Welcome to the Essex
& Herts Air Ambulance Challenge!
The aim of this challenge is to raise awareness of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) and to raise vital funds towards keeping the Charity operational. On completing the challenge, please order your Challenge Badges on the order form at the back of this resource. All proceeds from badge sales will go towards Essex & Herts Air Ambulance.
The EHAAT challenge is divided into four sections:
1. Essex & Herts Air Ambulance2. Helicopters3. Air4. Fun Fundraising
To complete the challenge you must complete a minimum of one activity for each section. This challenge is for all ages so there are a variety of activities to reflect this. Have fun discussing with your group which tasks to choose.
Remember to publicise your Fun Fundraising and send money raised to Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, The Business Centre, Earls Colne Business Park, Earls Colne, Colchester, Essex CO6 2NS.
**For items followed by an asterix you will find additional resources attached.**
1. Essex & Herts Air Ambulance
An Air Ambulance is very different to a land ambulance. This section is all about Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, Paramedics and First Aid. You must complete a minimum of one activity from this section.
**For items followed by an asterix you will find additional resources attached.**
Learn how to make an emergency call.
Learn how to take a pulse.
 Learn CPR.
Earn a First Aid Badge or Certificate.
Complete the Wordsearch (level 1 and 2).*
Scenarios – act out an accident scenario for other members of your group to attend to.
Teddy bears – try out your bandaging skills on a teddy or make a stretcher for a cuddly toy and have a stretcher race – if teddy falls off, you’ll have to start again!
2. Helicopter
This section of the challenge looks at all different types of helicopter. You must complete a minimum of one activity from this section.
Find some natural helicopters – search for sycamore seeds. Try dropping them. Can you count how many times they twirl? Which fly better, double or single seeds?
Make your own helicopter using craft materials. There are some good ideas at these websites: http://www.first-school.ws/activities/crafts/transportation/helicopter.htm http://www.primaryscience.ie/media/pdfs/col/paper_helicopters.pdf http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/family/paper-helicopters.htm
 Label the helicopter*
The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance is red and yellow. Design your own helicopter livery.
 Make your own Whirly Bird.*
 Watch a helicopter land/take off.
How does a helicopter work? Do some research and share your findings.
Build an electronic circuit to launch a helicopter.
Visit the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance at one of our events and sit inside – make sure you take a photo!
Go on a helicopter ride – this could be at a fairground or theme park or, if you’re really lucky, on a real helicopter.
Colour in a picture of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance.*
**For items followed by an asterix you will find additional resources attached.**
3. Air
This section of the challenge looks at the air around us as well as encouraging groups to air their findings about EHAAT in the local media. You must complete a minimum of one activity from this section.
What is air made of? Find out about what surrounds us.
Malteser games – Maltesers are full of little air bubbles - using a straw can you transfer Maltesers from one plate to another? This could be done as a relay race to make it really tricky. Can you keep a Malteser in the air by blowing through a straw?
 Make a balloon rocket.
Fresh Air – hold a meeting outdoors. Perhaps try twirling like rotor blades on a roundabout or flying through the air on a swing at your local park.
Use your air to blow bubbles. Does the shape/size of your bubble wand affect the shape/size of the bubbles? Experiment with different objects to see which will make a bubble (funnels and cut off plastic bottle necks make good blowers, but what about buttons or cotton reels?).
Get on air – record a jingle about the work of EHAAT. See if you can get it played on your local radio station.
Find out 5 facts about EHAAT and present your findings: make a poster to display at school or your meeting place, give a talk to your group, prepare a Powerpoint presentation etc
Ask your friends and family to “like” the EHAAT Facebook page.
Invite an Asthma nurse to visit your group. Perhaps you can measure your peak flow and see who has the most puff!
Try and get interviewed by a local news team about your fundraising – newspapers/parish magazine/radio station.
Advertise your fundraising for EHAAT on a local “What’s on Guide” or Social Media site – Remember to follow your organisations guidelines for safe internet use.
REMEMBER! Send in copies of any of your media successes to [email protected]
**For items followed by an asterix you will find additional resources attached.**
4. Fun Fundraising
Essex & Herts Air Ambulance can only keep going if the running costs of £500,000 a month are met. It is funded purely on donations so choose a Fun Fundraising activity to help keep your Air Ambulance flying. The ways to donate are overleaf.
Perhaps you would like to join with other units and set a sky-high fundraising target. For reaching the following targets you could ask to arrange the following visits: £100 - Visit from an Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Volunteer. £250+ - Visit one of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance air bases in either Earls Colne or North Weald (Please note, you will have to provide your own transport to and from the air base.)
Some fundraising ideas include:
Take part in the A Very British Afternoon Tea event. See EHAAT website for details.
Choose whether to ‘Go Red’ or ‘Go Yellow’ during National Air Ambulance week in the middle of September. Pick a colour and wear it, bake it, make it or challenge it! See EHAAT website for details.
Hold a sponsored event of your choice.
Go bag packing at a local supermarket. Contact EHAAT to borrow collecting tins/buckets.
Hold a bake sale – perhaps try decorating your cakes and cookies with red and yellow icing or even draw on helicopters with icing!
Challenge each member to fill a money box with small change.* Collect the boxes together and make a helicopter picture or the EHAAT logo with the coins before counting them up.
A poster is included in the extras at the back of this pack which you can use to let everyone know about your fundraising event!
