he Pine Bluff Confederate Monument, also known as the David 0 , Dodd Monument, is located at the nor th side of t h e Jefferson County Courthouse on Barraque St. at Main St. The sculpture consists of a hatted standing confederate infantry soldier holding his rifle with the butt to the ground, His proper left hand is above his r i g h t on the barrel of the gun. Made by McNeel Marble Co. in Marietta, Georgia, its base is made of stone while the sculpture itself is Georgia marble. The dimensions of the base are 15'xlO1x10'; the sculpture is 5'x2'~2'.

On the north base, the tablet is "TO THE MEMORY OF / OUR CONFEDERATE / SOLDIERS / WE CARE NOT WHENCE THEY CAME, / DEAR IN THEIR LIFEZESS CLAY. / WHETHISR KNOWN OR UNKNOWN TO FAME / THEIR CAUSE AND COLWI'RY /' STILL THE SAME: / THEY DIED AND WORE THE GRaY.ll Beneath this, also on the noxth 'base, is "THIS T24BLET IS INSCRIBED TO / 3. ED MURRAY, COLONEL / OF TEE FIFTH ARKANSAS REGIMENT. / KILLED AT THE BATTLE OF ATLANTA / JULY 2 2 , 1864 / AGE 21 YEARS."

' David Owen Dodd was a 17-year-old Arkansan who, on December 29, f 863, was arrested by Union troops 10 miles w e s t of L i t t l e R o c k . In h i s possession was book containing coded material detailing the strength of Federal forces in ,le area. Following a six-day t r i a l , Dodd was found guilty and sentenced t o leath by hanging. Professor W.C. The unveiling ceremony, which the P ine Bluff ~ a i l v Grashic called "one of the most interesting events in t h e history of Pine B1uf f , was a gala affair . The crowd watched E ssion of Confederate flag bearers, young girls representing eac state, Loiral dignitaries, and the Cotton B e l t band paraded down La k t to Pine Bluff High School.
