New life

Thank you Father, for your kindness

For the good things from your hand;

You have made us in your likeness

Made according to your plan.

Earth below, the sky above.

Woman, man, the gift of love. ››

New life

Thank you, Lord, gracious God,

For this precious little one.

Wrap this child in your love,

In the new life of the Son.

New life

Splash of promise with the water,

Breath of Spirit with the Word.

Here in Christ, a new creation,

Here a wonder has occurred.

Joined with Christ down in the earth,

Raised to life through this re-birth. ››

New life

Thank you, Lord, gracious God,

For this precious little one.

Wrap this child in your love,

In the new life of the Son.

New life

Now your new life is beginning

On this special, holy day.

Now your light shines in the darkness

Now the Spirit leads the way.

Raised to live, now born anew

For good works, prepared to do. ››

New life

Thank you, Lord, gracious God,

For this precious little one.

Wrap this child in your love,

In the new life of the Son.

Introduction to the confession of sins

M: Friends in Christ:Let us confess our sins to God our

Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin

And cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

By what we have done

And by what we have failed to do.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

We have not loved you with our whole heart,

And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.

We deserve your eternal punishment.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,

Have mercy on us.

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

First reading

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18 CEV

God's covenant with Abram

R: The first reading for the second Sunday in Lent is written in Genesis Chapter 15 beginning at verse 1.

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

Later the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision,

"Abram, don't be afraid! I will protect you and reward you

greatly.”

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

2But Abram answered, "LORD All-Powerful, you have given me everything I could ask for, except children. And when I die, Eliezer of Damascus will get all I own. 3You have not given me any children, and this servant of mine will inherit everything.”

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

4The LORD replied, "No, he won't! You will have a son of your own, and everything you have will be his.“

5Then the LORD took Abram outside and said, "Look at the sky and see if you can count the stars. That's how many descendants you will have." 6Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD was pleased with him.

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

7The LORD said to Abram, "I brought you here from Ur in Chaldea, and I gave you this land."

8Abram asked, "LORD God, how can I know the land will be mine?”

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

9Then the LORD told him, "Bring me a three-year-old cow, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a dove, and a young pigeon." 10Abram obeyed the LORD. Then he cut the animals in half and laid the two halves of each animal opposite each other on the ground. But he did not cut the doves and pigeons in half.

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

11And when birds came down to eat the animals, Abram chased them away.

12As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and everything became dark and frightening. 17Sometime after sunset, when it was very dark, a smoking cooking pot and a flaming fire went between the two halves of each animal.

Genesis 15:1-12,17,18

18At that time the LORD made an agreement with Abram and told him:

I will give your descendants the land east of the Shihor River on the border of Egypt as far as the Euphrates River.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 27 CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 27. R:1You, LORD, are the light that keeps

me safe. I am not afraid of anyone. You protect me, and I have no fears.

C: 2Brutal people may attack and try to kill me, but they will stumble. Fierce enemies may attack, but they will fall.

PSALM 27 CEV

R: 3Armies may surround me, but I won't be afraid; war may break out, but I will trust you.

C: 4I ask only one thing, LORD: Let me live in your house every day of my life to see how wonderful you are and to pray in your temple.

PSALM 27 CEV

R:5In times of trouble, you will protect me. You will hide me in your tent and keep me safe on top of a mighty rock.

C: 6You will let me defeat all of my enemies. Then I will celebrate, as I enter your tent with animal sacrifices and songs of praise.

PSALM 27 CEV

R: 7Please listen when I pray! Have pity. Answer my prayer.

C:8My heart tells me to pray. I am eager to see your face,

PSALM 27 CEV

R: 9so don't hide from me. I am your servant, and you have helped me. Don't turn from me in anger. You alone keep me safe. Don't reject or desert me.

C:10Even if my father and mother should desert me, you will take care of me.

PSALM 27 CEV

R:11Teach me to follow, LORD, and lead me on the right path because of my enemies.

C: 12Don't let them do to me what they want. People tell lies about me and make terrible threats,

PSALM 27 CEV

R:13but I know I will live to see how kind you are.

C:14Trust the LORD! Be brave and strong and trust the LORD.

C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.

second reading

Philippians 3:17 - 4:1 CEV

Be what you are: citizens of heaven

R: The second reading is written in Philippians Chapter 3 beginning at verse 17.

Philippians 3:17 - 4:1

17My friends, I want you to follow my example and learn from others who closely follow the example we set for you.

18I often warned you that many people are living as enemies of the cross of Christ.

Philippians 3:17 - 4:1

And now with tears in my eyes, I warn you again 19that they are headed for hell! They worship their stomachs and brag about the disgusting things they do. All they can think about are the things of this world.

Philippians 3:17 - 4:1

20But we are citizens of heaven and are eagerly waiting for our Saviour to come from there. Our Lord Jesus Christ 21has power over everything, and he will make these poor bodies of ours like his own glorious body.

Philippians 3:17 - 4:1

Dear friends, I love you and long to see you. Please keep on being faithful to the Lord. You are my pride and joy

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.

The holy gospel

Luke 13:31-35 CEV

Jesus' sorrow over Jerusalem

M: The Holy Gospel is written in Luke Chapter 13 beginning at verse 31.

C: Glory to You O Lord.

The holy gospel

31At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said, "You had better get away from here! Herod wants to kill you.”

The holy gospel

32Jesus said to them: Go tell that fox, "I am going to force out

demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and three days later I'll be through."   33But I am going on my way today and tomorrow and the next day. After all, Jerusalem is the place where prophets are killed.

The holy gospel

34Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me.

The holy gospel

35Now your temple will be deserted. You won't see me again until the time when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord."

This is the Gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to You O Christ.

Prayer after gospel

M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for facing death for our sakes. Protect us under your wings. C: Amen.

Low, the way is low
