Welcome to worship at Northminster!
Thank you for worshipping with us today. If you are visiting with
us this morning we hope you feel the presence of God and the
hospitality of this congregation. If you have any questions about our
church please ask one of the pastors or a greeting host wearing a red
“Ask Me” badge.
SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 21, 2018
* = * Those who are able, please stand.
Congregation responds in bold.
CENTERING THOUGHT
The thing to do, it seems to me, is to prepare yourself so you can be
a rainbow in somebody else's cloud. Somebody who may not look
like you. May not call God the same name you call God - if they call
God at all. I may not dance your dances or speak your language. But
be a blessing to somebody. That's what I think.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Lord Jesus Christ, servant of all,
How embarrassed we are when you call us to be servants!
We work diligently to get our own way.
We want to sit in the best seats
and be respected by everyone.
Even when we try to follow you,
we think about how good we look.
In your mercy, forgive us.
In the power of your Spirit, transform us.
Shape us into people who can love and serve and bless others,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(11:00) Chancel Choir
Draw us in the Spirit's tether,
For when humbly in Thy name,
Two or three are met together
Thou are in the midst of them;
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Touch we now Thy garment's hem.
As the brethren used to gather
In the name of Christ to sup,
Then with thanks to God the Father
Break the bread and bless the cup,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
So knit Thou our friendship up.
All our meals and all our living
Make as sacraments of Thee,
That by caring, helping, giving
We may true disciples be.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
We will serve Thee faithfully.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD
HYMN NO. 755 Alleluia! Laud and Blessing
WEISSE FLAGGEN
A LITANY OF PRAYER AND BLESSING
O God of all blessings, we come before you with full hearts. We
hear the words of the prophet, “Blessed are those who trust in the
Lord, whose trust is the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:7)
And we, once again, declare our trust in you and in you alone.
We hear your words to our ancestors Abraham and Sarah, “I will
bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a
blessing…” (Genesis 12:2)
And we pray to be a blessing to our world.
We hear the words of Proverbs, “Those who are generous are
blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.” (Proverbs 22:9)
And we pray to live generous lives – lives of sharing and
compassion.
We hear the words of the Psalmist, “Happy are the people to
whom such blessings fall; happy are the people whose God is the
Lord.” (Psalm 144:15)
And we give thanks to you for all you have given us.
We hear the words of the apostle Paul, “I do it all for the sake of
the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.” (I Corinthians
9:23)
And we pray we will live our lives for the sake of the gospel.
We hear Paul’s words to the church at Corinth, “Each of you must
give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under
compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to
provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always
having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every
good work.” (II Corinthians 9:7-8)
In this season of abundance, O God, we ponder our blessings.
You have given us enough of everything. May our commitment
reflect eagerness and generosity. May the blessings we
cheerfully share bless this church, this community, and our
world.
And we rejoice with the words of the Revelation, “Amen!
Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and
power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.”
(Revelation 7:12)
Alleluia! Amen! We are bold to pray as Jesus taught us:
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

MUSIC IN WORSHIP
Harold Friedell was an American-born musician, with training in
choral composition and organ playing, as is displayed in this
composition. He was appointed organist at First United Methodist
Episcopal Church in Queens at the age of sixteen, and would then
proceed to hold many other organ and choirmaster positions through
the remainder of his life.
Thomas Tallis lived and worked as a court composer for a number
of different monarchs, including Henry VIII, Edward VI, Queen
Mary, and Queen Elizabeth I. He and composer colleague William
Byrd enjoyed exclusive rights to printing and distributing music,
which allowed him to write a wide variety of songs in many
languages.
