Q&A with THORPETHORPE answers questions about his life, experiences, and good memories

Which words describe your personality? Funny, caring, honest, tolerant, friendly.

Describe your strong sides: I am creative and able to use my creativity to solve problems. Whether it is making more engaging lesson plans, connectingwith a student, or solving a problem in my day to day life I can always find a creative solution. I also have a lot of patience which is needed every day as a teacher.

Describe your weak sides: I’m naturally a shy person. Over the years I have learned that breaking out of my comfort zone and being more open with people almost always results in positive interactions. It can just be difficult to over come that initial shyness that I feel.

What is your marital status? In a relationship.

Do you have any children? No.

Which types of sport do you play or have played? Soccer, ice hockey, basketball.

Which other types of sports are you interested in? Cycling.

List any other hobbies you may have or have had:Cooking, reading, traveling.

List which musical instruments you play or have played: Guitar, violin.

Religion:Non-religious.

How many hours of sleep do you get on an average night?7.

Do you eat healthy?I try.

Do you smoke?No.

Do you ride a bicycle? All the time.

How much alcohol do you drink on average per week?I drink approximately 10 drinks a week, intermittently.

Which countries have you visited:Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, United States.

Describe the best holiday you have had: My best holiday was when I traveled to Germany to see my favorite soccer team play in the first division. While my team didn’t win, it was an incredible experience to see my favorite team play at the highest level.

What do you like the most about your own country:My favorite thing about the United States is the cities. Ameri-can cities are composed of people from all over the world and they have brought their art, music, food and stories with them. In quite a few U.S. cities you can get the sense of visiting multiple countries just by going from neighborhood to neigh-borhood.

Who are your idols/heroes/heroines? Astronaut Neil Armstrong is my hero. He was willing to risk his life to further scientific knowledge. After being the first person to walk on the moon, Neil turned down fame so that he could go into education to help grow the next generation of scien-tists.

What are your goals in life? My goal in life is to make life more enjoyable for those that I can. Even if that just means being nice to strangers or hold-ing a door open. I carry this into my professional life as I try to make lessons as entertaining and engaging as possible for my students.

What were your childhood dreams:As I child I wanted to be a professional ice hockey player. I loved sports and was absolutely obsessed with hockey. Most of my free time was spent either playing street hockey or watching any game that was on TV.

Which values do you rank the highest?Honestly is the most important value to me. It is difficult to have any type of meaningful relationship with a person if you can’t trust them.

Which childhood experience made the biggest impres-sion on you? The experience that made the biggest impression on my child-hood was being taken out of my school in my upper middle class neighborhood and transferring to a school in an eco-nomically disadvantaged neighborhood. I was six at the time. Being in that school and building close friendships with the kids in my class taught me that everyone has much more value to them than can be quantified with money. It was a tre-mendous learning experience and not just from an academic standpoint.

Which was your greatest experience or moment? The greatest moment in my life was when I met my girlfriend. Ididn’t know it at the time but when I look back now it is easy to tell.

Happiest: The happiest moment in my life is when I realized how much I love my girlfriend and that I had found the person I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Funniest: I go on a yearly road trip with some friends from college. Those trips are always the funniest, whether we are joking about anything and everything we see or just encoun-tering strange things in the rural parts of the country.

Scariest: The scariest moment in my life is probably any time I was in the car with my old roommate. He drives like he’s in the Indy 500.

Proudest: I had a class that I wasn’t expecting to perform well on a final exam. After getting the results back I found out they were my highest scoring class. That was my proudest moment.

Most dangerous: The most dangerous moment of my life was having a shark swim by while surfing.

Greatest sorrow: The greatest sorrow I have experienced in my life was over the passing of my uncle.

What is your favorite color? Green. I like green because it reminds me of nature and can have a calming effect on people.

What is your favorite animal? Dogs are my favorite animal. They almost always bring joy and excitement anywhere they go.

What is your favorite kind of food? My favorite foods are curries. I love the amount of flavor packed into a curry and they always have vegetarian options available.

What is your favorite kind of music? I listen to punk rock more than anything else. There’s a lot of energy in the music. However, while playing guitar I prefer to play jazz.

What is your favorite kind of car? Cars aren’t very important to me, but I prefer to have small efficient cars. My current car is a Honda Fit.

What is your favorite kind of pet? My favorite pet is a dog. They are usually happy to go along with any activity and encourage a little bit of exercise by need-ing to be walked.

What is your favorite time of year? Autumn. I enjoy the crisp weather, Halloween, and pumpkin flavored things.

What is your favorite book and/or author? The American writer and novelist Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is my fa-vorite author. His books are always thought-provoking.

What is your favorite movie and/or director? The American filmmaker Wes Anderson makes my favorite movies. All of his movies are visual masterpieces, with hilari-ous stories.
