Mahlangu, Esther Nikwambi (PhD hc) Artist Esther Nikwambi Mahlangu was born in Middelburg, Mpumalanga on 11 November 1935. She began painting at the age of ten, being taught the art of Ndebele homestead wall painting and beadwork by her mother and grandmother, according to tradition. To this day, despite her fame, she remains primarily motivated by her African heritage. Her work came to international attention in 1989 after her inclusion in the important exhibition, Magiciens de la terre, held in Paris. In 1991 she was commissioned by BMW to paint their latest model for the BMW Art Car Series, the first person from outside Europe or the United States to do so. Her designs were reproduced on the tails of British Airways aircraft and on the new Fiat 500. In 2017 she was celebrated with a mural on a Tribeca boulevard in New York. In collaboration with Swedish fashion designer, Eytys, her designs were embroidered on to the Doja Mahlangu series, reaching the ramp of more than one European Fashion Week. Over the past three decades, Esther Mahlangu has exhibited both mural and canvas paintings throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America, also capturing the imagination of more than one generation on social media through charitable campaigns. In 2017 she collaborated with singer John Legend to raise awareness and raise funds for the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Today, her works are to be found in major private collections and in many galleries and museums around the world. In 2015, for example, she completed a series of large murals at the Virginia Museum of Art in Richmond, USA. As a national icon and custodian of heritage, she has been honoured with awards and medals by government many times, and by more than one South African president. Lesser known is the extent to which Esther Mahlangu remains primarily rooted in, and motivated by, her cultural heritage and her home village of Mthambothini in Mpumalanga. Aged 82, she has outlived all her children, and is a respected grandmother and great grandmother of many youngsters. With this honorary doctorate, we recognise her legacy as a cultural entrepreneur who skilfully negotiates local and global worlds, and as an educator. Indeed, as a visionary individual, she traverses what to others are insurmountable political barriers. In the late 1980s, when the KwaNdebele and Moutse region erupted in anti-apartheid violence, she was breaking down barriers in her own way, being invited during this time to participate in the groundbreaking Magiciens de la terre exhibition, a significant achievement for a black female artist at the time. The curators asked her to paint the walls of a life-sized replica of her Mthambothini home for the exhibition, and amidst wide press coverage, the thought came to her that if the world could not come to her people and witness Ndebele cultural expression, she would take the language of Ndebele art to the world. As a traditionalist, she subsequently made the significant decision to paint her abstract Ndebele designs on canvas and to sign and date each one.

In order to ensure survival of the Ndebele arts, Esther Mahlangu teaches many youngsters at her home, but also shares her expertise via a project that aims to document Southern African visual culture as the expression of a diversity of inherited local knowledge systems that date back to before the colonisation of Southern Africa. The project develops arts skills-based learning methodologies for the formal classroom that are cognitively authentic. This visual language of learning supports arts education and makes abstract subjects, such as mathematics, accessible for rural learners who struggle with English textbooks. In the context of current debates in South African institutions of higher learning on questions of decolonisation of the curriculum, Esther Mahlangu is a living example of how authentic African knowledge systems can be articulated meaningfully and sustainably. In her, we have an icon worthy of being looked up to by the next generation of creatives. The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture is greatly honoured to confer the degree of Philosophiae Doctor honoris causa upon her.
