Sent: Monday, 11 August 2008 11:04 AMTo: [email protected]: [email protected]; [email protected]: internal medicine exam success at the Townsville HospitalDear Richard,I would like to share with you, and with the rest of the school a
significant "win" for internal medicine training at The Townsville Hospital.
We have recently experienced significant success in the very difficult clinical exams for physician training, with an impressive 70% pass rate for our candidates. This follows on from a nearly 90% pass rate in the written exams in March 2008, which is one of the highest in the state. Over the past few months, the physicians at TTH have put enormous effort into preparing the candidates - I have been very impressed and proud to be a part of this collective effort. In previous years, we have had only a handful of candidates attempting these exams, and have had no-where the pass rate of 2008, so we are all very pleased at these developments and proud of all of our candidates.

Final advice…..
Aim to be the best, many lives depend on your knowledge & skills.
Planning ahead is the key to success...Plan your time, money, resource & life.
Little work daily – Check every Friday! Exam should not be a surprise or stress! only in an exam you can kill 50% of your
patients and pass…

Mark Loane: Mark Loane: Qld, Rugby Hero, Qld, Rugby Hero,
Ophthalmologist.Ophthalmologist. Completed his medical degree while still a Wallaby Interest in visual art and landscape – became an ophthalmologist at 28y. By the early ’90s Loane had joined the Queensland Trachoma and Eye
Health Project and for six years he toured distant outposts such as Woorabinda, Birdsville, Thargomindah and Goondiwindi. But while he revelled in the work, he also resolved to build a new, more effective program that used the premier laser equipment and delivery systems.
By all accounts, he has done just that. The Cape York project’s lead optometrist, Rowan Churchill, notes that the system of care Loane devised is being copied in other corners of Australia, such as the Torres Strait. “It’s just a good system,” says Churchill. “It just works. We get great outcomes.”
For his part, Loane reckons his has been a “modest contribution”, one that the 200-odd Australian ophthalmologists working in remote communities and Third World countries make every year. But he intends to keep making it as long as Aboriginal people want him. He never tires of the Outback and its people, “a big space where big characters grow”.
As for what inspires him, Loane nominates his love of Australia and the sacrifices made by his wife, Elizabeth, and two daughters. “This country is a fair and just country, and it’s one that my father and grandfather thought was worth fighting for. You need to give something back – because if you keep on taking, there will be nothing left for your children”
