Our Parish Patroness: In Catholic teaching, the Faithful may render veneration to the Saints and humbly request their intercessory prayers. The Saints are those members of the Church Triumphant in the glory of heaven. They are close to the Lord. Their lives are remembered for holiness and virtue. Each

year during the preparation for Confirmation and in the R.C.I.A., our candidates reflect on the lives of the saints as they discern a patron saint for the sacrament of Confirmation. Our candidates will actually be called their saint’s name at the time of anointing with the Sacred Chrism. We should all be mindful of the lives of the saints and we should strive to follow their example. Most parishes are placed under the patronage of a saint or under a title of our Lord such as Good Shepherd or Sacred Heart. Our parish was placed under the patronage of St. The re se of Lisieux. In the liturgical year, her feast day is October 1. I find it helpful to recall her holy life and of our call to follow the lives of the saints. At a young age, St. The re se felt the call to religious life. After several attempts, she was finally accepted into the Carmelite Order at the age of 15. It is all part of providence that a humble nun who died at the age of twenty-four would write a journal, The Story of a Soul that would be read throughout the world, be named the co-patroness of France with St. Joan of Arc, and a co-patroness of foreign missions with St. Francis Xavier. St. John Paul II named her a Doctor of the Church in 1997 meaning that her teachings are sound and worthy of our study and reflection. For five years, I served as the diocesan director of the Pontifical Mission Societies. Five years ago, I participated in a Mission Dinner in Manhattan on the feast of St. Therese that raised more than $200,000 for the missions. The national director was able to coordinate a tour that included the writing desk of the good saint and it was present at the dinner, a true relic. That small wooden lap desk was one of the few possessions that the sisters were permitted to have. That small box became an instrument that opened a window to her heart and her teachings to the world. Through her writings,

she revealed her joys, her sufferings and how she had a desire to serve as a missionary to bring souls closer to Christ. Without ever leaving her monastery in Lisieux, she reached the ends of the earth through her prayers, correspondence and support for missions throughout the Church. She saw her vocation as ‘to love’ and desired “to save souls and pray for priests.” Prior to her death at such a young age, she wrote, “I want to spend my heaven doing good on earth.” The Story of a Soul is a Catholic classic and may found on-line electronically for free or as a book to buy. There is a copy here in the Carolina Catholic Corner beside the St. Ignatius Day Chapel. St. Thérèse, please pray for us. Yours in peace, Fr. Mark

Spiritual Adoption is

coming to St. Therese!

Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Therese announces an adoption program for young and old alike. The members of the St. Therese parish family will soon have the opportunity to “spiritually adopt” a child who is newly conceived this month. Not all babies make it to birth. Many parents tragically experience the loss of a child to miscarriage or premature birth. And more than 3,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. These are the babies you are being asked to “adopt” simply by praying for him or her each day. You may “adopt” a child individually or as a family by signing up during the weekend of September 30th/October 1st. Prayer pledges will be available after Masses along with age-appropriate prayer cards. It is suggested that you name the child for whom you

will be praying, which will remind you that, although you may never meet the child in this life, you truly are praying for a specific child who needs your prayers. Watch the bulletin as well as the Little One posters in the Narthex for monthly reports describing “your baby’s” development. In July, we will celebrate the “births’” of our spiritually adopted babies by collecting baby items which will be given to mothers in need of assistance. There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won’t you please “spiritually adopt” one and share the love for life that God has given you?

Community Outreach Meeting A Community Outreach Meeting will be held, Wednesday, October 4th at 1:00pm in room 15. Some of the projects discussed will be the Coat & Food Drive, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, and the Giving Tree.

All are welcome!

Faith Formation Redefined All parishes have three goals set before them with

regards to adult faith formation. The first goal is to

invite and enable ongoing conversion to Jesus. Our

parish offers many opportunities for us to grow

closer to our Lord and Savior. The most obvious is

our RCIA process. The many people joining our

church as well as those seeking a refresher take

part in discussions in the weeks leading up to

Easter. We also offer many different spiritual

development opportunities with our talks on

Ignatian Spirituality, our reconciliation services and

our annual Parish Mission among many others. The

second and third goals are to promote active

participation in the community and to call adults to

act as disciples in the world. Very few parishes

have the number of organizations and individuals,

as we do, driven to serve each other and everyone

else in the world. Keep an eye on the bulletin for

your own faith formation opportunities.
