1 WELCOME TO THE SECRETS OF UNDERSTANDING PENTECOSTAL & GOSPEL MUSIC This course is designed for those who already know major, minor, seventh, and suspended 2 chords. They already have a basic understanding of how to play and may even already play in their church full time or part time. They understand how to read chord sheets and can play fairly proficiently, but they do not understand what they are playing. This course will teach you how to understand what you are playing using the Musical Roman Numeral System so that you can understand what you are playing and know what chords and fills and runs that you can play with it. It will also teach you how to recognize chord movements and progressions by ear by using this system and by studying dierent options for chords with this system. The latter part of this 12 lesson course gives a brief review over the basic chords and teaches you how to recognize chords by ear, giving you a system to do it. It then focuses on how to play more advanced chords than majors, minors and sevenths and teaches you how to use these advanced chords in your playing and how to recognize these chords in progressions and when played by themselves. WELCOME TO THE SECRETS OF UNDERSTANDING PENTECOSTAL & GOSPEL MUSIC

This course is designed for those who already know major, minor, seventh, and

suspended 2 chords. They already have a basic understanding of how to play

Let’s learn...The MUSICAL ROMAN NUMERAL SYSTEM

Roman Numerals are the numbers the Romans used to count with.(They used the letter “i” for 1 and the letter “V” for 5. Keep reading...)

The Roman Numeral System is the key to playing by ear.

To use it, we simply give each note of the major scale anumber.

For example, C is 1 (I), D is 2 (ii), E is 3 (iii), F is 4 (IV), G is 5 (V), A is 6 (vi), and B is 7(vii).

Whenever the Roman Numeral is uppercase, that means it is a MAJOR chord.Whenever the Roman Numeral is lowercase, that means that is a MINOR chord.

SUBSTITUTION POSSIBILITIES

AUGMENTED CHORDS are substituted in the same way as a 7th. In 4th movements such as I to IV or V to I.

AUGMENTED 7ths can be substituted anywhere an augmented chord can be played.

DIMINISHED CHORDS are substituted mainly on your vii*­III­vi progression or your iii* ­ VI ­ ii progression.

HALF DIMINISHED 7th CHORDS can be substituted anytime the vii is a diminished chord.

In jazz, anytime you have a major chord, you can replace it with a SIXTH CHORD. This works in gospel music too.

SUSPENDED 2 CHORDS can be substituted on any major chord.

Fully Diminished Chords (root, b3, b5, bb7)

Here is the technical way for making a Fully Diminished Chord. You take your root, you flat your 3rd, your flatyour 5th (which makes a regular diminished chord ­ Cdim ­ C Eb Gb ­ for example) and then you flat your flatted 7th.

So you basically take a DOMINANT 7th chord (C7 = C E G Bb for example) and flat every note in it except forthe root note.

SUBSTITUTING FULLY DIMINISHED CHORDS

Rule 1: Substituting fully diminished chords is very simple. You only substitute them right before you go to aminor chord.

In other words...

Going to Am7? Substitute G#dim7.

Going to Dm7? Substitute C#dim7.

Get it? Just substitute the note a half step down from the minor chord that you are going to.

Note the strong use of this in “Worthy” and “Amazing Grace.” This works, however, in almost song.

Rule 2: Substitute a fully diminished chord on your #4 after the IV chord chord and before the I/V chord in a fastor medium “jazzy” or “fast Pentecostal” type song.

Notice the use of this in “There Is No Telling.”

It works in most of your faster songs though. Very common ending movement on faster songs is

Forming Augmented 7ths with a #9

We make an augmented 7th #9 (E7#5#9) in the following way.

Let’s look at E7#5#9 for example.

Step 1: Play a major chord and add the b7th on the top of the chord in the FORMAL way. This gives us E G# B D

Step 2: Sharp the 5th. (Make it an augmented 7th)This gives us E G# C D

Step 3: Add the 9th of the chord (F#) to the TOP of the chord and sharp it again also. This gives us G# C D G. (Wedrop the E note and play it in the LH only.)

Therefore E7#5#9 = G# C D G with E in the LH.

So an augmented 7th with a #9 is made up of the

3rd, #5, b7th, and #9.

Eleventh Chords and Minor Eleventh Chords in C

To make eleventh chords simply play the major chord a whole step down from the root.Example: C11 = Bb/C; G11 = F/GThe formal way to make an 11th chord is to take the b7, 9th, and 11th of the major scale.Example: C D E F G A B C D E F

There is only one rule for substituting thirteenth chords.

Anytime there is an eleventh chord, you can substitute a thirteenth chord.

Any time you do a single note walkup (For example a simple C to F walkuplike in a fast song.)

Try replacing the LH walkup C­D­Eb­E­F with C13­D13­Eb13­E13­F13.
