Welcome to your DIY Kit!

It’s time to talk! This project is part of the development of the SA Mental Health Commission’s new Mental Health Strategic Plan for South Australia.

The Commission will use your thoughts to develop the Plan to build, sustain and strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of our community.

So, until Wednesday May 31, 2017, we are encouraging people to meet in homes, workplaces, cafés, parks and public spaces around SA to chat, chinwag, converse, debate, discuss, yack and yarn about mental health and wellbeing.

How long will it take? These chats are based around 4 simple questions, designed to take less than an hour.

Yes, I want to be involved – what do I do now?Fantastic! It’s great to have you on board. Now you can download and print out this DIY conversations kit. This kit has everything you need (except the biscuits!) to host a chat.

In this Kit you’ll find: Ways to host a conversation Tips for your role as host Flyer/invitation which you can print out or email to your friends/group Template for recording your notes Permission Form Talent Release forms (one for adults and one for children) for sharing comments,

photos and artwork. The 4 Key Questions Some additional questions - to help the conversation along A registration sheet for people who’d like more information about the

development of the Plan

A checklist for hosting your conversation

Then follow these simple steps:1. Set a Date

It’s important to set your date nice and early. That way, you can give people plenty of notice to come along. Think about when might be easy for people to get together – maybe a lunchtime catch-up or a Sunday afternoon – whatever works!

** Remember, we need to hear from you by Wednesday, 31 May, so please make sure you give yourself time to get your chat responses back to us by then.

2. Get some help Many hands make light work, so get your friends and colleagues to help you! Plan together what you might need and who’ll do what: set up the venue, bring a cake, encourage others to attend and whatever else you might need. This way you can support each other to make talking about mental health and wellbeing easy.

3. Print out a flyer and send out your invitations Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to promote your conversation and get others involved.

4. Start the conversation! a. Welcome everyone and ask them to introduce themselvesb. Outline what you’ll be talking about by going through the information

provided about the SA Mental Health Commission and the Plan (you’ll find this info under the heading “It’s Time to Talk!” at the beginning of this kit.

c. Discuss the questions. It’s up to you how long you would like to discuss them, but we suggest putting aside no more than 10minutes each.

d. Make note of your group’s agreed response/s to each question. You can use the response form page attached.

e. Feedback– send your completed response back to us by 31 May via:Post: SA Mental Health Commission, PO Box 189, Adelaide SA 5000 or Email: [email protected]

5. Next steps? Once you have filled out your response form and sent it back to us, we will include the information in our planning! We can also send your guests updates on where the Plan is up to (just use the Registration Form in this kit).

Let’s get started!

Ways to host a conversation…At the Commission, we know that people prefer to communicate in very different ways. We want to include everyone who wishes to be involved in the development of The Plan. We have developed a range of models for our Conversations – and some of them don’t really involve sitting around and talking at all. We encourage you to explore these and use whichever are good fits for your community group:

online: YourSay online: forum or chat write your story conversations roundtables and groups art

create a zine photovoice create a comic pop-up stall or listening post one-to-one

Each of these are detailed further in the document entitled “Ways to talk with us”. They are also available on the SAMHC’s webpage: www.samentalhealthcommission.com.au/ways-to-talk-to-us

Tips for your role as HostIt’s important to be clear about your role. As a host, it’s your task to create a safe place in which people can explore, express, and share their opinions and ideas. Remember, you don’t need to fix problems or help people to come to an agreement.

Here are a few tips for hosting a great conversation:

Encourage everyone to participate in the conversation, without putting pressure on those who prefer not to.

If people get off track, ask them to hold their thought and come back to it later. Check in with people to be sure you understand them, or ask them to explain more if

you don’t. It’s easy to forget what people have said, so make sure you keep notes on the

template provided.

PermissionsPlease share the Permission Form and Talent Release Forms with everyone attending and make sure everyone understands and is comfortable indicating their preferences.

Community Conversation

The South Australian Mental Health Commission is working on the development of a new Mental Health Strategic Plan for South Australia. But we can’t do that without you!

We want to talk with you to confirm or challenge the research, and hear your responses to questions like:

What’s going on here in SA in relation to our mental health and wellbeing – in our systems and organisations, in our professional and working lives, in our personal lives and relationships?

What’s helping? (What can we build on? What can we showcase or support?) What’s doing harm? (Where can we prevent harm and reduce risks?) How do we support our communities to be mentally healthier? What else should we be aware of when developing a new Mental Health Plan for SA?

This is a big topic, and some of it is really tough. Some people have had great experiences, and some others have had bad experiences. So it’s important to us that we listen well. Listening is not enough to fix the problems, but it’s a vital first step.

We want to listen and we want to help people get talking and working together.

Let’s talk and create a Plan for South Australia that works.

Some additional questions(to help the conversation along)

As we develop the Plan, what is it important for us to know or to find out? What do other people/clinicians /policy makers /the community not understand about your

experience of the issue? What programs, services and/or practices of excellence are you aware of in the areas of

mental health or wellbeing? What is it that makes them a spotlight initiative? What is it important for you to know about mental health? What is it important for you to know about the information, supports and services that are

available for mental health? What do you think we need to do more of or change about the way that mental health is

talked about? What do you think we need to do more of or change about the type of mental health

information, supports and services that are available? What types of information and support would/do help you look after your mental health

most? It is normal to struggle in difficult situations and life transitions. What have you needed, or

would you hope for, at these times? What/who helped, or could help, the way that you managed things? What/who got in the way of how you managed things? How did you, or would you have, described these times to a close friend/confidante? How does your mental health influence your ability to live how you want to live? What helps you most with your mental health? What makes it harder or less easy to cope and manage? What helps you to feel connected and like you belong? What other life experiences/circumstances make your mental health harder to manage? What do you think the biggest challenge is for people and families managing their mental

health? What is your word or way of describing when things are not going ok for you or a loved one? What is your understanding of what leads to mental health issues for people? What is your understanding of what helps people with their mental health? If you could change or recommend one thing to make a difference for mental health what

would you suggest? What difference would this make?
