3 years.

Dog-Harmony’s work has been so successful that it is now in need of a new and larger facility to bring these services to the public. Several exciting fundraising events are being planned including a fun Howl-o-Ween Tennis Tournament and Auction on October 29th at Hidden Dunes Tennis Beach & Tennis Resort. If Inside The Gates readers would like to attend one of these func-tions, volunteer their time, make a donation, or have knowledge of a suitable building for the organization, please contact Nancy Bown at Dog-Harmony for further information.

Do you believe that every dog needs a family, and every family needs a dog? one Beach Club residents Sharon and Bill Stark sure do! The couple and their 6-year-old minia-ture schnauzer, Bogey, moved to Sandestin in 2008 from Wash-ington DC, where Bill had worked in the FDIC and Sharon was an investment strategist. And Bogey? He just enjoyed life to what he thought was the fullest... until the family saw the “most beauti-ful beaches in the world”! Our area’s fabulous beaches, great golf courses, and friendly residents showed Bogey and his “parents” that they had definitely found their paradise!

The Starks first met Nancy Bown, founder of the local non-profit dog education and rescue organization, Dog-Harmony, when Bo-gey polished his socialization skills by attending her K9 to 5 Dog-gie Daycare in Santa Rosa Beach. In 2015, Nancy saw firsthand the many homeless dogs in need of forever homes who were, at times, mismatched with an incompatible family, or returned to the shelter because owner and dog weren’t given the proper tools and education for a smooth transition into their new life together. Through donations and community support, Nancy began helping to get dogs adopted with the right families. As word got around about Nancy’s efforts, Dog-Harmony was created.

Sharon began to volunteer with the group and eventually joined its Board of Directors. She is dedicated to raising funds to provide for the four primary services that Dog-Harmony provides to our
