October 2008 - Edition 1

WELCOME TO THE 2008/09 CRICKET SEASONThe Cobram Yarroweyah United Cricket Club welcomes all it’s supporters, parents and players to the 2008/2009 cricket season. We wish all players, coaches and officials all the best for the upcoming season.

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2008.

The newsletter will inform, hopefully entertain

and be an integral part of your 2008/09

Cricket season. Congratulations to all the

coachers and players and a special welcome

to all the new people at our club.

Our newest, high profile recruit is Stuart

Burrows who returns to the club from his

home in England. Stuart, accompanied by his

partner Laura, is an accomplished batsman

and bowler who will be not only a welcome

addition to our on field stocks, but as club

coach is available to all to help you improve

any aspect of your game.

As well as Stu and Laura traveling from

abroad to join us, Sam Charles has also

headed across from England and welcome

him to the club as well. Whilst not traveling

as far (Dookie is a little closer than London),

it’s great to also have Charles ‘Eddo’

Edmonson at the club.

A number of players have moved on

from last season and we wish them all the

very best to those who are still involved in

cricket.

Also during the pre season the club

made the decision to only field 2 senior sides

this season. As a result with a few extra

players to fit into 2 sides this year it is

important that everyone gets to training and

makes the most of the your opportunities

when selected to play.

On the off field side of things we have a

full calendar of events that we would love to

see you all at, to take the chance to sit back,

relax and enjoy each others company.

Don’t forget each Thursday night we

have a BBQ following training so hang

around, grab a drink and something to eat

and look out for an opportunity to spin the

wheel!!

Here’s to great year....GO CYUCC.!!!

Thanks to Vince for all his work for keeping our

site up to date this season and also a special

thanks to Andrew Rushby for continuing to add

in all the teams and scores each week.

A future ‘Macka’ judging by this textbook

shot!

Could you be an umpire??If you go for a run, someone has a ping at the stumps to run you out and the ball goes for 4, Do you -

1. get 5 runs and go back to where you played the shot?

2. get 1 and 4 is added to the extras and you go back to the strikers end?

3. Get 5 runs and you stay at the bowlers end?

4. get 4 runs because they had a shot before you get to the end of the 1st run?

.......THE STORY SO FAR.........WEEK 1Division 1 played their first game of the

2008/2009 Division 1 season at the weekend

and were up against the reigning premier in

Waaia. Batting first Waaia made a shaky start,

falling to 4/59 before a great partnership

between Meyland and Walker steadied the

ship and set the combine a total of 164 to

chase.

Stuart Burrows was the main strike

bowler for CYUCC taking three wickets, but

youngsters, Nick Guerts and Sam Fitzpatrick

bowled well and put good pressure on with

the ball.

With the bat CYUCC struggled to make

much headway. Burrows chimed in with 19

and at the fall of his wicket the score line

looked to be doomed and at 7/73 it didn't look

like it would get better. However ,Glenn

McMahon and Greg Sefton came together and

made a great fist of the match to take the

score to 120 before McMahon fell, followed

soon after by Sefton. It was up to Fitzpatrick

and Guerts and both boys played out the

innings solidly before Guerts was out in the

second last over with the score at 135.

WEEK 2Division 1 faced off against Cobram at

the Showgrounds on a warm day last

Saturday. Bowling first CYU kept tight early

but allowed Cobram to post a competitive

4/153. Burrows was the lone batsman to put

up a fight, scoring 61 of the teams total of

100.

Division 2 bowled first in their match

against Finley and were led superbly by Corey

Fitzpatrick who took four wickets in Finley's

total of 148.

In CYU's chase it was Mark Martin (26)

and Colin McKay (31) who provided resistance

amid a collapse as the side fell in the 33rd

over for 95.

The Junior Division took on Berrigan

and lost by one run in a nail biter. Reaching

7/91 after the completion of their 25 overs,

Josh Goldsworthy scoring 35 retired not out,

CYU saw Berrigan pass them, nine down, in

the 23rd over before taking the final wicket.

Ukich and Brasser were the standout

bowlers for CYU, taking three wickets each.

WEEK 3Division 1 had a mixed match at the

weekend against Tocumwal. Making 179 in

their 40 overs the combine was passed on 37

overs as Tocumwal made a total of 208. With

the bat Stuart Burrows, Geoff Benson and

Luke Bauer all got starts with 44, 35 and 25

respectively while with the ball James Daniel

took 4/42. The next match will be against

Barooga this weekend.

Division 2 had a bad day at the office

against Nathalia. After being bowled out

cheaply Nathalia got the runs with ten overs to

spare. Corey Fitzpatrick took two wickets for

CYUCC.

In Junior Division CYUCC made 5/115

from their allotted overs Andrew and Guerts

were the best with the bat making 32 no and

25 respectively.

WEEK 4Division 1 fell to Barooga at the weekend

despite a great century by Stuart Burrows.

Making 7/184 from the allotted 40 overs

CYUCC could not keep Barroga at bay with

the ball. Ben Davis and Burrows took two

wickets each. Barooga finished on 6/191 after

40 overs.

Division 2 also fell to Barooga, making

69 the combine saw Barooga post 3/75 for the

win. Drendal and Sefton were the only

batsmen to provide any resistance with

Barooga needing 29 overs to achieve their

target.

The Juniors made a good fist of their

match against Cobram. The youngsters went

down by 30 runs as Cobram reached 7/145

from their 40 overs, a good effort from the

boys as wickets were shared around.

Quotable Quotes......

Some of the more quotable things heard so

far:

Lloyd to juniors: “Play Straight”, anyone to

Lloyd: “Move your feet!”

“But I’m the most consistent bowler at the

club” ...see profile on back page!

“ Gee I think Barry has been overpriced in the

fantasy cricket, is really he worth a $10 price

tag?” - they prefer to remain anonymous!!

“These are kids gloves....no they’re

not....hang on yes they are......are they??” -

Vince after putting on his just bought (but not

tried on) new batting gloves before the 1st

game.

“Your best will never be good enough. You

can always do better!” - Words of wisdom

from the Fossil.

“ Just have a look at the first one and play

yourself in.” - Stu talking to Macka just

before his first ball 6 against Toc in B Grade.

(If you hear anything of note that should be

included here, let the author know)
