    BRIAN COX

    The science bitWhen: September 24

    11 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

Scientist turned rock star turned rock star scientist Professor Brain Cox takes us on a journey through space and time at City Hall this month.

Boiling down the biggest ideas into something everyone can understand, Cox will entertain and educate all at the same time. Here’s more…

Brian Cox OBE is a particle physicist, a Royal Society University Research fellow, Professor at the University of Manchester and works on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland. All this means that he knows a little bit more than your Year 8 Science teacher.

He loves sharing what he knows – he’s authored or co-authored nearly 1,000 scientific publications to date.

He’s 48! Some say he has discovered the secret to time travel and simply reappears as his 25-year-old self each time he’s on the telly.

It’s not all books and classrooms; Cox played keyboard in pop group D:Ream, whose hit, Things Can Only Get Better, was the soundtrack of Tony Blair’s rise to power in the 90s. Check out Brian on Top of the Pops on YouTube – and his spectacular tartan outfit.

TV legend Sir David Attenborough has said: “If I had a torch I would hand it to Brian Cox.” High praise indeed!

He says the best person to play him in a movie would be Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka playing him.

He’s worth a follow on Twitter @ProfBrianCox mainly for his responses to flat-Earth theorists, pictures of his cat and, you know, science stuff.

Rather than having a grand idea of himself, Cox defines scientists as the “codified application of common sense... like plumbing.” Simple!City Hall, from £33.50, theatreroyal.co.uk

    PETER HOOK

New wave post-punk electrosynth polymath Peter Hook has more than a few tales to tell of 40 years hard rocking, and his appearance at Sage Gateshead promises the opportunity to hear some of them. Hook will talk about his career in two seminal bands – Joy Division and New Order – and his new book, Substance, which details his life in New Order. He’s a witty raconteur and promises some outrageous anecdotes. Here’s more…

We are horrified to have to report that Hooky is now 60. This means he qualifies for a bus pass. A. Bus. Pass. Peter...nooooo!

It’s 40 years since he and Bernard Sumner formed Joy Division, changing music forever and continuing the revolution with New Order after lead singer Ian Curtis went to the big stage in the sky in 1980.

Hooky stayed with New Order, playing his bass with aplomb, until 2007, when he walked out and declared the band had broken up (a surprise to his bandmates, it seems, and they’re still fighting over it).

Since then he’s been singing, recording, producing and basically being a legend in his own lunchtime, teatime, and (these days increasingly early) bedtime.

A former booze and cocaine addict, Hooky’s been on the wagon for over a decade. He told The Guardian last year: “It’s a wonder any of us are still here: the fact we were friends with Happy Mondays should have been enough to kill us, never mind what we did on our own.”

Hooky and Bernard Sumner have fallen out big style, and they’re fighting it out in the courts. Hooky feels so strongly about it, that he now calls Sumner “twatto”. Rock ‘n’ roll, Pete!

Hooky, who has received death threats from some purists for playing Joy Division and New Order songs with his new band, has also pledged “to f***k New Order in any possible way I can”.

Hooky does not pull his punches. In 2011, he said: “Everyone knows that NEW ORDER without PETER HOOK is like QUEEN without FREDDIE MERCURY, U2 without THE EDGE, SOOTY without SWEEP.” But what about Sue?Sage Gateshead, £7, sagegateshead.com

    17 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK16 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

Some of Newcastle’s big names in education and business welcome the return of the world’s students to the city…

Sean Bullick, NE1 Ltd “Newcastle is Newcastle over the summer and then, suddenly in early September, bang - all over again you hear more than 100 different languages, you’re mingling with people from 152 countries, you overhear animated conversations about specialist subjects you didn’t even know existed, and you remember what a fantastic city we live in!”

Jon Reast, Northumbria University “Newcastle is a fantastic destination to work and study, and I’m sure that the welcome events we’ve put on this year will help our new students realise how important they are, not only to the academic institutions, but also for the city as a whole.”

Prof Richard Davies, Newcastle University “We are proud to have such a diverse and talented body of students who come from all over the world to study here in Newcastle. They make our campus and our city the thriving place that it is and we hope our welcome will show them how much we value them.”

    When: until October 2

Welcome students of the worldIs it a bird? A plane? The call for Batman? The searchlights above the city each night are actually part of #NE1isWelcome - a month-long celebration heralding the arrival of more than 80,000 students from 152 nations to the city.

NE1 Ltd has teamed up with Newcastle and Northumbria universities and Newcastle College to light up the city in welcome and searchlights are beaming out from the roofs of the Theatre Royal, Newcastle Castle, Civic Centre, City Library, Newcastle Sixth Form College, Northumbria University’s City Campus East and Newcastle University’s Bernicia Halls.

The flags of every nation represented by students in the city are also flying outside the Civic Centre until October 2, when a firework display will close a month of welcome events which have had the whole city smiling. The event has proved so popular there are plans to expand it for the arrival of the world’s students in 2017. Want to be part of it? Contact NE1 Ltd. For more info, go to getintonewcastle.co.uk

Tony Lewin, Newcastle College “We like to give all the students a warm welcome, but it’s particularly important for our international students, many of whom have travelled thousands of miles to study here. They’ve chosen to study here because our city embraces international opportunities and the wider cultural value and contribution the students make to our economy.”

Sarah Smith, Sintons LLP “We are fortunate to be able to attract and develop talented students, and students are hugely important to Newcastle’s economy. Many businesses thrive on student trade, and of course students are renowned for enjoying the city’s leisure offering - which is great for our diverse and thriving city.”

Tom Caulker, World Headquarters “With the student re-invasion imminent it’s time to remember the massive boost and diversity their arrival brings back to the city. More importantly, as an independent club owner, it’s time to pack up the baked beans of summer and get the bliddy steak out again! I love the little buggers…”

Tania Vesty, intu Eldon Square “Students play an important role in creating and maintaining the fun, dynamic atmosphere Newcastle is famous for. Student populations have a significant impact on the local economy - leading to investment and redevelopment which benefits all of us within the city and wider region.”

Ollie Vaulkhard, Vaulkhard Group “Students are key to a vibrant city; the streets feel busier, the place more lively and the whole economy steps up a gear. We always look forward to their return, although perhaps not all of their fresher’s weeks antics!”

Nick Forbes, Newcastle City Council “Newcastle is a global city and every year we welcome thousands of students. These students enrich our city and many go on to be ambassadors for Newcastle when they graduate. Every successful city in the world has vibrant, talented and diverse universities and students.”

  • JAY RAYNER JAY RAYNER

    21 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK20 WWW.GETINTONEWCASTLE.CO.UK

Jay Rayner offers food for thought ahead of his latest tour

Restaurant critic and raconteur Jay Rayner has declared himself a latter-day culinary Moses, his new stand up show and book celebrating his 10 Food Commandments addressing burning issues of the day like whether it’s ever okay to covet thy neighbour’s oxen (it is), eating with your hands (very important indeed) and if you should cut off the fat (no). Combining anecdotes and talk of recipes worthy of worship, this show promises much. In advance, we catch up with him to ask some searching questions…

Is food really that funny?Obviously, nobody’s coming to The Stand to hear whether the lamb was overcooked or the fish was raw, but food is a brilliant prism through which to examine the world; politics, emotion, sex - sometimes it’s even about dinner.

You’re always out for dinner – what’s the biggest mistake chefs make?Plates – the lack of them. Please God give us plates, not flat caps and mini wheelbarrows. And have people serve

    The Stand, October 9, £12, thestand.co.uk

it who don’t feel the need to explain the concept to you. And music. I reviewed Blackfriars in Newcastle and suffered a constant Lindisfarne soundtrack. Three hours of Lindisfarne! Who knew they’d done that much music? After my review came out they had a ceremonial CD burning.

If you could only go back to one place to eat again for the rest of your life, where would it be?The Sportsman in Seasalter. It used to be this great unknown gem and I’d sound really clever when I said it, but it’s now been voted number one in the National Restaurant Awards. It’s a tumble-down pub on the coast near Whitstable. There’s no flummery or linen table cloths, it’s just really clever cooking.

What’s your signature dish?I’m happiest when I’m braising. The Ten (Food) Commandments includes a recipe for braised lamb shoulder. When winter comes and it’s been braising for seven hours, that makes me very happy.

How do you feel when you get reviewed as a musician? It’s terrifying. I’m an accidental performer of the piano, but I’m very serious about it. I’ve been properly reviewed once by The Times – a nice fat four out of five stars, you know – but waiting for that review was more terrifying than any other.

Is there any particular world cuisine you’re fond of?I veer between Spanish and Japanese, depending on my mood. I’m basically greedy so it’s very hard for me to narrow it down to one thing or another, but Japanese can always get me going.

Do your friends cook for you? Not much. I have two sets of friends who do invite us round for supper, but we don’t get invited to dinner parties. I wonder why?

McDonalds or KFC, and why?KFC. Why? It’s fried chicken! My son once had a photograph of me eating it which he threatened to put on social media and bribe me.
