ePD exPlanationEPDs are “Expected Progeny Differences”. They are a use-ful tool in selection. EPDs incorporate the individual animal with its ancestry performance. EPDs do not compare across cattle breeds. They are individual-based per breed. EPDs in-dicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bull’s progeny. The accuracy of EPDs for calendar year bull calves is generally above 20% (one out of five times) so use it cautiously as one of several selection tools.

You can’t say enough about this guy’s’ mother. For the third year running she has one of the top bulls in the bull pen. 15H is a moderate, big barreled female that has a great udder. A solid black, smooth made bull out of cow that produces a good one every year. I mentioned that these Octane bulls are like peas in a pod, well the next three bulls prove it. Wide topped, huge hipped a little extra length and super hair. This bull has that something extra with a strong herd bull head. Some of our best cows had bull calves in 2013, well this guy’s mother has continuously produced bulls for the Rebels Sale. Some cows are just bull producers and 40N is one of those females. She has produced bulls in 6 out of the 10 bull sales. We try to keep some of the females but they tend to go to female sales. Hello and welcome to the 10th Annual Rebels sale! I would like to start by congratulating the Kaskiw’s on 30 years as Simmental breeders. Second I would like to recognize our new consigners this year, the Downey’s and More’s, two operations that I feel fit well into this sale.This will be my 4th year involved with the Rebels group and a bit of a change in what we have on offer, 2012 presented quite a few challenges at breeding season and as you can see we are bringing fewer bulls to town, this has to do with trying a few new bulls as we need something to use on Red Force daughters! I apologize for the lack of pictures as the winter has continued to present many chal-lenges and photographing the bulls seemed to get put behind the day to day care of the cow herd. I would like to thank my parents for all their hard work with the day to day chores while I am at work. This winter would have been difficult without your help. When viewing the bulls, please take note of their birthdates. They are quite a bit younger than a lot of the features. I typically don’t start calving til mid February and end in April, so bringing a bull to town at 11 months of age is a bit disillusioning compared to 14 month old calves, also incase you need the bull tomorrow consider his youth.

Cowboys look here, dark red, powerful and heavy haired. A bull that would really produce an impressive pen of steers. The Redlands cat-tle have a bit more horsepower off the hop that could be contrib-uted to the extra length of body and cold climate that the cows had to endure last winter. The youngest bull in our offering but maybe the best, long bodied, moderate with style to burn. I am always excited when 446P calves she has been as consistent a cow as I own, and I’m proud to bring this calf to town. 446P was Ken Frederickson’s pick of the heifers at Stulberg’s dispersal where he bought her for me. A replica of his brothers, long bodied and thick made. This is 818U’s fourth calf. She is part of a great group of females we selected out of the Kimlake dispersal and they have all earned their keep. Sheila’s first calf is a Red Force female that is at the top of my list for flush-ing. Her second was a beautiful General Lee female that we unfortu-nately lost. Her third was the feature heifer that we brought to town last spring, and managed to buy back into after the sale. Needless to say I have the utmost confidence in this cow family and all of its production.

Another Redlands calf and one of the best. A standout from day one - thick and powerful, with that all important white “money “stripe on his face. A calf I really like, definitely usable to pound the scales down and produce the sought after replacement females. His mother is a Roots x Ja-hari. I think we all know Jahari. Roots was a past high selling bull to Quan-tocks, anchor Lazy U and the Harland’s where he walked in the heifer pen and did an outstanding job. We bought a package of females from LWC and as a group the Roots females are the most consistent and productive females displaying a lot of longevity with perfect udders. I like this bull more and more as we get closer to the sale, his mom is gonna calve off the hop again this year.

The only two year old this year and a full brother to our high seller from last year. He’s going to be a bit leaner than last year’s bull as he is still roaming with my herd bulls as I write this but he is, what he is, quality! I really am leaning more and more to these two year old bulls they’re not pushed. Slowly brought along their first winter, tossed out in the bush all summer and then reintroduced to feed in late fall, a more realistic ap-proach to the cattle industry not unlike the conditions these yearlings will experience in their first season only he’s through it, bigger and ready to service cows. Take advantage. As a calf, 92Z showed more growth and muscle shape than his brother at the same age. Oh did I mention he’s the ONLY Red Force in the sale?

We are pleased to have been invited to consign our bulls to the “Rebels of the West”, joining this group of aggressively progressive Simmental breeders. Our bulls were not creep fed as calves and after weaning were hand fed a moderate energy ration formulated with a target gain of three pounds a day. These two management decisions allow us to evaluate their true genetic potential, and will also promote their soundness and longevity as herd bulls. They have tested BVD-PI negative and are tie broke and quiet. They are fully vaccinated as part of our comprehensive herd health program including their initial and booster Fusogard (foot rot) vaccination. Our three yearling bulls are sired by MRL Destination 91Y who was the $46,000 high selling red bull at the McMillan 2012 Bull Sale, and he gives us good maternal and carcass EPD’s in his offspring.

A dark red stout moderate framed bull who’s post weaning gain was 25% above the target, indicating efficient feed conversion. Good bulls come from good cows. His mother Haas Ranch U42 produced our high selling yearling bull each of the last two years - one to Workman Farms in 2012 and the other to Routledge Stock Farms in 2013. Tested homozygous polled.

A bull we held back last year to use cleanup after AI. With his clean smooth structure and calving ease genetics, we used him on heifers as well as cows. As a young calf, visitors picked him out because of his extra stoutness. He’s not the biggest bull, but efficiency is inherited and his actual weaning weight of 815lbs was 63% of his mothers weight. If his heifer calves produce like his mother, that’s all you could ask for.

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Rebels of the West Bull Sale. For our first time here we are bringing a small group of bulls which represents the style of cattle we like - deep and long, with lots of hair to survive our winters and dispositions that are second to none. We look forward to visit-ing with you at Virden and if we can be of any help before the sale give us a call.

Our Murray sons over the years have been very consistent. Eye appeal with performance is what we have come to ex-pect and this red blazed face bull fits right in. His mother is a Black Edition cow that has been flushed and is turning into a leading black cow in the herd. Downey 314A will be easy to find sale day.

If you are looking for a black bull to add length of body, easy fleshing, with tons of depth this guy will do it for you. It is hard to find length and depth in one package but Tanker seems to do that very consistently. We have always liked long bulls for two reasons, they make for easier calving and the calves in the fall will weigh to put that extra money in your pocket.

Here is our first 103Y son to sell. 103Y fathered by the great Predator was a member of our Supreme Pen of Bulls at Agribition and has turned into one of the most powerful bulls in the breed and is prov-ing that greatness is in his blood. 356A resembles the Predator sons so well, unbelievable top and thickness, hair to no end. What sets this guy apart is his mother, Black Edition X Black Bear, no better cow maker in the business. The benefits in this guy are plenty and great. 215Z has really ma-tured over the months into a well-balanced and beefy herd bull. He is very appealing and has a very good maternal background behind him. His mother, 607X, comes from one of the best commercial cow families on the farm. His mother has a fantastic 103Y daughter on her this winter and had an even better 105Y daughter last year. 215Z has the added benefit of being a son of the well performing “Hustler” bull. This guy is beefy and thick with a great performing pedigree. Don’t pass this guy up!

What a bull! 232Z is favoured by us and by anyone who has come to look at the bulls. This guy is as long as they can come and still has a pile of depth. He is just a tank! He also is backed by one of our cow favorites on the farm. 690W is a cow that doesn’t disappoint. We have a daughter in our herd off her who compliments her mother quite well. 690W is one that we hope to keep a bull for ourselves off of. 232Z is a correctly made individual whose calves will wean off heavy and sell big. Lots of money potential in this guy.

He’s a stubby son out of our “On Star” foundation female. 245Z is an im-pressive individual and is one that over the months has matured very well. This guy has an interesting history behind him. 266Z is the last nat-ural born son of the famed “Centerfold” matron. She is one of the foundation Simmental matrons in the industry being home to top breeders all over Canada. She had huge impacts in their herds and her progeny continue to carry on her legacy. 266Z will just do that and more. He is history in the making. We used him on our purebred herd and will be having some of his progeny in February. We quite like the bull in all honesty. He’s thick, long, deep and eye appealing. For being a young bull and losing his mother only after a month, he’s really an attribute to her legacy. The greatness is in the blood.

This guy was a very well appreciated individual last year. His young age was the reason why we kept him over and we are happy we made that decision. 272Z from a young age has always had the bull look to him. He’s a well-muscled bull that has style and eye appeal. He’s got a nice set of feet and legs and very large testicles to boot. 272Z comes from one of the better females on the farm. 17U is a well producing cow that is a tank. She is broody and is one that we are quite proud of. She doesn’t disappoint, and neither does her progeny. A bull with lots of opportunities.

The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale location unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been made prior to the sale. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should the purchaser fail to settle for his purchase, Bouchard Livestock Ltd reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage, either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale, together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released. The owners, Bouchard Livestock Ltd. and sale staff have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment and/or who has not made prior credit arrangements prior to the sale with the owners and/or Sale Management.

BID - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction. No by-bidding will be permitted. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.DISPUTES - In cases of disputes, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.PURCHASER’S RISK - Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.ANNOUNCEMENTS from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY - The proper Registration of Recordation paper, as the case may be, will be duly transferred and furnished to the buyer for each animal after settlement has been made.SHIPPING - Assistance will be given in making shipment after the sale, but Sale Management or Seller assumes no risk. Expenses incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchasers are requested to furnish shipping instruction when making settlement.GUARANTEE - All animals will carry standard breeding guarantee as specified by the applicable Canadian breed Association. At no time shall the seller’s liability exceed the purchased price of the animal.EXCEPTION TO GUARANTEE - In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, the guarantee shall be null and void. In the cases of bulls, they are guaranteed to breed naturally according to applicable Canadian breed As-sociation guarantee, but no guarantee is given that semen from any bull will freeze.HEALTH - It is the buyer’s responsibility to determine health requirements for importing any animal into his province or state.
