JIM HORNELL
• Hornell served hockey in many capacities in his native Newfoundland and Labrador and carried on his commitment to the sport when he moved to Ontario.
• Jim uses up most of his annual leave from the Brant Community Healthcare System travelling for Hockey Canada.

• As a volunteer, Jim has served at local, provincial, national and international levels within the sport of hockey.
• Presently Chairman of the Board of Hockey Canada, he has toured internationally with several of Canada’s national teams.
• Jim also volunteers at the local, provincial and national level with a variety of health related organizations and the Canadian College of Health Leaders.
JOHNNY POWLESS - FRANK TOMLIN AWARD WINNER
• Johnny Powless (born March 15, 1993 in Six Nations, Ontario) is a professional lacrosse player.
• Powless currently plays for the Vancouver Stealth of the National Lacrosse League, Six Nations Arrows Jr. A and Six Nations Chiefs of the MSL.
• Was a runner up for the 2014 Lou Marsh award for Canadian Athlete of the Year.
JOHNNY POWLESS – FRANK TOMLIN AWARD WINNER
• Powless was drafted 5th overall by the Knighthawks in the 2011 entry draft.
• In 2014 Johnny won his 3rd straight NLL Champions Cup, CLA National Championships at Jr. A (Minto Cup) and Senior (Mann Cup).
• Individual awards include; 2012 NLL Sportsmanship Award, 2012 NLL All-Rookie, 2014 Minto Cup MVP, 2009 CLA Midget National MVP.

Frank Bricker Memorial Award for Male Youth Leadership
During his time, Frank Bricker was a legend in the sport of
boxing. Known by many in the ranks of Ontario Boxing as ‘Mr. Boxing’, Frank is best known in Brantford for his events in the development of the Summerhayes boys, the three boxing brothers who competed in national and international level competition. All 3 turned pro in 1970, and became the only set of three brothers to compete on the same card at Madison Square Garden, an accomplishment that can be attributed to Bricker’s work. Through his efforts, he put Brantford on the world boxing map for his ability to teach and train high caliber boxers.

Phyllis Gretzky Memorial Award for Male Youth Leadership
Phyllis is likely the least famous member of Canada’s first
family of hockey, but many will tell you that she was the most important one. It was her dedication to her family that allowed Wayne to have the kind of success that he did. She was the family stalwart who kept everything cool and collected throughout Wayne’s rise to stardom, doing whatever was necessary behind the scenes to make sure that everything was as normal as it could have been. Her quiet leadership was the glue that kept the foundation together.

George Churchill Memorial Sports Volunteer of the Year
Had the category existed during his day, George Churchill would have found himself nominated for this award for decades. His tireless work with the
track and field program here in Brantford, both with the Brantford club and also with the schools, allowed
Brantford to become a hub for some of the best competitions in the sport. He was the man behind the organization and execution of just about every meet during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and even in to the
90’s. He was also the coach of Brantford’s first track and field to make the Olympic Games, with Debbie
Miller in 1968.

John Macklin Memorial Award Coach of the Year Nominees
Macklin began coaching and officiating track and field in Branford in 1966, and continued through until 1994. During his time, he helped to coach many athletes from Brantford who would go on to national and international competition, including the likes of Liz Polyak, Kevin Sullivan and Rick Mannen. Along the way, he became a respected official on the international stage, officiating at almost every Canadian and international meet during the 1970’s and 1980’s. On top of coaching and officiating, he also was the organizer of the Brant County Track and Filed and Cross Country championships for many years, and was heavily involved with the organization of the CWOSSA and OFSAA championships in both of these sports as well.

To be eligible for this award, the person must be a VOLUNTEER within a Brantford minor sports association, or with an elementary school or high school in the city of Brantford. The individual must volunteer in a role other than coach e.g. Training staff, board members, etc… This person must have been with the association/team for a minimum of 15 years, and their presence as a member of the organization has a positive impact on those with whom they interact in their role.

• He has been devoted to the young athletes of our community by promoting athletics and positive values

• For over 18 years has volunteered for the Brantford Minor Softball Association in a variety of areas
• Willingly gives up her summer vacation to oversee the many facets of a baseball season
• She is a very organized, passionate, hard working volunteer with great attention to detail, while always keeping a smile on her face.
Jimmy Wilkes Memorial Award Team of the Year Nominees
When you talk about the sport of baseball in Brantford, the
conversation will usually involve the Brantford Red Sox of the Inter-County Baseball League, and will inevitably include the name Jimmy Wilkes. Wilkes has been a legend of baseball in this community ever since arriving to play with the Brantford Red Sox in 1953. He was involved with the league as a player,
then as an umpire, for over 30 years. His quiet leadership helped the Red Sox to several championships, as well as with
the development of many players throughout the Inter-County league as well as Brantford Minor Baseball.

BCI SENIOR GIRLS’ RUGBY BRANTFORD TRACK AND FIELD – CROSS

BANTAM AA GIRLS’ HOCKEY • Won bronze at the Provincial
Finals • Fantastic accomplishment to
compete at the AA level and be successful – won the Alliance Bantam AA Championship
BCI SENIOR GIRLS’ RUGBY
• Won the ‘AAAA’ OFSAA Rugby title in 2014
• The girls are extremely dedicated, focus on team unity and always play with integrity – never using unsportsmanlike tactics to advance the game
• They represent BCI with the greatest honour and are mentors to the Junior Girls’ rugby team
BRANTFORD TRACK AND FIELD CROSS COUNTRY
• Boys’ youth team competed at the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver in November
• Placed 4th out of 19 teams • The muddy and snowy
conditions challenged the boys both mentally and physically but their results exceeded their expectations

• Has refereed soccer for 41 years starting in the men’s league and then moving on to referee children
• He has refereed at many levels such as university, high school, open women’s division and rep/competitive level across Ontario
• He has helped mentor hundreds of youth throughout his career and still referees
SUZANNE PAULINS - PROFILE • Has been an official for close to
15 years and now is a Swimming Canada Master Official – Level 5
• Volunteers at many meets from local high school events to National and International level meets
• The BAC has an extraordinary tradition for developing and maintaining high level officials and Suzanne is an excellent mentor and example
SCOTT WRIGHT - PROFILE
• Has refereed hockey for 20 years
• Has worked closely with the Brantford Minor Hockey Association listening to their concerns and working to improve the game
• Is a well respected, dedicated official with players and coaches in the BMHA

The Frank Tomlin Memorial Award Sports Person of the Year
This award is named in honour of the late Frank Tomlin
who passed away in 1976. Tomlin is remembered as a great sports fan that was passionate about his city and those who represented it. Gord Showler, who at the time of Frank's death was a sponsor of Brantford's Junior 'B' franchise, initiated the award.
Each year the award recognizes an individual from Brantford whose contribution to sport has had a great impact on this community. The winner of the award must be active in the sport for which they are nominated, however work done in previous years is also taken into consideration. No individual can win the award in consecutive years but the award can be won by the same individual more than once.
