PEACE

A dove – symbolises peace in the Bible.

Olive Branches – Noah sent a dove out and it came back with an olive branch to show that the earth was no longer flooded.

A rainbow in the Bible after the flood

The V sign was the sign for victory in the 2nd World War but later became an anti-war sign for peace

Designed in 1958 this is the sign for disarmament (getting rid of weapons)

The UN emblem shows the world held in the “olive

branches of peace”.

World peace…

• The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945• The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world

together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people.• There are currently 192 Members of the United Nations. They meet in

the General Assembly, which is the closest thing to a world parliament.

It is World Peace Day on the 21st September every year. This year the theme for this day is

‘The right to peace’and as always on this international day for peace

people all around the world will take part in honouring ceasefires and pray for peaceful answers to

complicated problems.Peace is something we want to see in our world.

Jesus talked a lot about peace.

He said that there would be wars but that we should not be alarmed but that we should strive for peace and to live in harmony (2 Corinthians 13) he told us to encourage one another, be of one mind and live in peace.

When Jesus was going to leave the disciples and go back to heaven when his work on earth was done he told them again Don’t worry…“Peace I leave you with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14v27)

Jesus wants us all to be peacemakers, to be kind to one another and love one another with the kind of love he loves us with. Peace in this world and in your heart starts with you…

“Be still and know that I am

God.”

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;to be understood, as to understand;to be loved, as to love;for it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.Amen.
