Welcome to this information event about IFA2, the new interconnector linking the British and French electricity transmission systems.

We have been building IFA2 since the start of 2018, and are making good progress. However, there’s still a lot of work to do before we go live in 2020.

This information event provides an update on what we’ve done so far, and what we’ll be doing over the next few months.

Please let any of the team members here know if you have any questions. You can also contact us using the details below.

We’re building the converter station at the site off Vulcan Way, near Solent Airport. This will convert electricity between Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC).

Since the start of the year, we’ve laid the foundations for the converter station. These include more than 700 piles, which will support the converter station buildings.

We are now erecting the converter station buildings. We are starting with the control building, and then will move onto the larger buildings. We expect to carry this work out over the Winter.

We’ll then fit out the site ready for the delivery of transformers in Summer 2019. There will be four, large deliveries, and we’re currently investigating using the Solent and a slipway at Daedalus to minimise the impact to the road network.

Once we have more details of the route and timeline for delivering the transformers, we will update the local community.

We recently appointed I&H Brown to construct the public open space to the north of Daedalus Airfield, bounded by Gosport Road to the north and Broom Way to the east.

Our next steps are to prepare the site for planting. We do this by clearing any existing vegetation and stripping back the existing topsoil.

We are currently in the process of installing post and wire fencing around the boundary of the Open Space Development. We are also constructing the footpaths, starting in the east and working our way westwards towards our compound.

We will then create the viewing mound, which will eventually provide views out across Solent Airport. We’ll do this using materials taken from across the site.

Once the viewing mound has been formed, we will look to complete the remaining earthworks and form the bunds which are due to screen the Converter Station.

The HVAC and HVDC cables will connect to the Converter Station by running the cables along one of the runways at Solent Airport.

We’re carrying out this work in two phases. Until Spring next year, we’ll continue installing ducts for the cables. This involves digging trenches in 50m-100m sections, installing the ducts and then closing the trenches. We’ll then pull the cables through the ducts in late 2019.

At points, the cables will need to cross taxiways on the airfield. We are carrying out this work in the Winter as this is the quietest time at the airfield.

We are working closely with the airfield management to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of airfield users throughout the construction period. We’ll continue to keep airfield users directly informed about our work.

WEST GATE ENTRANCE TO AIRFIELD

The HVAC and HVDC cables will come onshore at Monks Hill beach.

All work will take place within a compound in the eastern part of the car park. We’ll access this using a purpose-built haul road through a field off Crofton Avenue to the north of the car park. This will mean full public access to the western part of the car park; the beach and the beach huts are preserved throughout the construction period.

Our work will consist of the excavation of trenches to install the cable ducts, backfilling and reinstatement plus the construction of 3 transition joint bays in the car park which will be backfilled and reinstated after completion of the jointing works.

We expect to begin this work in January and finish by November 2019.

We need to lay cables between the beach and the airfield. This involves crossing Stubbington Lane and Crofton Avenue. We are working closely with Hampshire County Council to manage this work appropriately.

We plan to close one lane of Stubbington Lane at a time for a three-week period in February 2019. We will put traffic management in place during this period.

We are also proposing to close Crofton Avenue completely for a period of around a week in February 2019. In this time, we’ll put in place a diversion down Sea Lane to maintain access to the residences and Monks Hill beach car park.

The HVAC cables linking Daedalus and Chilling and the HVDC cables connecting UK to France are a vital part of IFA2.

In 2018, we’ve been carrying out surveys and completing route clearance work to prepare the offshore route for installation of the cable.

We will carry out the work to lay these cables in 2019. We’ll install the cables using large specialist vessels which are able to transport and lay long sections of cables (up to 100 km). Some cable joints will need to be made at sea during the installation process.

The Cable Enterprise will be used to lay the HVDC cables and the Ulisse barge will be used to lay the nearshore HVAC cables. All cables will be surfaced laid and then a specialised burial tool will be used to ensure the cables with be buried under the seabed.

We recognise that the Solent is a busy waterway. We’ll continue to engage directly with users of the Solent to ensure that any impacts from our work are appropriately managed.

Engaging with the local community and local schools is very important to all of us at IFA2. We recognise the importance of getting more people in to work in the construction and engineering industries. That’s why we are always looking for new opportunities to improve local skills and employment.

We’ve already made a number of work placements available to students from Fareham College and we are working to make even more available in the coming terms. We’ve also gone into local schools to talk to pupils about safety and we shall be starting a new round about engineering as well as careers in STEM.

We’ve recently kicked off the Business Consulting Project run in conjunction with Portsmouth University Business School where 5 students will be required to apply the theory that they have learned to produce successful outcomes for the project in the UK.

Next stepsThe timeline below shows our next steps at each of the IFA2 construction sites.

We’ll continue to keep local people updated throughout the construction process. Our website, ifa2interconnector.com, now features an interactive map with information about planned activities in different areas.
