Building a Diverse & Inclusive California Bar The California Bar Foundation is committed to building a California State Bar representative of the communities it serves. Our Diversity Scholars include law students from non-majority backgrounds; some raised in the foster care system; some surviving life-altering health problems; and some enduring childhoods filled with poverty. Our Commitment Our Diversity Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to rising first-year law students from communities underrepresented in Californiaʼs legal profession. With ever-rising law school costs – average law school debt is now above $100,000 – the need has never been greater.

2015 Diversity Scholarship Underwriting

The Diversity Scholarship First-year law students at California law schools with financial need and a demonstrable interest in making an impact in their community are eligible for scholarships of $7,500. Last year, the California Bar Foundation funded 33 Diversity Scholars. Your Invitation As an organization sharing our commitment to a diverse and inclusive legal profession we invite you to underwrite a Diversity Scholarship. Your financial equitable commitment of $10,000 provides a law student from an underrepresented community with funds to cover tuition, books and fees as they begin their legal career. Your organizationʼs benefits include:

• Prominent placement and recognition in media and marketing materials • Tickets to and recognition at our Annual Scholarship Reception • Mentorship opportunity with your named scholars • Recognition as a member of the Foundationʼs Leadership Circle in our Annual Report and on our website

Words cannot fully describe how grateful I am, and will forever be. I managed to pay my full tuition bill, and pay for gas to get me to school.

This past semester, I excelled and I shined. I was so challenged especially by my Contracts law class, and as a result, I grew…Even some of my

professors have taken me aside to tell me, "You will be a great lawyer."

Client Underwriting Diversity Scholarship Program

Clients demand that outside counsel demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion and staff legal teams with diverse and inclusive legal professionals. Your clients expect outside counsel to represent the community at large. Demonstrate your commitment to a diverse and inclusive legal profession through our new Client Underwriting Diversity Scholarship program. This program allows a firm to underwrite a Diversity Scholarship in honor of a valued client or business associate. Your firmʼs financial commitment increases our capacity to meet the financial needs of students from diverse backgrounds as they begin law school while honoring a valued client and strengthening the firm/client relationship. The Diversity Scholarship Our Diversity Scholarship offers a rising first year California law student from a traditionally underrepresented community a financial head start on covering the ever-increasing costs of a legal education. Your firmʼs Diversity Scholarship underwritten on behalf of a valued client helps a law student focus on studying rather than worrying about how to cover tuition, fees or books. The Benefits to Your Organization Significantly, your firmʼs Diversity Scholarship honors a valued client and builds stronger client relationships, as you continue the work of building a diverse and inclusive California legal profession. Benefits include:

• Prominent placement and recognition in media and marketing materials for you and your client • Tickets to and recognition at our Annual Scholarship Reception for you and your client • Mentorship opportunity with your named scholars • Recognition of you and your client as a member of the Foundationʼs Leadership Circle in our

Annual Report and on our website

We invite you to underwrite and name a California Bar Foundation Diversity Scholarship in honor of valued clients.

The Client Underwriting Diversity Scholarship is a meaningful way for us as a firm to develop client relationships and honor our

general counsel clients. This program is more attractive than purchasing a table to an event or other similar opportunities.

Our client really gets a chance to connect with a student from an underrepresented community. CMO - AmLaw 50 Law Firm

Jordyn Biship is a first-year student at University of California, Hastings College of Law. Jordyn received a California Bar Foundation Diversity Scholarship in 2014. Motivated by the devastating hardships her family suffered, she plans to use her law degree to represent clients coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. A top performer in college, Jordyn worked her way through California State University, East Bay. She is proud to be the first in her family to graduate from college. Jordyn is already pursuing her goals of representing the disenfranchised and disadvantaged. She is working towards a practice in Indian law, family law and youth advocacy, and in the summer between first and second year she is gaining valuable real-world experience. For this summer, Jordyn will work with the Lakota Peopleʼs Law Project in South Dakota. This agency advocates for the rights of Lakota parents and families. Jordyn has followed this agencyʼs work for many years. She is eager to gain experience in Indian and family law through this summer internship. “My family and I continue to be proud and grateful that I was chosen as a recipient of the California Bar Foundation Diversity Scholarship,” Jordyn said. “Receiving this award is allowing me to pursue opportunities in pro bono work and internship programs that I am passionate about, but without this help couldnʼt hope to pursue.”

Grants for a Diverse and Inclusive California Bar The California Bar Foundation is committed to building a better justice system with a State Bar representive of the communities it serves and broadening public interest career opportunities for diverse law students and attorneys. We are the only statewide legal foundation with ties in both the philanthropic and legal communities. Our giving is smart, coordinated and designed for the greatest impact. Our Impact Our grants support the most transformative work for underserved communities by supporting legal service agencies across California. Our grants also help build career opportunities for law students who seek careers in public interest. In 2014, our Grants Program:

• Invested $170,000 in 13 agencies representing underserved communities throughout California;

• Provided a grant of $15,500 to Root & Rebound, a nonprofit launched by one of our former diversity scholars.

In 2015, we invite you to grow this work by investing with us:

• Funding legal fellowship opportunities with legal aid agencies; • Providing larger grants to legal aid agencies; • Developing the California Bar Foundation Diversity in the Law Policy Center

analyzing diversity in the legal profession and furthering guides for grantmakers.

Your Investment We invite organizations sharing our commitment to a diverse and inclusive legal profession to underwrite our Grants Program. Your financial commitment of $2,500 or more provides you:

• Tickets to our annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony • Prominent placement and recognition in media and marketing materials • Deeper connection within the philanthropy community • Recognition as a member of the Foundationʼs Leadership Circle in our

Annual Report and on our website

The California Bar Foundation's support of Disability Rights Legal Center allowed for the creation and distribution of two separate legal resource guides for people living with HIV/AIDS—one focusing upon San Bernardino County and the other on Riverside County. We are thrilled to have been given the chance to expand access to services for this historically underserved population.

The Need Working in public interest is not as lucrative as the private sector, and it can be challenging for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue and maintain public interest careers. As with the private bar, achieving diversity in public interest law is crucial. Clients who come from underserved communities need advocates who reflect their background and experiences. The California Bar Foundationʼs Diversity in the Public Interest - Bar Exam Scholarship is the only California scholarship providing bar exam-related support for diverse law school graduates pursuing public interest careers. Our Impact For the past 20 years, our partnership with BarBri and the accompanying living stipend have made studying for the California Bar Exam less stressful for future lawyers. Legal aid agencies have expressed deep enthusiasm for this scholarship, since they cannot offer bar stipends as many private organizations can. This scholarship supports both law school graduates and the public interest sector as a whole. We are uniquely connected and positioned to reach the most committed, hard-working law students from diverse backgrounds at all 35 California law schools. Your funds support the students with the greatest need, and your partnership ensure that we can reach as many of these students as possible.

Diversity in the Public Interest - Bar Exam Scholarship Fund

Your Invitation A $5,000 tax-deductible gift designated to the Diversity in the Public Interest Bar Exam Scholarship. Pledge must be received by August 1, 2015 (commitment is due by close of fiscal year, December 31, 2015).

Without the generous support of the Public Interest Bar Exam Scholarship, I could not have prepared for and passed the grueling California Bar Exam. The scholarship allowed me

to devote time and energy to studying for the Exam, and alleviated a great deal of stress.

Annual Giving Campaign Fund

We believe that a diverse and inclusive legal profession is critical for all Californians. Every day, we work to increase opportunities for students from communities traditionally underrepresented in the California State Bar to finance their law school studies, pass the California State Bar and fund diversity pipeline programs encouraging them to pursue legal careers. Every year, we at the California Bar Foundation rely on donations from individuals and organizations to fund our critical diversity and inclusion work.

We invite you to make a financial commitment to building a diverse legal profession ensures we can continue offering our Diversity Scholarships for rising first-year law students, the Diversity in the Public Interest - Bar Exam Scholarships for graduating law students committed to practicing in the public interest and fund our grant programs facilitating diversity pipeline programs throughout California. We offer several opportunities to join our work of building a better, more diverse and inclusive California State Bar:

• Personal Giving Your personal gift provides unrestricted funds that underwrite the cost of our Scholarship Programs and fund our pipeline grants. Donations of $250 or more qualify you for recognition as a Fellow and include tickets for our annual Scholarship and Award Ceremony held in September.

• Scholarship and Award Ceremony You or your organization can demonstrate your commitment to

diversity and inclusion in the law by underwriting our Scholarship and Award Ceremony. All funds raised by underwriting the ceremony are used to fund our diversity and inclusion programs.
