CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Friends in Christ:

Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.


C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin

And cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

By what we have done

And by what we have failed to do.


We have not loved you with our whole heart,

And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.

We deserve your eternal punishment.


For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,

Have mercy on us.

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 CEV

The good news of God's deliverance

The first reading for the 3rd Sunday of Advent is written in Chapter 61 of Isaiah beginning at verse 1.

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 CEVThe Spirit of the LORD God has taken

control of me! The LORD has chosen and sent me to tell the oppressed the good news, to heal the broken-hearted, and to announce freedom for prisoners and captives. 2This is the year when the LORD God will show kindness to us and punish our enemies.

who mourn, 3especially in Jerusalem. He sent me to give them flowers in place of their sorrow, olive oil in place of tears, and joyous praise in place of broken hearts. They will be called "Trees of Justice," planted by the LORD to honour his name.

Psalm 126

The Lord has done great things

for us,

and we are filled with joy.

Psalm 126 R: The Psalm is Psalm 126 1It seemed like a dream when the LORD

brought us back to the city of Zion.

C: 2We celebrated with laughter and joyful songs. In foreign nations it was said, "The LORD has worked miracles for his people."

C: 4Our LORD, we ask you to bless our people again, and let us be like streams in the Southern Desert.

Ready for the coming of the Lord

R: The 2nd reading is written in Chapter five of 1st Thessalonians beginning at verse 16.

praying. 18Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do. 19Don't turn away God's Spirit 20or ignore prophecies. 21Put everything to the test. Accept what is good 22and don't have anything to do with evil.

make you completely holy. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept healthy and faultless until our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 24The one who chose you can be trusted, and he will do this.

John 1:6-8,19-28 CEV

He who comes after me stands among you

M: The Holy Gospel is written in chapter 1 of the Gospel according to St. John beginning at verse 6.

John 1:6-8,19-28 CEV6God sent a man named John,7who

came to tell about the light and to lead all people to have faith. 8John wasn't that light. He came only to tell about the light. 19-20The Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and temple helpers to ask John who he was. He told them plainly, "I am not the Messiah."

John 1:6-8,19-28 CEV21Then when they asked him if he were

Elijah, he said, "No, I am not!" And when they asked if he were the Prophet, he also said "No!" 22Finally, they said, "Who are you then? We have to give an answer to the ones who sent us. Tell us who you are!"
